Try a New Class or Program at TPAC!
Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator
With many Senior Center programs taking place at Techny Prairie Activity Center during renovations at the Leisure Center (the future Northbrook Community Center!), there is no easier time to try new fitness classes for healthy aging while taking advantage of special membership offers.
Seniors who enroll as new TPAC members by October 15 will receive the first month free (no prorating) and a free TPAC mug. Additionally, there is no enrollment fee for the month of September.
TPAC strives to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for seniors, offering a wide array of classes and programs for members with different interests and fitness levels, Northbrook Park District Fitness Supervisor Julie Lappas said.
Seniors should focus on building and maintaining muscle strength, bone strength and core strength, Julie said. “All of this leads to important things like having a good sense of balance, and making sure that if you fall, you can get back up.”
Julie encouraged seniors to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.
“It can be anything you like — yoga, walking, strength training, biking — it’s most important to find a form of exercise you enjoy.”
Here are some classes and programs perfect for seniors to try at TPAC this fall:
Chair Yoga — A low-impact but effective class that helps with mobility and stretching.
Dance Fit — Features fun, low-impact dance moves that build cardiovascular endurance.
Senior Center News, Cont.
Essentrics — Focuses on functional fitness that addresses the needs of the whole body while being respectful of natural limitations. “This class is very popular,” Julie said. “The instructor is wonderful — she has great positive energy and wants to help people move better and feel better.”
Live Well, Move Strong — Designed for people affected by cancer (including those in treatment and survivors), features gentle movement, functional fitness and breathwork.
Move & Shake It — A mix of dancing and light weights/resistance bands. “Seniors will especially love the music, it’s all from the 1960s through the 1990s,” Julie said.
OsteoFit Fusion — Designed for individuals managing osteoporosis, focuses on enhancing bone health and overall well-being.
Tai Chi — Focuses on gentle movements that improve balance and body awareness.
Qigong — A combination of gentle movements, controlled breathing and meditation.
Pickleball — More low impact than tennis, it’s an accessible sport easy to learn for beginners. People are welcome to come watch, learn the rules and meet players (some in their 80s!) before joining in.
Steady Strength — Low-impact class designed to improve stability, core strength and body awareness.
Walk and Tone — Fitness walks featuring balance and agility drills and light strength activity.
Walking Club — An easy healthy activity where people can also talk to each other and socialize.
W.O.W. (Wonderful Overall Workout) — A lowimpact workout that combines cardio, strength and balance. “It’s really meant for anybody,” Julie said. “We’ve had people who just came back from surgery or postpartum recovery, and people who never worked out before and needed a good starting point.”

Northbrook Community Center was Top Choice
Article by Elena Ferrarin, Communications Coordinator
Closed for renovations since August, the Leisure Center will reopen in spring 2026 as the Northbrook Community Center.
The renaming of the building was approved by the Park District’s Board of Commissioners following community surveys.
An initial survey was distributed to the community to gather input regarding the facility name.
Based on community feedback indicating a preference for a name change, the Park District’s Board of Commissioners approved two names for presentation to the community for voting: Northbrook Community Center and Northbrook Recreation & Arts Center.
The second survey elicited 908 responses. The final vote from the community was 555 votes (61.12%) for Northbrook Community Center, and 353 votes (38.88%) for Northbrook Recreation & Arts Center.
Board President Mike Goodman said he’s excited the board made the commitment to execute this long-needed project.
“This is an important community centered facility
that serves all our residents — from babies to children, adults and seniors — and I am proud of the decision to invest in enhancing the community’s enjoyment of the arts and recreation,” he said.
The project will modernize and enhance the 1960s-era building with functional and aesthetic upgrades to both the interior and exterior. The improvements will allow the park district to boost programming options for patrons of all ages, and provide more functional space for its dedicated staff.
The $12.1 million project led by Bulley & Andrews includes a $2.8 million grant from the Park and Recreational Facility Construction Act program administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
“The redesign, conceptualized by Wight & Company, will transform the building into a warm and inviting community center that will inspire patrons to gather, socialize and engage in activities,” Northbrook Park District Executive Director Chris Leiner said.

1 Marriott Lincolnshire Presents: Catch Me If You Can
Based on the hit film and the incredible true story, Catch Me If You Can is the delightfully entertaining musical comedy about chasing your dreams and not getting caught. Jetset to the 1960s where charming, young con-man Frank Abagnale Jr. posed as an airline pilot, a lawyer and a doctor — and then escaped police custody, all before he turned 22. When Frank’s lies catch the attention of an FBI agent, he is pursued across the globe to pay for his crimes. Created by a Tony Award-winning dream team: book by Terrence McNally (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and a swinging score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Some Like it Hot).
