Do You Have Poor Home Performance?

Did you know that your attic can be the reason why your upstairs bedrooms are too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter? It can also be the reason you have high energy bills. So how can you tell if you have poor “home performance”?

The areas of our homes that we see the least often can have the greatest impact on how we feel every day in the areas that we spend the most time in. Most attics are insufficiently or ineffectively insulated. Older homes in this area often have less insulation in the attics than is needed to properly insulate the home. This can happen over time, as insulation settles and as external air is able to work into an attic, bringing dirt, allergens and often unwanted pests with it. Many newer homes are built very quickly and with the least expensive materials available: Meeting “code” does not mean using the highest-quality materials.

Improving the quality of insulation in your attic can greatly impact not only your home’s comfort, but also the cost to heat and cool a home year-round. “Air sealing” is the most important step in any attic project. Eliminating the ability for air to move freely in and out of an attic, and keeping conditioned air in the rooms of a home that it is intended to heat or cool, can help reduce energy costs by as much as 25% in most homes. Giving attention to the HVAC ducts in an attic can have a similar effect. Imagine a metal HVAC duct running through an attic in Northern VA in February. It could be 20 to 30 degrees

in the attic, and if that metal HVAC duct has heated air trying to travel through it, the attic air is a “hostile environment” for the heated air created by the HVAC system. By the time the heated air passes through the cold HVAC duct, it is no longer at the temperature it needs to be to heat the rooms of the home. This can cause people to turn up the heat or to have their system running more often than it needs to. HVAC ducts in an attic should be sealed to prevent conditioned air from escaping, and should be insulated with either spray foam insulation or wrap insulation, or be buried in cellulose blown insulation.

These are just a couple of examples of how the space in your home that you don’t always see, can have a significant impact on a homeowner or resident.

There are few businesses in our field in Northern Virginia. Most of our competitors do not take the time to look at the science of each home like we do. Finding design flaws and common issues in neighborhoods with the same home builder has made us very popular with some HOAs and neighbors who like to share with one another. Teaching our clients about how their homes work is always rewarding. The “lightbulb moment” when they learn something they hadn’t realized about their home before is always fun. Operating for almost 10 years, we have helped thousands of homeowners and businesses become more comfortable and more energy efficient. Most of our services will pay for themselves via energy savings in 5 to 10 years, and we offer a generous referral bonus for clients that tell their friends about us.

The Romero Family: A LEGACY OF SERVICE TO COUNTRY AND COMMUNITY

The Romero family, residing in St. George’s Estates, is a shining example of dedication to their country and community. With a rich history of military service and local involvement, they have left each place they’ve called home better than they’ve found it. Stafford has been fortunate to have them as residents since 2004, and they’ve become an integral part of the community through their active participation in sports and business.

Chris Romero, 53, and Jeanie Romero, 53, are the pillars of the Romero family. Chris and Jeanie met, and their journey began in Fort Hood, Texas, where both now husband and wife served and were stationed. They fell in love and became a dual military family, which is a challenge in itself, and took on the challenge of raising children together. The couple has two incredible daughters: Alejandra “Ali” Velazquez, 29, and Casandra “Sis” Romero, 25. Ali is married to

Miguel Velazquez, 32, and they have two children, Caroline, 5, and Santiago, 2. The Romeros also look forward to officially welcoming Kalief, Casandra’s fiance, into the family soon, and Chris’s brother, Rommel “Chato” Romero, 43, is also integral to the family.

Jeanie served in the Army for 20 years, joining in 1990 as a lithographer. After deploying during Operation Desert Storm, she was stationed in Texas, Germany, Korea, and Virginia. Jeanie has continued serving her country post-military retirement as a Department of Defense employee at the Pentagon for the last 14 years. Chris also served for seven years and has been self-employed for 24 years, running his own businesses before buying Kitchens For You, where he continues working now, fulfilling the CEO role.

The Romero family’s commitment to military service extends beyond Chris and Jeanie. Miguel Velazquez, Ali’s husband, also served for seven years, and Chris’s brother Rommel “Chato” Romero served in the US Army from September 2000 to 2004 and deployed to Iraq from March 2003 to 2004. The family’s military background has instilled a sense of duty and honor that resonates through their actions and community involvement.

In addition to running a successful business, Chris has coached in various capacities for most of his life.

