AT THE HELM

AT THE HELM Dear Fellow Members, Just about a year ago, our Club underwent major renovations to expand our gymnasium and install new fitness and sporting equipment. A growingly number of members have since been utilising the bigger and brighter gymnasium. Most encouraging has been the positive feedback received from the fitness buffs amongst us about its state-of-the art equipment. Our gymnasium continues to be a popular facility among members. Extensive refurbishment works was also completed in the Wharf Kitchen. We replaced the entire ceiling and lighting, effectively enhances the kitchen with more efficient, clean and safe cooking facilities. Our consistent efforts in upholding high hygiene standards were recognized and re-affirmed with Grade A rating under the NEA Food Hygiene Grading Scheme for food retail establishments. The Foreshore Deck was abuzz with activity recently at our annual Oktoberfest. Members and their guests had a merry night filled with live music, games, traditional German food such as delicious pork knuckle and sausages and free-flow of wine and beer. Feedback has been positive and encouraging. Kudos to the F&B and Event teams for their excellent efforts to deliver a successful and wellattended blasting party. As we begin to draw 2019 to a festive close, we look forward to your taking part in a wide array of exciting events and activities lined up. Please refer to our website https://rsyc.org.sg/events/ for information on popular up-coming events like the RSYC Fishing Competition,

RSYC Karaoke Contest, Members’ Night – Christmas Theme and of course Countdown to 2020. Our young ones can look forward to school holiday programmes such as a Clay Making Workshop and a Terrarium Making Workshop. We have created special F&B menu and various promotions to complement the year-end festive mood. Delights like luscious honey-glazed ham, roast turkey, Angus strip loin, Cappuccino baby back ribs and roasted whole pork knuckle are available for your Yuletide feasting. Takeaway order forms are available for members hosting their own parties and still want to enjoy RSYC’s quality cuisine. As part of our on-going efforts at community outreach, the RSYC Charity Cruise to Pulau Hantu will be held on November 30 2019 from 9am to 5pm. The beneficiaries are low income families residing in the West Coast constituency who might not have access to experience such activity. We appeal for volunteers, boats, jet-skis and donations in-kinds or cash to support this very good cause. Separately, we are also exploring the possibilities of introducing our nonboating members to experience the lifestyle of pleasure boating. This could include one-day “Weekend Island Getaways” or “Social Get-Togethers” on-board members’ boats organised monthly by and for members on a costsharing basis. For this, we need a pool of boat owners keen to participate and start this initiative. Interested boaters are requested to contact Event Department at 6768 9488 or email to events@rsyc. org.sg

One final note is a reminder to all boating members regarding water wastage at the lay-by or boat washing area. Indiscriminately leaving water running wastefully while attending to other tasks is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We may introduce stringent measures if these acts persist. Water is a precious resource. Everybody must do his part to conserve it. The supply of water must never be taken for granted. I hope you will ring in the holiday cheer at RSYC with your families and friends this festive season. On behalf of the RSYC Management Committee, I wish you and all your loved ones good tidings and all the joys of the season. Have a wonderful start to the New Year! Thank you and best wishes! GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE

GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE Dear Members, I would like to thank all members and their guests who came and supported the Oktoberfest on 11th October 2019. We saw a successful turnout of 146 diners gathered at the foreshore and tucking into sumptuous spread of German food with live band music and stage games. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and having a great time! On 14th September 2019, we did our very first sailing trial this year in collaboration with Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS). We received overwhelming response for the try-outs and the 20 slots for the session was taken up within a few days. Members who attended the sailing trial enjoyed the session and felt that it was a great experience and would like to have more of such sessions. We also conducted Level 1 Dinghy Proficiency course in October this year in collaboration with NUS with positive response. We will be conducting more basic sailing courses and activities next year so do keep a lookout. You may also indicate your interest to us by emailing to events@rsyc.org.sg and we will update you once we have confirmed our sailing activities. The holiday season is here again and I am pleased to inform you all that we’ve got an array of F&B promotions for you to enjoy in the month of November and December. If you prefer to celebrate Christmas without the hassle of cooking, join us on Tuesday, 24th December 2019 for our Christmas Eve Dinner Buffet at The Wharf or try our Christmas Specials at La Pizzeria from 24th to 29th December 2019. In the spirit of merry making, do invite your family and friends.

