AT THE HELM Dear Fellow Members of RSYC, The battle against the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the global economy and Clubs like ours have not been spared as we have experienced a significant loss in revenue. However, we managed to retain most of our staff during this difficult period and continue to keep the Club serviced, well maintained and kept clean and increased disinfectant efforts during the period of closure. RSYC Committee recognises that this period of closure may be a difficult time for many members. After serious discussions, we have decided to waive F&B Spending Levy for two quarters from April to September 2020 and award $100 F&B credits to all our members. At the time of writing, the Marina Lodge remains closed for staycations until further direction from the Government. However, we have offered all Members a complimentary night stay in our superior room so you could experience our resort style accommodation in comfort once it reopens. We have also received a property tax rebate from the Government in May and decided to pass it on to our Boating Members. Each eligible member will receive a 62% rebate on the May Berthing fee. We are very encouraged to see Members back in the Clubhouse on 19th June 2020 with many going out for their long-awaited boating trips and others coming back to the Club to enjoy the Club facilities – working out at the gym or just simply have a proper sit-down meal at our F&B outlets.

We are pleased to share that more F&B promotions will be launched in July & August. Do look out for our Weekday & Weekend Specials at The Wharf and our special meat cut, Venison Loin available at La Pizzeria. The popular BBQ Weekend Set at The Wharf will also be back but with a twist. In consideration of hygiene, we decided to take away the outdoor BBQ station and move it back to the kitchen. All BBQ items will be done a la minute upon order by our chefs in the kitchen. As we reopen, I would like to remind all Members to continue to practise social responsibility. The key highlights to bear in mind are as follows: • Follow all safe distancing measures and guidelines put in place by the Club. • Gatherings must be kept to a maximum of 5 people at all times. • Maintain a ONE metre safe distance • Face masks must be worn at all times, except when eating or doing strenuous exercises. • Wash/sanitise your hands frequently. • If you feel unwell or display flu-like symptoms, please see a doctor and stay home. On another note, I would like to provide an update on the forthcoming AGM. As per our letter to all Members, AGMs are allowed to be deferred up to 30th September 2020. We will update Members on the actual date of the AGM. Meanwhile, the current term of Committee Members are still continuing their duty and assisting members wherever possible. We are thankful for all your support for the last few months and look forward to seeing more members back at the Club very soon!

GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE Dear Members, It is with great pleasure to welcome back members at RSYC! We have embarked on the new normal to ensure that the Club is a safe and healthy environment for everyone. The RSYC team has been doing its best to maintain, service and prepare the Clubhouse facilities during the period of closure for your safe return. At the time of writing, all facilities have re-opened except for Jackpot Room, Mahjong Room, Children’s Room, KTV Lounge and Mess Bar. Due to the government restrictions on gatherings, we have not included future events in the magazine. In the event of any positive change, we will be happy to bring back Club events, where possible, so do keep a lookout for our e-newsletter and regularly check our website for the latest information. In accordance to the Government advisory, all Club facilities are required to reduce capacity within venues. Group activities are limited to not more than 5 persons, including dine-in at our F&B outlets. More information on the safe returning to RSYC can be found on page 5. We strongly urge all members to adhere to the safe distancing measures and guidelines that have been put in place and to continue adopting good hygiene practices. Masks should be worn as a default at all times and it is a must to check-in/out using SafeEntry during your visit.

• The minimum Food & Beverage Spending Levy (MSL) will be waived in full for two Quarters from April to September 2020 • All members will be awarded $100 Food and Beverage (F&B) credits and they may be used in all F&B outlets. The F&B credits will be valid until 30 th September 2020. • All members will be awarded a one night stay in superior room including breakfast for two persons. Members who wishes to book an additional room on the same night or on the second consecutive night will enjoy a special rate of 50% off room rate of $125+. • A berthing fee rebate of 62% for the month of May for all boating members.

