Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Northbrook Park District residents,
As 2025 comes to a close, I want to express my gratitude for your enduring support for the Park District
You consistently show up to participate in our classes and programs, respond to community surveys and attend special events, always reminding us that our hard work makes an impact and that our efforts truly matter to this community .
For example, we had an incredible Autumnfest in early October, when we experienced so much warmth — literally and figuratively — and record attendance for an awesome family day of pumpkins, hayrides, petting zoo and general fall fun
A new and exciting opportunity this fall was partnering with the Wheeling Park District and State Senator Julie Morrison, with the cooperation of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, to present the first Fall Fishing Fest, a fishing derby held at Wood Oaks Green Park This was a perfect example of how effective collaboration among local and state entities can provide meaningful recreational experiences for our communities
I also would like to thank our local business sponsors for their invaluable financial support and enhancements for events like Tuesdays in the Park, Liberty Loop & Lap, Touch a Truck, Halloween Pet Parade and many more Next time you see their table at one of our events, please stop by and show them your appreciation!
Looking ahead to this winter and spring, I invite you to look through this guide and learn all about the hundreds of classes and programs we offer for people of all ages, from health and fitness to visual and performing arts — and so much more . Don’t miss out on your favorite recreational opportunities: registration opens November 18 for residents and November 25 for non-residents
We are also proud to offer Northbrook Theatre, comprising three theater companies whose performances sold more than 10,700 tickets this past year . “A Christmas Chaos” presented by Northbrook Community Theatre will be our final performance for 2025, so make sure to check it out
Our upcoming special events include Light up the Night, the annual family dance where fathers, mothers and all caregivers are invited to come boogie with their children This year, we are excited to change the venue to the Renaissance Chicago Hotel in Northbrook to give you a beautiful evening of lasting memories
While you fill your winter and spring calendars with Park District activities, it’s also never too early to register your children for all the different types of camps we offer this summer, including arts, sports, theater, ice skating and many more
On January 11, we will host an Open House for the 2026–27 school year of our popular Sunshine Preschool, which offers enriching early childhood education for ages 3 to 5 Preschool online registration opens January 12 .
Sunshine Preschool will be held in newly refreshed classrooms at Northbrook Community Center, the former Leisure Center currently undergoing an exciting renovation project (visit nbparks.org/projects for updates)
On behalf of the entire Park District staff, we look forward to continuing to serve you in 2026 with amazing opportunities to enjoy parks and recreation .
Wishing you a healthy and happy start to the New Year,
Chris Leiner, Executive Director
IMPROVING COMMUNITY SPACES
Top name choice
With ongoing renovations proceeding on track, the Leisure Center is scheduled to reopen in spring 2026 as the Northbrook Community Center
The renaming of the building was approved by the Park District’s Board of Commissioners following community surveys
An initial community survey indicated a preference for a facility name change, with respondents giving input about preferred new names . Based on that input, the Board approved two names for presentation to the community in a second survey: Northbrook Community Center and Northbrook Recreation & Arts Center
The second community survey elicited 908 responses The final tally was 555 votes (61 12%) for Northbrook Community Center, and 353 votes (38 .88%) for Northbrook Recreation & Arts Center
The $12 .1 million facility renovation will modernize and enhance the 1960s-era building with functional and aesthetic upgrades to both the interior and exterior The improvements will allow the Park District to boost programming options for patrons of all ages, and provide more functional space for its dedicated staff
The project includes a $2 .8 million grant from the Park and Recreational Facility Construction Act program administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources
Asset stewardship
While large projects like this summer’s renovation of Meadowhill Aquatic Center and the current work at Northbrook Community Center grab the most headlines, a slew of smaller but equally essential projects comprise the bulk of the Park District’s yearly Capital Improvement Plan
A sampling of projects completed in 2025:
• The purchase of a Pik’r golf range picking robot to address the surge in range ball sales from 1 million to nearly 3 million annually since the renovation of Heritage Oaks Golf Club The robot helps manage demand more
efficiently, improving customer experience and freeing up staff time for other tasks
• The replacement of two basketball goals at Greenbriar Gymnasium that were originally purchased 10 years ago and whose base coverings had deteriorated
• Irrigation control upgrades at Wescott Park, Meadowhill Aquatic Center, Sports Center Pool and Stonegate Park, which enable staff to monitor equipment remotely and adjust irrigation schedules based on weather conditions, all with the goal of improving efficiency and water management
• Repairs to a variety of pool features, such as the replacement of panels of the Sports Center Pool climbing wall
• Removal of the asphalt path, patio structure, pole, drinking fountain and benches at 1710 Pfingsten Road, an underutilized parcel owned by the Park District that was successfully restored to turf
• Replacement of the wood planks for the bridges at Techny Prairie Park and Fields and Wood Oaks Green Park, which dated back to the 1990s and had reached the end of their lifespan .
