DEAR STAFFORD NEIGHBORS,
As the leaves turn and a crispness fills the air, we embrace all the wonderful things that fall brings to our community. From pumpkin patches and fall festivals to cozy bowls of soup and football games, this season is all about savoring the little moments and rejoicing that the Virginia humidity has FINALLY dissipated!
This month, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Nathan and Jennifer Cumming, a family deeply rooted in Stafford’s sense of community. Nathan serves in the U.S. Army, while Jennifer runs a thriving mobile bartending business called Kombi Keg RVA. Their love for the natural beauty of our area and their commitment to family shines through everything they do.
October also marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we are proud to highlight Bradford Jenner and his team at Affordable Automotive, who are supporting Brakes for Breasts by offering free brake pads and donating proceeds to fund breast cancer vaccine research. It’s a cause close to many hearts, including the Mountain View students. Check out Tayler Tanks’ story on MVHS’s Dig Pink and Pink Out volleyball and football games that unite our community and show support for breast cancer survivors, those currently fighting their battles, and their loved ones and families.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Renovations

Compiled by Mallory Hardgrove
If you’re considering a kitchen or bathroom remodel, you may have questions about what sets Kitchens For You apart, how the process works, and what to expect regarding costs. Below are answers from owner Chris Romero to some of the most frequently asked questions about working with Kitchens For You to help you feel confident and prepared for your renovation journey.
Q: What sets Kitchens For You apart from other remodeling companies?
A: At Kitchens For You, our process is designed to keep the homeowner fully informed and involved from start to finish. It begins with a home visit, during which I personally take detailed measurements and discuss your vision for the space. This allows us to understand your needs and preferences right from the start.
Once the initial measurements are complete, we invite clients to our showroom for a comprehensive presentation. During this presentation, we showcase the options for cabinets, countertops, tiles, and hardware that match the design we’ve discussed. At this stage, clients can see the materials firsthand, and we provide detailed visuals of the project so you have a clear idea of what the final result will look like.
We take pride in maintaining open communication throughout the entire process. From the first meeting to the final touches, I stay in contact with clients via group text, providing daily updates on the renovation’s progress, including arrivals and adjustments. Our office staff also communicates regularly by email to handle payments and any necessary changes to the project scope.
Q: How can clients pay for their kitchen or bathroom remodel?
A: We offer flexible payment options, including financing plans. We understand that remodeling can be a significant investment, so our goal is to help you find a solution that fits your budget while still providing high-quality craftsmanship. During the consultation phase, you can discuss financing options with us to find a plan that works for you.
Q: How much do kitchen and bathroom renovations typically cost?
A: The cost of renovations can vary greatly depending on the size of the project and the specific materials used. On average, kitchen remodels range between $40,000 and $60,000, while bathroom renovations typically cost between $35,000 and $45,000. These figures can fluctuate depending on the complexity of the design, the materials selected, and any custom features you may want to include. We’re happy to discuss your budget and options during the design phase to ensure you get the best value for your investment.
Q: What’s the remodeling process like?
A: We believe in keeping our clients fully informed and involved throughout the remodeling process. After the design phase, we provide a detailed construction schedule so you know what to expect daily. Renovations can sometimes require adjustments, and we ensure any necessary changes are communicated promptly. Clients are updated on daily arrivals and progress through group texts, and we’re always available to answer questions or address concerns as they arise. Our office staff also stays in touch regarding payments and any adjustments to the invoice.

Q: Do you offer free estimates? What’s the process?
A: Yes, we offer free estimates to all prospective clients. To get started, we’ll schedule a time to visit your home, take measurements, and discuss your ideas. Following that, we’ll provide an estimate based on the scope of work and materials required. This process allows us to give you a clear understanding of costs upfront so there are no surprises later.
Q: Are you licensed?
A: Absolutely. Kitchens For You is fully licensed, bonded, and insured. This ensures that our clients receive professional, reliable service, and it protects customers throughout the renovation process. You can rest easy knowing that your project is in capable hands.