Celebrate and usher in the new year at our New Year’s Eve Countdown Party at La Pizzeria with 5-course set meal. This party promises to be a bash with free-flow sparkling wine and beer, live band music and stage games so come in your best attire, hang loose and join in the fun! For a more intimate NYE celebration, join us at The Wharf as Chef has specially created three new dishes just to celebrate the end of 2019. Lastly, I would like to remind all members that RSYC is a unique club being the only members-owned yacht club in Singapore. We love its rich heritage and its friendly environment and are happy to have own a piece of Singapore’s history simply by being a RSYC Member. As such, your full cooperation is essential to maintain this beautiful heritage place and we ask for your assistance in the following area: 1) Control water usage in the Marina and Dry Stack. As everyone knows, water is a very precious resource in Singapore and should not be wasted unnecessarily. We hope that members can do their part to reduce water usage. These efforts will go into reducing the Club’s utility expenses every month. 2) Keep the pontoon clean in order to maintain our Club Image. RSYC is like a second home to many of our members. Just like you would always maintain your house to topnotch condition, we hope you could keep your berth and pontoon clean and in tip-top condition to leave a good image of the Yacht Club especially to visiting guests.

3) Do not use bicycle and Portable Mobile Devices (PMDs) on the pontoon. For safety reason, kindly do not use bicycle and other PMDs on the Pontoon as it may cause fatal accident. Boaters have to store the device on their boats and not park them on the pontoons or fingers. Your kind cooperation is much appreciated. I am sure with everyone’s joint effort, we could make this Club a better place for all. In closing, on behalf of RSYC management, we wish all members a Merry Christmas and a Wonderful & Prosperous New Year ahead! See you at the Club soon! Warm Regards, CLAUDIO SCHETTINO General Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

RSYC MISSION STATEMENT To build upon our rich tradition as Singapore’s premier yacht club, member-owned and affordable, and providing the best sea sports facilities with excellent amenities.

SY WINDROSE OF AMSTERDAM Interview with Captain Javier Sanso

RSYC is privileged to have Superyacht Windrose of Amsterdam at our marina for 3 months from 15th October 2019 till January 2020. They are in Singapore for a stopover for boat maintenance works before continuing their world tour. SY Windrose of Amsterdam made headlines around the world after breaking the Transatlantic crossing record twice both in 2002 and 2005. With her sophisticated engineering systems, low freeboards, elegant sheer and long overhangs, Windrose won the ShowBoats Award for Highest Technical Achievement. Her elegant lines and classic detailing also ensure she is a welcome sight at all the large classic yacht regattas around the world. RSYC staff had the rare opportunity to go onboard the beautiful yacht and was given a tour of the interior of the sailing yacht by the wonderful crew. We are also honored to speak to the captain of SY Windrose of Amsterdam, Mr Javier Sanso who shared with us more about the beautiful superyacht and her adventure.

AT THE HELM SPECIAL FEATURE

RSYC: Please introduce SY Windrose of Amsterdam and her owner. Captain Javier Sanso: Windrose of Amsterdam is a fabulous 152 feet Schooner built in 2002. After many years of racing in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, the present owner decided that it was time to take her on a world tour visiting the remote areas of the world. RSYC: Can you tell us a little about your adventures with SY Windrose of Amsterdam? Captain Javier Sanso: We sailed from Palma de Mallorca to Ushuaia in Argentina and from there we sailed to Antarctica and had 2 spectacular weeks in the frozen continent. We further sailed up to Patagonian Glaciers and fiords up to Puerto Montt in Chile. After which, we did most of Pacific ocean islands on our way to Singapore. We spent a year in Tahiti and a few months in Fiji and stopped in isolated islands like Vanuatu and Solomon. We also visited Ambon and Bali where our last ports were before arriving into Singapore. RSYC: How does it feel to be the captain of SY Windrose of Amsterdam who had broken the Transatlantic crossing record twice and achieved victory in many yacht regattas? Captain Javier Sanso: It’s a very good feeling to sail this incredible sailing machine. (It) makes me a very proud captain having the best job in the world. RSYC: What is a memory that never fails to make you smile during your sailing adventures? Captain Javier Sanso: When we first started this journey, we sailed above 22 knots in the Atlantic. We wanted to shake down the boat a bit before the long trip... We knew then that was going to be some fun years of sailing ahead of us. RSYC: What would you say to someone who is inspired to travel around the world with a sailboat / yacht? Captain Javier Sanso: I say..... go!!! Prepare the boat and go sailing. If some things on board are not perfect it does not matter. The most important is to leave the port and make miles. RSYC: Any last words you would like to share with our RSYC members? Captain Javier Sanso: It’s a great pleasure to have Windrose of Amsterdam docked at RSYC, an iconic Yacht Club in the world and most important in whole of Asia. Also, we would like to thank all the RSYC Committee Members and staff. We have felt at home after such a big journey. It was great to be in a marina after 2 years. In the name of the Owner and the crew, thank you very much RSYC!

