AT THE HELM

TREASURER’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members, As you are well aware, we embarked on the wavescreen construction project after months of planning and with the approval of members at the AGM in June last year. Though there were some initial delays, preliminary work has begun and we are expecting major works to begin around the third week of March. The committee and management are proactively keeping the project in motion so that our boating members can enjoy the benefits of a better marina. More updates will be made available to members as we progress further into the project.

BRIEF NOTE ON FINANCIALS Due to the varied challenges faced by the Club, we can expect another year of losses. Unaudited numbers shows us losing to the tune of more than a million dollars. The management team have been advised to come up with plans to improve the overall numbers. Our auditor is presently conducting an audit as I write, and full disclosure of financial statements will be presented to members in the upcoming Annual Report and at the Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled to take place on 23 June 2017. Please find time to attend the coming AGM.

STEPPING UP ON SECURITY MEASURES In recent months, there have been cases of severe mischief, unauthorised entries and trespassing. Some of these were carried out by guests of boat charterer who are members. To curb these activities, the security team have been tasked to scan the identity documents, record and track all entries to the Club by non-members, including charter guests and contractors. We seek members to be vigilant and report

HONORARY MEMBERS HRH Sultan Ibrahim Ismail DPM Teo Chee Hean Prof S Jayakumar Dr Tan Cheng Bock Mr S Iswaran

any unusual activities that you come across to the Front Office. This is after all our Club and it is to our own interest to look after it.

SAILING, SEA SPORTS & EVENTS IN THE COMING MONTHS We are also continuing our efforts in gaining a stronger foothold to promote sailing and sea sports activities at the Club. Apart from the well-subscribed PPCDL courses held at the Club, experienced sailors among our members are encouraged to step forward to chip in their ideas and if possible, volunteer their time and expertise. For those who are looking to take up sailing as a sport, do get in touch with the Events & Sea Sports Department and let us know of your interest.

from its members.

Signature events of the Club are presently in the works – Annual Dinner in May while the Commodore’s Day and the RSYC Regatta will take place in July. The Annual Charity Golf will make a comeback later this year and will be scheduled back-to-back with the Annual Charity Cruise. Do look out for details of these on the website and posters around the Club.

With all these events, activities and promotions planned out just for you, it would not be fruitful if the Club does not get foremost support and patronage from its members. And with that I am unreservedly urging you to support your Club by regularly participating in upcoming events; and patronizing its outlets, accommodation and facilities.

The Singapore Yacht Show, happening from 6 to 9 April, showcasing top yacht makers, boating and lifestyle accessories, will be of interest for yachting enthusiasts among our members. Do keep a lookout for details on our website and on posters around the Club.

With best wishes, TAN KAY TOH Treasurer Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

MATTERS CLOSE TO OUR HEARTS Before I end my message, I would like to gently remind members that the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club is a “members’ club” unlike proprietary clubs; and as a member, I encourage you to come forward to serve. In short, the Club’s well-being in all aspects is very much dependant on its members; and in order for the Club to thrive in the coming years, it would need the undivided support

GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE

Dear Members As we move into the Year of the Rooster 2017, the Club has been actively embarking on a sprucing up campaign to improve its surroundings. We are glad to welcome the new Maintenance Manager Mr Zailanee, who recently joined us in January. He and the Maintenance team are making improvements at the Marina and Clubhouse fixing light fixtures, loose boards at the Foreshore, improving lightings around the Club premises, painting the back of the house areas and The Wharf - amongst the long list of “to do things”. We ask that members bear with us during this time as we embark on up keeping the Club premises. Zailanee is also working with PUB on ways to reduce water wastage as in the recent Budget announcement; a price hike of 30% from July 2017. As such, we seek members’ cooperation in helping us to save water. Another addition to the RSYC family is the new Head Chef, who has a wealth of experience in Asian, Western and Peranakan offerings (having spent some time with Blue Ginger restaurant) and is revitalising the menu at The Wharf. This coming April, we will be embarking on a Peranakan food promotion and we are truly excited and encourage members to support this promotion and do give us your feedback. We are also working closely with the Indonesian Embassy and planning to do an Indonesian Food Festival in the first half of the year. Do keep a look out for this offering soon. We are also pleased to announce that RSYC is now aggressively embarking on a sailing programme and is calling out to all sailors to support this initiative. As we draw near to