The Cumming Family:
FINDING PEACE AND PURPOSE IN STAFFORD
the core of their family. He continues to serve as an Aviation Major, reflecting both his commitment to his country and his family’s strong sense of duty.
Education, Entrepreneurship, & Exploring Passions
Both Nathan and Jennifer have strong educational backgrounds. Jenn holds bachelor’s degrees in Religion from Liberty University and Chemistry from Troy University, while Nathan earned his bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies from Arkansas State.
Jenn’s career path has been eclectic, reflecting her wide-ranging interests. “I’ve done a little bit of everything—ballet instructor, artist, laboratory assistant, bartender, and now, I’m a small business owner,” Jenn said. In 2022, she re-energized the Kombi Keg RVA franchise, a mobile bartending service featuring a 1962 VW Microbus converted into a six-tap kegerator.
“It’s been a fun journey turning that VW bus into something people can enjoy at weddings and corporate events,” she said. Her business expanded in 2023 to include On The Fly Tapsters, offering full catering and bartending services focusing on sustainability and craft cocktails.
Nathan and Jennifer Cumming have built a fulfilling life in Stafford, Virginia, filled with family, service, and entrepreneurship. The Cumming family, which includes their three children—Natalia (19), Gabriel (16), and Ephraim (12)—moved to Stafford in 2021, seeking a balance between urban convenience and rural tranquility.
A Love Story Rooted in Service
Nathan and Jennifer’s love story began in San Diego, California, two decades ago. In 2003, Nathan had just returned from U.S. Army Basic Combat Training and worked as a security guard and reservist, while Jenn worked at David’s Bridal. Their romance led to a spontaneous wedding after a unit Christmas party revealed Nathan’s upcoming deployment to Iraq.
“Nathan’s Reserve unit told the soldiers and families they were preparing for deployment, and on the way home from that party, we decided to get married,” Jenn recalled. “We had a beautiful ceremony with family and friends the next weekend, and the rest is history.”
Nathan’s Army career has taken the family to various locations. With more than 20 years of dedicated service, including two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Nathan has risen from the rank of Private to Major, exemplifying the values that are at

“Running a business and a family simultaneously can be a challenge,” Jenn admitted, “but I love the creativity, especially when I’m coming up with new cocktail recipes.” In her spare time, Jenn enjoys watercolor painting, gardening, and caring for her menagerie of animals on their “farm.” She’s also always working on developing new cocktail recipes and refining her “already delicious cooking,” which garners props from Nathan and her children.
Each of the Cumming children has unique passions and pursuits. The eldest, Natalia, works as a barista and dreams of attending Cambridge University to earn a PhD in psychology. “She’s always had a fascination with the human mind,” Jennifer said proudly. “Her digital art is amazing, too—it’s something she enjoys in her spare time.”
Gabriel, 16, is a competitive chess player with aspirations to become a chess master. “He’s thinking about attending law school, focusing on intellectual property law,” Jenn shared. “He’s also planning to start a nonprofit to teach chess to underserved youth.”
Ephraim, the youngest at 12, has a talent for computer programming and design. “He loves coding and spends a lot of time on different platforms learning new skills,” Nathan said. “It’s fascinating to watch him dive so deeply into something at such a young age.”

Life in Stafford
The Cumming family moved to Stafford in 2021 after Jenn’s mother passed away, seeking a peaceful, natural setting.
“We were looking for a place away from the hustle and bustle,” Jenn explained. “Stafford was perfect—rural enough for peace and quiet but close enough to larger cities for convenience.”
One of their favorite aspects of Stafford is the balance between nature and history. “We love how close we are to the historical aspects of Fredericksburg and Stafford,” Nathan said. “But we’re also homebodies who enjoy spending time on our property.”
Their home is full of animals, adding to the peaceful atmosphere they sought. Athena, a German Shepherd, lives alongside two cats—Davina and Aurora—several fish, a Mississippi Map Turtle, four land turtles, and 38 chickens.
“It’s like our own little farm,” Jenn laughed. “I love caring for the chickens and turtles, and the kids are always excited when we get new additions.”
Jenn also shared tips on raising chickens with her neighbors. “It’s fun and brings us closer together,” she added. The Cumming family is closely involved in their neighborhood, which includes many other military families.
“Most families on our street are either former or current military, so there’s a sense of understanding and camaraderie,” Nathan explained. Although the neighborhood is generally quiet, Jenn and Nathan enjoy small gatherings with

