AT THE HELM

VICE COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members, Thank you for my re-election to the General Committee as Vice Commodore. Unfortunately, I was unable to be present at the AGM due to travel commitments & I hear I missed an enjoyable evening. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce a key new member in the management team to the position of Assistant Marina Manager in charge of the dry stack & wet berths at RSYC. Richelle Henry Aguilar (Richelle) joins us from successful marina operations in the Middle East & the Philippines. His role will be to lead our Marina Operations team in our efforts to upgrade the facilities & services to our boating members & guests. As we near completion of the wet berth expansion at H & I & J Rows, we will continue to replace worn out walers & fenders and repair or replace cracked pontoons etc as necessary. We will also shortly complete the repairs to both of our Marina Bull lift trucks that have suffered from maintenance & repair issues in the last 6 months. We have a longer term plan to replace one of the lift trucks so that we can maintain a consistent level of service to our dry stack boaters. The Committee has become concerned about the number of personal mobility devices (PMDs) that are in use around the club. Not to be confused with PMA (Personal Mobility Aids for the disabled), PMDs are a common sight around

HONORARY MEMBERS HM Sultan Ibrahim Ismail DPM Teo Chee Hean Prof S Jayakumar Dr Tan Cheng Bock Mr S Iswaran

Singapore these days & the Government has had to implement & update new regulations with regards to their use on roads & pathways that are used by other motorized vehicles & the public in general. The club aim to follow the LTA regulations with regards to their use around the club premises. We ask that drivers dismount from their PMD on the ramps leading to the wet berths & either “walk” or carry them to their destination. They should not be parked on pontoons or fingers but must be stored on the members boat instead. In the interest of safety, we would ask that all members & guests adhere to these regulations. Please refer to page 30 on how we will implement these controls with immediate effect. It gives me great pleasure to announce that RSYC, the oldest Yacht Club in Singapore, has been invited to participate in the Government plans to celebrate the country’s Bi-Centennial Anniversary Celebrations in 2019. This may even include participation in next year’s Chingay Parade.

I would like to end off by thanking all members for their support to RSYC and I look forward to seeing you in our club. Best Wishes, JOHN MCGUGAN Vice Commodore Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

Commodore & I have been invited to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to discuss details of how RSYC can participate and contribute to this auspicious even. We will keep our members updated as this progresses. We are in the final planning stages to hold our annual Charity Cruise & Charity Golf events and the date will be announced soon. I would like to emphasize the need for members to support these charitable causes.

RSYC REGATTA 2018: RACE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

A Big ‘T hank You’ to Everyone!

SMU volunteers who assisted them.

Dear Sailors:

Of special mention for this year’s Regatta, we see 2 groups of youths participating. One is the 3 teams of 16 sailors preparing to represent Singapore at the 2018 FISU World University Sailing Championship in Cherbourg, France in September. These 16 sailors comes together from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Management University (SMU), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Polytechnic (SP), and Edinburgh-Napier University. The other is a group of students from Metazone’s ‘Big Brother Big Sisters’ programme, with many of them racing for the first time! With these broader age groups across all the classes, there is now greater awareness of the Club’s proud legacies, and our priceless trophies for the Regatta.

It was so great to have you all racing at the RSYC Regatta 2018! I believe everyone, especially the firsttimers in our Regatta, appreciates that RSYC’s location provided quite a different sailing and racing experience. Challenging the port traffic (where getting to the race area is a unique experience by itself!), and seeing the beautiful scenery around Raffles Lighthouse makes the RSYC Regatta special in Singapore’s racing calendar. This year, we have a larger turnout of 34 entries across the IRC, PY, SB20, J24, and Hansa 2.3 (Sailability) classes; with 22 sailors bringing their boats all the way from the Singapore Armed Forces Yacht Club, Changi Sailing Club, National Sailing Centre, Marina at Keppel Bay, and Raffles Marina. We were also grateful to have the help of staff, support boats and equipment generously loaned by CSC, SSF and RM. Personally, I must share with everyone that I have learnt these few years to appreciate the challenges faced by the Sailability class. They had always indomitably participate at our races; and I got to know the sailors, their core team of volunteers (some of them with disabilities of their own), and the

Beside the excellent job by Richard Cai and his team of race officials on-water, our sailing executive Abdul Hadi was outstanding overseeing the on-water and onshore activities with the support of our GM and his team of managers and staff from all departments. And I think you will all agree with me that the highlight of the onshore programmes is the stunning performance by the NUS’s cheerleading team ‘Alpha Verve’!

