VICE COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members,
UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE CLUB As we move towards the year-end, do take note of the range of activities the management has planned especially for you:
Following up from the AGM, which took place on 12 June 2015, I am pleased to inform you that all Sub-Committees have been formed for 2015/2016 and are now in full swing. I would like to thank members who have continued to serve in the sub-committees, and would like to invite other members who can contribute their time and expertise to the relevant sub-committees. Your constructive ideas and feedback will greatly help the Club in progressing forward. Please do write to the General Manager at gm@rsyc.org. sg if you wish to serve in any of the subcommittees. SG50 COMMODORE’S DAY FAMILY CARNIVAL 2015 The recently concluded SG50 Commodore’s Day Family Carnival was a huge success with over 700 members and guests attending the event. While many at the carnival enjoyed the fun games and F&B offerings, many also witnessed the traditional flag raising ceremony for the Commodore, which was the common practice for most yacht clubs back in the early days. See page 18 for photos and report of the event. On behalf of the RSYC Committee, I would like to thank all members, their families and guests for the tremendous support rendered during the event. A big thank you also go to the management and staff for their efforts in organizing and running the event. I look forward to more events and I’m sure you will too.

Dilweg presented to the Club a special gift which came in the form of a model of the famous Australia II. Australia II is an Australian 12-metre-class America’s Cup challenge racing yacht that was launched in 1982 and won the 1983 America’s Cup for the Royal Perth Yacht Club. It was skippered by John Bertrand, and was the first successful Cup challenger, ending a 132-year tenure by the New York Yacht Club. The design of this unique craft featured a reduced waterline length and a short chord winged keel, which gave the boat a significant advantage in manoeuvrability and heeling moment with lower ballast centre of gravity.

Burgee of the Royal Singapore Yacht Club
O
Burgee of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club
FROM ROYAL TO REPUBLIC
n independence, Yusof bin Ishak became the first President of the Republic of Singapore and on 15 May 1967, after the Club, at the request of the government, had relinquished the title Royal Singapore Yacht Club in favour of Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, President Yusof kindly consented to become its patron thus continuing the Club’s tradition of having the head of state as its patron. The Club was registered with the Registrar of Societies on 20 October 1961. Mike Pollett, the honorary secretary of the day recalled: In June 1966 I, as Hon Sec of the Royal Singapore Yacht Club, was summoned, together with, as it turned out, officers of about 10 other Singapore-registered societies with the word “Royal” in their name, to the Registrar of Societies. He explained that the prime minister wished those who could, to drop “Royal” from their title. It became apparent early on that many like ourselves and the Royal Singapore Flying Club, etc would have no trouble in doing so (I stated that there still existed Royal Yacht clubs in several Republics, namely India, South Africa, and the Republic of Ireland, which was noted).
The other class of societies represented were Singapore “branches” of international bodies such as the Royal and Ancient Order of Buffaloes, and the Royal Alexandra Chest Clinic… and the Registrar said the prime minister would have no difficulty over them retaining “Royal”. It should be noted there are not many “Royal” yacht clubs that had or have the Queen herself as Patron. The special general meeting held on 6 January 1967 approved the change of name to Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, which was deemed to take effect from 1 January 1967 on which date HM The Queen was deemed to have ceased to be patron. The Registrar approved the draft change of rules on 29 December 1966 and the change of name and rules on 19 January 1967 following ratification at the SGM. It took a while to hold and judge a competition for a change of emblems. Sheila Snowden submitted the winning design in which the then similarly shaped outline of the island replaced the lozenge of the Straits Settlements and the Merlion replaced the crown. The new emblems were approved by
the Registrar on 24 June 1967. President Yusof bin Ishak died in office on 23 November 1970. There is evidence in the Club’s archives that President Benjamin Sheares may have been patron correspondence dated 1973-1982 regarding presidential patronage of the RSYC includes a copy of a letter from Jack Snowden to President Sheares dated 10 December 1973. It is clear, however, that in the difficult years which followed, the Club lacked the confidence to seek the patronage of succeeding presidents until April 1984, when Francis Lee suggested, in a planning subcommittee meeting, that the president might agree to become the Club’s patron. This was ultimately achieved when President Ong Teng Cheong accepted the Club’s invitation to become patron on 16 June 1997. He later graced the official opening of the new Club on 17 June 2000. He was succeeded as patron by President S R Nathan on 23 April 2003. The Club is immensely proud of this unique, distinction of having the president as its patron. Excerpt from Three Burgees, History of The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, written by Peter Dunlop.
A toast at the dinner after the RSYC Regatta on 8 June 1975 with the burgee of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club in the background and the Lipton Cup on the table.

