Momentum

Northbrook Senior Center Newsletter

Dear Northbrook Senior Center Members,

As we turn the page on another year, we are reminded of the joys we have shared and the challenges we have overcome together. Let us move ahead with renewed energy and hope. Cheers to health, happiness and heartwarming moments in 2025.

As we look forward to a fresh start in 2025, we also reflect on some highlights of 2024.

Senior Center Volunteer, Mady Fern, was honored at the Illinois Association of Park Districts Best of the Best Gala for her outstanding achievements as a volunteer. See page 6 for more about the Gala.

In 2024, we had 12 games of bingo with lots of fun and giveaways. Barry Bradford delighted us with his knowledge on many fun topics. We traveled to Chicago for an architectural boat tour, and a trip to Chinatown and enjoyed Denny Diamond at White Fence Farms and a lovely Holiday Luncheon at Sunset Ridge Country Club. Our Drop-in programs, especially Duplicate Bridge and Current Events, saw an increase in participation. We participated in a Food Drive that brought many needed supplies to the Northfield Township Food Pantry and hosted an Open House which drew in almost 100 visitors.

As we move into the cold Chicago weather, remember to move more to increase mobility, eat nutrient rich meals and stay hydrated!

Make an effort to turn off the radio and share some good news with a friend or family. Embrace the little things that bring joy to you in this New Year; call a family member that you have not spoken to in a while, take a meal to someone who is unable to go out or adopt a pet from a shelter.

Do what makes you happy and fulfilled in 2025, and please, stop by the Leisure Center Senior office to say hello and share some of your good news with us.

In the next Momentum, there will be a “Good News Corner” where we will share good news from our members. Have a new grandchild? Hit a milestone birthday? Share the good news with all of us!

Thank you and have a wonderful 2025,

Nancy Eschker

“It will be the best thing you’ve ever done”

Open House in November showcased all the great things offered by the Senior Center

While picking up her grandson from a birthday party at Heritage Oaks Golf Club, Diana Maschoff saw a flier advertising the Senior Center Open House on November 8.

“I thought, ‘This looks like fun!’” Maschoff said about checking out the Senior Center.

Six days later, the Northbrook resident roamed the halls of the Leisure Center during the Open House, excited to learn about the classes and programs available to seniors. “I am planning to check out one of the exercise classes, and the watercolor class looks good,” she said. “I am looking forward to it!”

Eliciting such response is exactly why the Senior Center enjoys organizing the Open House each fall, Recreation Manager Nancy Eschker said.

“We love opening the doors of the Senior Center to welcome the community to our annual Open House,” she said. “Our staff enjoys interacting with current and future members, showcasing all that we offer, and helping connect the community with vendors and service providers.”

The event’s presenting sponsor was The Lodge of Northbrook, an independent senior living community that offers lots of opportunities to stay engaged and socialize, said its Marketing Director Linda Yost.

“We have an active senior community,” Yost said. “We start every morning with complimentary breakfast, so you can have a cup of coffee with your neighbors and make new friends. Throughout the day, there are presentations and entertainment, card games, book clubs, walking clubs — all kinds of fun stuff.”

This was the first Open House for refreshment sponsor Diane Barr of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago, who has more than 40 years of experience as a Realtor. “I love answering questions from anyone who has questions about real estate, and I enjoy helping anyone with their needs,” she said.

Representatives of the Northbrook Police Department and the Northbrook Fire Department were all smiles as they shared a table at the Open House.

“We want to let seniors know that there are so many resources out there, and that they have a great community of support for any of the needs they might have,” said Police Community Engagement Officer Amanda Jaegers.

For example, the Police Counseling Services Unit is available to assist victims of crime with shortterm counseling, as well as court advocacy for

Senior Center News, Cont.

victims of elder abuse and other crimes. Residents can enroll in the House Watch Program if they are away from home for four days or more, as well as the Premise Alert Program, so emergency responders are aware of anyone with special needs who might require immediate attention during calls for service.

The Open House also featured tables staffed by Senior Center members, teachers and Park District staff who shared information and answered questions about the myriad offerings at the Senior Center. That included Drop-in programs like knitting and crocheting, classes such as canasta, and low-impact fitness such as chair yoga and walk and tone.

