And welcome to 2024! I don’t know about you, but I cannot believe it’s already the New Year! We have another great issue in store for you.
This month, we shine a spotlight on another remarkable family: The Perrys of Kings Crest. Rick and Lisa Perry have accomplished some incredible feats in their real estate careers, but their greatest accomplishments in life have been their relationships: with each other, with their children, and with their church community.
Additionally, we have some new businesses that are featured; we’re adding to our list of resident experts and new sponsors so you’ll get to know Apogee Hardwood Cleaning, Bear River Massage, and PetMan Grooming better within the following pages as well. We even have a fun little contest– see details inside– for those of you who have some fourlegged family members.
We also highlight Louie’s HUWE, a local nonprofit organization founded by a mother going to great lengths to bring awareness and research to the genetic mutation, HUWE-1. In addition to this hero mom, we would love to shine a spotlight on multiple others in our community. If you know of a teacher, first responder, service member, police officer, or volunteer who gives back to the community, please let us know.
We would love to give them a shout out for their efforts and the recognition they deserve. Or, if you just have an idea you’d love to contribute or a topic you believe the community would benefit from learning more about, simply send us an email. We would love to hear from you!
As always, we would like to thank our sponsors and you, the readers of Stafford Living, for your patronage. We hope that the New Year is off to a phenomenal start for you and yours!
Happy reading, friends!

With a unique approach to restoring your hardwood floors, Apogee Hardwood Cleaning offers a cost-effective alternative to revitalizing worn and dull-looking wood flooring in the Stafford area. Founded by Steve Bressette in September 2022, the company has shifted its focus to cleaning and refinishing hardwood floors, carving a niche as a high-quality, convenient, and reasonably-priced service provider.
While the Northern Virginia area is teeming with companies who specialize in hardwood flooring installation, replacement, and refinishing, Apogee distinguishes itself from the pack by exclusively offering services tailored to bringing hardwood floors back to their pristine condition, with only two others known to provide similar services.
One of Apogee’s innovative offerings is the “screen & recoat process,” an alternative to sanding or replacing your hardwood floors.
“The screen and recoat is considered a maintenance process for hardwood floors, but for many floors, this is a good restoration alternative, typically half the price of sanding,” Steve explained. Additionally, the “screen and recoat” service is usually done in a single day, making it more desirable and convenient than a sanding or replacement service taking multiple days.
“We all have busy lives and no one wants to move out of their house for two to five days to have their floors sanded or replaced,” added Steve.
“Replacement of the hardwood floors is more costly than sanding unless you switch to one of the false alternatives– vinyl, engineered, or laminate,” he said, making it an attractive option for homeowners seeking a budget-friendly-- yet transformative-- solution.
Additionally, Apogee extends its services to wax removal, addressing a common issue where storebought products, intended to enhance shine, actually and inadvertently leave floors looking dark and dull.
“Many people don’t know that the store-bought products they use on the floors to get them to shine are the culprits of why the floors look dark, dull, and dingy,” Steve explained. “Many products that will make the floor shine contain acrylic wax, urethanes,
or chemicals that leave wax residues on the floors. And, over time, these waxes and residues collect dirt, making the floor dark and dull.” That’s where Apogee’s services come in– they remove this residue with a chemical process.
However, what sets Apogee apart from the competition is its unparalleled services and the sense of pride its founder takes in his work. Founder and owner, Steve Bressette, feels a sense of accomplishment every day in his work. After spending 20 years working as an engineer for the government in windowless offices, Steve found renewed purpose and satisfaction in transforming hardwood floors.
“At the end of the day, week, month, or year, there was really nothing to look back at and say, ‘This is what I accomplished.’ It was a lot of repetitive work, doing the same thing over and over,” explained Steve. “I love working on the hardwood floors with this screen and recoat process. First, there is no windowless office. I work between my van and the customer’s hardwood floor. Second, when I arrive in the morning, the floor is not looking good. By the time I leave in the afternoon, the floor looks great, and the customer is really happy with the results. So, there is a great sense of accomplishment with every job.”
Steve’s message is clear: there’s a more convenient and cost-effective way to revitalize your floors, and Apogee is here to provide it. As a family business, Apogee involves Steve, his wife, Delia, his stepdaughter, Pamela, and his sister-in-law, Nelly. The tight-knit team is dedicated to each other and their customers, providing excellence in every encounter.