RSYC SAILING TRIAL 14 SEPT 2019 Enthusiastic RSYC members gathered for a chance to try out sailing on 14th September 2019. The sailing trial programme was done in collaboration with BBBS. There were 2 sailing trials spilt into morning and afternoon session. BBBS volunteers came as early as 8.00am to ensure that all equipments are in order. There is a total of 4 boats in use - safety boat, bytes, SB20 and J24. Each session started off with a briefing, introduction about Metazone’s BBBS programme and ice breaker. After which, members were taken on a joy ride which include learning the basic parts of the boat, how to prep the boat for launching into water, some sailing terms and hands-on experience on how to manoeuvre the boat using the point of sails or how to catch wind on the sail. Children got to experience with the bytes with one-to-one coaching while adults were taken on the SB20 or J24 with 2 volunteers from BBBS. We were delighted to hear many positive feedback after the sessions. Most members felt that it was a fruitful session and are looking forward to attend a basic sailing course. For the kids, we could tell that they had fun from their ever-smiling faces throughout the session. We look forward to having more of such sailing trial for our members!

NEW SEMESTER, NEW BEGINNING! NUS SAILING TEAM Article contributed by Matthew Scott of NUS Sailing Team

NUS sailors gathered for a team-bonding games session.

Ahoy! This new semester started off with a blast! NUS Sailing is coming in hot with a new record membership of 118 Sailors this Academic Year 2019/2020! With such excitement, NUS Sailing is focusing on cultivating a new team of up-and-coming sailors, developing sailing skills via peer coaching, inculcating life values through sailing, and of course, having loads of fun!

Western Circuit Regatta 2019 Team RSYC-NUS was strongly represented at this year’s Western Circuit Regatta in both the SB20 and J24 classes. This year’s event delivered good winds of 10-15 knots and great racing on a challenging racecourse characterized by a gusty offshore breeze. Our NUS sailors showed their mettle once again with great performances aboard Walababy and RSYC Dua, both clinching second placed finishes in their respective categories. Team RSYC Dua fought the good fight in the J24 category, managing to climb back to 2nd place in her event after a slow start in the earlier stages of her series. Skipper Dillon How added “The opportunity to sail [RSYC] Dua is something we really relish. It is really great that we can engage and be competitive with sailors who had only obtained their Level 1 certification roughly 6 months ago.” The good results are reminiscent of an experienced team of well-seasoned sailors – one wouldn’t guess that the majority of the NUS sailors competing in this event actually started sailing in university! The ultra-competitive SB20 fleet was contested by the likes of defending champions Glasgow Kiss and the multiple regional games medallists, Team Echol. Team RSYC-NUS aboard Walababy clinched 2nd place overall behind exOlympian Xu Yuan Zhen and his team Xtra Mile 2. Xu was the first Asian skipper to lift the SB20 Championship Trophy in the history of the event.

RSYC Dua takes the lead!

“Medals and results are one thing, but what amazes me most is how our newer sailors are able to come and compete in difficult events like these only a few months after learning how to sail”, said tactician Matthew Scott. “And to be jostling for a place on the podium with the local heavyweights of our sport – it’s really a testament to the hard work everyone has put in to improve over the past few months.” The event was a superb opportunity for the developing talents in our team to get valuable racing experience in a well-contested regatta. Said first-time SB20 skipper Joel Yap, who helmed Team RSYC-NUS 2: “The strong winds as well as competitive fleet made the competition really memorable. We spent much of the first day getting used to racing together as a team. However, we really showed stark improvement, performing much better on the last day.”

Level 1 Dinghy Proficiency Course The first two Level 1 Dinghy proficiency courses of 2019 were a great success, with a total of 28 new sailors graduating from the basic sailing course! Through the course, participants were equipped with basic sailing knowledge and practical sailing skills. Some sailors also got a small taste of fleet racing for the first time during the course. Our partnership with RSYC also allowed us to welcome RSYC members to our sailing community and guide them through the first steps in their sailing journey alongside our new NUS sailors. With a bit of courage getting around the idea of being alone at sea for the first time, many of our sailors quickly got the hang of sailing solo once they hit the water! After 3 days of learning, sailing, and racing, the courses finally came to an end with the sailors ready to embark on the next stage in their sailing journey. As coach Lionel Lim put astutely: “Acquiring this Level 1 certification is only the start of your sailing journey, and if you are willing to put the time into it, sailing will take you places (literally). In addition, I hope you treasure the friendships made during the course and the experiences you share. What makes sailing even more enjoyable is the community and camaraderie.” Most importantly, our new sailors took an immediate liking to the sport. Level 1 participant Shermaine Teo added, “Thank you RSYC, coaches and assistant coaches for all the help and patience over the 3 days! We had a lot of fun and learnt a lot. I’m looking forward to the upcoming sailing fun ahead!”