KEEPING BOATING SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE Article contributed by YP Loke As I write this, Singapore is just into Phase Two of the re-opening measures introduced after the easing of our enforced circuit breaker. Boating activities can resume as part of this phase. By now, it has been drilled into us to expect a new post-pandemic normal. So, it should come as no surprise that boating post circuit breaker will come with caveats, as is the case of countries that have resumed boating ahead of us. In Singapore, the measures that boaters must follow can be distilled into four key areas: 1. Contract Tracing: Each boat must maintain a register to enable contact tracing if the need arises (for businesses, this can be a SafeEntry QR Code). 2. Safe Distancing: Not more than 5 persons on board, excluding employees (captain & crew) hired to operate the boat. Where possible, practice safe distancing by following the 1 metre apart rule. 3. Personal Hygiene: Keep hands and surfaces sanitised. When practicable mask up if there are guests (not from the same household) on board. 4.Boat Alone: Do not socialise on the marina pontoon or raft up with other boats at sea. The Singapore Yacht Show has become the premier boat and yacht show in Asia

Many clubs are reminding members that BCPs (Business Continuity Plans) that are in place may mean that employees may be divided into teams and are therefore working at half the normal staff strength. This, in addition to health screening measures, puts a strain on operations. At the same time, members must be patient and allow more time transiting from their club to their boat. Many marinas also require that boats leaving and returning to the marina call ahead, so that an orderly queue can be maintained. This will relieve congestion and ensure safe distancing measures are not breached. Many other countries have reported that boat owners have returned to the water with a vengeance after being closeted at home. The claustrophobic effect of a forced lockdown has led to a yearning for wide open spaces and a human reconnection with nature - boating and watersports certainly deliver on both these fronts. It is not clear however how long this pent-up feeling to embrace the great outdoors will last. But it is a window of opportunity for boating to showcase and promote its healthy outdoor side. Once past the immediate post-lockdown surge, the outlook might be less bright, reflecting the sentiments of the weak economy. We have seen in previous downturns (think Asian Financial Crisis or SARS), that conspicuous consumption was frowned upon. For example, in Thailand, politicians pandering to the populist vote introduced a boat tax which dealt a crippling blow to boating businesses in the country. This time, there is the added complication of disrupted supply chains as manufacturers return to boatbuilding, which may have significant impact on new boat sales worldwide. Despite many boat shows being cancelled or postponed in the first half of 2020, dealers in many countries including Singapore are reporting an uptick in sales and inquiries. The Singapore Yacht Show was - among other shows globally – forced by the pandemic to be postponed (the new dates are 22nd to 25th October 2020) Boat shows are an important outreach by the industry to prospective buyers and the public. They generate interest and excitement, keeping boating top-of-mind. They are the industry’s shop window where consumers can feel and touch the product. Unlike the automobile industry where you can go into a showroom at any time, boats are on display only a few times a year in this part of the world. Dealers depend on shows to build and update their database of prospects, which they then develop throughout the year to convert to sales. Having said that, the nature of shows may well change after Covid-19. The need for safe distancing and the limitation on the size of gatherings may lead to smaller “distributed” shows. Virtual boat showrooms have also sprung up in the online sphere, accessible globally and often on-demand. The profile of boaters has also changed with the average age of the boater rising worldwide, as fewer young people take to boating. One key insight is that millennials are more likely to purchase experiences rather than product. However, boat shows are slow to seriously embrace the selling of boating experiences. With or without shows, the overall industry needs to strategise on how best to win over new converts and reverse this trend. Covid-19 may well be a catalyst that accelerates this change.

