COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members,

proposal and would like to reiterate the salient points of the wave screen project as follows:

Sincere thanks to all fellow members who took time off their busy schedule to attend the recently concluded AGM; and thank you for giving me the opportunity to continue to serve you all as the Commodore of our esteemed Club. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing committee members – Mr James Wong and Mr Dioni Yong – who had graciously contributed their time and effort towards the development of the Club. Special thanks must go to outgoing Vice Commodore Mr John McGugan who has served over 14 in the RSYC Committee, five of which as Vice Commodore. Looking forward, RSYC is still facing many challenges this year in its operation especially in accommodation and F&B. As mentioned in my address to the members at the AGM, support from the members is absolutely critical to the well-being of RSYC as a Club. We urge members to support the Club by regularly patronizing its outlets, and promote Marina Lodge and function rooms to their friends and business associates whenever possible. DEVELOPMENT FOR RSYC’S FUTURE At the AGM, majority of voting members present at the meeting passed the resolution proposed by the committee. The resolution allows RSYC Committee to construct a 242 meter wave screen on the sea bed space acquired by RSYC in 2012; to build a new H/I berth and to re-configure J berth for berthing of larger yachts. The resolution also authorizes RSYC Committee to secure bank financing of up to S$6 million to finance the construction of the above. We thank all members who supported this

1. The construction of wave screen is inevitable for RSYC to preserve / prolong service life of the pontoons and piles in the Marina which are subject to constant pounding by waves generated from the ferry boats at West Coast Pier and from the surrounding water 2. The H/I and reconfigured J berth will increase our berthing capacity for larger yachts and are expected to bring additional income 3. The Club will have to secure a bank loan to finance this project and it will be able to repay the loan from the operation income within four years based on a most likely possible cash flow projection. RSYC land lease was a hot subject of discussion in the AGM. We understand an early grant of RSYC lease extension from the government will bring forth members’ and potential members’ confidence in future of the Club. The RSYC Committee would continue to pursue the lease extension discussion in multiple prong approach: 1. Initiate dialogue and lobby support from Sport Singapore, the lease title holder. RSYC is part of Singapore sports community and has been actively promoting sea sports, especially sailing in Singapore 2. Engage with West Coast Community by taking part in the community events to raise the profile of RSYC as a sports and recreation club in the area. 3. Work with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) in the development of sea sports for youths.

government’s support for lease extension. Another project that the Club will be embarking on is the tennis court on the rooftop of the Marina Lodge, where tennis enthusiasts can look forward to a game or two overlooking the marina. The Development Sub-Committee is currently working on the final details of this project and more information will be made available to members in due time. Once again, I encourage all members to support the Club by regularly visiting the Club, patronizing its F&B outlets, and joining in the events and activities that the staff have worked hard to organize. This is after all our Club, and its survival depends solely on us. I look forward to seeing you around the Club and at the SG50 Commodore’s Day Family Carnival 2015! GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE

Dear Club Members, As I come into my third month here at RSYC, I am thankful for the support rendered and feedback I have received from members I’ve spoken to. This has helped me to make improvements on the offerings, service standards and ambience of the Club. While enhancements have been made in several areas, there is still room for improvements in other areas and this will be in place in due time; and I greatly appreciate your patience and understanding. In the meantime, you can always send me any feedback you may have to gm@rsyc.org.sg SG50 COMMODORE’S DAY FAMILY CARNIVAL 2015 Upcoming in August, you can expect a big celebration at our SG50 Commodore’s Day Family Carnival slotted to take place on Sunday 2 August 2015. This will be a big bash where members, their families and their friends will celebrate the Club’s 15th anniversary here at the West Coast Clubhouse in conjunction with the nation’s 50th birthday. There will be lots of games and food stalls during the day plus a special display of exotic birds, sea sports rides and of course, water telematches for the fun-loving families. In the evening, members can look forward to a BBQ buffet dinner by the waterfront and enjoy a spectacular view of yachts, all “dressed up” for the night. See the inside front cover of the magazine for full details.