Beyond their professional endeavors, the Bressette family members are also avid dog lovers, welcoming two adopted and charming hound mixes, Jack and Juliet, to their family. While Steve’s roots trace back to Maine, Delia, Pamela, and Nelly hail from Peru, adding a cultural richness to the Apogee family. Steve has called Northern Virginia home for over 24 years and Delia and Pamela for over ten years.
Even the company’s name, Apogee Hardwood Cleaning, also has layers of meaning and dual significance.
The name Apogee reflects the goal of bringing customers’ flooring to its highest point, akin to its brandnew, original state, and it also pays homage to Steve’s past in the satellite industry. With a Master’s degree in satellite systems, over 30 years of serving as an airman and reservist in the Air Force, and his connection as a defense contractor, Steve brings a unique blend of technical expertise and a passion for excellence to his business venture.
“So the goal of our company is to bring a person’s hardwood floor back to its best (highest) point, which is usually when it was brand new. We want the floors looking brand new when we are done,” Steve said. The Air Force connection is also evident in Apogee’s branding, with light blue marketing materials, shirts, vans, and logos that reflect Steve’s military background. It is both a tribute to his years of service and serves as a reminder of the precision, discipline, and dedication pillars of Apogee’s approach to cleaning.
In a world where details and precision matter, Apogee Hardwood Cleaning emerges atop the competition as a company committed to restoring elegance, one floor at a time. With an unwavering focus on quality, innovation, and family values, Apogee Hardwood Cleaning stands as a testament to Bressette’s vision of bringing each floor to its Apogee– the highest point of its development.

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. All are iconic sports duos who make each other better. Rick and Lisa Perry, the dynamic duo known as “The Dream Team,” have made each other better for 41 years now. Together, they’ve created a legacy of “winning” in all aspects of their life: personally, spiritually, and professionally. From their early days in the US Army to building roots in North Stafford, their story is a testament to the power of faith, family, and a commitment to helping others.
The Perry family, including Rick and Lisa, sons, Rick, Jr. and Keoni, daughter, Jazmine, and grandchildren Aleah (9), Kensington (6), Marcus (5), and Maverick (1), along with Rick’s mom Barbara Peeples and Jazmine’s husband, Marcus Canton, is a vibrant presence in the Kings Crest neighborhood in North Stafford.
Their journey began when Rick and Lisa met at Norristown High School, in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Rick served in the Army and their sons were born while the family was stationed in Hawaii. While sacrificing the normal family life for their country and the military lifestyle, they certainly caught the travel bug. The Perry family’s favorite memories are painted with hues of adventure and love and they’ve created incredible experiences together, traveling their world, indulging in their love of cruises– especially to Aruba– and sharing laughter and a competitive spirit over family game nights.
Their favorite date night activities often include a night dining out at Kobe Japanese (their favorite restaurant), movie nights indulging in a cherished comedy, or supporting the next local church or community event.
The Perrys have called Vista Woods and Kings Crest home, and they’ve certainly made their mark on the North Stafford community. They’ve planted roots here, found a sense of community and diversity, and now help others establish their own roots through their realty business.
Their three children were actively involved in sports, with the boys excelling in soccer, and their daughter, Jazmine, shining as a cheerleader. The Perry family became a fixture at Garrisonville Elementary, AG Wright, Rockhill Elementary, North Stafford, and Mountain View High School, where Rick earned the endearing titles of “soccer dad” and “chaperone” on countless field trips.
Hobbies are an integral part of the Perry household, and the family is known for their fiercely competitive spirit during holidays when the extended family gathers. “Perry UNO,’” their unique family game with its own rules and lively banter, is a family tradition that brings joy and laughter to every gathering. Ping pong, billiards, card games, and checkers also find a place in their hearts.
Beyond the home, Rick and Lisa are active members of Victory Christian Ministries, serving as Administrators/Elders. Their commitment extends to their involvement in the Stafford 6/3 Networking Group, Lions Club, and Rick’s role in the American Legion Post 290’s Honor Guard.
Their professional journey is as inspiring as their personal one. Rick, a former US State Department technician, and Lisa, a graphic designer for various government agencies, took a bold leap into real estate, founding “The Dream Team.” Rick has helped over 500 sellers and buyers find their dream homes, while Lisa is now renowned locally as an expert in mortgages. Lisa’s real estate journey began as a licensed realtor as well, but she transitioned after about five years as she saw a need to assist buyers with homeownership and she became a full-time loan officer.