SPECIAL FEATURE With countries in lockdown, crew transfers have become a problem. Over 300,000 seafarers are stuck on ships unable to sign on or off. It is today not only an operational problem but also a humanitarian concern. Although in boating, the scale is nowhere near what it is in the commercial and cruise sectors, it poses similar problems. For example, some crew on yachts are similarly confined, unable to land or sign off; and there are also instances where owners are unable to sign on new crew because of travel restrictions. In Asia, owners are less hands-on and more reliant on crew than our western counterparts. The Covid-19 control measures exacerbate the difficulty in securing crew, a situation which already existed before the circuit breaker due to the application of a quota on foreigners working as boat crew. Will Covid-19 force a change to this Asian cultural norm with owners becoming more self-reliant and hands-on in their approach to boating? Time will tell as habits are hard to change. To keep customers, industry must play a role in helping boat owners transition to this new mindset. The Coronavirus has undeniably affected every strata of society. It has placed great emphasis on personal health, resilience and well-being. The impetus for change, be it a return or a conversion to boating, might perhaps be more intrinsic as may be suggested by research, both previous and emerging, on the health benefits of being out with nature. Many such studies have shown that people who reside near water fare better than those who stay inland. Author Wallace J. Nichols expounds in his book “Blue Mind” – “Simply the mere sight and sound of water promotes wellness by lowering cortisol, increasing serotonin and inducing relaxation”. Around the world, boating associations and communities are today initiating campaigns promoting the return to the activity, governed by measures to safeguard the interest of boaters, service providers and the general public. Every individual has a role to play in keeping boating safe and accessible for everyone.

WYNNUM MANLY YACHT CLUB

The Wynnum Manly Yacht Club was founded in 1962 by a group of local sailors who decided that there was a need for an ‘all boat’ club to support racing of various classes of vessels, and the WMYC was formed at its location - Royal Esplanade at Manly, Brisbane, Australia. The club’s facilities provide access via Manly Boat Harbor to Moreton Bay in South East Queensland. The WMYC has a dedicated cruising division which arranges several day, overnight and long weekend trips throughout the year, allowing motor and sail yachts to cruise in company and explore Moreton Bay and beyond. This proves a great way for new boat owners to pick up advice on boat handling and for new skippers in the region to find out the best way to navigate and enjoy The Bay. This cruising division links closely with the annual Inter Club Bay Cruise held in September each year and is the highlight of the cruising calendar for many. Since 1997 the yacht racing activities of The Club have been conducted by the Wynnum Manly Sailing Club. The WMSC runs several regattas during the year including The Hart Cup, a Lady Skippers Race mid-year and since 1976, The Saint Helena Cup. On top of this the Sailing Club also conducts a single or short-handed series of races each year and a social Sunday afternoon race (SAGS) is held each week. These sailing events are of course, complimented by lively social events hosted by the WMYC. The Manly Dragon Boat Club chose WMYC as their base in 2006 and since then has become a vibrant part of the club community. You will see them launching their boats most Saturday mornings, embarking on training exercises that have led to much success in national and international competitions. WMYC Members enjoy an active social scene around the clubhouse, with regular dining and entertainment evenings arranged during the year, trivia competitions, a great patio and bbq area and the bar opens to Members, guests and visitors each Sunday afternoon. Virtual Classes - PPCDL

TheBoatShopAsia (TBSA) has been operating in RSYC since 2013 starting with self-drive yacht charters through to competency courses and then running of PPCDL courses from 2015 onwards. You would have seen their office if you drive to the parking space in between the main clubhouse and the dry stack. TBSA’s core business today is PPCDL training and Charters. They are also involved in distributing and selling boats, seasports equipment and running of events. When COVID19 struck Singapore in late January 2020, most business owners felt that this would go away after a while. By early March, when the number of cases climbed to the high hundreds, TBSA felt that they had to consider alternative ways of conducting PPCDL if the government did shut down businesses in a bid to reduce community infections. For fear of losing business, they pulled together instructors and resources and started rebuilding course curriculum to fit it into a virtual structure. They developed eLearning courses on TalentLMS platform and developed a virtual PPCDL course curriculum that promotes more interaction between students and the instructor during the class. They also invested heavily on technology to allow courses to be conducted from homes while delivering crystal clear video and audio. For auditability purposes, SOPs was created which placed human monitors in the course to ensure that students have their cameras turned on and are attending the course throughout to clock the necessary theory hours required by SMA. In their inaugural dry run of the course on 27th of March 2020, they had PPCDL instructors as well as SMA officials to provide feedback on how better to improve the virtual course and started tweaking the curriculum to maximize the effectiveness. Today, TBSA has an extensive virtual curriculum that has been tried and tested by many, great content which has led to a higher pass rate, and most important of all, a fantastic team of instructors, who are well equipped with the skills to teach a virtual class effectively, and be able to elicit the interaction that is needed to keep the course fun and engaging. With over 100 people trained in the last 2 months, they have a lot of students eager to get into the water and get their hands on a boat for the practical training once we hit phase 2 post circuit breaker. Going forward, TBSA will be offering both virtual and in-class courses (at RSYC) and we expect the virtual course to have a higher take up of students. Going virtual with training has also allowed TBSA to expand beyond the shores of Singapore at a faster pace. In March 2020, TBSA signed an agreement to develop a self-drive charter business in Penang, Port Dickson and Langkawi with our partner Pen Marine Sdn Bhd. They developed an all new training curriculum for new boaters called Powered Craft Driving Course (PCDC) to promote safe and fun boating in Penang. Even with Malaysia’s MCO, they have managed to conduct virtual PCDC courses for over 50 students to date with more planned in the coming weeks.

