GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE

Dear Members, Firstly, I would like to thank all members and guests who came and supported the Easter Day Brunch on 1st April 2018. We saw a good turnout, tucking into the sumptuous brunch buffet with kids enjoying the fringe activities planned out for them. We also had a good discussion during Boaters' Dialogue Session on 6 April 2018 which enabled us to move the Marina and Yacht Club forward in the right direction. The Marine department will work towards the goal of implementing the standard of the Marina Industries Association by cleaning up the Marina in effort to create a safe and green environment for everyone and also re-painting fire reel boxes to make it more prominent for all boaters in case of emergency. We will also be promoting boatmanship and boating etiquette within and outside the Marina to our boaters. As you might have known, we have started works to extend our pontoon to accommodate bigger and prestigious yachts. The Marine department together with Membership department is actively sourcing for new boating members to fill up the newlybuilt superyacht berths. If you have any friends who are interested to berth their boats at RSYC, do call us at 6763 8234 or email to marine@rsyc.org.sg We are pleased to announce that we have introduced new merchandise umbrella, bath towel, pocket knife and suction stainless mug, alongside the usual best-selling polo shirt, RSYC cap and ties. Do refer to page 10 for the list of merchandise on sale at our lobby. The membership rewards programme

is still ongoing until 31 September 2018. We strongly encourage all members to recommend your friends/clients to join RSYC as a member and get rewarded! Signed up members will also get to enjoy the same benefits. Our maintenance team is currently doing re-painting works and upgrading the old wing of the marina lodge and fixing any dilapidating furniture. Other works include changing the lightings, curtains, carpet and bathroom. The project should be done in a few months. We seek the support from all members to stay in the marina lodge and take part in the on-going Marina Lodge Loyalty Programme by referring their guests or corporate clients to stay with us. We are excited to introduce a new dining concept at the restaurant located at Level 2 named 'La Pizzeria at The Bridge & Beacon Bar', an Italian restaurant that offers authentic Italian fired-baked pizzas and pasta made with hearty and fresh ingredients with time-honoured recipes passed down from the Italian Grandmother. Get your appetites ready and your heart stolen with every bite! Being a popular vantage point with a picturesque view, we will be hosting Club events such as our monthly member’s night and other event functions. Do drop by and support La Pizzeria at The Bridge & Beacon Bar! And finally, our 2018 Regatta is now underway in July and we are excited to bring this race to the Western Singapore again after a successful event last year. So sailors, do support this event and join Team RSYC to make it a success. Receive a free $30 voucher when you

Fleur De Passion

OCEAN MAPPING EXPEDITION A 33m-long Swiss expedition vessel Fleur de Passion, an old German World War II navy minesweeper which has been redesigned for scientific research, docked at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club from 13th to 25th March 2018. The Swiss expedition – led by Geneva-based organisation Fondation Pacifique - engaged in a 4-year journey around the world set sail from Seville, Spain in April 2015 and hopes to complete the journey by August 2019 in the wake of Ferdinand Magellan some 500 years after the first ever circumnavigation. The expedition combines science, education and culture to map human impact on the oceans and raise awareness about sustainable development issues, as well as social and educational integration. During her stay in Singapore, Fondation Pacifique had a press conference at RSYC on 14 March 2018 to raise awareness about the Wind of Change programme which monitor greenhouse gases and other scientific programs of the expedition on noise and micro-plastic pollution of the oceans and coral bleaching due to global warming. The expedition also encourages education initiatives such as The Youth at Sea educational programme, which invites young people to stay onboard Fleur de Passion for up to two months to experience life at sea as full-time crew members.

CEO & Co-Founder of Seabin Project Mr Pete installing the Seabin in the waters of RSYC Marina

WÄRTSILÄ DONATES FIRST-EVER SEABIN IN ASIA TO THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB CEO & Co-Founder of Seabin Project Mr Pete introducing 'Seabin Project' to the audience

On 10 April 2018, Wartsila Corporation, a Global Pilot Partner of the Seabin Project since 2017 had a press conference for the installation of Asia’s first Seabin at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. RSYC is honoured to be the first and only yacht club in Asia to have installed the Seabin. The Seabin, which costs about $5,000 is a floating rubbish bin that is located in the water at Marinas, Docks, Yacht Clubs and Commercial Ports, collecting all floating rubbish. Water is sucked in from the surface and passes through the catch bag filter inside the Seabin. The water is then pumped back into the Marina leaving litter and debris trapped in the catch bag to be disposed of properly. The Seabin also has the potential to collect a percentage of oils and pollutants floating on the water surface.