Thank you all for coming; and I look forward to seeing you all again at the next RSYC Regatta! Most sincerely, SC Yong Race Director RSYC Regatta 2018

RSYC REGATTA 2018: 21,22 & 28 JULY

GREAT EXPERIENCE! RSYC REGATTA 2018 We would like to congratulate the RSYC for running a fabulous Regatta. For us coming from Changi Sailing Club it was great to be able to race in different waters, and for most of our crew to see a new regatta area in Singapore. It was really quite delightful being at the western end of Sudong Island where we raced around the cans, and also being entertained by the Singapore Air Force undertaking their ‘touch and go’ practice sessions on Sudong Island! On the first day of racing we all encountered relatively light winds, which do not particularly suit our boat. However, we achieved some good results racing around the cans. On Sunday, the second day, we had the passage race down the western side of Sudong Island, Pawai Isalnd and Senang Island; out around the southern side of Raffles Lighthouse, and back. It was a great run which we really enjoyed. The day did not go for us as well as the Saturday. Even though we had favourable wind and excellent conditions, we had to cope with a number of mishaps onboard.

So in a flurry, we dropped the spinnaker, came about, and then finished correctly around the other side of the committee boat and the green channel marker. We then waited nervously for our competition to finish their race, counting the minutes and hoping our lead was big enough after adjusted time…..And, Yes! It was! On the final day of racing, it was racing around the cones. I guess for us in the PY class we enjoy the passageracing more than the ‘windward-leeward’ races; but I gather this is all part of Regatta racing which we are very new to. Maybe we could have two passage races and only one day around the cones next year?

Our troubles started as we rounded Raffles Lighthouse. Not being very familiar with the area, we were not certain which mark to go for, and got into trouble with the spinnaker lift. Having got around the mark, we had problems getting the spinnaker down. And we went some way off course before we could retrieve it and get back to racing. Then we had an unfortunate episode of 'man overboard’. We heave-to and managed to pull our errant sailor back on board (fortunately he maintained a firm grip on the safety lines). It took a while to gather ourselves, but we did. And what followed was a perfect downwind run to the finish line.

The hospitality at the club was well received, and the evening functions were very enjoyable sitting outside at the front of the club overlooking the marina, enjoying great food and live entertainment. Thank you to the organising committee and the RSYC for hosting such a successful event!

Then to cap it all off we finished going through “Saturdays” finishing line, which was not the same for the passage race!