COVID19 has forced many businesses to change their business models, their processes, their systems, and the way they view and serve their clients. Couple of learnings TBSA took away from this: 1. Understand the new normal – What restrictions will be in place, what does it means to your business, and how can we work within those parameters. 2. Be open to changing your business model – Clement, the director of TBSA read an article that said that ‘COVID19 has done to the largest companies in the world what their CEO and CTO couldn’t do for the longest time….. digitization of their businesses’. So be open to change and be open to consider any possibilities with your business. 3. Embrace technology – Technology needs to be a friend and not a stumbling block. It will help pivot your business as it had for many others who embraced early. Today, the world is more receptive of digital engagements than before so we need to leverage that. COVID19 has significantly changed their business. While it has impacted a large part of business, TBSA managed to survive by accelerating other parts of their business and aggressively growing into new markets. It had been a tough journey for TBSA, but they manage to rough it out and hopefully, with new acquired skills, assets and technologies, they can take advantage of the recovery to accelerate their growth. Welcome to the BASCO Briefing for Boat Owners. Keeping you informed of boat market trends and developments from Singapore and Asia in these interesting times. The last four weeks has seen a lot of enquiry and a number of people booking viewings when the lockdown lifts. We are encouraged to see the rise of buying-without-viewing which is something BASCO Boating is committed to achieving for buyers and sellers where appropriate. We do this with our BOBBAS platform, and we have personally transacted numerous online boat deals over the last 3-years without the buyers seeing the boat. Two examples are boats sold to Australian buyers, sight unseen. Both sales were in the USD400–700 price range and excellent quality boats. This trend will only increase, and Covid-19 has now made this purchasing trend more visible. The possibility is more real in boat owner’s minds compared to pre-Covid-19 when many boat owners may have said they believed this could never happen. Market Outlook It was reported in several media outlets that boat brokers haven’t slowed down. We certainly can vouch for this as well. There was a lot of sales activity with boats changing hands in March and early April before the lockdown. What we’ve noticed is boat buyers (and those who we call boat deciders and boat searchers) have had more time to browse online and to reflect on their boating dreams and goals. They’ve simply had more space to explore these ‘pushed to one-side dreams’ and buyers are making enquiries and putting in place steps to explore the boating lifestyle in earnest. News headlines indicate boat sales are booming amid the pandemic. Just look at these headlines from News8 and Newsbreak “Boat sales booming as other industries struggle to stay afloat amid pandemic shutdowns” “Boat dealers, marina managers’ report business is booming during coronavirus shutdown” In Asia, boat sales have been strong and we are expecting a strong surge in demand in June, July, and August as the lockdown eases. There is pent-up demand from the desire to get away from it all, and what better way than boating, even among social distancing requirements. Our boat “decider “coaching services and our boat buyer sourcing services have experienced an uptick in the last two months. It is perfect timing for boat buyers to get prepared, do their research, get their goals and objectives lined up so they are ready to hit the ground running when the time to travel and view is upon us. Additionally, there may be good deals during the next 6–9 months, so boat buyers, searchers and deciders are definitely wondering about this opportunity as well.

