VICE-COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members of RSYC It gives me great pleasure to write to you in the capacity of Vice Commodore for the 2013/14 season. As some of you may know, my first passion is marine and boating. This year I have agreed to head the Marine Sub-Committee in its efforts to support our marina management as they try to provide worldclass service to our boat-owning members and we try to live up to our motto of being Asia’s friendliest marina. As mentioned in our last magazine by our Commodore, the Club’s facilities such as the dry stack is up and running, and the room expansion project is nearly completed. Meanwhile we continue to refurbish and upgrade the wet berth arrangements and try to come to an acceptable way to finance a breakwater. We now turn our attention to the soft skills aspect of the Club. Commodore mentioned our “Members1st” program which will aim to add value to the membership of RSYC by putting our members at the forefront of training and development of our management and staff. We are progressing well in the selection of a new general manager that we hope will have more of a “people management” skill-set rather than just an F&B or hotel background. We believe that this is essential if we are to succeed in improving our service levels and bring true meaning to the phrase “Members1st”. Members are encouraged to share their ideas and feedback as we make the
necessary changes to achieve this. Let me pose a question to each one of you: What does “Members1st” mean to you? Please feel free to send your thoughts, comments or suggestions to the RSYC Committee through our executive secretary, Anne Mah. My other passion at RSYC is our club heritage and after a long break following the completion of the Club’s heritage book “Three Burgees”, I am pleased to announce that the Club intends to follow up on the Government’s offer to contribute to national heritage initiatives by way of grants to pay for significant projects that add to Singapore’s rich heritage as the Nation approaches 50 years of independence. I would like to thank member Wayne Wong for sending us the media release on the Government’s initiative that we are now following up on. We hope that our plans meet the requirements stipulated by the National Heritage Board.
I look forward to seeing you around the Club in the weeks and months ahead. John McGugan Vice Commodore Republic of Singapore Yacht Club
Please read future magazines for more details of progress with this and other exciting heritage initiatives that we have planned, including a RSYC time capsule that will focus on the Club’s own preparations for our bicentennial. The 2013/14 term should prove to be an extremely exciting year as we focus on the “software” and not just the “hardware” of the Club. Finally, may I urge you to give strong support to the Club’s upcoming events such as the Oktoberfest fun night, the Diwali celebrations and the annual Charity Cruise for some disadvantaged children.

The next big Club event is the New Year’s Eve “Countdown Party” on 31 December as we ring in the New Year. Let’s make it a great one, together; let’s hear your suggestions, too.
A Gentle Reminder
Finalisation of Sub-Committee members is on-going at press-time and we hope to publish their names when the full list becomes available. Meanwhile, the full list will be posted on the Club’s notice board in the coming weeks.
Keeping the Tradition
We need to remind members that they should bring their membership cards when visiting the Club and patronising our F&B outlets. There have been a few occasions when an issue arises over proper identification. Should a member be without a card, he or she can obtain a temporary one from our Membership Department through the Reception Counter staff.

Exchange of Burgees
On 5 July 2013 we exchanged burgees with the Real Club Astir de Regatas of Spain when their member Mr Jose Antonio Rodriguez visited our Club and met with our Treasurer Mr David Cronin.
Piles at Pontoon under repair
A few piles at the far end of the pontoon suffered some damage recently, and repairs were carried out by a local company, Antara Koh, from 19 August. FROM THE EDITOR
We pulled through the 14th annual RSYC Regatta last July and early August with 14 entries for the main races and 15 boats in the Sailability event for sailors with disabilities. Thanks to the small band of hard-working staff, headed by Marina and Sea Sports Manager Foo Say Juan, and some volunteer young sailors from the NTU Yacht Club of Nanyang Technological University, the traditional event was successfully concluded with a rousing prize-giving dinner on 3 August. Clearly, the organizing committee for future regattas have to be formed very much earlier.

As we approach the last quarter of 2013, publicity must be given to the other major regatta that’s coming up. I refer to the 20th annual Singapore Straits Regatta (SSR) that will be held from 14 to 18 January 2014 on both Singapore and Indonesian waters. Shortly after its inception in 1995, the SSR had RSYC join the group of local sailing clubs in supporting this major yachting event that is sanctioned by the Singapore Sailing Federation. Surely 20 continuous years of yachting is something to celebrate, so let’s get behind this event and make it a memorable one. Of course, the SSR is nothing compared to the granddaddy of world yachting races that is held every three years: the America’s Cup. And that’s being held this year this September in San Francisco, with the Emirates Team NZ of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron challenging the defending champions Oracle Team USA of the Golden Gate Yacht Club. Coming back to home events, I hope many of you will be joining in for the Oktoberfest fun-night on Friday 6 September at the Nautica Room. Your favourite band – the Swiss Alpine Lions – will be in attendance again. A great evening of beer-drinking, specially-prepared German food, and loads of fun and games await you. Never too late to sign up! Just call our Events Dept at 6768 9333 or email to events@rsyc.org.sg.

