It is hard to believe that summer is almost over. As we embark on our upcoming program offerings, we are pleased to let you know that most of our classes will be held at the Techny Prairie Activity Center (TPAC) due to the exciting renovation at the Leisure Center. Bingo, Canasta, Bridge, Duplicate Bridge, Bunco, Farkle, Humanities, Social Hour and Movie Day will be held at TPAC. Crafting, Knitting, Mixed Poker, Chess, Art Studio and Cribbage will be held at the Village Green Center. We have also added Choir at Village Green Center to the schedule. All levels are welcome. Please see page 3 for the full line up and for more information about our temporary locations during construction.
We are excited to share new programs and events with you this season. We hope you will join us for new trips to Lake Geneva, Chicago River and Lake Urban Adventure Cruise, or at our upcoming Barry Bradford, Bingo and luncheon events. Our popular Ice Cream Social with Maureen Christine is not to be missed! Sign up for our End of Summer Picnic which will be held at Village Green Park by the gazebo. We will have a cookout and some entertainment for your enjoyment.
We would also like to thank all of you who stop by at the Senior Center to chat and let us know how you are doing. In addition, if there is ever anything that
needs attention, please let us know. We want your experience here to be nothing but exceptional.
It is also not too late to join our Wednesday Walking Club where we venture out to local parks and forest preserves. Some Wednesdays we even stop by the Farmer’s Market, so bring a bag or tote to gather up some delicious and nutritious offerings from local farmers.
We hope that you are as excited as we are for our upcoming Autumn offerings and we look forward to seeing you often.
Thank you for your patience during the Leisure Center renovation!

“More welcoming, functional and inclusive”
Leisure Center renovation will feature lots of exciting upgrades
Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator
The 40,000-square-foot Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Ave. in Northbrook, serves as the headquarters for the park district’s recreation programs for children and adults, hosting Sunshine Preschool, the Senior Center and the Northbrook Theatre.
Dating back to the 1960s, the building used to hold the former Indian Ridge School and was acquired by the park district in the 1980s. The facility needs to be renovated and upgraded to extend its lifespan and boost the park district’s ability to meet the needs of the community.
“This renovation represents a significant investment in the future of our community,” said Northbrook Park District Executive Director Chris Leiner. “We’re grateful for our board of commissioners’ continued support and shared
commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Northbrook. These upgrades will allow us to better serve residents of all ages with spaces that are more welcoming, functional and inclusive. It’s about honoring the legacy of this facility while preparing it to meet the evolving needs of generations to come.”
The cost of the project is currently estimated at about $12.1 million, and will be partially funded by a $2.8 million grant from the Park and Recreational Facility Construction Act program administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
The project will feature functional upgrades catering to all users and elevating the interior of the building with a more open and inviting feel. There will be an improved and welcoming main entrance, an enhanced lobby with a new reception area and expanded hallway spaces.
The building will feature all new exterior windows and façade improvements, and classrooms will have ambient lighting and new viewing windows for a brighter, more communal atmosphere.

Senior Center News, Cont.
New features will include a social lounge, additional art spaces and a technology and training room.
There will be upgrades to the classrooms, demonstration kitchen and multipurpose rooms, including the addition of a fireplace.
The bathrooms will be renovated, and technology will be added throughout the building to augment meetings, presentations and special events.
The Northbrook Theatre will have a designated entrance with a new direct outdoor walkway, along with upgrades to the smaller theatre space as well as the lower-level green room, dressing rooms and costume area.
Safety enhancements will include a designated access point for the early childhood area and improved wayfinding signage.
The work also will upgrade the building to current ADA standards, including accessible bathrooms in the early childhood classrooms.
“For decades, the Leisure Center has provided Northbrook with a communal gathering space where children, families, adults and seniors can nurture their interests, explore new hobbies and make new friends,” Northbrook Park District Director of Recreation Eileen Loftus said. “We are thrilled to embark on this renovation project, which will allow us to offer an even more vibrant and welcoming recreational space for our community.”
During construction, all programs that typically take place at the Leisure Center will be relocated to other park district facilities, plus a few additional locations in the community. All park district staff that currently work at the Leisure Center will also relocate and continue running their respective programs.
“Our patrons will continue to interact with all the familiar faces they see at the Leisure Center,” Loftus said. “We know that many in our community have developed a sense of comfort and trust with our staff members, and they can rest assured
that will not be disrupted during the construction project.”
Sunshine Preschool will be held at the Sports Center. The preschool’s furniture and materials will be moved to the new temporary location to ensure a familiar and welcoming environment for children and families.
Adult and senior programs, including drop-in programming, events and wellness, will be held at other Northbrook Park District facilities, including Village Green Center and Techny Prairie Activity Center.
As the start of construction approaches, additional information regarding these impactful plans for this facility will be shared at nbparks.org/projects

Seniors enjoy a special day at Techny Prairie Activity Center
Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator
This year’s celebration of National Senior Health & Fitness Day at Techny Prairie Activity Center was a great success, with 215 seniors participating in free fitness activities and many more visiting the facility and meeting staff and vendors.
“That was the highest turnout we’ve had in the past four years,” TPAC Member Services Supervisor Kristina Jeluso said. “It was a fantastic celebration of wellness, connection and vitality. It was inspiring to see so many seniors embracing an active lifestyle and discovering new ways to prioritize their health.”
Seniors sampled low-impact classes such as Qigong, Chair Zumba and W.O.W (Wonderful Overall Workout), along with open pickleball at the facility’s gym. Health experts and sponsors offered information on wellness topics and free services such as cryotherapy and leg compression therapy.
Home Instead was the event’s presenting sponsor. The gold-level sponsors were Addolorata Villa, Brookdale Senior Living Northbrook, CJE Senior Life, ComForCare Homecare, Comfort Keepers, Freedom Home Care & Medical Staffing, Northbrook Police Department, RTA, State Sen. Julie Morrison, USA Vein Clinics and Whitehall of Deerfield. Restore Hyper Wellness donated the free therapy services and Lifeway Kefir donated kefir as a healthy snack.
Senior Center member Lenore Bernstein, who helped staff the park district’s informational booth, said she was glad to see so many fellow seniors come to the event despite the rainy weather.
“I was happy to see the turnout that we got,” she said. “There was a nice variety of vendors, and I know people enjoyed that. They also enjoyed sampling some treatments and I know some of
them want to follow up and look into options.”
Both Lenore and her husband enjoy frequenting TPAC. Lenore takes group classes like chair yoga and W.O.W. while her husband works on strength and balance in the spacious fitness area.
“I always encourage seniors to keep moving, and TPAC is a great place,” said Lenore, who also enjoys the Move It & Shake It class at Leisure Center.
Regular exercise can help older adults stay independent and prevent many health problems that come with age, according to the National Council on Aging.
Two types of physical activity are recommended each week to improve health: aerobic exercise and muscle strengthening. Experts recommend that older adults engage in moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes, five days a week; and musclestrengthening activities at least two days a week.
Techny Prairie Activity Center, 180 Anets Drive in Northbrook, offers a wide range of activities designed to support fitness, social engagement and overall well-being.
There are more than 50 group fitness classes for members, open gym programs for pickleball, basketball and volleyball, and a modern fitness center that includes an indoor walking track with scenic views of the surrounding parkland. For more information, visit nbfitness.org or call 847-897-6180.
