AT THE HELM
AT THE HELM Dear Fellow Members, The RSYC committee priority for this term is to focus on the next stage of development for the club, following the completion of the breakwater and alterations to the wet berths at H, I & J Rows. The Development Sub-Committee has been renamed as the “Project SubCommittee” and will operate as a working group, headed by Commodore to reflect the need for us to focus on the plans to renew the club’s site lease which is due to expire in 2027. The RSYC Committee have already had positive meetings with Sports Singapore and they have expressed support for the lease renewal. They will work with us together with Singapore Land Authority to establish their criteria for investment and development of the club to support a new lease. There has been quite a bit of media coverage of the Government plans for redevelopment of the southern coastline for residential, entertainment and sporting activities. The development will take place in phases for the next 5 to 10 years and we are positive this will give us a more competitive advantage in securing our land lease as we are located within the development zone. The Project working group will continue to develop our plans for the lease renewal. We will provide further updates on any
development via the club magazine, RSYC website and notice boards as appropriate. Our efforts will be principally allocated to: - Development required by SLA as part of the lease renewal. - Fund Raising to pay for lease renewal fees & development/investment costs. - Maintain relations with Sports Singapore & sporting/sailing communities & the West Coast communities in general. We would like to take this chance to call upon members who have experience, suitable contacts or simply interested in contributing to the Project SubCommittee to come forward and join us in our monthly meeting. Your efforts would be most welcome. Please register your interest directly with Commodore Balakrishnan or through our General Manager, Mr Claudio Schettino. Lastly, RSYC will be forming a new youth committee for age 18 – 25 years old to inject more fresh ideas in the RSYC community. If you would like to develop your kid’s leadership skills, get them to volunteer with us now! Application forms can be obtained from the front desk. Completed forms could be email to Events Department at events@rsyc.org. sg. My final point is to advise all members that I have tendered my resignation from the position of Vice Commodore and as Committee Member of RSYC.
This is due to an increased workload with my employer that leaves me little time to support and contribute to the club at this time. I hope to be able to return to the RSYC Committee at some time in the future. In the meantime, I wish all members and the remaining RSYC Committee members the very best in their use and enjoyment of the RSYC. I thank you all for your past support and look forward to seeing you around our club. Best Wishes, JOHN MCGUGAN Vice Commodore Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE
GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE Dear Members, The recently concluded RSYC Regatta 2019 was well attended. We have received positive feedback on this year’s Regatta and will continue to make this signature event more successful next year. This year, we have a total of 20 participating sailing boats comprising of various classes which include IRC, PY and SB20 with sailors coming from various clubs, schools and marina in Singapore and beyond. We are also proud to host 8 sailors from Sailability Singapore again this year. We would like to thank all the sailors and skippers, and the race committee and various volunteers who have worked hard to make the event a great success! As you might have noticed, we have more sailing activities over the weekend in recent months. This is made possible with the collaboration with Metazone under its “Big Brother Big Sister” programme. Metazone works closely with Secondary Schools and teach students a set of key values using Sailing as a medium to help them internalise and see these values being implemented in an experiential way. The students are usually in RSYC for their first phase of the programme where they are trained with facilitation skills and basic sailing skills. Metazone welcome our members who are interested in sailing, facilitation, camp planning and community activities to volunteer for the programme. In addition, they are offering members who have youth between the age of 14 to 25 to join in and benefit from the programme for free. If interested, kindly email to the Events Department at events@rsyc.org.sg Still on the topic of sailing, we are happy to share that we have recently renewed the partnership with NUS to have their NUS Sailing Team train at our marina providing them logistics support for their weekly sailing activities. NUS Sailing Team has been representing RSYC on both national and international levels.
They have been performing at high level winning victory at the RSYC Regatta, Western Circuit Regatta and Changi Sailing Club J24 National Championships. NUS sailors have also participated in the World University Sailing Championships with much success. More stories will be shared on page 44 of the magazine. For the new term 2019/2020, the Events & Seasports Subcommittee was separated from the Membership and Marcom Subcommittee to focus and provide the direction for the planning and promotion of both social and sea sports activities run by the Club. The Subcommittee headed by Chairman, Mr Nigel Ho and Vice Chairman Mr Richard Low is also tasked to review the budgetary requirement of each event, assist in strategic plan to promote boating and sailing and also review feedback from members on past events and provide recommendations as necessary. We are also gathering volunteers to form a youth committee, which is a subsidiary arm of the Events and Seasports Subcommittee. The Youth Committee which comprises of youth between the age of 18 to 25 is responsible for matters relating to young people and the objective is to promote and spearhead in events, social and sea sports activities that integrate the young members in RSYC. If you have anyone in mind who might be interested to join us, do share this information with them and reach out to us by emailing to events@rsyc.org.sg. This year, we will be bringing back the Oktoberfest on 11 October 2019. The inaugural event will see members revel in a night of entertainment with live band, free-flow beer and housepour wine, traditional German food such as the alltime favourite pork knuckle and beerrelated games! Register your interest with us early to enjoy special rates! More details can be found on page 17. If you are karaoke enthusiast, do sign up for our karaoke contest on the 25th
October 2019 and let your talent shine. It will definitely be an enjoyable day with your fellow contestants as you sing to your heart’s content and stand a chance to win attractive prizes! If you know someone who can hit all the right notes and belt out songs like a pro, be sure to share the news of this contest! Other family friendly events in the pipeline also include Halloween Party and craft workshops for kids, Fishing Competition, Durian Dessert Demonstration Workshop, December Holiday Market and the Year End Countdown party! Lastly, I hope all members will give us their continued support in our events and ongoing promotion as we continue to improve our services to better serve all members! Enjoy RSYC and keep on with the fun! Warm Regards, CLAUDIO SCHETTINO General Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

