AT THE HELM

HONORARY SECRETARY’S MESSAGE Dear fellow members,

hard work of sailing enthusiasts, the Club’s fleet was revived and soon, dinghies, skiffs and Dragon Class yachts were featured in the races held every Sunday.

2016 commemorates the 190th anniversary of our illustrious club. Descended from the Singapore Yacht Club, it underwent another name-change before it became known as the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. Lest we forget, here’s a summary of the significant events of years gone by that have all earned its place of honor in the distinguished heritage of Singapore’s oldest club. 1826 : The Singapore Yacht Club was formed. W.H. Read, a Scottish merchant, served as Commodore for many years and through his efforts, sailing regattas became a local tradition, drawing large crowds to watch the races near what is now the heart of Singapore’s financial district. 1897 : Members of the Singapore Yacht Club became honorary members of the Singapore Rowing Club. The Singapore Yacht Club then became inactive. 1919 : A group of sailing enthusiasts which included W.F. Nutt, V.D. Knowles and W.M. Blake succeeded in reviving the Singapore Yacht Club and constructed a new seaside clubhouse at Trafalgar Street in Tanjong Pagar. 1921 : The Singapore Rowing Club was absorbed into the Singapore Yacht Club. 1922 : The Club hosted the Prince of Wales who agreed to become the Club’s first Royal Patron. Hence, the Club became known as the Royal Singapore Yacht Club. 1923 : Sir Thomas Lipton, the legendary yachtsman and tea merchant, donated the Lipton Cup to the Royal Singapore Yacht Club.

1952 : Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth became Patron of the Royal Singapore Yacht Club. 1956 : Several members of the Club represented Singapore in the Olympic Games in Melbourne. 1965 to 1966 : To make way for the new PSA container terminal in Tanjong Pagar, the Royal Singapore Yacht Club had to leave its Trafalgar Street clubhouse. The Club reclaimed some 5 acres of swamp-land near Sungei Pandan and built a new clubhouse which was officially opened by Singapore’s then-President, Yusof bin Ishak. 1967 : As Singapore had become a Republic in August 1965, the name of the Royal Singapore Yacht Club was changed to the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) to reflect the country’s new status. 1970s and 1980s : The Club’s access to the sea became restricted as land reclamation and construction works in the Sungei Pandan area intensified. As a result of these developments, the progress with our sailing programs was compromised. Early to mid-1990s : Through the efforts of the various committees of the Club, a new site was found. On the plot that became designated as 52 West Coast Ferry Road, a new clubhouse was built. 1997 : President Ong Teng Cheong became the Patron of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. 1999 : In August, the Club moved into the new clubhouse at 52 West Coast Ferry Road.

1937 : King George IV became Patron of the Royal Singapore Yacht Club.

2000 : The new clubhouse was officially opened on 17 June 2000 by Patron of the time, Ong Teng Cheong.

Post-War : The Trafalgar Street clubhouse was repaired and re-opened. Through the

On the same day, the Club was marked a historical site by the National Heritage Board

and a plaque to commemorate this grand status was unveiled. 2001 : Alfred Wong & Partners (who designed the new clubhouse) was presented with the prestigious design award (in the Recreational Category) given by the Singapore Institute of Architects. 2003 : President S.R. Nathan became the Patron of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. VOLVO was the title-sponsor for the 9th edition of the Singapore Straits Regatta of which the Republic of Singapore was the organizing chair. 2005 : His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco made a special visit to the Club to exchange burgees with our then-Commodore Tan Kay Toh to seal the reciprocal agreement made between the Yacht Club de Monaco and the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. 2006 : The Club played host to iconic sailor Ellen MacArthur when she sailed into our marina on her 75-ft trimaran as part of her solo circumnavigation of the globe which eventually saw her breaking the world record as the fastest. 2010 : “Three Burgees”, a hard-cover coffee-table book detailing the history of the

Much has changed in 190 years. But some things have not changed. We are still a member-owned club that is run by members, for members. While we need to adapt to changing needs and aspirations to stay relevant in today’s ever-changing landscape, we must not lose sight of our founding principles and core activities.

RAINBOW WARRIOR RETURNS Following the recent summit on global climate change, held at the 21st Annual Conference of Parties (COP21) at Le Bourget, north of Paris and the agreements reached among global leaders, many are now aware of the bleak repercussions should global climatic conditions continue to decline, and recognize the potentially irreversible threat to humanity and its habitat. In the forefront of environmental activism – Greenpeace – is an independent organisation that creatively and non-violently confronts and exposes global environmental problems, campaigning towards solutions that are cruicial to a greener and peaceful future. The Rainbow Warrior III – one of Greenpeace’s three ships (the other two are named the Arctic Sunrise and the Esperanza) – is a specially designed, environmentally friendly vessel to aid Greenpeace’s crusade to save planet Earth and protect the global commons. These ships are used at the front line of Greenpeace’s campaigns, often sailing to remote locations to bear witness and take action against environmental destruction.

HERITAGE

Being the supportive and generous members of the Club, the Wearne brothers, also donated a new Rowing Four, which was built and delivered from the United Kingdom in 1951. The rowing boat -- fully paid for by Theodore Wearne -- was unpacked on the lawn of the Trafalgar Street Clubhouse and presented to then-commodore Henry Worham, with the intention of giving it to RSYC’s very proficient Rowing Section.

