AT THE HELM

COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members, The average occupancy rate of our 60-room Marina Lodge for the last four to five months has not been very encouraging despite attractive discounted rates being offered to members and their invited guest. In March this year, the Club kicked off a members’ referral reward scheme as another initiative to boost room bookings. As owners of the Marina Lodge, it is in our interest to make sure this asset generates reasonable return for us. I urge all members to recommend Marina Lodge to their friends, business guests and associates whenever they require short term accommodation. For members who wish to spend their holidays with the family at RSYC, they can sign on special holiday weekend or weekday packages. Patronage at our F&B outlets particularly the Wharf could have been better if more members had visited the Club regularly for their meals. Our executive chef and his team have been working hard to attract more members to visit The Wharf and other F&B outlets by introduction of new dishes along with improvement on food and service quality. Members are also encouraged to utilize the Club’s banqueting facilities for their private functions as well as their companies’ events. On the Marina front, a boaters’ dialogue session was held on 15 January evening. Many positive feedbacks and good suggestions were received from the boating members present. The Marine Department has been working tirelessly on a list of priority tasks based on items discussed in the dialogue session. One of the major repair work carried out was the replacement of new manhole covers of the fuel tanks in the drystack area, where the uneven surface due to the temporary steel covers posed a hazard to forklift operations. Fuel dispensing pumps and fuel tanks level sensors have been were repaired. An electrical contractor was engaged to check the lighting circuits on the pontoon. Problems were identified and faults were rectified and the lighting on the pontoon was progressively

restored. Works on renewal of worn pile guides and damaged pile brackets are underway. Progress of the work is updated regularly through e-newsletter and on RSYC Facebook. The refurbishing of the Bridge and renovation of the Beacon bar are progressing as planned and are expected to be reopened as scheduled. Many of our members, including myself, are looking forward to the new dining and wining experience at these two outlets brought to us by the new operator. Application to MPA’s Committee for Marine Projects (COMET) for our Wave Screen Construction project was submitted in September 2014. COMET’s main concern was that the wave screen is very close to West Coast Pier (WCP) and the works may restrict/obstruct the approaching ferries to WCP. Since then RSYC Development Sub-Committee and our consultant engineer have met with secretariats of COMET and MPA engineers on several occasions to discuss the method statement, construction programme and other details relating to the wave screen. Final plan and method statement of wave screen construction were submitted to COMET for approval in principle on 6 April 2015. We are hoping the approval could be obtained by end April. In February this year, RSYC has become a member of ICOYC (International Council of Yacht Clubs), a council made up of leading yacht clubs in the world with history and tradition. As an ICOYC member, we will be able to reach out to excellent yacht clubs in the world to promote us as the oldest yacht club in Singapore. The membership will provide opportunity to develop friendships with other member clubs through exchange visits and discussion forum from which RSYC will be able to share experiences and learn the international best practice of marina management. We are pleased to announce that our new General Manager Mr Simon Tan, who came on board on 1 April 2015. Mr Simon Tan brings with him an impressive track record, comprising 28 years of diverse experience in F&B, hotel, spa resort, yacht club and marina operations in Singapore and abroad. RSYC Committee and management welcome

As we are coming close to the term end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my committee members for their contribution by giving their time and valuable expertise in guiding the management. I also want to thank all members for the support rendered to us; and the management team for their hard work and perseverance. AGM date has been set on Friday 12 June 2015, 7pm at the Quarterdeck. I would like to urge all voting members to come and attend the AGM; to give their views and feedback for running the Club better. For those who are willing to give their time and expertise, do consider serving in the main committee or various sub-committees. Lastly, I encourage all members to visit the Club as often as they can, patronize the Club’s F&B outlets, enjoy the facilities and to give constructive feedback on how the Club could improve to better its service and to gain more patronage from the members. GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE

Dear Club Members, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to all of you as I embark on my role as the Club’s new general manager. Since coming onboard, I have been assessing the various areas of need at the Club; and am now working on putting together a plan to optimize the Club’s resources while adding value to our products, services and activities. While changes are inevitable, I assure you all that it will be positive. My immediate focus will be to improve the F&B Department – from production right through to delivery, however, the importance of the meeting the needs of the general membership will not be neglected. It is with no doubt in my mind, that it is you – the members – who are the vital heartbeats of this Club; and to that end, members of this Club rightly deserve a clubhouse with the highest level of service and standards in all areas.

With that in mind, I would greatly appreciate if you could take some time to give me your valuable comments and feedback – be it positive or negative – on the various aspects of the Club. You can email your feedback to gm@rsyc.org.sg I feel humbly privileged to be given this role and fortunate to be granted an opportunity to grasp the winds of change, where I shall focus on what is required to improve on this already wonderful yacht club and make it a better place for all. I have had the chance to meet many of you in recent weeks; however I look forward to meeting more members in time. See you around the Club. Yours sincerely, SIMON TAN General Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

RECIPROCITY WITH ROYAL WELSH YACHT CLUB AND CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO RSYC has in recent weeks established reciprocity with the Royal Welsh Yacht Club and Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco. ROYAL WELSH YACHT CLUB Established in 1847 under the patronage of the Dowager Queen Adelaide, the widow of King William IV, the Royal Welsh Yacht