“Lisa’s attention to detail with paperwork and numbers, along with her maternal nature, made it easy for buyers who were looking for someone trustworthy,” said Rick. Adding that keeping him “in-check” is like her
“full-time job,” he laughed. Lisa’s hard work and jovial spirit are abundantly evident and community members can tell she’s “never met a stranger.” Lisa is “Rick’s biggest cheerleader” and the “catalyst of the Perry family household,” Rick explained, adding that he calls her “‘Lovely Lisa’ for obvious reasons.”
The Perrys’ love for one another is obvious, too, and this intelligent, amiable couple loves not only loving on each other but their community as well. Rick and Lisa have a well-balanced life. Their zeal and passion for real estate and their professional careers carries over into their roles within their church community, and the pride the couple takes in this work is evident:
“Lisa served as a leader for the Missionettes Girls Club in Prince William and surrounding counties and brought girls to Jesus Christ through love and acceptance,” Rick explained. “To this day, we see the impact and indelible mark Lisa and the other leaders left on the girls that have grown into beautiful young ladies and outstanding mothers.” Like his wife, Rick also left his mark on the youth in the community, serving in leadership roles with the Royal Rangers, a ministry that mentors young men, “equipping and empowering them to be the next generation of Christ-like men and lifelong servant leaders.”
Rick was affectionately known by the group as “Commander Rick” and he states that “it was an honor to see how these young men have blossomed into the outstanding fathers and servant leaders they are today.”
The Perrys’ mentorship remains a highlight of their community involvement and they offer advice to new neighbors as well that reflects their ethos: “Come expecting a diverse community filled with highly motivated individuals operating in excellence.” Hard work and play are woven seamlessly into their lives, with everything grounded in their Christian faith.
As avid Philadelphia Eagles fans, the Perrys bring a touch of their East Coast roots to North Stafford, proudly cheering on their team with a resounding “Go Birds!” and they hope their Eagles are well on their way to another Super Bowl by the time this issue gets published.
Beyond their bustling professional lives, Rick and Lisa prioritize annual cruises and family reunions, relishing the warmth of the Caribbean sun. Their love for each other, their community, and their faith shines brightly, leaving an indelible mark on the vibrant neighborhood of Kings Crest.
So, when you hear “The Dream Team” in North Stafford, you’re not just hearing a business name—it’s a reflection of the love, dedication, and community spirit that define the Perry family.

Happy New Year! Have you made your New Year’s Resolution yet? It is important for families to set goals together. Students of all ages can set personal and educational goals. Do you already do this? If so, that is fantastic. If not, why not start now? It’s a new year.
Here are a few examples:
• Have a family meeting and say it’s a new year and I/we want to know what your goals are for school, extracurriculars, etc?
• Talk about your own personal goals.
• Ask your child what his/her goals are for school? Is it to improve a grade or to join a club or team?
• Ask your child what his/her personal goals are? Is it to keep his/ her room clean, exercise, meet someone new in their grade level or class? Is it to set an appointment with their high school counselor or college advisor?
• Set a time to meet with your child individually to talk about their goals. This takes the pressure away from those annoying siblings teasing them or interrupting them while they share this information with you. Ask how you can help them achieve their goals and when they want to accomplish them. An example is a first grader that wants to get all 3’s or A’s during the next quarter or the high school student that wants to improve their grade in chemistry or to ask three teachers for letters of recommendation.
Achieving a goal is success. It’s a new year. Go for it.

“We had a 14-foot circle patio that was barely useful for much unless you wanted just a fire pit on. We contacted Jose and explained what we wanted, and it turned out great. Jose and his crews were professional and cleaned after themselves every day after the project. Had another quote done for another project coming soon” A. Price
“What a sigh of relief. Had wind damage to attic vent which had ripped off siding and gable vent of house. Of course it was going to rain this night so I’m freaking out a bit thinking thousdands of dollars of water damage. I explained my dilemma to Mr Blanco and he immediately left from a job he was finishing up in Fredericksburg. I had called numerous other companies to help but no time or people available. He arrived an hour after I called him and quickly sealed up the area from water intrusion. Great Company, Great Owner and Employees, and quick Response.” G. Johnson
Mothers are used to seeing a need and filling it. For most mothers, however, the need is less drastic than it is for Elizabeth Coulter. Her son, Louie, has a unique genetic mutation, called HUWE-1. Upon receiving the diagnosis and looking for help, Elizabeth quickly learned there was none. Well, none that focused on her son’s particular mutation. Thus, Louie’s HUWE was born.