SURVIVING COVID19 THE BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER WAY! Article contributed by Uncle Jevan and Aunty June of Metazone

We entered the Covid19 Circuit Breaker in April and have only just emerged into Phase 1 of opening up, just last week, in June. No sailing, no meetups, no going out, everyone minimizing human contact to snuff out the virus, and to keep our communities safe from contracting the virus. While everyone is struggling to adapt to Home Based Learning and Working From Home, Metazone’s Big Brother Big Sister group had no choice, but to postpone our 2020 physical programs. Instead, we started our Saturday Online Series to reach out to our sailors and the greater community. Our first online gathering was on Easter weekend. Auntie Xenia started the ball rolling and taught us how to make Easter eggs, and shared with us how Eastern Europeans celebrated Easter. She also shared with us the stories and traditions on why we paint Easter Eggs and what it signifies. In subsequent weeks, she continued on to show us how to upcycle old t shirts to make nonmedical face masks. Aunty Xenia, who was borne into a German family, taught us how to make decorative Ketupats. During her class, we were very fortunate to have Muslims from all over the world share with us what their families are doing to celebrate Ramadan amidst this global COVID lockdown. We have friends from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran, Germany and Kazakstan share with us the special traditions they did to make Ramadan so special to their families. On Hari Raya weekend, we have Aunty Sarah from Iran share with us how to make Iranian Lanterns. These lanterns were made without the flame, and are used as decorations in some parts of the Middle East during Ramadan. Although we had to physically distance ourselves during this time, the opportunity to gather online to do something together as a family, and a global community to celebrate festivals together makes our COVID experience memorable. Our traditional BBBS yearly induction, Sailing and Sustainability program became an online TFortress Challenge in May. Here, over 80 secondary school participants, Big Bro Big Sis’s (BBBS) and teachers delved deeper and learnt more about sustainability and our values. During the brought forward May holidays, we played Virtual Challenge, revolving around our Sustainability values and concepts, to gain game points. The winners of the Virtual Challenge got to faceoff their school teachers in a multiplayer online game called Mobile Legends. Our teachers held up for a while. But were relentlessly destroyed by the much more experienced, and tactical Secondary Two students. Although not having met physically during this time; BBBS, teachers and students both learnt more about each other, and had great fun together playing online games. Most recently, we introduced a series of online Sailing classes with Uncle Greg. This Series teaches new sailors some basic sailing knowledge using a multiplayer sailing simulator, VR Regatta – inshore. The course covers topics such as parts of the boat, point of sail, upwind, downwind sailing and racing rules & tactics. Uncle Greg and Uncle Pei Ming even constructed a homemade wind machine to show us how airflow, flows over the sails to create lift.

Each Saturday, after the sailing tutorials, we run online regattas with sailors from the Japan Sailing Federation. Sailors and parasailors from Japan race with an international team of sailors in Singapore. Some of us, are only online sailors, ready to learn the real thing when the coast is clear. Some of us have more experience, guiding and sharing tips with the rest of us. Our small group of 30 to 40 have now grown close to a thousand online on various platforms last Saturday. With regular participants not only from Singapore, but from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Japan, Thailand, Russia, UK, Middle East, India, New Zealand, Australia, and counting. As we strive to keep our communities together during the Circuit Breaker, we became a community bound not by fear or lockdown circumstances, but with everyone looking forward being together to learn on Saturday meetups to say hello to old and new friends. We are looking forward to the day we can again go back to RSYC to sail. And, for our new friends made during this time to introduce them to our home club RSYC. We welcome you all to come join us every Saturday 2pm, live on Facebook or ZOOM. Let’s make some new friends and learn how to sail. ESSENTIAL SURVEY FOR PLEASURE CRAFT

New regulations under Merchant Shipping (Pleasure Craft) CAP. 179 With effect from 1st July 2020 Neptune Safety Far East Pte Ltd is an accredited company authorized and accredited by the Singapore Maritime Port Authority to conduct pleasure craft survey services. According to the new guideline under CAP. 179, all Singapore-registered private pleasure craft must be surveyed once every 3 years to be deemed operationally safe at sea.