Club (RWYC) is a friendly, welcoming club with a varied programme of sailing, rowing, walking and social events throughout the year. The clubhouse is set within the town walls of medieval Caernarfon overlooking the Menai Straits, where members of reciprocal clubs, and recognised clubs under the Royal Yachting Association, are most welcome to call in and experience a warm Welsh welcome. With an active sailing and rowing fraternity, the RWYC organises cruises to destinations near and far, and hosts one of the many races on the Menai Straits. CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO Founded in 1886, Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC) of San Francisco maintains an active race calendar and a monthly cruise schedule, along with varied and imaginative entertainment activities for its members. Located at the foot of Main Street in scenic Tiburon, the clubhouse provides fine and casual dining opportunities for members and visitors alike, apart from being a popular venue for weddings and other private events.

5 MayJun2015_Rev7_Inside pages.indd 5

Membership consists of sailboaters, powerboaters, paddlers, and non-boaters – many of whom enjoy benefits such as social events, cruising and racing; while its sailing program introduces new fans to the sport every year. For more information about these clubs, please visit www.royalwelshyachtclub.org.uk or www.cyc.org

RSYC JOINS THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF YACHT CLUBS RSYC recently joined the International Council of Yacht Clubs (ICOYC) in February 2015, where members of this council are exclusively the leading yacht clubs in the various key yachting locations. These clubs have extensive experience that they can share – often in confidence with their peers – and they work together primarily through the worldwide ICOYC Commodores’ Forums and various other initiatives. We would also like to make a special mention to the winners of the Service Excellence program that was conducted from January till March 2015. The winners are none other than the familiar and friendly staff from our Wharf Restaurant – Winnie, Guna and Daniel. Happy birthday to the birthday babies and congratulations to all. THE ICOYC: THE LEADING YACHT CLUBS… WORKING TOGETHER… SHARING EXPERIENCE

T

he International Council of Yacht Clubs (ICOYC) has its origins in a 2003 symposium for Flag Officers held at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (RVYC). Realizing the value of continued international contacts, the RVYC hosted the first Commodores’ Forum in 2005, attended by representatives of yacht clubs around the world. In 2006, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club hosted the second Commodores’ Forum, attended by 28 clubs from all five continents. It was at this event that the ICOYC was officially established. Since then, international Commodores’ Forums have become regular events; the most recent, the ninth, was hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in February of this year.

schedule to take place in October around the Chesapeake Bay in the USA. In each case, the host club acts as an experienced guide and all are most welcome to attend. Membership of the ICOYC is by sponsored invitation to the leading clubs of the world in key yachting locations. An overall President, currently John McNeill of the St Francis Yacht Club, and a VicePresident for each main region, ensures that the ICOYC provides both global and regional perspectives to its members. For more information about ICOYC, please visit www.icoyc.org

The Council’s objectives are to identify common areas of interest and concern among member clubs and then to provide effective platforms for the sharing of ideas and experience about these topics in a persistent effort towards improvement for the clubs, their members and the sport. This is achieved through the use of contemporary communication tools and the organization of regular Forums and Regional Conferences. Wider fellowship and informal communications among member clubs is encouraged by participation in joint events such as interport regattas, youth exchanges and cruises. The most recent ICOYC Cruise was held following the Forum in New Zealand, and the next is

Ten members made their way to Sebana Cove, Malaysia, for a short getaway over the weekend of 11 and 12 April. Arriving at the destination, members quickly settled into the idyllic surroundings. Dinner was a “must have” seafood at one of the local restaurants, while “after dinner” activities included indulging in the thorny “king of fruits” – durians – and some pub-crawling! All in all, participants enjoyed the quick trip away from home.

MPA BRIEFING ON IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (AIS–B) TRANSPONDERS AND ELECTRONIC CHART SYSTEM (ECS) WEDNESDAY 15 APRIL 2015 Over 40 boat and jetski owners at RSYC availed themselves to a briefing session conducted by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Wednesday 15 April 2015, 6.30pm at the Nautica Room. This briefing session informed attendees and highlighted the necessary details with regards to the implementation of new Automatic Identification System (AIS–B) transponders and Electronic Chart System (ECS) on harbour and pleasure crafts to further enhance the safety and security of Singapore’s port waters.

RSYC boat and jetski owners at the briefing.

With this MPA-funded initiative, AIS-B transponders and ECS will be installed to replace the HARTS transponders. The installation of AIS-B and ECS will be mandatory under the licensing requirements of MPA’s Harbour And Pleasure Craft Regulations. The installation of about 3,500 AIS-B transponders on small harbour and pleasure crafts will be conducted in phases starting from June 2015 and is expected to be completed by December 2016. MPA staff conducting the briefing.

SAFETY AROUND PILES AT THE WET BERTH We would like to remind all members to be extra cautious when at the wet berth – particularly around the piles at the pontoon platforms. For your safety, the piles at the Fuel Dock have been marked in red and white (as shown on the right) to remind members to keep a safe distance away from the piles. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation. For more information, please do not hesitate to contact Marina Department at 67689233 or email to marina@rsyc.org.sg
