AT THE HELM
COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members of RSYC Our Dry Berth Stacker Building was completed last year in May 2012 and is now fast filling up with boats. It is expected that our Accommodation Wing will also be completed sometime in June 2013. This will complete some of the task of rebuilding our yacht club. The next project on hand that the RSYC Committee will be looking at is to finish the one incomplete finger in the Wet Berth. We plan to do this shortly provided our finances allow us to do so. After the completion of this finger, we will then look at how we can improve the condition for boats berthed in our Wet Berth. For our current finances, please refer to the Financial Review on page 4. We will also need to seriously consider how we should manage the Club to bring us through especially after the year 2027, when our present lease will expire. The buzz in the Club these past few weeks was about the inaugural RSYC Boat Show that showcased some new and some pre-owned boats for sale. Feedback received was that it was not up to the standard as expected. I would agree that this feedback is as expected, as this was the first time that RSYC is doing such an event. We will aim to do better the next time around. It was a worthy first-time effort organized by the Club. We would appreciate your feedback on how we can make this an annual Club event for boaters to meet and exchange views.
Looking ahead, we have several noteworthy events coming up in May, June and July. First, I wish to highlight the Vesak Day Flotilla to Nongsa on 24 to 26 May. We expect a sizable fleet of power boats will join in. Participating boaters please note there will be a Skippers’ Briefing on Saturday 18 May for this event. Second, there is the traditional Commodore’s Day fun-fare on Sunday 9 June, a good time for family bonding during the coming school holidays. The kids especially will love to indulge in their favorite activities like jet-ski rides, and many more. Third, for the sailing enthusiasts, there is the 2013 RSYC Regatta in late July/ August. Here, I do want to make an appeal for volunteers who can spare some time to help the organizing committee. We have a relatively new team of keen staff, led by Marina Manager Foo Say Juan, a veteran in this industry. But this also means we are receptive to trying out fresh ideas; so do come and share with us. The coming months will also see some tough challenges ahead. As you are aware, the service industry especially is coping with the manpower crunch, and our club is no exception. We are currently evaluating the position of a general manager. The current RSYC Committee’s term will be ending soon, and I want to take this opportunity to thank all Committee members for the sacrifices they have
made in giving the Club their time and valuable expertise in helping to manage the Club through some difficult periods. I also want to thank all Members of RSYC for the support you have given us, and the Management and Staff for their hard work and loyalty over the years. The Annual General Meeting of RSYC is now fixed for Friday 21 June 2013 at 7.00pm. I hope you will make every effort to attend this important meeting and help set the direction your Club should take during the coming year. If you are interested to serve the Club, please write in indicating your interest. See you around the Club! With best wishes, Tan Kay Toh Commodore Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

Exchange of Burgees
On 8 April 2013 we exchanged burgee/ club plaque with the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club when one of their members Mr Bruno P.G. de Greysier, met with our Honorary Secretary Mr Balakrishnan B. Royal Gibraltar YC is one of the oldest yacht clubs in existence, having been established in 1829. Its new clubhouse on Coaling Island is currently under construction.
Some booths at the RSYC Boat Show.
We also had the pleasure of renewing our reciprocal relationship with the Royal Perth Yacht Club of Western Australia when their commodore, Mr Phil Mostyn and Mrs Mostyn visited us in mid-March and stayed at the Marina Lodge. Established in 1841, Royal Perth YC is the third oldest yacht club in Australia.
The Inaugural RSYC Boat Show
Coinciding with the staging of Boat Asia 2013 which ran from 18 to 21 April at another location, we held our very first RSYC Boat Show from 18 to 28 April. There were 19 boats on display, both on water as well as on land, some new but many were pre-owned and for sale. There were other boating participants, like Asia Power Boats and Kairos Yacht Charterers, offering boats for charter. For more pictures, see pages 6 and 7. Although a preview for specially invited guests and members was held during the weekend of 13-14 April, most of the public came on the following two weekends.

marine interests, like going out to sea with friends and families for the sheer pleasure of it. Maybe this boat show could become an annual event!
Participating at Boat Asia
As in past years, RSYC had a booth at Boat Asia 2013. It gives us an opportunity to showcase our new Dry Stack and answer enquiries from local and overseas visitors to this long-running annual boating event, some resulting in club memberships.
Annual Staff Party
The very busy month of April also gave the staff some respite from work. This year the annual dinner and dance for the staff was held on Tuesday 23 April at the Club. With a rock and roll theme, the party gave our staff a chance to let their hair down for a well-deserved break. It was a fun-filled evening for all, with lots of prizes and lucky draws.
Some visitors were enthusiasts, not only looking to own a boat, but had genuine