• Redesign of the Village Green Park Fountain valve pit to mitigate risk for staff and create a more efficient maintenance process .
• The purchase of an additional equipment lift for the golf maintenance facility at Heritage Oaks Golf Club, allowing for more efficient fleet maintenance and the ability to provide repairs and service to multiple pieces of equipment at the same time .
Such projects are a vital component of the Park District’s mission to enhance our community by providing outstanding services, parks and facilities through environmental, social and financial stewardship

NORTHBROOK PARK DISTRICT
NEWSWORTHY NOTES
Congrats, Coach!
Northbrook resident Ryan Dolin earned the Park District’s 2025 Coach of the Year award thanks to his amazing commitment, effective and innovative coaching methods and infectious energy
Dolin has volunteered as a coach for the Park District for six years, always coaching teams for his young sons (currently basketball, football and soccer)
A native of Buffalo Grove, Dolin graduated from Stevenson High School and Purdue University in Indiana, where he studied industrial engineering He works as an engineer for a pharmaceutical company .
Growing up, Dolin played baseball, basketball and football . His father had been a standout athlete at Glenbrook North High School (where he still holds the shotput record from 1979) and the entire family shared a love for sports
Awesome Donation
The Park District’s vehicle fleet welcomed two unusual additions: a bright red Ford Model T replica with a calliope musical instrument, and an attachable (and equally bright red) antique-style popcorn wagon
Their former owner, Ron Bernardi, previously drove them to a multitude of events, parades, block parties and fundraisers for nearly 20 years
Bernardi decided it was time to cede the wheel and generously donated both vehicles to the Park District
The vehicles were built at Bernardi’s request in 2005–2006 by the Miner Company in Missouri
The vehicle has a Chevrolet engine with automatic transmission and an air pressure generator that powers the calliope
The calliope is an organ-like wind instrument that can be played three ways: manually, with an electronic Midi player or using an old-fashioned music roll It made its Park District debut during the 4th of July Parade, when it was driven by Park District mechanic, and Northbrook resident, John U Hoffman
Gifting the vehicles to the Park District will ensure their use will retain a strong community spirit, Bernardi said
“The calliope brings a smile to people, and the popcorn wagon brings a smile to people,” he said “It’s like a mascot in the community, and I thought, ‘It really belongs to the community ’”
Fishing Fun
The first Fall Fishing Fest was a resounding success, with hundreds of area residents taking part in the event held on a sunny Sunday morning in October
The free fishing derby was the result of a partnership between the Northbrook Park District, the Wheeling Park District and State Senator Julie Morrison, in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources .
Families had a chance to cast a line, take fishing lessons and play lawn games while enjoying coffee and donuts available for purchase . The Park District provided fishing poles and bait on a first-come, first-served basis
Northbrook Historical Society, Northbrook Sustainability and Northwest Mosquito Abatement District were also in attendance to share educational resources with attendees
The event was about bringing people together, creating shared memories and building stronger community connections through an enjoyable and educational outdoor experience
THANK YOU EVENT PARTNERS!
Northbrook Park District partners with a variety of local organizations and businesses throughout the year. We are thankful for the support of our Summer and Autumn sponsors.