RSYC REGATTA 2018: 21,22 & 28 JULY

FIRST REGATTA This year I was given the opportunity to be part of the RSYC Regatta by Metazone’s ‘Big Bro Big Sis’ programme (BBBS). Personally, this was the first regatta I have ever attended. And I have to say, it was an experience that I will keep close to my heart. Before I attended the regatta, I knew that it was a race, but was lost when it came to the details of it. Luckily, BBBS paired me up with Uncle Yong on the media boat on Day One of the regatta. He was very open in sharing his knowledge about racing rules and what to look out for in a regatta with me, which was very helpful. During the first day, the wind conditions were light throughout the day. As a spectator, I could see that teams took some time to complete each race. This resulted in shortening of race courses, and lesser number of races. I hoped to catch some excitement during the race, which I did whilst watching my fellow BBBS sailors on ‘Sticky Beak’ and ‘Bandit’ in close competition with the other sailors. Final Day! The wind conditions changed throughout the day. I sailed on ‘Xtra-mile’ with Uncle Chin Nam and his team of experienced sailors. We managed to have clean starts for the races, strategized our maneuvers, and managed to pull ahead of the fleet to lead the races. We realised that we were good at sailing upwind but needed to work on our downwind sailing. And each time we went downwind we made sure we did something better than before. We were doing great during the first 2 races! However, during the second race, our spinnaker tore. Which put us in a dilemma of deciding whether to continue racing, or to withdraw. In the end we chose to race on with only our Jib and Mainsail. We did have a few hiccups as we sailed but I can proudly say that we overcame every obstacle as a team. By the end of the day, the coordination of the team had improved greatly, and we learned to value each other better. This year’s Regatta was a rollercoaster ride that I enjoyed very much, from racing on ‘Xtra-mile’ to cheering for ‘Sticky Beak’ and ‘Bandit’. I am very grateful to Metazone’s Big Brother Big Sister Programme (BBBS) for the opportunity to be part of this wonderful event. And I am eagerly looking forward to next year’s Regatta to learn more than what I have this year! -Vinoshini Selvathurai “Big Brother Big Sister’ Programme

INTERNATIONAL SEAKEEPERS SOCIETY FLOATING CLASSROOM 23 AUGUST 2018

RSYC member Mr Julian Chang, also the Board Director of The International SeaKeepers Society hosted students from Changkat Changi Secondary School on board the corporate yacht of "Luzerne" with the kind support of Member Mr Steven Lek as part of an Educational Outreach Programme on 23 August 2018.

After an informative lesson, students were divided into two group. The first group was provided plankton nets to collect samples from the water around the Marina. They collected many interesing organisms, which were then brought back on board the yacht, to be identified and further examined under a microscope.

As a US-based non-profit organisation, The International SeaKeepers Society promotes oceanographic education, conservation and research through direct involvement with the region's yachting community.

The second group enjoyed a crash course on the usage of the scuba diving equipment for underwater exploration to discover more beautiful marine life. Thry were given a chance to try on the scba diving equipment as well.

Following a short briefing about the history of RSYC done by Executive Secretary Ms Anne Mah and a safety briefing by Marina Supervisor Radiuddin, the students climbed on board the Luzerne where scientist Dr Toh Tai Chong and his team from the Tropical Marine Science Institute (National University of Singapore) facilitated the lessons for the students on Singapore's marine biodiversity, plastic pollution and sustainability practices.

The students were grateful for an enriching learning journey at the end of the day.

A big thank you to Mr Julian Chang for letting RSYC take part and support in the marine research and educational outreach to raise awareness about global ocean issues.

DOCKSIDE

PERSONAL MOBILITY DEVICES NOT ALLOWED ON MARINE PONTOONS In line with the Singapore government in tightening the regulations for riding of Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) in public area, we would like to inform members that PMDs includes but not limited to bicycle, electric scooter, kick scooter and unicycle are not permitted on the marina pontoons for safety reason PMDs can only be ride on the driveways on shore at very low speed of 10 km/hr. Riders have to dismount and push/walk their device when they are on the ramps, pontoons & fingers. Boaters have to strictly store the devices on their boats and not parked on the pontoons or fingers. Your kind cooperation is much appreciated.

REMINDER: BRING YOUR PPCDL CARD WHEN OUT AT SEA Recently, we have encountered cases where Members did not carry their PPCDL card when spot-checked by Police Coast Guard on duty. Please be reminded to bring along your valid PPCDL licensewhen you are out at sea. A photocopy of your license is also acceptable if you are afraid of losing your physical card. Your kind cooperation is much appreciated.

NO WAKE ZONE It has been reported recently of a spike in boats speeding in/out of our marina, potentially causing damage to the pontoon structure, members' boats as well as discomfort to fellow boaters. In a worst case scenario, this could also cause a “Man-Over-Board” situation to unsuspecting boaters or other users of the marina. In order to prevent this, we wish to remind all boaters entering/exiting our marina to adhere to the policy of “No Wake Zone”.