RSYC REGATTA 2019
SPECIAL FEATURE: RSYC REGATTA 2019 20, 21 & 27th JULY 2019
CHAIRMAN MESSAGE
Dear Members, It gives me great pleasure to report that the club has successfully concluded the RSYC Regatta 2019 in July. I wish to thank all the Sponsors, club members and staff, volunteers, and sailors who came together for two weekends in July, to not only participate in a sailboat race but also to renew old friendships and make new ones. Since RSYC’s formation in 1826, our history is rich with many famous races and trophies that members come across when they enter our club. You will see the varied and historic Regatta cups that line the entrance to our clubhouse. But these trophies will not mean much without the memories of the people and the various sailing teams. The many near misses on the start line, the painful defeats and the sweet victories that accompany these cups make us RYSC. This is my first year as the Chairman of the RSYC Regatta. As an old member, it brought back memories from 55 years ago. That year, it was the first time my father raced a GP14 in the then Royal Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) Regatta. I was only 3 years old, but I still remembered being extremely excited because the club had never been so engrossed with energy. There were many children, and new friendships were forged amongst us young sailors, while our fathers and mothers raced out at sea. The children played, and many lifelong friendships were borne. Regattas for me have not only been about racing sailboats, or deciding the best upwind line to take is, or which part of the course is favoured. Beyond just racing, the RSYC Regatta is an opportunity to make new friends and to renew old friendships. It is also to show new generations of young club members the joys of being on the water. Sometimes we compete against each other on a different sailboat in

the Regatta, but we always come back in friendship and warm hospitality back at the clubhouse. It is my hope that we continue this very important tradition of the RSYC Regatta. It links us to our very famous past and points us to what we need to achieve in the future. To treasure the lessons of friendship and competition we leave as legacies to our youth. This year, we welcome a large number of youth sailors competing in the SB20 class, and we also see many young adults competing in the other racing classes. I hope this trend continues and we can yet again introduce a new generation into this exciting sport of sailboat racing. With this message, I leave you till next year’s RSYC Regatta. Leslie, Skipper for Todak2
Paul O’Malley, Skipper for Red Rum A very enjoyable 3 days racing. Many thanks to the organisers both on and off the water. We very much enjoyed the passage race. Our enjoyment was helped by the fantastic food prepared each day by our onboard chef Xavier. Always good to have one in the crew. See you next year!
I enjoyed this regatta very much. Although I had equipment failure on the 1st day, days 2 and 3 were fun days. It is always nice to sail/race with other boats you don’t usually sail with. So to meet new and old sailors was a highlight in itself. Race management was superb like in last years race. Well run and thoroughly professional. Lastly, hospitality from the staff at RSYC, from the security guards, marina staff and all the personnel that I encountered was first rate. RSYC should pat themselves on the back. Hopefully Todak2 will be back in 2020.
Mr Scottz Lip, Tactician for Team Ambindi Once again, it was Team Ambindi annual pilgrimage to the western part of Singapore for some of the best regatta this sailing season. RSYC Regatta 2019 was one of the best in Singapore. We have been participating in RSYC regattas since 2014 and this is the 6th year we are back. It was very encouraging to see 7 boats in the PY line up. This regatta saw some changes in the PY rating. PY rating or handicap rating is a number given to a boat to compete amongst other boats of different build, model and brand. This helps boats of different speed race together in a regatta. The organiser decided to adopt the National Handicap for Cruisers provided by Royal Yacht Association (RYA) from the UK. In short, it is referred as RYA NHC. The entire rating system, statistical method and instructions are found on www.rya.co.uk. I had the privilege to present the new rating system from RYA and skippers from Arbudthen, Sea Monster, Shengli and RSYC Dua seconded the proposal to adopt this. They believe it is a fair, transparent and validated way to assign a rating to any boat. It comes in the form of a Microsoft Excel sheet and elapsed time can be entered into the spreadsheet dashboard with no additional purchase (it’s free) nor sophisticated operator training. The race was well organised, wind was consistent encouraging, food was very well prepared. I personally like the beef steaks, the lamb chops and the wide selection of salads and side dishes. I look forward to joining the race and catch up with all the sailors and new friends I made.