TO O & ME PE G M N U B ES ER TS S The Mid-Autumn Festival – also known as the Mooncake Festival – is a thousand year-old Chinese tradition that dates back to a time when farmers thanked the Moon Goddess for an abundant harvest. Feast on a variety of dishes specialty prepared for you which includes a range of Nonya, Japanese and Indian dishes plus many more… Children can join in the traditional lantern walk while mummies and daddies relax and enjoy their meal! PROFILE
Francis Yeo on the Dolphin Explorer – one of the three boats he has berthing at RSYC.
AN INTREPID & INQUISITIVE EXPLORER A familiar face to members at the Club, particularly so for the boating community here at RSYC, Francis Yeo, 37, began his kinship with the open waters at a tender age of 8, when he tagged along with his father on fishing trips from the Jalan Buroh clubhouse. Reminiscing the early days, Francis recalls the rushing of water as the watergates near the clubhouse were opened to let out the excess water; and the many occasions when he and his mates casted nets to catch prawns and small fishes. Francis also vividly remembers the swimming pool at the old clubhouse, especially the scratches one would get treading on the “not-so-smooth” concrete surfaces around the pool. Gone are the carefree days of childhood.

A certified diver to diving instructor trainer and a dedicated businessman, Francis, who has been a corporate member since 1999, also shared that he used to have a shop dealing in scuba diving equipment here at the Club. Building on his passion for the seas and the sport of diving, he has since diversified his business, and these days, Francis is kept busy running multiple businesses in Singapore and abroad – ranging from boat charters on government research projects for NParks, NUS & NTU in restricted waters of Singapore, a scuba diving school, diving equipment supplies and even a pub along Jalan Klapa. More recently, he is awaiting to receive his new 20-metre boat, that’s currently being built in Batam. As a long-time member, Francis, whose father and several family members are also members of RSYC, shares that he wishes to see the Club prosper and develop into a more vibrant place for all members.

