Hello Senior Center Members!

It is great to see smiling faces again! Masks are welcome but not required. While everyone’s situation is different, should you wish to wear a mask, please feel free to do so. I know the pandemic has impacted and changed the lives of so many, and you have been resilient through it all. The positive news is that the number of variant cases is on the decline. However, since we know that COVID-19 is not over I want to reassure you that the Northbrook Park District will continue to follow the guidance of national, state, and local authorities. The most current information regarding the District’s COVID-19 procedures is posted at nbparks.org.

I am sure you are also anxious to return to many things you have missed, and I hope the Senior Center is a part of that. In the spirit of carpe diem, I hope you will seize the opportunity to explore our offerings. Northbrook is a beautiful place to live, and the Northbrook Senior Center is a fantastic place to meet new friends, participate in things you enjoy and try something new. I am excited to share a sampling of programs I know you will enjoy. For example, our Summer Luncheon with the Edizon Dayao Show; Barbara Rinella Presents The Chanel Sisters; We Got Your Back: Relief, Healing & Prevention; Ice Cream Bingo; and Meet the Author: Myron Glassenberg, M.D. just to name a few. As a reminder, please do not wait until the last minute to register for programs. If we are unable to meet the minimum for a program one week prior to its scheduled date the program will be cancelled.

I also want to share with you that it has been a challenge to schedule trips due to decreased availability of drivers, and higher gas prices that have impacted the cost of motor coach transportation. Based on member feedback, I will work to schedule local trips within a comfortable driving distance rather than trips that are out-ofstate. Members can then take advantage of our group rates, drive themselves or carpool, and sit with fellow Senior Center members.

Trips to venues in the Chicago area will also be gentler on the wallet.

Since this is an area that is a work in progress, be patient and know that I am open to hearing your ideas and candid feedback. Some trips may be "Pop Up" trips and will not appear in Momentum or the Summer Guide. Please feel free to call me at 847-291-2995 to inquire about “Pop Up” trips, to chat or to share ideas and comments.

DINE & GAB (formerly Culinary Connections)

Myron Glassenberg, M.D., a Northbrook resident for over thirty-six years, recently published his first anthology of short stories, written in his retirement, after practicing as a neurologist for fifty years. His book, On the Teeter Totter Highs and Lows: Short Stories, describes stories of medical and scientific cases with a humorous and satiric perspective.

Lee Saldinger, Volunteer Coordinator On the second Friday of each month at noon meet for lunch at a local restaurant. If you enjoy exploring a variety of foods, good company, conversation and meeting new people then we invite you to join us. Individuals are responsible for the cost of their meals and their own transportation. The group plans to lunch at Max & Benny’s on June 10, at Grill House on July 8, and Poached Egg on August 12. Restaurant locations are subject to change. For more information, to offer restaurant suggestions, confirm restaurant locations and to be added to the contact list, call 847-291-2995. Lee Saldinger, our volunteer coordinator, will contact members on the list to provide details and answer questions.

Dr. Glassenberg earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Northwestern University and graduated medical school from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He did his residency at Northwestern University Hospitals and started his private practice in the Chicago area. Subsequently, he was appointed clinical lecturer at the University of Illinois and later, clinical assistant professor of neurology.

Dr. Glassenberg is board certified in neurology and other sub-specialties of electrodiagnostic medicine, and electro encephalopathy. He served as head of the neurology divisions at Hinsdale and Swedish Covenant Hospitals. He also was head of the stroke program at Swedish Covenant until his retirement and he is now an Emeritus physician.

Dr. Glassenberg draws on his previous religious and philosophical education, begun in childhood, enabling him to add metaphysical perspectives to his stories. His newfound writing began with his involvement in Northbrook Senior Center’s Humanities group led by Bill Schwartz. The Humanities group discusses and interprets short stories on a weekly basis.

I invite you and your friends to Meet the Author: Myron Glassenberg, M.D. on Thursday, June 2, 1:00-2:30pm. He’ll share a few excerpts from his book and chat with you. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet one of Northbrook’s very own!