“My dad actually started coaching me when I was 5,” said Ali. “Starting with T-ball when we lived at Ft. Hood, he coached me through parks and rec, my travel team years, and up until I was 15.” When the family moved to Stafford, Chris continued to coach his girls on various softball teams and even had the privilege of coaching Sis when she played at North Stafford. Once Casandra graduated from North Stafford, he moved on to Colonial Forge, where he was an assistant coach for the girls’ softball team from 2018 until 2023.

While the Romeros value the lessons learned through service and sports, they are also quite proud of all of their family members’ achievements within the classroom. Ali has a bachelor’s in marketing and is pursuing her master’s in personal relations. Casandra graduated from VCU in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in advertising, and her fiancé, Kalief, also a VCU graduate, holds a master’s degree in business from Louisiana State University in Shreveport. Their academic achievements are a source of pride and inspiration for the entire family.

When she’s not busy with wedding planning, Casandra is a Project Manager for Clayton Homes, overseeing project sites and leading others toward their homeownership goals. This passion for helping others was instilled by Chris and Jeanie when the girls were young, but it has also been fostered through Chris’s guidance in business: both daughters have worked alongside their father in the family business.

“Both my sister and I have worked with my dad throughout the years, which has been fun,” Casandra said. “He has given us responsibilities such as taking over social media, pursuing marketing opportunities, and coming in to take photos of finished projects with clients.” This hands-on experience has been an invaluable learning experience and fun for both daughters.

“It has been a blessing for sure, not only because it has given both of us the opportunity to use what we’ve learned in school and apply it to real-world situations and build our resumes for the future, but getting to watch his [Dad’s] work ethic and see the relationships he has built with people has been awesome!” Ali explained.

What has been even more “awesome” and amazing for the Romero family is having everyone back home and close to each other again. While Ali’s husband Miguel served in the Army, the family was stationed overseas. Both children were also born overseas, Caroline in South Korea (2019) and Santiago in Germany (2022), so Chris and Jeanie are incredibly grateful their grandchildren are now stateside.

“It has been really great being back, especially since having our children,” said Ali. “It was hard sharing moments and highlights from our lives while living so far away. My parents are thrilled we’re closer to them now since they are both very devoted grandparents!” Chris and Jeanie enjoy “spoiling” their grandchildren and pets like any grandparent.

The Romero family also includes a menagerie of pets. They have three dogs: Teddy, 8, Nala, 6, and Ozzy, 2, and three cats: Nugget, 11, Miley, 5, and Tobi, 1. These furry companions add joy and warmth to their household.

A fun sports rivalry also heats things up around the Romero house in the fall. Chris and Jeanie support the Cowboys on the gridiron, while other family members have become Commanders fans. This creates a fun atmosphere, and Chris and Jeanie often travel to Dallas to support their beloved team.

“We can’t wait to go watch the Cowboys play in October in Dallas, where we also get to visit with our family,” Jeanie said. When the Cowboys come into town, it becomes a family affair at FedEx. The family loves bonding over everything Stafford has to offer as well.

When the Romeros moved to Stafford, they were smitten from the start. “We moved in 2004 and immediately fell in love with the area,” explained Chris. “There’s so much to do, phenomenal schools, and we got our daughters involved in the sports programs immediately.” The family felt welcomed, and they appreciated the vibrant community as well as the recreational opportunities for their family. Even now, as grandparents, they enjoy “cheering on our grandchildren on the soccer field in the fall and spring.”

In their free time, the Romeros enjoy exploring downtown Fredericksburg, walking trails, and local attractions like Funland and various wineries and breweries. They love dining at Brock’s, Rebellion, and local BBQ spots and engaging in activities like bowling and going to the movie theaters. The family’s annual beach trip is also a cherished time and tradition that brings them together each summer at Virginia Beach.

The Romero family’s story is one of dedication and commitment to both service and community. Their journey from military bases across the globe to the streets of Stafford is a testament to their adaptability and strong family bonds. Whether it’s through their contributions to local sports, their entrepreneurial ventures, or their active participation in community events, the Romeros have consistently demonstrated what it means to give back and make a positive impact. Their values of hard work, education, and community service are evident in every aspect of their lives. From both Chris and Jeanie’s distinguished military careers to their daughters’ professional achievements and community involvement, the Romeros embody the spirit of dedication and togetherness. They have truly found a home in Stafford, where their story of service and commitment continues to unfold, and they get to write it– together.