Later on in the year, we have an event that’s still in the making, at presstime. I refer to the annual Charity Cruise which has been tentatively set for Saturday 23 November, when our members take a bunch of active children, ages from about 12 to 16 years, from a couple of children’s homes, for a day’s outing and picnic lunch at Pulau Hantu. You can volunteer with contributions in kind, or if you own a boat or jet-skis, you can also participate. We already have one boat owner offering his motor-yacht as the main supply boat. For more information on how you can participate, please email Joel Gwee, our new Events Manager at joel.gwee@rsyc.org.sg. We get feedback from time to time. Recently I received one from a long-time member Mr Wayne Wong who spoke at the recent AGM. Referring to my report in the July/August 2013 issue, Mr Wong wrote to clarify the point he made at the AGM, that “Committee members change from year to year, and by not inviting past year’s sub-committee members to continue to serve in subsequent years’ sub-committees, such omissions (according to him) fail to ensure any continuity in carrying out Club’s planned programmes.” I can only say that it is usually the Committee or the Sub-Committee chairmen’s prerogative to invite members to serve on the various SCs. The names of the chairmen of the five SCs are published under Club News as soon as they are announced, and members interested to serve could contact them directly or through the Club. One final note on Club communications: email addresses of most Club staff are being changed from this month onwards, to using their own names followed by “…@rsyc.org.sg”. Hope this will lead to better communications. Looking forward to hearing from you, and to seeing you more often at the Club. K.C. Yuen Editor, RSYC Magazine kc.yuen@rsyc.org.sg

Sea Bass, the winning yacht in IRC A Class. The 14th annual RSYC Regatta was held on two weekends – 27 to 28 July and 3 August 2013. A total of 14 boats took part in this year’s races, with five boats in the IRC A class, four in the IRC B and five in the J24. The races were of varying conditions, ranging from strong to light winds and different currents, forcing the skippers to use different tactics and bringing out their best sailing skills. In the IRC A, Jon Cray’s Sea Bass managed to hold their first place throughout the regatta, even with Shoon Fung Too and Waka Tere who have lower ratings in their class. Being very consistent in their races, Sea Bass’ string of second place finish for each race put them at the top of the leadership board with 13 points. Close behind was Shoon Fung Too with 13 points, and Waka Tere in third place with 14 points. In the IRC B, SMUve helmed by Calvin Lim took home the challenge trophy with five bullets, finishing off the regatta with a brilliant 7 points. Having retired from the passage race on Day One, SMUmad helmed by Samuel Ong took no chances with the remaining races. His second place finishes in the races put him at 10 points after one discard, in front of O’Blu Eyes with 17 points.
In the J24 class, positions were predictable in the first four races of the regatta, with Angel coming in first, followed by Shengli, Jangan Main Main, RSYC Dua and RSYC Satu. The results seemed to be a foregone conclusion from Day Two of the regatta. Things took a turn on the last day, with shuffling in the finish positions as RSYC Dua improved in their results. Racing was close on the final day among the J24 fleet, with much at stake, right down to the last race. Finishing the regatta with a 3, 2, 2 in the last three races, RSYC Dua and Jangan Main Main were tied at 19 points. On countback, RSYC Dua was 2nd runner-up with their 2nd place finish. Angel helmed by Vladimir Borstnar won the championship trophy with a total of 6 points, followed by Shengli with 11 points and RSYC Dua with 19 points. The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club would like to thank all the skippers and sailors for making this annual event possible. To the sponsors and supporters for being part of this regatta in one way or another, and to the race committee and officials and volunteers, a very special thank you. Looking forward to seeing you all again next year!

Jovin Tan Retains Sailability Title The 14th RSYC Regatta 2013 was staged off the waters of West Coast from 27 to 28 July. This year the one design Access Dinghy Class has attracted 15 boats with sailors of different disabilities. The event, comprising two days of quality racing, was filled with lots of entertainment both on and off the water with close racing taking place amongst the sailors. The winds were moderate in the range 6 to 10 knots with waves up to half a meter, making it challenging for the sailors at sea, off West Coast Park.
10
This event is an important regatta for the disabled sailors because the selections for the Asian Para-Games in South Korea are determined by how well they perform during the RSYC Regatta. After 10 intense races, Jovin had a successful regatta yet again as he claimed victory in the initial five races plus two 2nd placings and two 3rd placings to retain his title with 12 points overall. Five points behind is Qian Yin finishing in second place and Wai Yuan was in third place with 5 points.

RECENT EVENTS
Bendemeer Secondary School Sailing Program It was on Friday 19 July 2013, as 13 Bendemeer Secondary School students sat attentively to the briefing for the day's session. The boys were at Pandan Reservoir to learn sailing from coaches and national sailors, Jovina and Daniella from Nanyang Technological University. Spanning a total of four sessions, the program will cover areas including boat rigging, tying sailing knots and of course, the basics of sailing and steering a dinghy. The students have shown great enthusiasm, teamwork and have always turned up for the sessions with smiling faces. As there is one more session to go, the boys are both excited to showcase their sailing skills, but are disappointed that this sailing program is coming to an end. Jovina Choo