DROP-IN AT THE SENIOR CENTER LIBRARY The summer months bring a frenzy of activity to the Leisure Center! We will continue to offer the library as a drop-in space, however we may need to host programs in the library as well. A schedule will be posted outside the library weekly.

DROP-IN PICKLEBALL UPDATE

Members were happy to hear music fill the room with 50s and 60s tunes performed by the Saddle Shoe Sisters during the Valentine’s Day luncheon.

Members are reaping the health benefits and enjoying the social aspects of pickleball. Newbies that come to drop-in pickleball are learning how to play from fellow members, and a group of a dozen members now consistently plays on Tuesdays, from 8:30am-10:30am and Thursdays, from 8am-10am.

NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP FOOD PANTRY DONATION DRIVE The Northbrook Senior Center, in partnership with Whitehall of Deerfield, is contributing to the nutrition assistance efforts of Northfield Township Food Pantry with collecting non-perishable donations that can make an immediate difference to those experiencing food insecurity. We will be hosting a Food Pantry Drive-By Drop Off on Friday, June 10, from 11am-1pm in the Leisure Center Parking Lot. Some items on their “Most Wanted” list are: • • • •

TAI CHI & MEDITATION We successfully kicked off our 16-week Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention class with over thirty people registered. Feedback from members of this class resulted in our offering a new fourweek Mindful Meditation class. We will explore continuing the class if there is enough interest.

FUN WITH CREATIVE ARTS Members created beautiful tabletop and hanging terrariums in our spring class. Other members saw how beautiful they were and asked us to offer the class again. See page 6 for details on the next Terrarium Building class.

Events & Activities Bingocize® Northbrook Senior Center has partnered with White Crane Wellness Center to bring this offering to you. Bingocize® is an evidence-based health promotion program approved through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education and The National Council on Aging (NCOA). Bingocize® combines exercise (range of motion, strengthening, cardiovascular) and health information with the familiar game of Bingo, which has shown to be a great, fun way to get moving and socializing. Everyone is provided with a unique bingo card and a chance to win a prize at the end of each session. The overall goals of the program are to help seniors improve and/or maintain mobility and independence while also learning to use health information focused on fall reduction, improved nutrition, and other health-related behaviors. Preference will be given to members who have not previously taken a class sponsored

Walking Programs INDOOR WALKING AT TPAC - FREE FOR SENIOR CENTER MEMBERS MONDAYS, 11AM-1PM If you’re a Senior Center member, come enjoy the benefits of walking on the indoor track at Techny Prairie Activity Center (TPAC) where you can walk in the comfort of a temperature-controlled environment. This limited time offer has now been extended through December 2022!

OUTDOOR WALKING PROGRAMS - Classes Start June 6 - see page 14 Once the weather warms up you can look forward to Active Aging Walkfit offered to TPAC members. This program is led by a group fitness instructor and will not be your typical walking club. I am a member of the Senior Center. Does my Senior Center membership include use of TPAC? No. TPAC membership is separate from the Senior Center membership. Members of the Senior Center need to be a TPAC member or pay a daily fee to attend group fitness classes, open gyms or use the fitness floor or track at TPAC. Do I need a membership to attend group fitness classes at TPAC? There are two options. The first is to have a full membership which includes access to regular group fitness classes, use of the track, participation in all open gyms and use of the fitness floor. The other option is to pay the daily fee. Daily admission includes group fitness classes, use of the track, use of the fitness floor, and open gym participation on that day. Daily admission is being offered at a rate

of $18 for Northbrook Park District residents and $23 for non-residents.

Will group fitness classes be returning to the Leisure Center?

In 2022, a limited number of health and wellness programs will be added at the Leisure Center. The programs will be planned for older adults and will not be the same as group fitness classes at Techny Prairie Activity Center. Prior to the opening of TPAC, the fitness classes at the Leisure Center were offered to everyone but were often viewed as Senior Center classes based on the participants who chose to register. New and developing in 2022 are health and wellness programs targeted for Senior Center participants that will be held at the Leisure Center. Classes currently held at TPAC such as W.O.W., Chair Yoga and Zumba Gold, will not be duplicated at the Leisure Center.
