ABrookside and old Town

s we trudge our way through the slush and mud of this winter, which has seen several back-to-back storms—something one weather reporter said hasn’t happened in our area in more than a decade—it’s hard to remember that the warm sunshine of spring is just around the corner.

I’ve never been someone who is afflicted by SAD – or seasonal affective disorder – but this winter, with its gray, gloomy days, has impacted me more than usual. Some days I have found it tempting to roll over and sleep the day away. However, my responsibilities always tug me out of my cocoon of comfort. When I found myself drawn back to the comforts of my warm bed, I realized that a change of surroundings might improve my outlook and I’d haul the family off somewhere. Maybe it was a trampoline park, maybe it was an afternoon skiing. But getting away from the usual surroundings seemed to help significantly.

This month, we introduce you to Nadine Rischmeyer, someone who sought a big change in her surroundings. Last fall, she packed up what belongings she didn’t sell and moved more than 4,100 miles to Broad Run, Virginia. Nadine is embracing her new community and looking to contribute as a business owner. Learn more about her efforts on page 6.

We also share with you information about the 7th annual Hero’s Bridge Vietnam Veterans 5K. This event falls on March 29, Vietnam Veterans Day, this year. Proceeds from this event are used to provide veterans aged 65 and older with supportive services so they may age with dignity. Read about this nonprofit on page 14.

I hope this Spring your surroundings bring you comfort and inspiration and maybe even a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow!

RISCHMEYER Brings Big Plans for her New Community

Nadine Rischmeyer left her small Bavarian village in October of 2024 because she felt the winters were too cold and she wanted to experience more than her village had to offer. Little did she know that her destination was experiencing one of its colder and more prolonged winters in history.

Nadine thanks her father for her wanderlust. Now retired, he was an international wine seller, and travelled the world with Nadine and her mother to meet wine makers. She first visited the United States when she was 15, albeit on the West Coast.

After earning her PhD from the International School of Management, she found enormous success growing her project management business in Europe over the past decade and enjoyed meeting new people.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many of her speaking engagements that had transitioned online remained there. She felt too much of her time was spent in front of her computer and the call of the wild grew louder. “I wanted space,

land and a farm. And that was just too hard to achieve in Germany. I wanted to leave Germany,” she said. Nadine still has two horses and a pet dog in Germany.

She managed her business from Ulm, known for being the birthplace of Albert Einstein and began to look for opportunities abroad when Virginia piqued her interest. Intrigued with its proximity to the nation’s capital, she visited the area and fell in love with its rolling hills and distant vistas.

Nadine accepted everything Virginia had to offer and made plans to relocate.

She didn’t waste any time after she touched down stateside. With what few belongings she didn’t sell still in boxes, she set out to meet elected officials in Warrenton and Fauquier and learn what she needed to operate a small business.

Today, Nadine manages Scavenges Tix, a “matchmaking” service that pairs corporate businesses with rural escapes for team building opportunities. “I want to promote everything that this county has to offer and give people

who work in more urban areas the chances to experience Fauquier,” she said. She has big plans for the business and hopes to see it established in every state, creating a network of spectacular tourist destinations, showcasing the very best of each locale.

It’s just one more great leap that Nadine is taking. The spirited adventurer already has her Tae Kwon Do black belt, her sailing license, a SCUBA diving certification, has taught herself to play the piano, has played the violin in an orchestra, is an experienced show jumper, is the founding president of the Ulm Lions Club, has skied the Alps, gone on safari, and is an experienced fisherwoman and hunter.

All at the young age of 31.

But her adventures are not over yet. She would like to earn a skydiving license and climb to the “top of Europe,” Mont Blanc in the French Alps. She also plans to run a marathon someday.

When she isn’t working to meet the challenging goals she's set for herself, Nadine will be studying medicine, a topic that has always intrigued her.

Fauquier Health Notes:

PACU nurse receives DAISY Award honor after two previous nominations

April VanBuecken, RN, DNP, MHSA was named Fauquier Health’s DAISY Award Honoree for the fourth quarter of 2024. April has been nominated twice previously for the prestigious award. The DAISY Award celebrates and recognizes nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers.