neighbors when time allows. “We may not have big events, but there’s a sense of community I really appreciate,” Jenn said.
When they venture out, the family enjoys axe throwing, fine dining at Fahrenheit 132, or grabbing drinks at Cheekys in Fredericksburg. “We’re homebodies, but when we go out, we like to do something different,” Nathan said. “Axe throwing has been a fun way to bond as a family.”
Though Stafford is their ideal home base, the Cumming family loves traveling, particularly to nature-inspired destinations. “Almost anywhere that’s historic or nature-focused is perfect,” Nathan said. They frequently visit Hotel Roanoke and make trips to Arkansas to visit family, or they indulge in the local history of Fredericksburg and Stafford.
“We enjoy the balance of the urban-rural space [in Stafford] with the availability to enjoy the metropolis and immense opportunities of universities and museums,” Jenn said.
As the Cumming family continues to grow in Stafford, they are grateful for the opportunities and peace the area offers. “It’s a beautiful place to raise a family,” Jenn said.
Nathan and Jennifer’s journey, from their spontaneous wedding to raising three talented children and running a business, reflects their resilience, creativity, and commitment to service. In Stafford, they’ve found a community that supports their ambitions and provides the tranquility they sought years ago.

STEP UP YOUR STAIRCASE
By Karie Owens, Photos Courtesy of NK Floors
Steps are a necessity as well as an architectural art. Staircases come in all shapes and sizes, including spiral, straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, winder, curved, split, ladder, and cantilever. They may be a passageway from floor to floor or a cascading embellishment ascending in the center of a room. How can a homeowner take their existing staircase to the next level?
Go from hard surface to carpet. This can done in a few ways. First, add a runner to the existing hardwood steps. Decorative runners add a softer step and are a great way to retain the warm look of a wood staircase while adding cushion, color, and design. You could also completely cover the steps with a new pad and carpet. Homeowners with young children and elderly family members go this route because of safety. The carpet can be installed in a cap-and-band (Hollywood) or waterfall style.
Sand and refinish hardwood. When dealing with a flight that needs refinishing, many factors come into play: color matching, dust, inconvenience, and downtime. Refinishing can be a cost-effective way to upgrade. Matching existing wood takes skill. One must consider factors such as wood age, sun bleaching, wood species, and geographical regions. This is where experience matters.
Choose a hard surface stair transformation. Installations expert and Operations Manager at NK Floors, Joe Lewis, skillfully explains the process. “We remove the old carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip. Next, we remove any squeaks and address other concerns about the structural integrity of the stairs. The treads and risers are then carefully cut, beginning from the bottom up, riser then tread. Once that process is complete, the treads and risers are attached with glue and nails and are caulked. Finally, the skirt boards are painted. LVP treads are usually “walk ready” in a few hours, and hardwood treads in four to six hours. I recommend using painted risers for LVP and oak treads for a brighter set of stairs.”

BEFORE AFTER

Replace spindles and railing systems. When altering open stairs, the railing system may need to be removed. This is an excellent time to upgrade your balusters or spindles. Replacing wood spindles with low-profile iron rods adds a trendy look. You may also switch from a vertical to a horizontal orientation.
When upgrading steps, the possibilities are endless. Choose your design, select experienced installers, and use superior products. Your results will be a look that lasts and elevates your space.
WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK NK FLOORS FOR BRINGING YOU THIS MONTH'S HOME IMPROVEMENT CORNER

Wag More, Hurt Less:
A Guide to Pain-Free Living for Your Pet
By Dr. Katrina Spies, DVM, CHPV, CCRV, CVA

Last month, we explored the subtle signs that might reveal your furry friend is in pain. Now that you’ve recognized these signs, you might be asking, “What can I do to help?” The good news is that chronic pain in pets can be effectively managed, allowing them to lead a happier, more comfortable life. Here’s a closer look at the variety of options available to help your pet feel their best.
The
Power of Modern Medications
When it comes to managing chronic pain, medication is often the first line of defense. Veterinarian-prescribed NSAIDs, such as carprofen and meloxicam, are tailored for dogs and cats to reduce inflammation and ease pain. If your pet doesn’t tolerate traditional NSAIDs well, newer options like grapiprant can offer relief with fewer side effects. To boost the effectiveness of these medications, pain-modulating drugs like gabapentin are often added to the mix. But medication doesn’t stop there—joint supplements, omega-3 fatty acids, and injectable treatments like Adequan can work wonders in protecting cartilage and maintaining joint health. Monoclonal antibody injections (Librela and Solensia), as well as regenerative joint injections using stem cells and platelets can provide targeted, long-lasting relief.