AT THE RSYC REGATTA HELM 2019
SAILOR SNIPPETS
Jianwen, Skipper for OBS Team 3 The RSYC Regatta was a phenomenonal experience for us. Departing from the marina, making our way to the race course through the fairway was something new and exhilarating. We knew that there would be professional sailors competing, but we told ourselves to not let the pressure get the better of us. To smile radiantly whilst sailing, waving at fellow competitors, putting up a good photographic shot, learning and improving techniques or strategies after each race, and to complete it was what we set out to achieve. We were proud to acknowledge, WE DID IT! Thank you RSYC for having us.
Justin, Skipper for Invictus The RSYC Regatta is always a highlight in the sailing calendar for Team Invictus. As we are based on the northeastern part of Singapore, it is an opportunity to make the journey thru Singapore’s busy harbour. The racing area is unique as it is set amidst everything else that is going on at Tanjong Pagar, Sinki Fairway and the Southern Islands. Passing Raffles Lighthouse is always a treat. It is also one of the few regattas in Singapore where keelboats get to do strict windward-leewards courses. We appreciate the efforts of the race committee and all who put in the time to make this event possible.

RECIPROCAL CLUB
ABERDEEN BOAT CLUB The Aberdeen Boat Club (ABC) was founded in 1967 by like-minded yachting enthusiasts and sports fishermen who wished to enjoy access to the seas off the southern side of Hong Kong Island. The Club was initially housed in relatively humble premises, and incorporated as the Aberdeen Boat Club Ltd. in 1967. The club moved into its current multi purpose-built premises in 1979/80 and has since become one of Hong Kong’s favourite recreational boating and sailing clubs. The Club’s sheltered harbour facilities with easy access to nearby open water quickly established it as a popular spot for sailing and relaxing. The Club has a wide range of facilities for yacht, speedboat and cruiser owners spread over two club houses, with jetty and pontoon moorings available for members’ exclusive use. The Club has over a thousand members and their families, hailing from over 35 different countries. Members and their guests had the chance to learn how to use ‘Thermomix’ on 3rd August through a cooking demo by Thermomix Advisor Ling. “Thermomix” is an innovative kitchen appliance to cook wholesome meals quickly without compromising on taste. The made-shift kitchen was nicely set up at Quarterdeck with the proper utensils neatly laid out on the table. The idea was to create a comfortable ambience for our members. Ling prepared a 3-course meal à la minute in the world’s smallest and smartest kitchen, the most advanced touchscreen Thermomix. The various function of the Thermomix was demonstrated to make items ranging from Lemonade, Mantou, Berries Sorbet, Stir-Fried Vegetables and Pumpkin Soup. The WOW factors are seeing sugar being made into icing sugar in 10 secs and seeing the frozen fruit turn into sorbet in about 1 minute!! Best part is all meal and preparation was done within 45 minutes! Members left the demo class with a satisfied tummy and amazed by the convenience of the Thermomix.

MEMBER’S NIGHT 30 AUG 2019 Members gathered for our bi-monthly RSYC Members’ Get Together on 30th August 2019! The evening started off with a two-piece band bringing us county music as members start to warm up with each other and settled down with their beverages and delicious small bites served by the kitchen. With soothing music, nice beers and laughter echoing in the Mess Bar, it’s time for some fun games. We started off with an icebreaker game of Human Bingo where members got to know each other better by getting them to move around the room and interview each other in order to check off their respective boxes. Members who participated in the game was each given a small prize. Next, it was time to play a game of Kahoot where we test the knowledge of our members on how well they know about animals as well as their reaction time. Prizes were given out to the top 3 winners of the games. The event ended off with bingo, cake cutting ceremony for the birthday babies and lucky draw for members who were present that evening. We look forward to seeing more members in our next Oktoberfest themed Member’s Night on 11th October 2019!

