AT THE HELM

REAR COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members, As the festive season will soon be upon us, I am sure many of you will be busy preparing for get-togethers and such with your family and friends. As always, do call us here at the Club and find out more about what we have on offer for you; or better yet have it here at the Club and let us handle all the nitty-gritty for you. In this message, I’d like to bring a few updates about the happenings at the Club. ROYAL VISIT BY THE KING OF TONGA The Club had the privilege of hosting a visit by the King Tupou VI of Tonga on 9 September 2016. King Tupou VI and his entourage – who were in Singapore on a working visit with a particular interest in the marina industry – were warmly welcomed by flag officers and committee members of the Club. They took the chance to go on a harbour cruise around the waters off West Coast. See page 6 for more. WEST COAST COMMUNITY & US The Club continues to play its part and contribute to the West Coast community in a variety of ways. One of them is hosting talented young researchers from NUS and NTU for projects involving the marine environment and water-based vessels. You can read about it more on pages 18 and 24. Another activity – one that you may already be familiar with – is the Annual Charity Cruise that is scheduled for Saturday 5 November 2016. At the time of writing, we are in the midst of finalizing the details,

to host several less-fortunate families in collaboration with the West Coast Community Centre and other partners, where these families will get the rare opportunity of riding on a yacht to Pulau Hantu for a day of fun activities, on and off the water. WAVESCREEN PROJECT Despite some unforeseen setbacks and after months of hard work by the Development Sub-Committee, the wavescreen project continues with finetuning the details of the wavescreen and the contract for the project awarded to a suitable contractor. Work is expected to begin before the end of the year. The wavescreen will undoubtedly enhance the waters of our marina, and boaters can look forward to less “rocky” conditions when the project is completed. More updates will be made available to members as the project moves forward. WINE & DINE As you may already know, the Bridge Bistro & Beacon Bar, which is run by iConcepts, started operations well over a year ago. With its intricate blend of Asian and international cuisine, the outlet has since refined its menu to suit the tastes and preferences of our members and guests. Do drop by the outlet when you’re in the mood for some unique dining; or if you just want to relax over a couple of drinks overlooking the marina. Despite several upgrades over at the Wharf the past six months, we have seen a decline in members patronizing the outlet, thus a drop in overall sales as well. Do give the Club your support by regularly patronizing The Wharf for your meals and get-togethers. See the pages in this magazine for promotions including the Christmas Goodies Order, that we’ve prepared for you for November and December. A very cosy corner of the Club, The Mess has had brisk business, thanks to the steady support of members who regularly visit the outlet to unwind and catch up with other members. drinks, The Mess is another place where members can “catch a breath” after a hard day’s work.

MARINA MATTERS Over at the marina, our Marina Manager Mohd Tasrin has been kept busy with muchneeded repairs and maintenance of the berths, particularly the main attenuator of the wet berths. Regular scheduled checks and preventive measures are gradually being put in place to avoid unnecessary inconvenience to boaters. Although there’s more to be done, boating members will agree that conditions have visibly improved; and with the impending completion of the wavescreen, boaters can look forward to a better marina in the near future. GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE

Dear Members, It’s my pleasure and honour to be given this opportunity to serve you as General Manager of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club and to be able to work hand in hand with you and the committee. Firstly, let me give a brief introduction of myself. The bulk of my career has been in the hospitality industry with established brands such as Hyatt, Marina Mandarin, Westin, Mandarin Oriental, Inter Continental, Carlton, Rendezvous and South Beach & Hotel Club in various roles such as Front Office, Sales & Marketing, Finance, Food & Beverage, Rooms Division, Development, Project, Pre-Openings and Hotel General Management. In total, I bring with me over 33 years of hospitality experience. Prior to joining the hotel industry, I had served in the Republic of Singapore Navy for six years and after a full circle, the lure of the sea is too great to resist! With the arrival of a brand new year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members a happy and successful 2017. The last few months have been a very challenging time for everyone and with the new additions to the management team – Tina Saw as the Finance Manager and