Beyond her roles as a dedicated wife and mother, Karie is a passionate educator, talented musician, and enthusiastic traveler. Her love for exploring new cultures and experiencing the world is matched only by her appreciation for a good cup of coffee.

What do Leonardo da Vinci and this Italian girl have in common? With my Italian heritage, my heart has a special place for stylish tile and stone design. Comfort Paws: Integrative Veterinary Care for Pets in Stafford, Virginia

Comfort Paws, LLC, an integrative veterinary practice based in Stafford, Virginia, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for pets through a variety of specialized services. Founded by Dr. Katrina Spies, Comfort Paws offers pain management services such as acupuncture, rehabilitation, laser therapy, herbal medicine, quality of life assessments, hospice and palliative care, and food therapy. To ensure accessibility for all pet parents, the practice provides house calls, in-clinic, and telehealth appointments.

Dr. Katrina Spies has been an active member of the Northern Virginia veterinary community for over 15 years, primarily working as a small animal emergency veterinarian. Reflecting on her extensive experience, she shared, “While I found it rewarding to assist animals in emergent situations, I often felt limited in my ability to provide comprehensive, ongoing care and pain management for many senior or lame patients.” This realization sparked her journey into integrative medicine in 2020, leading to the creation of Comfort Paws.

Driven by a passion to enhance the well-being of pets, Dr. Spies pursued various certifications to broaden her expertise. She explained, “I earned certifications as a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarian (CHPV), Certified Canine Rehabilitation Veterinarian (CCRV), and Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA).” Additionally, she is working towards becoming a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner (CVPP), Certified Veterinary Chinese Herbalist (CVCH), and Certified Veterinary Food Therapist (CVFT). Her dedication to continuous learning underscores her commitment to providing individualized, integrative care.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Spies enjoys a fulfilling personal life in Stafford with her husband, two dogs, and a parrot. Originally from the Midwest, the Spies are avid fans of the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers. They love traveling, especially to sunny destinations.

Dr. Spies and her team at Comfort Paws are eager to become more involved in the community. She invites local businesses and organizations to reach out if they are interested in hosting talks or workshops to promote pet wellness and education. “Comfort Paws would love to become more involved in our community,” she emphasized.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit Comfort Paws’ website or contact them directly. Dr. Spies and her team look forward to serving the community and enhancing the lives of pets and their families.

At Comfort Paws, the philosophy is simple yet profound: “We believe pets have the right to live their best lives possible and to age gracefully, free from pain.” This mission is at the heart of their services, which aim to keep pets healthy longer, help them recover from injuries more quickly, and maintain their dignity and independence as they age.

Dr. Spies finds immense inspiration in the tangible improvements she sees in her patients’ lives. “My greatest inspiration comes from witnessing the significant improvements in my patients’ quality of life that can result from even small changes,” she said. She also takes great joy in educating pet owners on how to best support their furry friends, stating, “This personalized approach and client education allow me to make a meaningful impact on both the pets and their families.”

In an effort to foster community engagement, Dr. Spies encourages pet owners to explore integrative veterinary care. “Comfort Paws collaborates closely with your primary care veterinarian to provide complementary services that support comprehensive care for your pets,” she noted. By integrating various therapeutic approaches, the team at Comfort Paws aims to deliver the best possible outcomes for their patients.

And there’s no need to apologize for bad breath or gassy patients with Dr. Spies as she lost her sense of smell in a childhood accident: “I’m the last one to notice!” Dr. Spies laughed.

FUR-GET-ME-NOT:

Helping Pets Thrive During the Back-to-School Transition

As families gear up for the new school year, it’s crucial to remember our furry companions who also feel the impact of changing routines. Our beloved dogs and cats experience stress during this transition, making it essential to consider their well-being alongside our own preparations.

Establish New Routines

Just like children, pets thrive on routine. Establish a consistent schedule for feeding, bathroom breaks, walks, playtime, and bedtime to provide stability and a sense of security. Predictability alleviates anxiety and smooths the transition to the new schedule.

Prioritize Exercise and Socialization

Regular exercise and social interaction are vital for physical and emotional health and preventing obesity and destructive behaviors. Dogs need daily walks and play sessions that stimulate their minds and bodies. When appropriate, consider arranging supervised playdates with other dogs.