Tailoring the Perfect Plan for Your Pet

No two pets are the same, and their pain management shouldn’t be either. The key is finding the right blend of treatments that suit your pet’s specific needs. By working closely with your veterinarian, you can create a customized plan that combines medications, physical therapy, and integrative therapies. This individualized approach will help your beloved companion live a happier, more comfortable life, free from the burden of chronic pain.

Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy: Moving Towards Comfort
Just as in humans, physical therapy is a game-changer for pets living with chronic pain. Imagine your pet receiving a soothing massage or a gentle joint mobilization session—these manual therapies can significantly reduce discomfort and improve flexibility. Stretching and passive range of motion (PROM) exercises help keep their joints limber and healthy.

Therapeutic exercises are another crucial component designed to strengthen muscles, improve balance, and enhance overall mobility. And because your pet’s care doesn’t end when they leave the clinic, a personalized home exercise plan (HEP) ensures they continue to make progress. When paired with a customized diet and weight management plan, rehabilitation therapy can reduce the strain on joints and help your pet stay active and pain-free.
Embracing Integrative and Holistic Therapies

For those open-minded to a holistic approach, there’s no shortage of effective options. Acupuncture, for example, is a time-tested method that can alleviate pain and promote healing in pets. Chinese herbal medications can be used alongside traditional treatments, providing an extra layer of relief. In addition, non-invasive therapies like therapeutic laser, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), shockwave, and electrical stimulation (TENS, NMES) offer innovative ways to manage pain by enhancing circulation, reducing inflammation, and stimulating natural healing.

THE POWER OF PINK:
How “Pink Out” and “Dig Pink” Unite Stafford for a Greater Cause
By Tayler Tanks, Photos Courtesy of Laura Stoffell, Light and Lens Photos

In the town of Stafford, the annual “Pink Out” and “Dig Pink” games are more than just sports events— they’re cherished traditions that unite the community in the fight against cancer. These spirited occasions, held at local football and volleyball games, are not unique to Stafford; communities around the world host similar events. However, here in Stafford, these games carry a special weight, serving as a beacon of hope and solidarity for cancer survivors, their families, and those still fighting the battle.
At any typical football or volleyball game, you’ll see a sea of home team colors. But during the fall “Pink Out” and “Dig Pink” events, the stadium and court are awash in every imaginable shade of pink. Cheerleaders wear pink bows, football players don pink ribbons, and volleyball players don pink socks and wristbands. It’s a powerful visual display that reminds everyone of the deeper cause at hand.
Jayda Moffat, Senior Captain of the Mountain View High School volleyball team, shared why “Dig Pink” holds such significance for her and her teammates.
“Dig Pink is important to our volleyball team and the community because it’s a way to support and contribute to breast cancer awareness through fundraising. While it’s fun to wear pink accessories, the real purpose is to raise awareness for this disease and engage the community. It’s a demonstration of how sports can play a major role in social advocacy and charitable efforts,” Jayda explained.
Jayda’s words highlight that “Pink Out” and “Dig Pink” are not just about fashion or fun—they’re about making a meaningful impact. The events foster a spirit of solidarity, reminding the community that together, they can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
For some, these games are deeply personal. A senior football player reflected on how this year’s “Pink Out” is especially significant for him.
“This past summer, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it was a very tough time for my family. Trying to be there for her in any way I could, not knowing what would happen, was hard. This year, my appreciation for ‘Pink Out’ is different. Now, I feel thankful that these events exist—not just to support survivors, but also the families who are going through it.”
His family’s experience serves as a reminder that behind the sea of pink, there are real people and real struggles. For survivors, those currently fighting, and their families, these events are more than just a show of support—they’re a lifeline. Seeing a community rally around them, showing that they are not alone, can mean the world.
The “Pink Out” and “Dig Pink” games serve as a powerful display of unity, hope, and compassion. They remind everyone in Stafford that this fight against cancer is fought by many and that no one has to face it alone. Through these events, new friendships are formed, connections are strengthened, and a sense of community is nurtured.
If you or someone you know is battling cancer, there are support groups available in Stafford to help:
• Mary Washington Healthcare Cancer Support Services: www.marywashingtonhealthcare.com/ our-services/cancer-care/patient-support-services/cancer-center-support-groups/
• Stafford Hope Cancer Support Group: www. staffordhope.org/cancer-support-group/ These groups offer a place to connect, share, and find solace in knowing that you don’t have to go through this journey alone.
The fight against cancer is a community effort, and through events like “Pink Out” and “Dig Pink,” Stafford shows that it’s a fight they are willing to take on—together.