UPCOMING EVENTS The Sea Sports & Events Department is also working hard on several events that would interest members and guests alike. We are planning for a Boaters’ Night on Friday 4 September, where non-boaters are most welcome. Also in the pipeline, the ever-popular Oktoberfest and a Fishing Competition. Lookout for more details soon on the Club’s website and Facebook page. SEA SPORTS ACTIVITIES & YACHT CHARTERS Apart from events, the Club will also be re-launching its Sea Sports Academy in August 2015, where aspiring sailors or boaters can join in courses on sailing and crewing. PPCDL courses will also be offered with smaller class sizes on most weekends starting August. The Club is also working on offering yacht charters for non-boating members to experience the boating lifestyle. For details, please contact our Sea Sports & Events Department at 6768 9491 or email to seasports@rsyc.org.sg FOOD & BEVERAGE Do make a date with us on Sunday 27 July for a Steamboat Dinner Buffet and on Sunday 9 August for our National Day Hawker Fare Buffet. As part of our ongoing efforts to provide variety in our offerings, members can also look forward to Ala Carte Bak Kut Teh every Monday to Thursday and our Teochew Porridge Semi-Buffet on every Friday at The Wharf. Do make your reservations early to avoid disappointment.

3

In closing, I would like to wish all our Muslim members a Happy Hari Raya Aidilfitri this July and all members a Happy National Day 2015! See you around the Club and at the SG50 Commodore’s Day Family Carnival 2015! Yours sincerely, SIMON TAN General Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

STAYING IN SINGAPORE WITH A DIFFERENCE Go to any of the hotel booking sites and you will see hundreds of hotels listed in Singapore, of all classes and prices, all much of a muchness. But looking for something different, unusual that stands out? Let me tell you about my favourite place to stay in Singapore, the grandly entitled ‘The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club’ which in fact is much more down to earth and visitor friendly than its title indicates.

business, I like being by the sea and I don’t like ice-cold airconditioned reception and dining areas, preferring shaded openair areas with natural ventilation. This where RSYC excels with its airy open reception area, which leads through to an informal dining area that overlooks the marina. The large swimming pool is one of the Club’s key features, together with a well-equipped gym, there is no excuse for not keeping fit and a stroll on the marina pontoons as the sun goes down is one of my most pleasant evening activities before retreating to the Beacon Bar.

Situated on Singapore’s west coast, the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) has an impressive heritage; the Club can trace its line back to 1826 when it was formed, just seven years after Sir Stamford Raffles’ arrival in Singapore. However if you are worried about your accommodation being like an old square-rigged sailing ship with a hammock swinging from the deck head don’t worry, the latest Club premises, completed in 1999, combine a nautical twist with sixty contemporary furnished airconditioned en suite rooms.

RSYC offers competitive room rates, which include breakfast and free Wi-Fi. Meals are very attractively priced with both Western and Asian specialities on the menu. On a recent visit I enjoyed the spicy seafood spaghetti so much I had it four times in a week although I had reduced chillies after the first time! If you like being by the sea and receiving friendly, but not pandering service from the excellent staff, RSYC is the place for you!

As a regular traveller to Singapore I have been staying at the Club since the start of the new millennium, often three or four times a year and it’s my preferred venue. Being in the boating

90TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

H

onorary Secretary Ms Inez Wei called the 90th Annual General Meeting to order at the Quarterdeck on Friday 12 June 2015, with 54 members in attendance at 7.30pm, and proceeded with a formal introduction of the committee of the day. At a special request, the main highlight of the meeting – the resolution to construct a wave screen, H/I berths and the reconfiguration of berth J – was brought forward and discussed much earlier in the meeting. Although several members voiced their concerns about the feasibility and the potential returns of the project, considering the approaching end of lease in 2027, majority of the members in attendance voted in favour of passing the resolution, after much deliberation and discourse. The voting

results for the resolution were as follows: • For - 46 votes • Against - 10 votes • Abstain - 3 votes

COMMODORE’S ADDRESS In his opening address, Commodore Wee Keng Hwee began by thanking all members who attended the Annual General Meeting. Acknowledging the various challenges that are facing the club, Commodore Wee assured members that under the leadership of the new General Manager Mr Simon Tan, the Club is geared for improvements, especially in areas of revenue generation for accommodation and F&B. Commodore Wee highlighted to the assembly that apart from the stable operations at the marina, sea sports activities would be revived in the very near future; and that members can look forward to more events at the Club. Emphasizing greatly during the meeting, Commodore Wee reminded attendees that support from members is absolutely critical to the well-being of RSYC as a club; thus urging members to support the Club by regularly patronizing its outlets, and promoting its services such as the Marina Lodge and function rooms to their counterparts. This will help in sustaining the financial stability of the Club and put it in