Cats need physical activity, too! To satisfy their natural instincts, provide climbing structures, scratching posts, interactive toys, and activities that mimic hunting, like chasing laser pointers or feather toys. Some cats even enjoy supervised outdoor exploration on a harness and leash.

Create a Safe Haven

The hustle and bustle of the school year can overwhelm pets. Designate a quiet, comfortable space to retreat to when pets need solitude. Include favorite toys and a cozy bed, and use a pheromone diffuser, such as Feliway (cats) and Adaptil (dogs), to promote calmness and reduce anxiety. Secure trash bins and remove potential hazards to pet-proof the environment and prevent accidents or ingestion of harmful substances.

Stimulate Their Minds

Combat boredom by introducing stimulating activities that challenge problem-solving skills. Treat-dispensing toys and puzzle feeders keep pets engaged, especially when home alone. In your absence, play soothing music or an animal-themed show for auditory stimulation.

Healthy Eating and Hydration

Proper nutrition is fundamental for everyone’s health! Feed pets high-quality food appropriate for their age, size, and breed—ask your veterinarian for recommendations tailored to your pet’s specific needs. Avoid table scraps and toxic foods, like xylitol (artificial sweetener), chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, grapes, and onions. Be sure your pet always has access to clean, fresh water to stay hydrated.

Schedule A Health Check-Up

An annual physical exam with your veterinarian, along with vaccinations, preventive care for parasites, and routine screenings, are crucial for preventing and detecting health issues early on. Discuss concerns with your veterinarian and follow through with recommendations for maintaining your pet’s health.

As you prepare for the upcoming school year, remember to prioritize your pets’ needs as well. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can create a smooth transition and foster happiness and well-being throughout the year. Here’s to a successful school year for all members of your family— two- and four-legged alike!

HEART-CENTERED ACADEMY:

CULTIVATING CONFIDENCE AND COMMUNITY

Established in 2023, Heart-Centered Academy has become more than just an educational institution; it has become synonymous with hope, offering support for students and their families. This faith-based, non-profit learning center, led by Executive Director Melissa Coleman, offers a unique blend of individualized and small-group support tailored to meet the diverse needs of children from elementary to high school.

“We offer services such as formal and informal testing, ADHD support, academic support, consultation, and advocacy,” Melissa explained. Heart-Centered Academy provides a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive.

“We are blessed to have providers come to Heart-Centered Academy to ensure our students’ needs are met.”

Melissa shared her journey and the philosophy that underpins the academy.

“In mid-August 2023, God called upon me to open my own facility after years of revamping and starting up different programs in various school systems,” Melissa recalled. “After sharing my testimony as a former special education teacher and a parent of a child with disabilities, the community came together and wanted to help get the building ready to accept students. Fast forward eight weeks from that day in August, we not only had a building to accept students but also opened our doors and welcomed students, their families, and our supporting providers.”

Heart-Centered Academy now has a speech pathologist, a clinical psychologist, and two therapy dogs who come to the academy and comprehensively support students’ needs. A key element of Heart-Centered Academy’s success is its emphasis on evidence-based teaching strategies tailored to each student’s unique learning needs. This individualized approach ensures that no two sessions are exactly alike.

“We teach students how they learn to ensure they can be independent and successful learners,” Melissa said, and further explained the academy’s philosophy: “We are committed to providing a positive, safe, faith-focused, and stimulating environment for children to learn, where all are valued. We intend that all children should have a love for learning, achieve their potential, and become independent life-long learners.”

The academy’s impact is palpable, with 16 regularly attending students and countless families benefiting from its consultation, advocacy, and testing services. Additionally, Heart-Centered Academy partnered with a local middle school last year, serving 102 students once a week for about eight to nine weeks.

“Our numbers continue to grow for our small yet mighty center,” Melissa proudly stated.

Melissa’s inspiration for her work stems from a deep-seated faith and a profound commitment to serving others.

“First and foremost, God is my inspiration,” she shared. “I am inspired by the families we serve and the community who have poured their hearts into us. I have seen the many sides of public and private school education. There is no perfect system, but I do believe that teachers are doing their best to meet the various needs of their students in large classroom sizes. Knowing the budget and resource challenges, Heart-Centered Academy supports not only families but also schools and their teachers.”

