AT THE HELM

TREASURER’S MESSAGE Dear fellow members, The full operation of the newly completed additional accommodation wing at our Marina Lodge began with Financial Year 2014. I would like to start this feature on how this project and the new Dry Stack which was operational since mid-2012 had contributed to our cash flow, based on the unaudited FY 2014 financial results. Detailed financial report will be included in our 2014 Annual Report in due course. The Marina Lodge posted a 53 per cent increase in revenue to $2.4 million, largely from the additional new guestrooms, as compared to FY 2013. The operating expenses increased by 12.27 per cent to $954,000. The net surplus of $1.45 million would imply that payback would take about 3.5 years on the room construction costs of $4.84 million. The average occupancy rate was below expectation at 66.66 per cent. The imminent opening of the new 550room Genting Hotel Jurong in Q2 2015, is likely to pose strong challenges to fill our rooms. We shall endeavour to step up our on-going sales and marketing efforts. Meanwhile, we have recently equipped all guest rooms and function areas with complimentary WiFi to enhance room occupancy. Feasibility studies are underway to refurbish the rooms in the old wing. Our House SubCommittee is embarking on an incentive programme for our members to refer room sales. As for the Marina, its operating revenue posted an increase of 12.25 per cent to $2.66 million, as compared to FY 2013. However, the corresponding expenditure increased more significantly by 35 per cent to $1.64 million. This was mainly due to the higher than expected expenses in the pontoon and fork lift maintenance and repair costs. The net operating surplus was 11 per cent lower at $1.02 million. The average occupancy rate seems to stabilise at 75 per cent, and sales and marketing efforts will be stepped up to fill the empty slots. We continued to keep a watchful eye over our finances on the F&B department, while at the same we are mindful to offer quality dishes at reasonable prices. The unaudited F&B

operating revenue at $2.783 million was almost flat, in comparison to last year. However, the net operating deficit was reduced by 47.7 per cent to -$68,641. As we are entering the new work year, our House Sub-Committee is prioritizing to reduce the deficit further without compromising the quality of our food and service offerings. The tenancy agreement for the outsourcing of the Bridge Restaurant and Beacon Bar has finally concluded. The new operator, iConcept F&B Asia Pte Ltd, will commence its renovation works in mid-March and aim to commence business by end of May. We look forward to the opening of the bistro-style restaurant to enjoy good valued gourmet food that will be created by its award-winning chef. Our present clubhouse and marina have been operating for the last 15 years since we moved from the old site in 1999 and inevitably the amenities and facilities are subject to wear and tear due to ageing. For example, the tired wooden wall panels of the Nautica Rooms were recently upgraded to sustain its premium stature. Works are also now underway to rectify the faulty bollard lightings on the pontoons. Another case in point was the intermittent power trips last November. It took the maintenance team some time to investigate, before the fault was finally traced to one of the two main incoming circuit breakers. We understand the exasperation of members affected by the intermittent power trips. Please be assured that all members of the RSYC Committee were concerned about the inconvenience caused and were doing their utmost best to resume normal operation soonest possible. We welcome constructive feedback on all areas that need improvement and encourage all members to keep their views and suggestions coming as we move our Club forward. The recently held Boaters’ Dialogue Session initiated by the boating

members is a commendable feedback channel. It will help management to address the concerns and issues faced directly by members. Similar sessions would be conducted regularly. We thank members for their valuable feedback and comments through the year, which are critical in helping the Committee to ensure that members’ comfort and satisfaction will be maintained at the highest level. We are still facing manpower challenges in recruiting, retaining and training the right talents. Perhaps, it is not easy to tend a Club where members are all bosses, and you have to take care of all members at all times. Our General Manager, Trevor De Silva, has served his notice of resignation on his own accord and we wish him well in his future endeavour. We have engaged the expertise of headhunters in our search for a GM and we are now in the midst of the selection process. Last but not least, I would like to thank members for giving me this privilege to serve RSYC. I look forward to seeing you, your family members and friends at the Club. HERITAGE

SIR THOMAS LIPTON’S GIFT TO THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB This article about RSYC’s most-prized trophy was originally featured on page 15 of the January/February 2001 issue of the RSYC magazine. We are sharing it here as a reminder of our rich heritage and legacy.

I

n 1923, the RSYC gained its most precious treasure when Sir Thomas Lipton gave the Club the Lipton Challenge Cup, a magnificent silver trophy. Today, the Lipton Cup is given pride of place in the RSYC trophy cabinet, in a special compartment in the centre of the display (see note below). Sir Thomas Lipton (1850 to 1931) was born in Glasgow, Scotland, although his parents were from Ulster, in Northern Ireland. Early in life, he made a fortune in the grocery business and developed his famous Lipton Tea. He put his fortune to good use by supporting charities, and was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1898. Sir Thomas Lipton became an international celebrity, and a friend of Queen Victoria’s son, King Edward VII. Besides being a tea merchant and a philanthropist, Sir Thomas Lipton was also an avid yachtsman. He joined the prestigious Royal Ulster Yacht Club and entered several yachts – each named Shamrock – in the America’s Cup races. Although his yachts never won the America’s Cup, he earned a reputation as a great sportsman – proof, perhaps, that what makes a sportsman truly great is his ability to lose gracefully. He donated trophies to yacht clubs in various countries, including those in the United States and New Zealand. Sir Thomas Lipton donated the Lipton Challenge Cup to the RSYC sometime in 1923. This cup is briefly mentioned in the RSYC Minutes of 10 April 1923:

“A letter was read from Sir Thomas Lipton to Mr. Blake offering a cup to the Club and Mr. Knowles and Mr. Carver were asked to draft a suitable reply.” The Cup must have arrived at some point during 1923, because the Minutes of 8 April 1924 stated:

“A letter was read from Sir Thomas Lipton to Mr. W.M. Blake thanking him for an account of the races in which the ‘Polly’ won the Lipton Challenge Cup in 1923.” The Polly belonged to W.M. Blake.