NUS SAILING TEAM Article contributed by NUS Sailing Team
Our NUS Sailors has been busy over the university summer break, representing our club and school at various sailing events. At the same time, the team has been preparing for the annual NUS Student Life Fair, in the hopes of burgeoning our NUS Sailing ranks.
RSYC Regatta 2019 We participated in the annual RSYC Regatta held on 20-21 July and 27 July. The team did us proud, retaining the gold medal in the J24 (PY) division, while clinching the silver medal in the SB20 division.
We were also treated to performances by the student acapella group, NUS Resonance, and the NUS Alpha Verve Cheerleading Team which really completed the RSYC Regatta closing ceremony with energetic performances showcasing the vibrancy of university student life. Said SB20 Skipper Dillon How: “Although the competition was really intense, we are really grateful for the opportunity to perform well as RSYC again. As our training area, our home advantage was really key in securing the closely fought second place finish.
42
RSYC.ORG.SG
SEASPORTS Jonathan Yeo, skipper of RSYC Dua agreed with Dillon that “the home ground advantage” really played to the strengths of the team. Furthermore, he went on to say: “We are grateful for the opportunity to represent RSYC once again, and to have defended the J24 title in RSYC Dua’s name. This memorable experience would not have been possible without the strong support from RSYC and NUS.”
National Tertiary Fleet Racing Championship The inter-tertiary fleet racing championship was held at the National Sailing Centre from 27-30th June, drawing sailors from tertiary institutes such as Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Polytechnic, and the National University of Singapore together to compete on one- design SB20 racing keelboats for the national tertiary fleet racing title. Team RSYC-NUS sent two teams of four sailors to contest for the title, and 2/2 of our teams landed up on the podium!
However, championships like these mean more than just competition to our sailors. This event was a very unique opportunity for us to bond with our fellow tertiary sailors across the various institutions, and beyond the accomplishments and accolades, we all enjoyed the unique diversity and camaraderie that is only found through university sport.
22nd Western Circuit Regatta The Western Circuit Regatta will be held at Raffles Marina from 17, 18 August and 24 August. Drawing the best sailors across Singapore to compete for the illustrious title of Western Circuit Champions. Team RSYC-NUS will be represented by 2 teams on the SB20 (SSF3 and Walababy) as well as a team on the J24 (RSYC Dua). Aiming to better our record in 2018 (Bronze Medal in both the J24 Class and SB20 Class).

NUS Student Life Fair 2019 Every year, our team relies on new members to bolster our ranks. As the graduating batch of NUS sailors leaves, we hope to find a new batch of members to share our passion of sailing with, and to carry our team from strength to strength. This year, the Student Life Fair (SLF) was held in NUS University Town from 15-16th August. The event was open to the public and had an estimated turnout of about 5,000 people. At the Student Life Fair, our sailing team has the opportunity to showcase the sport we love to our peers and freshmen who have just joined NUS. Sailing is a beautiful way to reconnect with nature, and offers us a unique sense of independence and freedom in ways unlike any other sport. Welcoming newcomers to the sport is always a huge joy for us at NUS Sailing because it gives us an opportunity to share what we see in sailing with them. This is the second year that we had a booth at the Student Life Fair and we were amazed by a record turnout about 150 students who indicated their interest in trying sailing. We are looking forward to introducing more students to the joy of sailing, and are expecting our sailing sessions to be absolutely packed in the coming weeks!

NAPOLI 2019 -
SUMMER UNIVERSIADE Article contributed by NUS Sailing Team
July 2019 - The 2019 Summer Universiade saw 6,000 athletes take part in 18 sports from 3-14 July in Napoli, Italy. 2 teams of Singapore’s 8 best university sailors across all institutions travelled to Naples, Italy to represent the country at the biennial event, also known as the World University Games. 5 sailors and 1 coach from the Singaporean contingent are sailors in the NUS Sailing Team.
Team Lineup SGP1 - 5th Jonathan Yeo - NUS Jessica Goh - NUS Jeremiah Yeo - NUS Evangeline Tan - Singapore Polytechnic SGP 2 - 3rd Jillian Lee - NUS Matthew Scott Lau - NUS Tan Jen-E - Edinburgh-Napier Cheryl Teo - Ngee Ann Polytechnic
A Unique Race Format Napoli 2019 - “To Be Unique”. The sailing race format of this year’s World University Games really lived up to the event motto. The sailing event was contested by 16 teams from 13 countries, over 5 days. There were 32 races over the first four days. The top eight teams qualified for the final, which comprised 4 races over a single day. The race format was very exciting - short course racing in a fleet of RS21 sportsboats, a new one-design class of boats featuring a light slender keel bulb, flat planing hull and asymmetrical kite. The upwind-downwind race course was a mere 900m in length, with races lasting 20-25 minutes. The course was also situated very near the shoreline to make the racing as spectator-friendly as possible,