The joy and fulfillment Melissa derives from her work are evident in her energy and passion for the academy’s daily operations. “My enthusiasm for coming to work every day comes from seeing the success of our students, the boost in their confidence, and knowing that families have a safe place to turn to,” she said. Heart-Centered Academy is not just a place for academic growth but also a hub for community engagement and fun. The academy hosts monthly events for its students, such as stuffed animal sleepovers, camping nights, movie nights, an upcoming music night, and an end-of-summer kickoff celebration. “We invite talent from our community to make the events memorable,” Melissa mentioned. One of the academy’s core philosophies is building confidence in its students. “Students who come to us know they are struggling and quietly seek acceptance and understanding—behavior is communication. Our students know we know how they learn, and it’s okay; in fact, it’s awesome,” Melissa emphasized. This supportive and affirming environment helps students flourish both academically and personally.

Her commitment to her family matches Melissa’s dedication to Heart-Centered Academy. She is a mother of two boys, Bradley (12) and Benny (10), and is supported by her amazing husband, John. Together, they enjoy farming, baseball, and spending time with friends.

Looking ahead, Heart-Centered Academy continues to seek ways to expand its reach and support within the community. Melissa encourages community members to visit the academy’s website at heartcenteredacademy.org for more information and to consider donating children’s books for their lending library. She also expressed her gratitude for the Fredericksburg community.

“It is a blessing— to say the least— as to how amazing our community is in supporting and uplifting one another.”

With help from the community, Heart-Centered Academy continues to thrive, making a lasting impact on its learners, fostering a love for learning, and building confidence in its students.

WHY EVERY HOUSE NEEDS LANDSCAPE LIGHTING

In the realm of home improvement, landscape lighting is often overlooked. Yet, it’s one of the most impactful investments you can make for your property. At Ignite Illumination, we believe every house deserves the transformative power of well-designed outdoor lighting. Here’s why landscape lighting is not just a luxury but a necessity for every home.

Enhancing Curb Appeal

First impressions matter, and your home’s exterior is the first thing people see. Landscape lighting dramatically enhances the curb appeal of your property. Strategically placed lights can highlight architectural features, garden landscapes, and pathways, making your home stand out in the neighborhood. A well-lit house exudes warmth and hospitality, creating a welcoming ambiance that speaks volumes about your personal style and attention to detail.

Improving Security and Safety

One of the most significant benefits of landscape lighting is improving security and safety. A well-lit exterior deters potential intruders by eliminating dark areas where they might hide. Pathway lights, spotlights, and motion sensor lights can illuminate all the vulnerable points around your property, providing peace of mind. Additionally, landscape lighting ensures safe navigation around your home, reducing the risk of trips and falls, especially on steps and uneven paths.

Extending Outdoor Living Spaces

Your outdoor space is an extension of your home, and landscape lighting allows you to enjoy it well into the evening. Whether you have a patio, deck, garden, or pool area, lighting can create a magical atmosphere for entertaining guests or relaxing with family. It extends the usability of your outdoor areas, making them perfect for hosting dinner parties, barbeques, or simply enjoying a quiet night under the stars.

Highlighting Landscaping and Architectural Features

Proper lighting can showcase the beauty of your home’s landscaping and architectural elements. Uplighting can highlight trees, shrubs, and sculptures, while downlighting can emphasize garden beds and water features. Accent lighting can reveal the textures of stone walls or the intricate details of

your home’s facade. This enhances the visual appeal of your property and allows you to appreciate the beauty of your landscape at all hours.

Increasing Property Value

Investing in landscape lighting can increase the value of your home. Potential buyers often view a well-lit exterior as a sign of a well-maintained property. It adds to the overall aesthetic appeal and functionality, making your home more attractive on the market. In many cases, the return on investment for landscape lighting is significant, as it combines beauty, security, and practicality.

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

Modern landscape lighting solutions are incredibly energy-efficient. With the advent of LED technology, homeowners can enjoy beautifully lit exteriors without significantly increasing energy bills. LED lights consume less power and have a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs, resulting in cost savings over time.

Personalization and Creativity

Landscape lighting offers endless opportunities for personalization and creativity. With various lighting styles, colors, and fixtures available, you can create a unique look that reflects your personality and complements your home’s design. The possibilities are limitless, from soft, ambient lighting to vibrant, dramatic effects. Like those at Ignite Illumination, professional lighting designers can help you develop a customized plan that enhances your property’s best features.