FROM THE EDITOR
Flotilla to Nongsa
An exciting event for boaters during the month of May is the Vesak Day Nongsa Flotilla during the long weekend of 24-26 May, as Friday the 24th is a public holiday. Details on this event can be found on page 9.
Marina Manager Foo Say Juan and his team have worked hard on this upcoming activity which should be loads of fun for all participants. Please note that there will be a mandatory Skippers’ Briefing on Saturday 18 May at 2.00pm.
Pulau Hantu Weekend Getaway
An event that had to be postponed from 17 March, will now be held on a date yet to be fixed, likely to be after the Nongsa outing. Please see details on page 8.
things to do, and a special menu from our F&B team. For details, please see page 11.
Update on the New Wing of Marina Lodge
As you can see in the picture taken on 21 April, the New Wing of the Marina Lodge is near completion. The new Accommodation rooms and suites should be ready for occupation sometime after June or July this year. Mahjong aficionados will get a ‘new home’ which, I understand, will move to the second floor of the new wing. There will also be a new Children’s Room, as the present one will make way for an enlarged Gym on Level One.
The 2013 RSYC Regatta
Traditionally held in the month of July, this annual event will be our 14th continuous regatta in the current series, started to commemorate the opening of our then new clubhouse. Organising the race details will begin in earnest this month. Only the dates – 26 to 28 July and 3 August – are firm, at this time of writing. Please contact Marina Manager Foo Say Juan who doubles up as Sea Sports Manager, if you can spare some time to be involved in the organizing committee for the Regatta. Cheers, and happy boating in the coming months! K.C. Yuen Editor, RSYC Magazine
This should also appeal to boaters, but non-boaters may join in, space permitting. Those interested may contact the Marine Department at 67689233, or email to marina@rsyc.org.sg for more information.
Commodore’s Day 2013
The month of June will see the big traditional family event – Commodore’s Day – with special activities for the children as well. So bring the kids to the Club on Sunday, 9 June for loads of fun

The idea was hatched sometime early this year when Marina Manager Foo Say Juan thought a boat show at RSYC could showcase some new and pre-owned boats for sale as well as bring visitors to our club to view the newly-opened Dry Stack. Added bonus could be some membership sales too! Several boat enthusiasts like Club member Mr Dioni Yong of Asia Power Boats pitched in, and the idea took shape in late February and early March. It became a reality when dates were fixed for 18 to 28 April, partly coinciding with the big established Boat Asia 2013 show held at another location. At the time of writing, the RSYC Boat Show was still on-going, with one more weekend to come! So far, scores of visitors came to the Club, mostly during the weekends of 13-14 April, when a preview
showing was held for specially invited guests and members, and 19-21 April, when it was open to the public. Even inclement weather on the afternoon of Sunday 21 April did not deter some families from coming to the event, as some of these pictures show. About 20 boats, both old and new, were on display on water and on land, along with several of the latest jet-skis available in the market. There were also about a dozen booths offering marine products like inflatable boats, marine equipment and accessories, and companies offering boat chartering services. Maybe with more time for planning and promotions, the event could evolve into an annual affair next year! This inaugural one in 2013 was a worthy ‘first-time ever’ event, and kudos to all organizers and participants.

RECENT EVENTS
RSYC at Boat Asia The 21st edition of Boat Asia was held from 18 to 21 April 2013 and once again at Marina at Keppel Bay. More than 30 yachts ranging from length of 6 metres to 50 metres were displayed both on and off the water. To maintain the Club’s presence in the boating industry, RSYC continued to have a booth at Boat Asia and the focus for this year was on filling up the dry berth. This year, the RSYC booth was located at the Super Yacht section and we had a number of visitors to the booth who showed some interest in the Club’s membership and berthing.

RECENT EVENTS
Annual Staff Party It was that one evening in the year – on 23 April 2013 – that the Club closed at 3pm and allowed the staff to have a grand time of fun and relaxation. And Commodore Tan Kay Toh was there, with Honorary Secretary Balakrishnan and Committee Member Tan Ann Kiong, to grace the occasion and present longservice awards to 12 staff for 5-Year Service, and to Dockhand Mohamed Bin Maideen for 15-Year Service. A 3-piece Rock & Roll band was in attendance and some staff took to dancefloor to show off their skills. The famous Dim Sum Dollies provided the entertainment. There were also many lucky draw prizes and no one went home empty-handed. Thank you to all RSYC Members and sponsors for a memorable evening.