THE BLACK SWAN TROPHY In the year 1926, two Australian brothers and members of the Singapore Yacht Club, Charlie Frederick Foster Wearne and Theodore James Benjamin Wearne – founders of Wearnes Automotive – commissioned and presented to the Club, the original Black Swan Trophy, a handsome memento in the form of a silver cigarette box. A new replica of the trophy was presented each year to the winner of the distance race for the largest yachts in the Club.

k Swan – tch – The Blac others. The 96-feet ke the Wearne br belonging to

The trophy was named Black Swan, after the brothers’ 96-foot ketch, which was built here in Singapore by Thorneycraft Shipyard at Tanjong Rhu with the help of their close friend and active member Merton Brown, who was also the General Manager of the shipyard.

Further to this, the Wearne brothers generously donated $1,200 in trustee status bonds, with capital appreciation to be accumulated for the Black Swan Trophy Fund-In-Trust -- the income of which was for RSYC to use in purchasing replicas of the original Black Swan Trophy for presentation to and retention by the race winner each year. THE RETURN OF THE BLACK SWAN Following a visit to Singapore back in 1995, one Mrs Margaret Grover from Scotland wrote to the Club with an offer the Club could not refuse. Mrs Grover had inherited a number of trophies from her uncle who was an active member of the Royal Singapore Yacht Club. One of those trophies in her collection was a 1935 replica of the Black Swan Trophy, which she had kindly offered to let the Club have. Replying to her letter, then Honorary Secretary JW Wilson, wrote that the Club would be “delighted to accept the donation”.

The Black Swan Trophy was also among the earliest trophies to be inscribed with the name "Royal Singapore Yacht Club" after the Club was extended the royal patronage when His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) became the Patron of the Club in 1922. Singapore Yacht Club then changed its name to the Royal Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC).

The inscription on the trophy stated that it was won by Ramona, presumably the winning yacht in which Mr Grover was a part of.

In 1928, the avid yachtsmen voyaged more than 10,000 miles to Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK via Australia, South Africa and the Mediterranean to take part in the Annual Cowes Regatta, where they were fortunate to be entertained on board the Royal Yacht Britannia – now a popular tourist attraction in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The 1935 replica of the Black Swan Trophy now takes its rightful place amongst the priceless trophies in the Club’s collection. The whereabouts of the original Black Swan Trophy remains unknown.

THE WEARNE-VOLVO CONNECTION

(2003), Hong Kong (2004) and Thailand (2005).

On 1 April 1906, the Wearne brothers – Charlie Frederick Foster Wearne and Theodore James Benjamin Wearne – founded the C.F.F. Wearne & Company at the back of their brother-in-law's house. The company – initially in the machinery trade – eventually progressed to becoming an automobile distributor agent for carmakers such as Rolls-Royce, Napier, Standard, Rover, Star, Renault, Siddeley Deasy and Dennis among others. The company was appointed the sole agent

In 2002, Volvo – synonymous with the sport of sailing – joined us as the main sponsor of RSYC Regatta. In the following year, when it was RSYC’s turn to take on the role of organizing chair for the Singapore Straits Regatta, Volvo again extended its support. Through its generosity, Volvo was given the naming right for the regatta in 2003, hence the name "VOLVO-SINGAPORE STRAITS REGATTA 2003".

for Ford cars in Singapore and Malaysia, and was later renamed Wearne Brothers Limited after it was publicly listed on 26 November 1912. In natural progression, the company acquired several automotive companies along with the brands they represented. The company attained the Volvo franchise through the acquisition of SM Motors in 2000, and expanded regionally through establishing dealerships in Malaysia

Excited participants boarding their assigned boats.

ANNUAL CHARITY CRUISE 2015

HEARTY CHEERS ALL AROUND Saturday 14 November concluded another successful Annual Charity Cruise with Canossaville Children's Home as this year’s beneficiary. The day began with volunteering members gathering at The Wharf for an early breakfast, before welcoming the children and staff from Canossaville Children’s Home at 9am. After the necessary briefing on safety guidelines and donning the requisite life jackets, the children and their chaperones were introduced to their assigned skippers and led to their designated boats. Many of the children were visibly thrilled and excited as they boarded their assigned boats. before heading off to Pulau Hantu. The natural setting of Pulau Hantu was a welcomed change for many of these youngsters as they wondered off to wet their feet at the lagoon and explored the island’s terrain. Before a sumptuous lunch was served, a fleet of jetskis “took the stage”, delighting the children on jetski rides around the lagoon. Post-lunch activities consisted of high-energy games and more jetski rides! After the lunch, games and rides, everyone packed and got ready to head back to the Club at 3pm, where yummy snacks and ice cream awaited them. Back in the Club, Events & Sea Sports Chairman thanked all volunteering members and staff for their contributions in making the event a success. Before parting ways, the children of Canossaville Children’s Home, gave an impromtu heart-warming acapella performance to show their appreciation to all involved. A big “thank you” goes to all members of RSYC who have stepped forward to contribute their time and resources to the event and helping make a positive difference in the lives of these deserving children.

The natural setting was a welcomed change in environment.

Jetski rides are always a hit with the children!

A HAWAIIAN REVELRY TO RING IN 2016

Ushering in a brand new year with big bang!

Judging from the excitement at the recent New Year's Eve Hawaiian Night Party, it's safe to conclude that the new year 2016 was ushered in with much gusto and zest by the "Hawaiian" party-goers that night.

rty d up to pa All dresseaway! the night

Apart from the eating and drinking, merrymaking and "letting the hair down" was on top of everyone's mind as the clock ticked past midnight and into a fresh new year. With lots of good cheer to go around, revellers were exceptionally sporting as Emcee Colin Seet went around for entertaining games. Many partied the night away while waiting for the Grand Prize of the customary lucky draw – an iPad Mini – to be picked after midnight.