Seabin Project's chief executive Pete Ceglinski shared that the bin can catch about 1.5kg of debris and litter in a typical day with good weather and can also catch microplastics that are 2mm in size. The catch bag can hold up to 20kg and needs to be emptied once a day. If you are wondering, so far, no fish have been known to have been snared in Seabins. During a pilot run of the Seabin, 2kg of rubbish was collected within 24 hours including items such as plastic bottles, aluminium drink cans and empty instant noodle cups.

Commodore Balakrishnan B giving his speech at the press conference

The Seabin project will make a huge difference, collecting all floating rubbish, oils, fuel, debris in our Marina. This will tackle a local problem that has global implications. We are delighted to be involved in this environmentally-friendly project that will improve the marina water quality and achieve our social responsibility of having a sustainable environment for the boaters community in line with the Marina Industry Association standards. Feel free to take a look at the Seabin the next time you visit our Marina! A pile of debris that was filtered using the Seabin

SINGAPORE YACHT SHOW 12 TO 15 APRIL 2018

Singapore Yacht Show was held from 12th to 15th April 2018 at One Degree 15 Marina and RSYC was glad to participate as one of the exhibitors this year. The purpose was to let more boat owners know about the newly-built breakwater at our Marina and the availability of new pontoons and superyacht berths at RSYC. Added bonus could be some membership sales too! At the Singapore Yacht Show, our Marina Sales Manager got to network with some of the brokers to sell the berths. We also conducted lucky draw to encourage boaters to drop in their name cards. It was a successful marketing event as we managed to gather many important broker contacts and prospective berth buyer. SEA SPORTS

ABOUT RSYC REGATTA In more than 190 years of its history, the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club has built a solid yachting heritage over countless regattas and races. Many an interesting story would unfold if only the trophies in the clubhouse foyer could talk. The RSYC Regatta is the Club’s premier yachting event, and a celebration of a long yachting history. The races will usually run over two weekends in July every year, where Keelboats of all sizes will complete in a series of passage and short course races in the ever-changing water around the southern islands of Singapore. RSYC Regatta is probably the longest running regatta in Singapore with races dating back as early as 1920s. In 1923, RSYC gained its most honoured trophy when Sir Thomas Lipton donated the Lipton Cup. This illustrious tradition has been kept alive by the pioneer yachtsmen of RSYC, then formerly known as the Royal Singapore Yacht Club and had been dynamically revived when RSYC moved to its current clubhouse at West Coast Ferry Road. The Regatta is an important platform for RSYC to spread awareness not only in the sport of sailing, where Singapore is poised to maintain its top spot as Asia’s premier sailing nation, but also to encourage the local community to make sea sports a regular feature of their lifestyle. Do join us for RSYC Regatta 2018 this 21, 22 & 28 July!

WELCOMING NEW BOATS AT RSYC

IMPORTATION, EXPORTATION OR TRANSHIPMENT OF GOODS BY SEA AT RSYC

Looking for a place to berth your boat? Look no further! With the completion of the breakwater project, RSYC is experiencing calmer waters around our berths especially during high tides and strong wind conditions within the marina. The improved conditions in the wet berths are attracting more interested boaters to relocate their boat and berth at RSYC.

We wish to remind all Members that the Club is not an authorised place for the importation, exportation or transhipment of goods by sea including yachts, pleasure crafts and ship spares. The importation, exportation or transhipment of goods by sea is only allowable via authorised places such as the free trade zones. Under the Customs Act, any person found guilty of importing, exporting or transhipping via unauthorised place is liable on conviction to a fine of up to $5,000.

We are pleased to share that we still have limited number of existing berths available for boats from 50ft (15.24m) to 50ft (21.3m). So hurry, make reservations with us now before it is fully taken up! Priority is given based on 'first reserved, first served' basis. If you have any friends who are interested to berth their boat here at RSYC, please contact our Marina Department at 6768 9233 or email to marina@rsyc.org.sg

For more information on Customs procedures and documentation for importation, exportation or transhipment, you may visit www.custom. gov.sg. To report smuggling activities, please call 1800-2330000 or provide your feedback via Singapore Custom website.

REMINDER: BRING YOUR PPCDL CARD WHEN OUT AT SEA Recently, we have encountered cases where Members did not carry their PPCDL card when spot-checked by Police Coast Guard on duty. Please be reminded to bring along your valid PPCDL licensewhen you are out at sea. A photocopy of your license is also acceptable if you are afraid of losing your physical card. Your kind cooperation is much appreciated.

NO WAKE ZONE It has been reported recently of a spike in boats speeding in/out of our marina, potentially causing damage to the pontoon structure, members' boats as well as discomfort to fellow boaters. In a worst case scenario, this could also cause a “Man-Over-Board” situation to unsuspecting boaters or other users of the marina. In order to prevent this, we wish to remind all boaters entering/exiting our marina to adhere to the policy of “No Wake Zone”.