The class of boat was interesting because it was designed so recently that none of the sailing teams at the Summer Universiade had any experience racing in that particular class. Competitors were allowed a couple of hours to train on the new boats in the 2 days before racing, but that was it. This really levelled the playing field and ensured that the results depended solely on the sailor’s skills and talent, rather than how familiar they were racing a particular boat.
Competition Summary The skipper of the winning Finnish team went on to win the U23 Junior World Championship in the Olympic Finn class, which he also won in 2017, just four days after the Universiade. The Austrian skipper in 2nd place was a helm at the Youth America’s Cup – a high performance sailing league which is a gateway to the America’s Cup, the most prestigious regatta in professional sailing. The same team of Australians that finished 4th were defending champions from last year’s World University Sailing Championship. Safe to say the event was contested by great sailors! That said, both Singaporean teams finished in the top 5 out of 16 teams despite the fierce competition, including a bronze medal which is Singapore’s second ever medal from the Games! Singapore was also the only country to have 2 sailing teams in the finals. “During one of the races in the final series both Singaporean teams rounded the first mark ahead. At that moment, it dawned on me how well we had sailed to get to that point in the competition and I just felt proud.” – Mr Cai Weiguo, Coach
Biggest Takeaway Said Matthew Lau (NUS), “The biggest takeaways for us are really the relationships forged both within our team and with other athletes. We could feel that huge atmosphere which comes from so many athletes across multiple sports competing together in the same place. The event was special. Although we all come from different countries and walks of life, sport once again made us come together in a very unique way.” Congratulations team!!!

METAZONE’S EXPERIENCE @ RSYC REGATTA 2019 Article contributed by Vinoshini Selvathurai Metazone BBBS
We know that the Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS) of Metazone can run camps. We know that they can mentor young students, but can they sail? The RSYC Regatta held on 20, 21, and 27 of July provided them with a much needed change of pace from their training and camp planning. For the Regatta, BBBS sent two teams, suitably named after their boats, Team Sticky Beak and Team XOCO. The teams comprised of a couple of seasoned sailors and mainly first time racers. All except Sticky Beak’s skipper Josua only picked up sailing after joining the Metazone programs. Jovi who was on the bow of Sticky Beak says, “It was the first full regatta that I participated in. I was with Lokesh, Edison, and Josua on Sticky Beak. We were a mix of people with different backgrounds and levels of experience in sailing. We didn’t know each other much or at all before this. Tensions were high at some points when we did not get the spinnaker up and down as efficiently as we could have. But I guess all was good eventually. We learnt where we could have done better or faster. I think overall we did alright in working together and helping each other during tacking, gybing and hoisting, although we definitely could do with faster speed and more aggression. There’s SO much more to learn, from sailing techniques to boat maintenance. I’m thankful for this opportunity to sail, and for the friendships made.”
Li Ying, who just joined the BBBS in June, had this to say about her first competition, “It wasn’t all smooth sailing but hey, isn’t that life? There was sun, the sea, sweat, and the sunscreen… All these came together and provided an awesome experience for me. Was it tiring? Yes! Was it fulfilling? Yes! Would I go again? Definitely Yes!” During the race, Coach Pei Ming and Greg observed the performance of the racing teams and gave them pointers in between each race. Race by race, the teams improved in their race execution in terms of boat handling techniques and boat on boat positioning.

Valarie who volunteered and helped with the land duties said, “I never thought that I could have the chance to witness a live sailboat race. As a spectator, I was very inspired by the BBBS team. Both teams demonstrated strong teamwork and perseverance during the race. After the race, I had the opportunity to experience what was it like to be part of a sailboat race by jumping onboard during the sail back to the marina. Teamwork and communication were the takeaways from the experience. For the three days, everyone involved in the regatta demonstrated resilience, patience, the hunger to learn and the eagerness to share. These are the values which the BBBS strongly believes in, that they will guide all BBBS towards a sustainable way of life. Once again they have done the BBBS team proud! We look forward to seeing them race in at the Raffles Marina Western Circuit Sailing Regatta next month!