April, a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) nurse, was nominated by a patient who had been under April’s care. “I am honored to nominate her in recognition of her extraordinary dedication, compassion and outstanding skill,” wrote the patient. “She exemplified the very essence of nursing excellence, providing compassionate, safe, patientcentered care to me during my time in the PACU. Her ability to empathize was remarkable, going above and beyond to ensure that I felt valued, heard and respected.”

April began her relationship with Fauquier Health in 2018 as a nursing instructor with Shenandoah University, bringing nursing students to Fauquier Health for clinical rotations. Three years ago, April joined the nursing team at the hospital’s PACU. “I love interacting with people and providing them with the care they deserve. It gives me great pleasure to use the knowledge I have gained during my career to help them feel safe and comforted throughout their recovery. This includes educating them on their illness and how to care for themselves when they go home.”

April received her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina and went on to earn a Masters in Nursing Administration and a Masters in Health Services Administration from Armstrong Atlantic State

before earning a Doctorate in Nursing Practice

Toni Maxwell, APRN, FNP-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at Fauquier Health praised April. “At Fauquier Health, our nurses are the best of the best. For April to have been part of our nursing team for only three years and receive two DAISY nominations and a DAISY award speaks to the extraordinary care she provides!”

Marine Corps Veteran, Lewis Ray, Laces up for the 7th Vietnam Veterans Day 5K on March 29

At the 2024 Vietnam Veterans 5K, 82-year-old Marine Corps veteran Lewis Ray finished with a time of 1:01:52. This year, while Lewis has signed up for the March 29th event, he will participate by cheering everyone on from the sidelines as he recovers from a recent procedure.

The veteran joined the Marine Corps in 1960 and retired in 1980. “Marines, the few, the proud SEMPER FI,” Ray said. He wanted to be a Marine for as long as he could remember. “They are the first to land, the first to be called in, and I had a lot of respect for that,” he said.

An athlete his entire life, Ray maintained a rigorous daily running routine. Before going to Vietnam, while stationed in Philadelphia, he would run to the Liberty Bell and back. He always made time to run. “I love to run. It’s just you, nature, and your thoughts,” he says.

Today, the veteran and Purple Heart recipient just feels lucky to be alive.

During the Tet Offensive on January 7, 1968, the marine was stationed at an installation near Red Beach, south of Danang, Vietnam. There was an evening attack with mortars and rockets. A rocket struck near him, and he was hit by shrapnel, but nothing serious, according to Ray.

admitted to Fairfax Hospital for heart surgery. He had a triple bypass and aorta valve replacement. His heart condition was a result of his exposure to Agent Orange during his time in Vietnam. He was in isolation, separated from his wife Linda, for three weeks. “It was the longest we had ever been apart,” he said.

Although doctors recommended less activity following surgery, all he could think about, while still in the hospital, was everything he wanted to do with his repaired heart and new valve. Ray was determined to regain his health and his strength.

He was bandaged up and sent to a Vietnamese language school in Okinawa, Japan, for three weeks. When school was over, his wound was healed. “There were a lot of men much worse off than me. The Good Lord was watching over me” he said.

When his year of in-country service ended, he was stationed at the Marine Corps headquarters near the Pentagon. “During my lunch break, I would run across Memorial Bridge, around the Tidal Basin, to the Capitol and back,” he said.

In April 2020, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ray was

Today, Ray continues his comeback and has participated in almost all of the Hero’s Bridge Vietnam Veteran 5Ks. “I make sure to get a check-up with my cardiologist before training,” he said. Ray is proud to represent Vietnam Veterans during the Hero’s Bridge 5K.

When asked what drives him, he simply answers, “Because I am still able to do it, and I enjoy doing it.”

Ray invites others to #RunwithRay on March 29.

Cooking Quick Tip: Better Browned Ground Beef

f you’re looking for a nice browning on your ground beef, add a pinch or so of baking soda into the mixture. It will help stop the proteins from bonding, which is what causes so much moisture to escape during cooking. Additionally, be careful not to overcrowd the pan with too much ground meat. This allows the steam to escape during cooking and will help the browning process.