Upcoming competition: 3rd Guangzhou Nansha Marina International Regatta Certain talented NUS sailors were selected by the Singapore Sailing Federation to represent Singapore at the 3rd Guangzhou Nansha Marina International Regatta, to be held in mid-December later this year. Of the 9 sailors selected to represent the country, 5 of them are current NUS Sailors, and 2 more are NUS Sailing alumni. Said foresail trimmer Amos Huang, “Having only obtained my Level 1 certification last December, it is a surreal experience being able to represent Singapore in an overseas competition. Although the experience is completely new and foreign, I’m sure I will learn and grow a lot from the experience.” The competition last year was intense, with top national teams from countries all over the world competing for the international title. Our sailors are looking to learn as much as possible and of course will be gunning for the top spot! Best of luck, sailors!

Participants gather from all over the world to compete at the 2nd Guangzhou Nansha International Sailing Regatta.

BBBS’S SAILING & SUSTAINABILITY CAMP Article contributed by Ms June Tan of Metazone

The year is almost ending, and our students have waited in eager anticipation for our year-end Sailing & Sustainability (SSP) Phase III Camp. As with all the previous years, the Sailing & Sustainability Program ended with an overnight camp at Outward Bound Singapore (OBS). This year, Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) hosted our pre-camp planning and orientation activities. RSYC is our home club where we planned the activities that helped our participants from eight different secondary schools, volunteers from various polytechnics, ITEs and Singapore Universities to warm up and bond with each other before the camp. During the lead up to the camp, our Big Bro Big Sis (BBBS) sailing and facilitation teams conducted Sailing and Facilitation certification courses at RSYC to ensure that our BBBS are competent sailors, and can meet our high standards when interacting with the students. BBBS also planned games that would reinforce the key values that we are trying to teach to our SSP students. On 25 October, we welcomed 200 excited sailors from our SSP secondary schools, BBBS and corporate mentors. This year, our mentors brought their families to join in the fun, making their beds in the rustic OBS shed, building campfires where our students and the mentors’ kids huddle round to roast marshmallows! We had Mr. Alfonso Murillo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of the Republic of Costa Rica to Singapore, share with our students the keyword “Life is a Journey” and how he relates to this key value throughout the different phases of his life. Mrs. Ambassador, Anna Smirnova, also shared with our students about her work as an interior designer, and encouraged the students to chase their passion, but stay grounded to plan how they would like to achieve their goals.

RSYC.ORG.SG

SEASPORTS With the help of our sailing community, from the various yacht clubs all around our sunny island, we ferried off all two hundred of us across the Kelongs that lines our coast, to our familiar Pulau Ubin OBS camp site. We arrived in the mid-afternoon, and the students took turns to experience sailing; from maneuvering the little dinghies, to crewing on the massive ocean going 40 footer yachts. Students played freely in the sea under the watchful eyes of our coaches that loiter the vicinity from their safety boats, and our BBBS leaders that were monitoring onshore. Our camp is a unique one for the youth, where the only rules were pertaining to water safety. With the freedom that they have earned through self-regulation, SSP students from the different schools rekindled the friendships that were made during the SSP Phase I camp. As the sun sets upon us, our young hungry sailors proceed to eat, drink and be merry. So, out comes the mess-tins, solid fuels and charcoals, each contributed by the different schools that had left over from their previous camps. The BBBS taught the students how to make fire, and the students made their own dinner. There, old friendships were re-ignited and new friends meet around the camp fire.