A Wave of Diagnoses and the Birth of an Organization
Louie’s story began in 2012 when he was born with a myriad of health challenges.
“We found out soon after his birth that there was something wrong,” Elizabeth explained. “He had trouble breathing and was not moving his arms and legs.”
After months of genetic tests and no definitive answers, the Coulters moved to Baltimore to try Johns Hopkins. After a few appointments, they finally had their answer: a HUWE-1 variation. The subsequent years brought a cascade of diagnoses, including hypotonia, slow growth, autism, cortical visual impairment, and epilepsy.
“Every year has brought a new diagnosis,” Elizabeth explained. After Louie’s seizures became unbearable in 2021, with 54 different seizures after he was admitted at Johns Hopkins, Coulter had a pivotal conversation with Dr. Barañano, Louie’s neurogeneticist. Elizabeth asked the doctor how to cure him. Her response: “Short of making a drug, there is nothing you can do.”
Resolutely, Elizabeth told the doctor, “I’ll fund the cure if you can help find the researcher.” Coulter filed for nonprofit status and emailed a few moms who were involved with the HUWE-1 Facebook group, which included families from all over the world. The moms all agreed to help.
“With that, Louie’s HUWE was born.”
The Road to a Cure
Through Elizabeth’s unwavering commitment, determination, and passion, she has formed the nonprofit organization, which dedicates itself to raising awareness and funds for children affected by the HUWE-1 gene mutation. This genetic anomaly manifests itself in various ways, causing epilepsy, autism, growth problems and delays, muscular issues, and more.
The group has grown to include a dozen dedicated moms, all working tirelessly towards finding a cure. Currently, the organization aims to raise $250,000 for a drug trial at Seattle Children’s Hospital, focusing on alleviating epilepsy and the various other maladies caused by the genetic mutation. Over the last two years, they’ve raised $100,000, but they remain a ways away from their goal.
What is profoundly different about Louie’s HUWE is that it is the only organization of its kind and is recognized globally.
“We want to help every child around the globe with HUWE-1, no matter how severe their variation or how far they are,” Elizabeth said.
“Rare But Everywhere” is the organization’s philosophy, reflecting their commitment to aiding every child globally affected by HUWE-1, regardless of the severity of their condition or geographical location. The organization seeks to provide hope and support to families facing the challenges of this rare genetic mutation.
And they’re off to a great start. What sets Louie’s HUWE apart is their remarkable commitment to ensuring that every penny raised goes directly towards finding a cure (less than 1% is allocated to overhead costs), unique in an era where administrative costs can often consume a significant portion of funds.
Smiling Through Adversity
Elizabeth draws her inspiration from her son, Louie, who faces tremendous daily pain with an infectious smile and a content heart. Louie’s favorite thing is a simple circle.
“He will stare at a Ferris wheel all day,” Elizabeth explained. “If you ever see a kid out in the community with a helmet on and no bike in sight, there’s a good chance that kid is Louie,” who wears a helmet to protect him from his daily dozens of seizures in case he is not caught in time.
“Come over, say hi, and give him a hug,” Elizabeth said. “Because he is non-verbal, he will give a big smile back. Although he will not be able to say it, just know that you will have made his day.”
Louie’s HUWE invites the community to join them for their inaugural “One in a Million” Gala on January 20, 2024 at Potomac Point Winery. Local businesses are encouraged to sponsor, and the organization is accepting tax-deductible gifts for auction. The gala promises to be a night of celebration, compassion, and a shared commitment to funding a drug trial and taking a significant step towards finding a cure and improving the lives of those affected by HUWE-1.
“We hope to reach every child with HUWE-1 in the entire world,” said Coulter, “including those who are born with HUWE-1 in Stafford today and those who will be born 50 years from now.”

Real talk: I haven’t always been the best cook. I essentially learned to cook from ordering HelloFresh in my B.K. (before kids) time, telling myself, “I may not know how to cook, but I can certainly read.” Ordering those meal kits helped give me the confidence to mix and match certain main entrees and sides, trade out ingredients for what fit my tastes better, and make things my own so I began playing with some older family recipes as well. This recipe is adapted from my mother Nancy Skarupa’s cajun shrimp chowder. I’ve taken a few liberties with one of my all-time favorite seasonings: Slap Ya Mama! Warning: it slaps!
Time: ~45 minutes
Serving Size: Serves 6
Ingredients
• 6-8 slices of bacon (chopped)-- I ascribe to the life philosophy of “bacon makes everything better,” so I tend to add more.