Victor Phua in the role of Food & Beverage Manager – we strive to serve and improve the services of the Club in the year ahead. As we strive ahead in the coming months, some notable events to watch out for are the Charity Cruise on 5 November, Commodore's Day on 20 November, Members' Night on 9 December for festive fun, Christmas celebrations with takeaway goodies and New Year Eve’s Party on 31 December; and we seek your patronage and support for these events. Also in recent months, we have added a new tennis court on the rooftop of the accommodation wing and we encourage members to use this facility as we continue to expand our offerings. We would also like to seek members to support our accommodation wing which was expanded to 60 rooms in 2014, to book a staycation with the family and friends for the upcoming holiday period or company retreat, seminars; or friends and relatives looking for a comfortable stay as we have various packages available. Also, don’t forget our banquet facilities, including Foreshore, for the ideal function venue.

this Club more vibrant and encourage your support to patronize our outlets, accommodations, banquets, promotions and events to help us make RSYC a truly well supported member’s Club. KELLVIN ONG General Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

Safety measures and emergency procedures at the marina (wet and dry berths) that have been put in place several months back, are now actively integrated into daily operations. Do chat up with Tasrin if you’d like to know more about the activities at the marina.

The festive season also means that there will be a lot of drinking and partying, and we would like to encourage members to drink responsibly; and to take advantage of our special “Drink & Stay” promotion. Promotion details can be found in this magazine and on the website.

Jet-ski fans would be glad to know that the Marine Sub-Committee is exploring various options for jet-ski storage at the Club. This will maximize the space available and free up several carpark lots that are currently occupied by the jet-skis.

SUPPORT OUR CLUB Steady support from members underpins RSYC’s survival and existence in the time to come. And as we progress towards better times, I strongly encourage all members to accord RSYC the unwavering support it truly deserves.

If you have any suggestions or ideas on this topic, do drop us an email at info@rsyc.org.sg

Members can show their support by patronizing its F&B outlets, holding their private or business events at the Club, stay at our Marina Lodge, and actively participate in the events organized by the management.

UPCOMING EVENTS The year-end will see several big events in the pipeline – Commodore’s Day on 20 November, Members’ Night on 9 December, and New Year’s Eve Nautical New Year on 31 December. Do pencil these dates in your calendar and show your support at these events. See pages of this magazine for more information.

Above all, this is our Club and its future hinges on support from members like you and me. Have a great festive season ahead and see you around the Club!

STAYING AT RSYC’S MARINA LODGE If you’re not planning to go overseas during the holidays, why not have a staycation nearer to home at our Marina Lodge. As members of the Club, priority will be given to you for room bookings, however

PESKY BIRDS AT THE WHARF

If you've been to The Wharf recently, you might have heard sounds of birds "squawking" at the dining area. These sounds are meant to scare away smaller pesky birds that have been a nuisance to diners at the Wharf. Although this is still in its trial phase, it is one of the steps that we've taken to make dining experience at The Wharf for members and guests more enjoyable.

CONTRABAND CIGARETTES

Being one of the many entry points for visitors from outside of Singapore, the Club faces challenges of illegal items being brought into Singapore; and one of these items are contraband or duty-unpaid cigarettes. Possession of dutyunpaid cigarettes is a crime punishable by law, and those who are found guilty can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty evaded, or jailed for up to six years, or both. If you notice any suspicious activities relating to contraband cigarettes at the Club, please report it to the General Manager at gm@rsyc.org.sg

NO REVERSE PARKING INTO SHELTERED LOTS AT MARINA LODGE

Please be reminded that reverse parking is not allowed at the sheltered lots at Marina Lodge This is to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the rooms on the first level. We seek your cooperation and understanding in this matter. Thank you.

WE VALUE YOUR FEEDBACK Do share with us any feedback or suggestions you may have about the Club as it will help the Club in improving its service and offerings to members and their guests. You can write and send your feedback to info@rsyc.org.sg

MID-AUTUMN STEAMBOAT DINNER & LANTERN WALK 15 SEPTEMBER 2016

This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival fell on a weekday, but that did not deter 125 members and their families to come by for the event at The Wharf. One of the highlights of the evening was the ever-popular steamboat; and as always, the traditional lantern walk around the Club's grounds, was a hit with the kids. The evening ended with everyone enjoying themselves with their family and fellow members.

OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION 2016 30 SEPTEMBER 2016

Revelling under the night skies, members and guests came together on Friday 30 September 2016 for a night of drinking, indulging in fabulous German fare and games! With a record turnout of over 200, those who attended the Members' cum Oktoberfest celebration, packed the Foreshore Deck, and were not disppointed as the evening's affair was led by emcee Mr Nigel Ho, who also happens to be the chairman for the Events & Sea Sports Subcommittee. The Oktoberfest ambience kicked everyone's lively spirit up a few notches and even the younger ones got into the groove with some on-stage games and quizzes! A few lucky ones also walked away with some excellent prizes. Not forgetting, members who were celebrating their birthdays were also treated to a "chocolatey" cake and the mandatory birthday song. From the looks of it, everyone ended the night on a good note, lots of happy memories and maybe a little hungover the next day.

BOATERS’ & MEMBERS’ NIGHT 28 OCTOBER 2016

The gathering on Friday 28 October was double the fun as the event combined both the Boaters' Night and Members' Night. Originally scheduled to be held at the Foreshore Deck, the event was shifted to second level of the clubhouse due to the "less than favourable" weather conditions that evening. Entertainment was provided by a three-piece "live" band playing evergreen favourites and requests from the audience; and the ever-popular tombola was as usual a hit among the attendees. Members celebrating their birthdays also got their "15 minutes" of limelight, a birthday cake and the pre-requisite birthday song from the audience. The night climaxed with a "dance off" and prize-giving for lucky draws and tombola winners. JOIN US FOR THE UPCOMING GATHERING ON FRIDAY 9 DECEMBER. SEE PAGE 17 FOR DETAILS.

ULTRASONIC ANTI-FOULING PROJECT BY NTU Biological fouling (biofouling) is a natural occurrence, where microorganisms attach themselves to submerged surfaces using natural mechanisms, forming the basis of an underwater ecosystem to which larger organisms such as mussels and barnacles can attach themselves. This is especially prominent in the marine industry, where bio-fouling happens on the outer hull of vessels and causes increased fuel and maintenance cost as well as loss of income. Therefore anti-fouling is important to reduce the cost to the marine industry in fuel and time. The most common anti-fouling method used by the industry is currently anti-fouling paints but these paints are poisonous to other marine organisms, and more ecologically friendly solutions have to be found for future due to recent regulations. In this research, we are investigating a novel anti-fouling technique using ultrasound (sound with frequency higher than 20 kHz), which has been proved to be ecologically friendly. Historically, ultrasound has been used widely in cleaning medical equipment and industrial parts. This project will explore the effectiveness of ultrasound in reducing the attachment rate to metallic objects by various microorganisms, which will then lead to the development of ultrasonic anti-fouling solutions for marine vessels.

RE-IMPLEMENTATION OF DRY BERTH TRANSITING RATES AT SERVICE CRADLES FROM 1 NOVEMBER 2016 In November 2014, a resolution was passed to implement a service charge for the use of the service cradles. However, in view of negative feedback from members, we relented and hence, had not imposed any charges. Regrettably, we continue to witness our NOTES • Upon recovery and subject to availability, boat will be placed on the washing cradle for up to one hour for washing, cleaning and flushing of engines. • Boater must keep the washing area clean. All rubbish must be disposed into waste bin. • No discharge of grey or black water while the boat is on the washing cradle. • No clearing of barnacles. • No smoking in the washing area. • Repair/ servicing of engines on washing cradles

generosity being exploited in many instances. In the interest of fair opportunities for all boating members, it is now necessary for us to address the abuse of this free-usage service. Thus, we will re-implement the following charges with effect from 1st November 2016. For more information or applicable rates, call the Marine Department at 67689233 or email to marina@rsyc.org.sg

during weekdays are subject to approval by the Marina Department. • Repair/ service cradle must be booked in advance through the marine office. • Application of anti fouling agents and painting (including spray painting) are not allowed while the boat is on the cradle. • Hot work and major fiberglass works are not allowed on the cradles. • For safety reasons, boats may not be launched during bad weathers e.g. thunder storms, poor visibility or other situations deemed dangerous.

• Members are given six (6) free launching / recovery per calendar month. Each subsequent cycle will be charged at $20.00 per cycle. • Legitimate SZH registered boat members are given nine (9) free launching / recovery per calendar month. Each subsequent cycle will be charged at $20.00 per cycle. • Transferring and returning a boat from the dry stack berth for any purpose at the request of a member is considered as one cycle.