Embrace the Brilliance of Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting is an essential element of modern home design. It goes beyond mere aesthetics, offering practical benefits like enhanced security, increased property value, and extended outdoor usability. At Ignite Illumination, we specialize in creating tailored lighting solutions that transform your property into a beautifully illuminated haven. Embrace the brilliance of landscape lighting and experience the difference it makes to your home. For expert advice and installation services, contact Ignite Illumination today. • What is your student’s grade point average (GPA)?

• Create a 3 ring binder for your students to keep certificates, awards, acknowledgements received throughout their high school career.

Middle School

This is the time to shore up the gaps students may still have in preparation for high school. If your student is behind, it’s time to double down and help them. Ask the school counselor and specialists for tips. These years are challenging for students as they go through puberty. The goal is to have them at grade level in reading and math before 9th grade begins. If your student is at or above grade level, then the goal is for them to maintain that and not stagnate. I recommend looking at the high school tips above and a few tips below:

• Google Career Cluster Survey and have your student take it and answer it honestly. It correlates to Career Paths.

• 7th grade parents create a 5 year plan with the counselor.

• 8th grade parents create a 4 year plan and go on official and unofficial college tours. The College Fair in the Fall at the Spotsylvania Mall is a great opportunity.

• Take the PSAT

Elementary School

You are your child’s first teacher. Reading to your child on a regular basis before school begins helps create the love of reading and sets the foundation before elementary school starts. Do not underestimate the power and positive impact of reading. The goal is to make sure your student is on grade level in reading and math by the end of third grade.

• You, the teacher, the counselor and school administration are on the same team.

• Attend all parent-teacher conferences.

• Ask for copies of all or results from all assessments given for your student.

• Always be professional and communicate the positive and negative issues with the teacher first. If you aren’t satisfied with the results then move to the administration.

• The school specialists are also resources for families.

By failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail.

BEAUTY IN OUR BACKYARD

It has been a little over two years since our family moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia. Fredericksburg is quite different from our hometown, with its hustle and proximity to our nation’s capital. Nicely situated in this new place we call home, our eyes have been opened to the many gems of nature and history embedded in our local community and nearby towns. Our family time explorations have led us to walks that made us feel like we should be in the midst of an enchanted forest with fairies, caverns of stalagmites and stalactites creating a scene that is a reminder of Lord of the Rings, and battlefields where soldiers stood and fought for what they believed in. What beauty, rich in creation and history, right in our backyard!

You may have lived in Virginia all of your life, or maybe you are a newcomer to the area, but you don’t have to wait any longer to take in its breathtaking beauty. Summertime sunrises and sunsets that display the splendor of heaven can be found in our local Shenandoah National Park. You can easily find the park and all the sunrise and sunset lookout points from the National Park App. Pack a breakfast, lunch, or dinner and enjoy the majesty of this local national park. You can also find hikes for every adventure seeker in the family. The app lists the hikes, severity, and estimated completion time, so any hiker-- novice or veteran can enjoy a plethora of wildlife. White-tailed deer, black bears, bobcats, squirrels, lizards, snakes, and turtles roam freely. Bird watchers love the landscape of the Blue Ridge, which has more than 190 birds to observe and enjoy. Stargazing is another activity that can be cherished with friends and family. The easy accessibility of Skyline Drive allows the stargazer to capture the luminescence of the moon, Milky Way, and clusters of constellations.

The mysterious Luray Caverns, conveniently located close to Shenandoah National Park, are a must-see. This fantastic site is the most extensive cavern system in the East, with a unique underground landscape that includes mirrored pools, mudflows, towering columns, stalagmites, and stalactites. The paved, lit paths make it easy to explore this deep underground landscape and stand in awe of the towering cathedral ceilings. With a pitch-black background, glittering rocks, and jolting earth, the Luray Caverns are a place where you can let your imagination run wild.

In our backyard, on four battlefields-- Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Court House, and The Wilderness-- brothers fought against each other for their valued ideals. At any of these historic sites, your mind can drift from the serene, peaceful landscape and nature walks to the ferocious cannon booms and blood-stained battlefields. It’s a powerful reminder of how our nation was transformed forever. Enter our nation’s past and explore the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, which contains the four battlefields, historic buildings such as Jackson’s death site and Salem Church, and exhibits and tours. It is one of 400 national parks found on the NPS app.

A vacation to distant national parks may not be possible for the remaining summer weeks, but you can enjoy the fascinating sights in beautiful Virginia.