BRAKES FOR BREASTS:
HOW AFFORDABLE AUTOMOTIVE AND BRADFORD JENNER ARE DRIVING CHANGE
By Mallory Hardgrove, Logo Courtesy of Brakes for Breasts

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and for Bradford Jenner, owner of Affordable Automotive, it’s an opportunity to merge his passion for cars with a cause that hits close to home. Through the Brakes for Breasts campaign, Jenner and his team are not only offering essential vehicle services but they are also raising crucial funds for an innovative breast cancer vaccine trial.
Founded in 2011, Brakes for Breasts brings together independent auto repair shops across the country to support research for a preventive breast cancer vaccine. Affordable Automotive is one of the many businesses involved in this campaign, and for the entire month of October, they are offering free brake pads to customers who bring their vehicles in for brake service. In return, the shop donates 10% of the brake job to the Brakes for Breasts campaign, contributing to the ongoing research aimed at eradicating breast cancer.
“We have helped generate over $6,000 over the past five years, and my goal this year is to donate another $6,000 or more,” said Jenner. Supporting the breast cancer vaccine trial is something Jenner and Affordable Automotive are proud to do. “Not only do we provide a valuable service to our customers, but we also get to contribute to groundbreaking research that could change the future of breast cancer treatment.”
What makes the Brakes for Breasts initiative so impactful is its dual benefit.
Customers receive free brake pads—a tangible financial relief for vehicle maintenance—while Affordable Automotive makes a donation toward the vaccine trial. The vaccine, currently in clinical trials, is designed to target a protein that fuels the growth of breast cancer cells, with the potential to prevent the disease altogether. Jenner’s involvement in Brakes for Breasts is personal. It’s hard to find anyone that hasn’t been affected by breast cancer.
“It runs in my family,” he shared, “but thankfully, no one close to me has had to deal with it directly. I’ve been supporting this campaign for the past five years because I believe in the cause and the vaccine’s potential for good.” As the Brakes for Breasts nonprofit organization highlights, “Prevention is the cure,” and while

treatment for breast cancer is more advanced and effective than it’s ever been, the group raises the great question: “Why wait until it happens to treat it? Let’s stop it before it happens.”
Jenner also highlighted more of what he loves about the nonprofit. “This group was started by two women, Laura Frank and Leigh Anne Best, who own automotive repair shops, and women are a huge part of my own shop,” Jenner said.
“I really like that all the proceeds go directly to funding research for the vaccine, not to pay a large staff or the founders. While organizations like the Susan G. Komen Foundation have certainly made an impact, very little of their funds actually go toward research.”
Since its inception, Brakes for Breasts has raised over $1.8 million, all of which directly supports the research led by Dr. Vincent Tuohy at the Cleveland Clinic. Jenner and his team at Affordable Automotive are honored to be part of this national effort.
“Knowing that we’re contributing to something as life-changing as a breast cancer vaccine is incredibly rewarding,” Jenner says. “It’s a small step in the right direction, but it’s one we can take together as a community.”
For Jenner, October isn’t just about free brake pads—it’s about making a lasting impact. “Women are a huge part of our business,” he emphasized. “We want to do our part to give back to them and support research that could potentially save lives. It’s not just about cars; it’s about driving progress in the fight against breast cancer.”
With this commitment, Affordable Automotive and Bradford Jenner are not just fixing cars—they’re helping to fix a future where breast cancer may no longer exist.

Karie’s Kitchen
Chicken Minestrone Soup from
By Karie Owens
Warm up with my hearty vegetable classic with a robust chicken
INGREDIENTS
• Small roasting chicken

• A large pot filled with water 2/3 full
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 2 tablespoons of fresh, minced garlic
• 1 cup fresh, chopped parsley
1 finely chopped sweet onion
• 2 cups chopped celery
• 2 cups sliced baby carrots
• 2 tablespoons Orrington Farms broth base chicken powder

• 2 tablespoons Premium Better Than Bouillon Roasted Chicken Base
• 3 cans diced tomatoes (do not strain)
• 2 cups diced zucchini (yellow and green)
• 3 cups baby spinach 1/4 cup parmesan cheese
• 1/4 cup Romano cheese
• 1 can of cooked, strained cannellini beans
• 1 pound baby pasta shells 1/4 stick of butter
Variation: add a cup of diced butternut squash for a fall twist.