After dinner, armed with hand reels, head torches and their life jackets, the students streamed onto the jetty. They were hopeful to catch a crab or two, to bring to the barbecue pits that the teachers have set up. Every year, we encourage our mentors, BBBS and teachers to bring their families to the camp. By doing so, we hope to build a stable community that can share their deep and extensive experience with our youth. Mr. Evgeny Ilyin, Chief Risk Officer of Rosneft, together with his wife Anna, and their 2 young children joined our SSP students at the jetty for some late night fishing. Anna shared with us about her life in Russia, working as a food scientist for Mars chocolate. Her interest and passion about chocolates led her to earn her PhD. She continued to pursue knowledge about food sciences. Eventually, her pursuit and expertise opened many career opportunities for her. We had lots of fun sailing to Pulau Ubin Island, and all this would not have been possible for the people that had been so generous to host us (Outward Bound Singapore, Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, Changi Sailing Club). We would also like to thank our SSP teachers for their dedication and solidarity to the program by lending us tools and equipment, guiding us and giving us ideas as a community, provide the best for our children. Our corporate mentors, from our local enterprises and the various MNCs, setting aside time for our students to visit them at their workplace, and to show us what it takes to be successful people. And last but not least, our awesome sailing community! Where sailors and boaters from the various yacht clubs from all over Singapore, sailing their crafts over to Changi Sailing Club to ferry our students over to Pulau Ubin. Thank you so much, all these would not have been possible without you. See you very soon! Big Bro Big Sis http://metazone.org/bbbs/

BBBS - RSYC SAILING TRIAL Article contributed by Vinoshini Selvathurai of Metazone BBBS

On 14 Sept 2019 BBBS hosted Members from RSYC to experience the Metazone way of sailing. Not only did we host Members, but their families too. Our guests for the day were aged 5-65 years old. Our BBBS have proven to us via our SSP camps that they can take on the challenge of hosting passengers aged 14-16 on sailboats. However, they have little experience working with passengers younger than that. So let’s see what our Big Brothers and Big Sisters have to say about their experiences. Here’s what Hao Jie, one of our seasoned sailors have to say about their experience during that sail: “The RSYC sailing trial is an excellent opportunity for members to understand what BBBS is all about. It is also a great opportunity for our BBBS sailors to practice skippering a boat with first time sailors. I am glad that the members find this an enjoyable and engaging experience, and appreciate the effort undertaken by the BBBS volunteers in preparing and executing this event.”

Jing Ming taking a 5 year old passenger on the byte for the first time.

Our BBBS now have proven to us that regardless of being experienced or not, as long as we put in the effort to step out of our comfort zone and be patient and resilient in doing what we do, we can achieve an intended outcome. As for this session, that was to engage our passengers well and give them an experience that they may not have had before. A week after the sail, our handwork was shown to be fruitful. How? You may ask. Well, You know you’ve done a good job when you walk pass someone you don’t remember, and they ask “Are you from Metazone?” Jing Ming taking a 5 year old passenger on the byte for the first time.

SEASPORTS On another note, BBBS also hosted our members for the level 1 sailing program. Our sailors were put through 3 months of sailing training in preparation for their level one training. A mixture of new and older batches of BBBS joined the training program. The course taught our sailors a mixture of both theoretical and practical sailing skills. Here’s what Darwish, one of our sailors have to say about his experience during the course of the program, “What I experienced during the level 1 training programme was a smooth and well planned schedule, we had the time ratio leaning slightly towards practical as water time is crucial for familiarising with the byte. The theory lessons were straightforward and made easy to understand.” Shahadah training on bytes.

Lionel who was once part of the BBBS tribe, coached our new sailors together with other coaches. He also shared his experience about coaching our sailors,”I took up this Level 1 program with the goal of developing not just sailors, but future coaches capable of guiding future generations of students in sailing. Throughout the program, there were setbacks such as damaged equipment and conflicting schedules. However, the students have shown their determination in completing the course and have come to treat the club as their home and their boats as their own. They regularly come for trainings despite having demonstrated skills beyond the level 1 syllabus, displaying their passion for sailing and the mindset that learning never ends. In summary, it is rare to find a program where the coaches can learn as much from the students, as the students from them.” Here’s what Lyanna has to say about her experience during the level 1 sailing training program run by us, “The level 1 training program is a good avenue for the big brothers and big sisters to hone their sailing skills on a byte and prepare for the Sailing & Sustainability Program. Over the well-structured sessions, BBBS’ dedicated coaches - Joelle and Lionel - taught the team vital skills that we need to know to be proficient in sailing and to ensure the participants’ safety during SSP. This enhanced the team’s confidence in delivering a fun and safe sailing expedition. While the program is tailored to ensure that partakers are competent to pass the Level 1 test, the skills taught sets a good foundation for our BBBS to be better sailors on bigger boats in the future.” With that we would like to congratulate all level 1 certified sailors on their newest journey to being a better sailor.