good stead for future developments. Commodore Wee added that constructive feedback and suggestions from members are important in guiding the RSYC Committee and management towards making the Club a better place for members and their families. Members are also encouraged to step forward and volunteer their time and expertise to the Club by serving in the committee or sub-committees. Before ending his address, Commodore Wee stated his appreciation to all committee members for their time and contribution to the RSYC Committee and the Club. Special thanks went to outgoing committee members Mr James Wong and Mr Dioni Yong; along with outgoing Vice Commodore John McGugan, who had tirelessly served

and much needed for continuation of RSYC as a marina. Member Mr Edward Wong believes that putting in effort in renewing the marina is essential and the income from it will tremendously help the Club; while member Mr CK Sum, who specializes in building pontoons, has agreed to step forward to contribute his time and expertise in the project. in the committee for 14 years, including five years as Vice Commodore.

WAVE SCREEN CONSTRUCTION Based on documents posted to members on 25 May 2015, the discussion to adopt the resolution to construct a wave screen, H/I berths and the re-configuration of berth J, commenced with much interest at the AGM. Heading the project, Commodore Wee, who is also chairman of the Development Sub-Committee, presented to the assembly the background of the project, the current situation at the pontoons, the cost estimates and the projected financial returns after the construction is completed. Concerned members brought up various aspects of the project and although some felt that the projected financial returns were overly aggressive, many agreed that the construction of the wave screen is inevitable

However, member Mr Tng Kim Choon also pointed out that a separate meeting needs to be called, specifically to discuss the project. In addressing concerns over the looming expiration of ourland lease, member Mr Jimmy Khoo, reiterated the government’s plans of shifting port activities to Tuas, while developing the Club’s vicinity to recreational and residential areas.

and Mr Francis Yeo. By way of constitution, Mr Francis Yeo, a corporate member, was not allowed to contest, while the remaining candidates were put to a vote by the attendees for the seven seats. The Management, in the presence of two scrutinisers, tabulated the votes and the following candidates were voted into the incoming RSYC Committee: 1. Charlie Chan (29 votes) 2. Jeremy Cher (37 votes) 3. Albert Fong (27 votes) 4. Nigel Ho (40 votes) 5. Avinash Kadam (40 votes) 6. Anthony Montague (37 votes) 7. Gavin Raj (32 votes) The meeting was called to end at 10.08pm and attendees adjourned to the Nautica Room for refreshments.

ELECTED COMMITTEE FOR 2015/2016 The five flag officers positions were uncontested; and while three members have stepped down, the Annual General Meeting saw seven new applications from members to sit in the incoming RSYC Committee – namely Mr Nigel Ho, Mr Avinash Kadam, Mr Laurence Mackerroy Kok, Mr Lee Toi Yong, Mr Anthony Montague, Mr Gavin Raj

FITNESS Q&A WITH ROBIN LIM Q: How long should people rest in between workouts? A: In weight training, the rest period per set depends on your fitness and strength. Usually, it’s about 30 seconds to 3 minutes. If you rest too long, the muscles will get “cold”. Q: Is it a good idea to work out when one is feeling mentally stressed? Why or why not? A: It is not advisable for one to work out when stressed, however one could go for a walk instead. Q: What precautions should seniors take into considerations when starting a new workout regime? A: Seniors should consult and get proper medical clearance from a doctor. If one is on medication (for example high blood pressure), the duration of workout should range from 15 minutes to 40 minutes, at 40% to 70% of your heart ratio.

Q: Besides working out, are there any simpler things that one can do to lose some weight? A: Yes, one should check one’s basal metabolic rate, eat less and use a metabolic booster supplement. Q: How frequently should one change his or her workout regime? A: How frequently one should change his or her workout regime, depends on what his or her goals are. Q: Should one do cardio or weight training first? A: If one does weight training first, one will not be able to get an effective cardio training, for example a good timing for the 2.4km run. Q: What are some of the common mistakes, which one makes in the gym? A: Some of the common mistakes in the gym are standing posture and alignment.

WINES OF THE MONTH FOR JULY & AUGUST

CASTELLO BANFI

ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY

Owned by the Mariani family, Banfi is one of the leading companies in Italy, both for production and distribution of high quality wine. Production mainly comes from two regions – Castello Banfi Estate and Vigne Regali Estate. The wines of Castello Banfi are characterized by premier quality and expression of terroir. They are the fruit of the estate’s vineyards, carefully planted to harmonize individual microclimate with the optimal grape varietal.