“It is a fun game,” canasta teacher Terri Argentar said. “It’s a hard game to learn, but once you learn it, it holds your interest. Men and women are learning it, and for seniors especially, it’s something to keep your mind going and give you something to really work at.”

Pickleball players set up a demonstration session in the gym to entice visitors to try the sport. “I started as a total beginner knowing nothing, and everyone welcomed me and helped me,” said player Martha Rubel, a Glenview resident. “It’s a wonderful experience. I highly recommend it. Whatever your level is, we help you. And the camaraderie and the friendship are great.”

The Open House also was attended by more than a dozen gold-level sponsors, such as Whitehall

of Deerfield, a skilled nursing facility and rehab center for short-term rehab and long-term care.

“I love the Senior Center,” said Ashley Delaney, Whitehall’s director of community relations. “I love coming here because I get to meet such fun and great people. Every Senior Center director I have worked with has been better than the last.”

Another gold-level sponsor was Northbrook Bank & Trust. Relationship banker Alina Vasilache said the bank is proud to offer customers one-on-one services and direct response to phone calls. “We don’t have a 1-800 number, and that is important for a lot of seniors,” she said. “When they need us, they can speak with a person, directly.”

The other gold sponsors were Amada Senior Care; Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago – Steve Hara and Ellen Atlas – SRES; Bright Star Care North Suburban; CJE SeniorLife; ComForCare Home Care; Comfort Keepers; Home Instead; Jeremy Lew and Associates, Inc.; North Shore Compassionate Care; Pain Relief Institute; and State Representative Tracy Katz Muhl.

Getting involved with the Senior Center “is a giant lifesaver,” said member Angela Dittmar, who happily shared her experience during the Open House. Dittmar said she first started with knitting and crocheting, and now loves the humanities and current events programs.

“When people have an upset or a disappointment, the first fallback is to isolate and wear black… But there are congenial people here, and it will be the best thing you’ve ever done.”

Senior Center volunteer receives IAPD award

Mady Fern has spent thousands of hours volunteering in myriad ways at the Senior Center, where everyone, from custodians to administrators, knows her name and loves being greeted by her beaming smile.

In recognition of her fantastic contributions over the years, Mady was named Outstanding Citizen Volunteer of the Year by the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD).

Mady and other award recipients were feted at the IAPD Best of the Best Awards Gala held in October at the Wheeling Park District’s Chevy Chase Country Club.

Dedicated service

Two Northbrook Park District board members were recognized for their longstanding service: Mary Ann Chambers for 25 years of service and Michael Schyman for 15 years of service.

Environmental stewardship

The Northbrook Park District earned an IAPD Best Green Practices award for its commitment to outstanding environmental practices and community engagement.

The Park District operates and maintains 543 acres of property, including 385 acres of Auduboncertified land. Additionally, two acres of green space are converted to native plantings annually.

Community engagement has included a Farewell Mighty Oak event to honor a 250-year bur oak tree that had reached the end of its life.

Innovative monitoring systems allow staff to remotely adjust irrigation systems, field lighting and HVAC output, resulting in reduced consumption of resources.

Techny Prairie Activity Center continues to maintain net-zero energy status, and a fully electric vehicle recently joined the Park District’s fleet.

Outstanding citizen

Mady has served on the Senior Advisory Committee since its inception in 2019, acting as a strong voice for the membership and as an advocate for fostering essential social connections and accessible health and wellness opportunities.

As a board member for Northbrook School District 28, Mady was instrumental in the development of the 2011 Greenbriar Gym Intergovernmental Agreement between the School District and the Park District. The agreement resulted in important shared recreation space for the park district when school is not in session and the preservation of taxpayer dollars.

Mady also serves on the board of the Northbrook Farmers Market, where she volunteers weekly.

In her remarks at the IAPD Gala, Mady said she was brought up to give back to others.

“I know every single person in this room gives back with their heart and their soul and their love and their time and their kindness. And isn’t it what it’s all about — to give to each other?”

And in what likely was the most rousing finale in IAPD Gala history, Mady earned a standing ovation for her cheerful rendering of the chorus of “So long, farewell.”