I cook this in my kitchen in Old World Italian style with few measuring tools. Use this recipe as a guide and let your tastebuds lead you to the amounts that are “just right.” This will yield a very generous pot of hearty soup, so gather friends or place in mason jars to spread some fall cheer.
DIRECTIONS
1. Thoroughly rinse a roasting chicken, pull out the gizzards and neck, and place in a large pot.
2. Fill the large pot with enough water to boil the roasting chicken (about 2/3 full), boil, and let the chicken cook thoroughly.
3. Set aside to let cool. Keep the broth; this will be your base for the soup. Carefully remove the chicken and cool it; carefully remove the bones that may remain in the pot.
4. Add Orrington Farms broth base chicken powder and Premium Better Than Bouillon Roasted Chicken Base to the pot with chicken and broth. Add enough water to regain the volume lost in the boiling process.
5. In a separate pan, sauté olive oil, minced garlic, chopped parsley, sweet onion, chopped celery, and sliced baby carrots. Then add salt and black pepper. Set this aside.
6. Bring the pot with the chicken base broth to a gentle boil and add the diced tomatoes, zucchini, and spinach (and butternut squash if following the fall recipe). Cook at a gentle boil or simmer until the vegetables are softened.
7. While the vegetables are cooking in the soup pot, boil another small pot of water and cook the pasta shells. Strain, add butter, and sprinkle with salt. Set aside.
8. When the chicken is cool enough to touch, peel and dice it, and set it back in the pot with the broth and vegetables. Strain the cannellini beans and add them. Stir in the grated parmesan and Romano cheeses.
9. Once all the ingredients are mixed together, simmer the soup to marry all the flavors.
10. Finally, add the cooked pasta shells, or leave them on the side and add them to the soup before serving.

What if your child is above grade level?
By Cherice Taylor

Cherice Taylor, M.A. in Education Administration and Center Director at Sylvan Learning, is an experienced educator and community leader involved in the Rotary Club of Stafford and a Charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Psi Psi Omega Chapter. With a strong commitment to service and community improvement, she is a poet, mother of four, and advocates the philosophy of “Service Above Self.”
The pandemic exposed various flaws in the education system and revealed many students struggling academically. However, some students excelled, even outperforming their pre-pandemic performance. What if your child is already above grade level? This can pose a challenge for families.
I remember crying after my first day of kindergarten because I hadn’t learned to read yet, but my mother reassured me I’d get there. As a former first-grade teacher, I believe first grade is crucial. I had an excellent teacher who managed a combined class of first through third graders, and collaborated with the teacher next door for fourth through sixth graders. This setup allowed me to learn at my level in reading and math, and the strong foundation from first through fourth grades helped me skip fifth grade and deliver the sixth-grade graduation speech. Despite many students struggling, some are thriving. I wasn’t identified as gifted, though my sister was, and I believe high-achieving and gifted students also need support. As a parent, how can you ensure your child is challenged and reaches their full potential?
To ensure your child reaches their full potential, consider these steps:
• Assess Academic Standing: Get a reading and math assessment from a reputable provider.
• Review Benchmark Results: Obtain copies of your child’s academic benchmarks from the start, middle, and end of the year.
• Meet with the Teacher: Discuss how the teacher plans to address your child’s needs for advancement.
• Explore Resources: Find out about available resources and staff to help your child stay ahead.
• Understand Growth Expectations: Aim for at least one grade level of growth.
• Differentiate Needs: Learn the difference between giftedness and high achievement.
• Request Assessments: If you suspect your child may be gifted and the school hasn’t assessed them, request testing or consult your pediatrician.
• Communicate with Your Child: Check if they are bored or seeking more challenges.
• Seek Enrichment Opportunities: Look for additional enrichment activities both in and out of school.
High expectations for all students should be standard in education. With over 30 years in the field, I’ve observed that some bright students may downplay their abilities to fit in or avoid outshining peers. Every student has unique gifts, and as I’ve told my sons, “Embrace your greatness.”
High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation.