For over 40 years, Robert Mondavi Winery has been the symbol of Napa Valley. Founded in 1966, it was the first major winery built in Napa Valley and went on to establish the foundation for modern winemaking in California. The goal of Robert Mondavi Winery has always been to produce wines that stand in the company of the greatest wines of the world.

Robert Mondavi, Twin Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Castello Banfi Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Ruby red, young and intense, this wine presents a fresh varietal, enriched with notes of spices, raspberries and plums. Full, soft and balanced yet easy to drink.

Castello Banfi Chardonnay 2013 Straw yellow with fresh green reflections, this chardonnay is fruity, fragrant and harmonious; with fresh floral, full body and appropriately acidic.

Deep flavors of blackberry lend a nice balance, with a sweet, toasty finish. Aromas of dried cherries and notes of rich cedar wood is characteristic of this Cabernet Sauvignon.

Robert Mondavi, Twin Oaks Chardonnay 2011 This 2009 Chardonnay reveals an elegant sophistication on the nose with aromas of green apples and a floral undertone. The mouth-filling palate creates a lush impression of baked apples and cinnamon, ending in a rich oak finish.

On the way to Tanjong Kampong Balang.

RSYC RENDEZVOUS TO PULAU TINGGI DAY 1 In the recent rendezvous to Pulau Tinggi, a total of 36 members and guests made their way down for a 4-day-3-night getaway at the TAd Marine Resort at Pulau Tinggi from 30 May to 2 June 2015. Immigration was cleared at Tanjong Pengelih / Penggarang within 30 minutes and some of the boaters took a short break at the restaurant, which served local delights. Snacks were bought at the local provision shop to help stave off cravings along the remaining of the journey. Although one of the boats faced an unfortunate system fault on its engines after passing through Lima Channel, the overall journey was smooth sailing and took us approximately seven hours.

DAY 2 One of the activities, which we all looked forward to, was the two-hour snorkeling

trip at Pulau Mentinggi. Beautiful fishes and an abundant of reefs and corals greeted us as we enter the ever-inviting waters. Shortly after lunch, half of the convoy visited the nearby local Malay village – Tanjong Kampong Balang – for fresh Kelapa Pandan (coconut juice) and Chendol, a popular Malaysian dessert – while the other half went to a private beach located west of the resort for a picnic and some fishing. In the evening, we had a BBQ dinner, which was specially arranged for us by the resort. Mr David Liaw graciously treated us to the Ikan Sagai (Trevally), which he caught earlier that afternoon.

DAY 3 The children went for a dip in the pool while the boaters took turns to refuel and prepare for the voyage back to Singapore the very next day. After all was done, the fishing enthusiasts went out for yet another round of fishing and a handful of us went back to the

private beach.

DAY 4 Two out of the entire convoy bid farewell to Pulau Tinggi at 6am while the rest left at 9am. As we passed by Lima Channel, a capsized tanker, which we initially spotted on Day 1, was still there. On behalf of the Club, we would like to thank our Sea Sports & Events SubCommittee Chairman, Mr Jeremy Cher for heading this trip. We would also like to thank the members who took time off their busy schedule to join us for this fruitful trip. Special thanks go to Mr James Wong for having us on board his lovely boat. LET’S LEARN TO COOK 3, 4 & 5 JUNE 2015

Dear Uncle Huzaini, I spent the first week of June holidays having fun at your cooking class. Unlike other cooking classes; this time round, mummy was not with me. I learnt to cook many dishes from the instructor. I learnt to cut garlic, wash rice, fry eggs, noodles and even bake egg tarts. I wish to go for more cooking classes at RSYC again! Thank you very much.

FAMILY FISH FARM TOUR Fourteen members and guests made their way to the Club on the morning of Sunday 21 June 2015 to visit a Barramundi Fish Farm located off Semakau Island. Participants were briefed before setting off on a ferry from the pier adjacent to RSYC. At the farm, participants learnt of the various areas of the farm, its breeding and harvesting process; and had the opportunity feed the fishes up close. After approximately an hour of touring the farm, participants headed back to the Club where a sumptuous barramundi fish lunch – Sweet & Sour, Cream Sauce and Steamed Hong Kong Style – awaited them at The Wharf. They also had the opportunity to purchase some barramundi to take home while at the Club. If you are interested to join in for the next fish farm tour on Sunday 27 September, please drop us an email at events@rsyc.org. sg