• 1 tbsp. butter
• 2 cloves of garlic (again, I lean towards “more is better” when it comes to garlic and minced makes life easier)
• 1 lb. yellow potatoes (chopped– I try to get 1 cm cubes)
• 3 thyme sprigs (dried seasoning works too, to taste)
• 3 cups sweet corn (or 2 cans)
• ½ tsp - 2 tsp. Slap Ya Mama Cajun seasoning (I tend to add more to individual bowls, as I have three young kids who like spicy one day and hate it the next)
• 1 lb. shrimp (peeled already; I prefer jumbo, but it’s whatever is on sale, let’s be honest)
• 1 medium onion (chopped; take your pick of yellow or Vidalia)
• 2 tbsp. flour
• 4 cups chicken broth (low sodium if needed)
• 2 green onions (chopped)
• ¾ cup heavy cream
• salt & pepper to taste (and more Slap Ya Mama for an extra kick)

If you want to contribute to our recipe corner email mhardgrove@bestversionmedia.com
1. Defrost shrimp (if frozen) and pat shrimp dry; season shrimp all over with Slap Ya Mama, salt, and pepper
2. In a large pot over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy (6-7 minutes, depending on your interpretation of crispy)
3. Remove cooked bacon onto a paper towel-lined plate. Do not drain bacon fat!
4. Add shrimp to bacon fat and cook until pink– about 2 minutes per side. Once cooked, move shrimp to the plate with the bacon.
5. Now, drain the bacon fat and melt the butter in the pot, scraping up any browned bits at the bottom with a wooden spoon.
6. Add the onion and cook until soft ~5 min.
7. Stir in the garlic and flour and cook about a min more.
8. Add the potatoes, chicken broth, thyme, and green onions, and bring to a boil.
9. Reduce heat and cover. Simmer until potatoes are tender ~10 min.
10. Stir in the corn and cream and simmer another 5 minutes.
11. Turn off the heat and stir in the cooked shrimp. Add Slap Ya Mama on top.
12. Serve with bacon as garnish on top or mixed in– whatever your preference. Add any additional green onions as garnish as well and ENJOY!
This is a family and friends’ favorite. Perfect as an appetizer or soup course for special occasions and multiple-course dinners or just on a cold, winter day.

For those seeking a more specialized form of detox, Bear River offers castor oil packs. This ancient remedy involves applying warm castor oil to the skin, helping to break down fatty deposits and nodules. It’s a gentle, soothing process that complements their overall commitment to natural wellness.
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s often difficult to find moments of true mindfulness and relaxation. Bear River Massage Services understands this struggle and makes it a core element of their practice. During massages, therapists encourage clients to take a few deep breaths, directing their focus inward. By guiding clients to consciously relax their minds and bodies, they create an environment where stress melts away.
Clients are gently prompted to visualize their muscles softening with each exhale, fostering a deeper state of relaxation. This mindfulness not only enhances the massage experience but also equips clients with a valuable tool for managing stress in their daily lives.
At Bear River Massage Services, the staff isn’t just a team; they’re a family. Owner Linda Osorio holds a deep affection for each member, fostering a supportive and nurturing work environment. The staff’s camaraderie extends beyond the treatment room; they regularly engage in yoga and meditation together, strengthening their bond and enhancing their ability to provide top-notch care.
Osorio’s own family is integral to the Bear River experience. Her sister, Alma, serves as the manager, ensuring smooth operations, while her mother, Mireya, welcomes guests at the front desk with warmth and professionalism. It’s this blend of professionalism and personal connection that sets Bear River apart.
Bear River Massage Services draws its name and inspiration from owner Linda Osorio’s proud Colombian heritage. Her last name, Osorio, translates to “bear” in English, while “rio” means “river.” These elements came together to form the name Bear River—a symbol of strength and tranquility. The cabin-themed atmosphere was carefully crafted to transport clients to a serene mountain retreat. During the buildout of the space, the team embraced sustainability by repurposing materials wherever possible, embodying their commitment to both the environment and their community.
Bear River Massage Services has become a cherished gem in Stafford County, Virginia. Linda Osorio and her team have created not just a business but a sanctuary where clients can escape the stresses of everyday life and find solace in natural healing and relaxation. Their dedication to mindfulness, family values, and holistic wellness makes Bear River Massage Services a beacon of hope and tranquility for all who enter.
So, if you find yourself in need of a rejuvenating escape, look no further than Bear River—the name says it all: strong as a bear and tranquil as a river.