A GREAT CLOSING CEREMONY FOR THE 21ST SINGAPORE STRAITS REGATTA AFTER GLASGOW KISS TEAM SEALED THE CHAMPIONSHIP CROWN The Singapore Straits Regatta carries an impressive history, stretching back to 1994. Local enthusiasts, driven by a goal to cement Singapore’s position as a yachting hub and grow the local keelboat scene, created an international event. Twenty one years later and Singapore is very much at the forefront of the sailing world!

final races. The team on Glasgow Kiss from Great Britain, skippered by Nils Razmilovic, mastered the conditions. They racked up another win and a 3rd place to seal the Championship crown. Germany’s Johannes Babandererde and his Werner Team secured the silver, with the British Pocapena Team, skippered by Mike Buchanan, claiming bronze!

Out on the race track and the SB20 fleet had to dig deep, and produce their best teamwork and skill in the 2 remaining 6-leg Upwind Downwind races. Results would determine the Asia Pacific Champion!

Sailing is not a man’s world. Women are always in the mix – and regularly at the front. Women’s teams are more than able to challenge men on the leaderboard and give them a run for their money, and can handle the boat equally skillfully. Women often join the men for mixed racing – adding their talent to the team.

The other fleets, returned to Singaporean waters after great racing on the other side of the straits, in Indonesia. Singapore’s Foxy Lady VI secured victory, and Australia’s Fujin team skippered by Mike Tilden came in second.

The impressive closing ceremony showered the winners with prizes and applause. All teams enjoyed the warm hospitality, weaved with a typical Singaporean tropical touch. Another year of great racing and great memories. Teams will be back next year.

In the IRC B Class, the overall results were Waka Tere, skippered by Kurt Metzger coming in 1st place, Shoon Fung Too skippered by Gorden Maxted tied at 12 points with Waka Tere but lost on count back to settle for 2nd place. Shengli and Quarterback, the two teams representing Singapore Management University, came in 3rd and 4th respectively.

Traditional lion dance performers graced the clubhouse on 20 February 2015 to herald the good luck and prosperity that comes with the new Year of the Goat. Members and guests gathered to watch the skilful and acrobatic moves of the agile performers as they made their round throughout the clubhouse to bless the various locations of the premise. BOATERS’ DIALOGUE 23 JANUARY 2015

Boaters at the dialogue session.

The Boaters’ Dialogue session held on 23 January 2015 saw 60 boating members in attendance. Led by the Marina Manager Chan Nai Eng, the session updated boating members of upcoming works and plans for the year ahead. Boating members also took the opportunity to voice their concerns about marina facilities, and emphasized particularly on the safety of the marina users. If you have any feedback or suggestions relating to the marina and its facilities, please do drop an email to info@rsyc.org.sg

MANHOLE COVERS REPLACEMENT WORKS AT DRY STACK AREA The replacement works of the damaged manhole covers at the dry stack area were carried out in two phases. It was identified that the issue on the uneven flooring over the manhole covers resulted in the detrimental effects on both the Wiggins Marina Bull Forklifts, thus raising members concerns about the damages to the boats in the dry stack.

One of the corroded “skirts” of the old covers .

New “skirts” and cover made from heavy duty plastic composite.

It was therefore decided to replace the manhole covers with heavy duty composite material of durable and corrosion resistant properties as well as an appropriate load rating.

Installation of the new “skirts” in progress.

Concrete work in progress.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN FOR THE WET BERTHS The Marine and Security Department have worked on an Emergency Response Plan for the wet berths of the Club. The Emergency Response Plan outlines the Emergency Contact Numbers and the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for various scenarios that could potentially happen at the marina. These include procedures for sinking boats, fire evacuation, oil spills and man overboard. Boaters can request for a copy of the Emergency Response Plan via email to marina@rsyc.org.sg for a download link.

REVISED RATES FOR JET SKI STORAGE In reviewing the jet ski storage fee by the management and the Committee, we would like to inform members that the fee will be revised for the year 2015. Please be informed that the last price revision of the jet ski storage fee was in 2008 and it has been maintained till now. As part of our constant initiative to provide better and efficient service, we are looking into the feasibility of a Vertical Storage & Retrieval Lift System for our jet skis. However in keeping up with the operating costs including the maintenance of towing

tractor, we are compelled to adjust the jet ski monthly berthing rate to $90 per jet ski (subject to GST). Please be assured that with the interest of the Club members in mind, we are keeping the new rate to remain the lowest in comparison with the other marinas in Singapore. The new rate will take effect from 1 March 2015. Please do not hesitate to contact Marina Department at 6768 9234 or email to marina@rsyc.org.sg if you require further information.