SISTERS’ ISLANDS MARINE PARK ESTABLISHING SINGAPORE’S FIRST MARINE PARK Spanning about 40 hectares around Sisters’ Islands and along the western reefs of both St John’s Island and Pulau Tekukor, the Sisters’ Islands Marine Park will be a platform for outreach, educational, conservation and research activities related to our native marine biodiversity. The location was chosen due to its variety of habitats including coral reefs, sandy shores and seagrass areas. This new initiative aims to give Singaporeans a first-hand experience of our rich biodiversity, which are submerged most of the time. The Sisters’ Islands Marine Park will protect Singapore’s coral reefs, which support an ecosystem inhabited by rare and endangered species of seahorses, clams, sponges and other marine life. More than 250 species of hard corals can be found in Singapore’s waters out of over 500 species within the region. Being located in close proximity to one of
the world’s busiest ports, the Marine Park will provide a safe refuge for the teeming biodiversity around the Southern Islands and its surrounding waters, as well as safeguard our natural heritage. Research activities at the Marine Park will expand our knowledge and understanding of Singapore’s existing marine habitats and biodiversity. Marine scientists and researchers can look forward to more opportunities to conduct a wide range of in-depth studies and regular monitoring on Singapore’s marine environment. Restoration activities including nurseries for iconic marine organisms are also part of the enhancement efforts to be carried out at the Marine Park. One of the species, which will benefit is the Neptune’s Cup Sponge (Cliona patera), thought to be globally extinct for more than 100 years until it was rediscovered off Singapore’s coast in 2011.
SAFETY@SEA WORKSHOP FOR PLEASURE BOATING BY MPA Launched on 31 July 2014, the Safety@Sea Singapore campaign is led by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and is an industry-wide effort to increase awareness of safe practices and inculcate a safety-first culture at sea. As part of the Safety@Sea Week from 17 to 21 August 2015 and as an ongoing effort for the Safety@Sea Singapore campaign, the MPA held a Safety@Sea Workshop for Pleasure Boating at RSYC on 17 August 2015. The workshop was attended by industry players and representatives from various yacht clubs. Attendees were presented with a refresher on the importance of safety at sea; and had the opportunity to interact with one another to gather fresh ideas and viewpoints on the topic. BIODIVERSITY Singapore’s waters are home to: • More than 250 species of hard corals (32% of hard coral species found worldwide) • More than 100 species of reef fish • About 200 species of sponges • 12 seagrass species THINGS TO DO: INTRODUCTORY GUIDED WALKS AT SISTERS’ ISLANDS MARINE PARK The intertidal area at Sisters’ Islands Marine Park is most suitable for visiting during low tides of 0.4 metres and below. That is when you will be able to see the teeming marine life. At higher tides, the area will be submerged under water. Nature guides will be at hand to bring you on a tour to experience the Marine Park’s amazing biodiversity. These guided walks are conducted free of charge and each guided walk session is open to a maximum of 45 people. SEA SPORTS
RSYC SAILING PROGRAMME aspects – Education and Sports. As the Club is revamping its sailing courses, the Club will constantly try to evolve this programme in a way which develops an activity that mutually benefits the Club, its members, the sailing community and the participants.
INTRODUCTION The RSYC Sailing Programme is targeted at educating participants from the age of 13 onwards to teach the basic knowledge of the environment, the sea, the weather, and various aspects of the sport of sailing through a three-day interactive programme and hands-on activities. The Sailing Programme – also open to all secondary school students – aims to introduce basic sailing and boat handling skills, geography, science, water safety and life skills in a fun, non-competitive way. PROGRAMME INFORMATION This introduction to sailing is a three (3) days programme, which can also be conducted in six (6) half-day sessions, and serves as a teaser to grow the interest of sailing at the Club. CONTENT & METHOD • Sailing is a powerful outdoor education tool, which can develop character life skills, as well as develop knowledge and concern about the natural environment. • In this Basic Sailing Programme, participants are exposed to environment – the sea, waves, coasts, wind and weather through hands-on activities. • They will be introduced to different types of sailboats; along with the physics and mechanics behind how sailboats work. • Participants will experience sailing in a 2-person sailboat – the Laser Pico! RSYC hopes to achieve a broad base of students taking up the programme; focusing on combining considerations in two distinct
EDUCATION The programme aims to promote the sport of sailing through the development of knowledge and concerns of the natural environment. These include understanding water safety, the environment, the weather, the tides and decision-making and so forth. It also develops important life skills such as leadership and teamwork in a hands-on environment. The Club believes that the qualities achieved through sailing will then help young people face the challenges of life. Through learning about the techniques of sailing, they will also be educated on the importance of safety. At the end of the three-day course, participants will: • Experience steering and controlling a boat as well as trimming sails to catch the wind. • Have a better understanding of the environment in which they live, the delicate nature of our planet and how we must treat it with respect for our future. • Have a better understanding of how the weather works, why the sun will shine or wind will blow, when to carry an umbrella and put on sunscreen. • Gain water wisdom and be able to tell their parents why the tide is low or high, when it is safe to swim and when the current is dangerous. • Have a better understanding of how the tides relate to the earth, moon, sun and the planets. • Learn how to care for themselves and their equipment. • Have acquired the principles of seamanship - to have respect for nature, as nature cannot be controlled. We can adapt and trim our sails and face any challenge that life presents. • Learn the importance of working in a team for success, taking charge and providing leadership of a group to collectively achieve success. Water safety is of utmost importance. Personal floatation devices (i.e. life jackets), helmet and covered footwear are compulsory for all sailing and other water-based activities. A power boat will also be on the water to cover safety for all water-based activities at all times.