the RSYC Regatta in July 2017, preparations are now underway to actively promote sailing in the Club. We are working closely with the Singapore Sailing Federation to bring back sailing to RSYC and supporting educational institutions in their sailing activities. I would like to personally call upon members to help us in offering a cleaner and healthier environment for ALL as we are aware of the strict “No Smoking” rule here in our tiny island which NEA has strictly enforced in the past few years. To cater to our smoking members, we have designated a few “smoking areas” approved by NEA and would like to remind members not to light up especially around the Marina area, covered carparks, Marina Lodge rooms and swimming pool. If unsure of the area which is designated for smoking, kindly approach any of our friendly staff who will be more than happy to show you where this is permissible. Thank you for your cooperation. We have also tightened the security to the Club, especially to the marina area with the introduction of a scanner to capture details of visitors. This is to ensure that only registered or authorised visitors are allowed access to the Club and the marina. As you may have noticed, we have also placed prominent signage at the entrance of the clubhouse informing members and guests not to carry fishing equipment, rods, fishes etc, through the lobby and The Wharf when proceeding to or returning from their fishing trips as these have inconvenienced other members visiting the Club. We seek members’ cooperation in enforcing this rule.

members who recommend their guests and friends to stay at the Marina Lodge with F&B vouchers, and we seek your support in helping us recommend or better still book rooms at the Marina Lodge. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to your continued support to the various initiatives and promotions here at the Club. SPECIAL VISIT & BURGEE EXCHANGE WITH SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB’S PAST COMMODORE

On 2 February, the Club welcomed a special guest Mr Douglas Peet from Singapore Yacht Club! Yes, you read that right (it’s not a typo) – Singapore Yacht Club is a club based in Michigan, USA and was incorporated in 1959.

SCANNING OF IDENTIFICATION & SIGNING-IN OF GUESTS

In a step towards enhancing security levels at the Club, charter guests who are heading out to sea will now be required to submit their identification (Identification Cards, Driver’s License or Passport) for scanning and manifest documentation – before making their way out to their designated boats.

This exercise was to ensure that proper rules of driving the buggy were adhered to, on top of equipping more staff with the skillset, so that if the need arises, these staff would be able to put these skills to good use.

UPDATED POLICY ON BUGGY OPERATIONS WITH EFFECT FROM 10 JAN

Still on the topic of buggies, please do note that we have updated our policy on Buggy Operations which has taken effect from 10 January 2017. This changes were made in a bid to improve our services to our members. See page 36 for full details. This serves as a way to identify individuals in the event of an emergency out at sea; and as a record of any illegal departures from the country.

For further information, please do not hesitate to contact Marine Dept at 6768 9234 or email to marina@rsyc. org.sg

Vendors and contractors will also be required to submit their identification for scanning.

Mr Peet, who was former commodore of Singapore Yacht Club, paid us a visit during his short stay in Singapore, and exchanged burgees with GM Kellvin Ong. Read more about Singapore Yacht Club at http://singaporeyachtclub.com/

Marine Biodiversity in Singapore Article contributed by National Parks Board

Despite being one of the busiest waterways in the world, Singapore’s waters are teeming with marine life.

conducive environment for marine animals to thrive. Conservation programmes, such as the placement of Reef Enhancement Units for ’planting’ corals, have also been carried out to proactively safeguard our biodiversity.

Our waters are home to a rich diversity of marine life including over 250 species of hard corals, about 200 species of sponges, more than 100 species of reef fish, 35 mangrove plant species and 12 seagrass species. They are found in various coastal to marine habitats, including rocky shores and mangroves. In recent years, scientists continue to unravel new discoveries in Singapore’s waters, including new species or those initially thought to be extinct.

With the announcement of the Sisters’ Islands Marine Park on 12th July 2014, there are more opportunities for community stewardship towards our environment as the Marine Park serves as a platform for outreach, educational, conservation and research activities related to our native marine biodiversity. Fishing and dropping of anchors (among other activities that are detrimental to our biodiversity) are not allowed within the marine park.

For example, the Neptune’s Cup Sponge (Cliona patera), which was thought to be globally extinct for more than 100 years, was rediscovered off Singapore’s coast in 2011! Today, Singapore is the only country with known location of the living specimens.

However, the members of public can participate in guided walks to learn about the local marine life. Individuals and organisations may also contribute to habitat enhancement efforts in the marine park by sponsoring a coral through the Plant-A-Coral, Seed-A-Reef programme. With combined effort, our marine environment can be conserved for our future generations to enjoy.

The amazing biodiversity found here is not a mere coincidence. Besides being strategically located within a global marine biodiversity hotspot, strong water pollution controls in Singapore also contribute to the

Taking the lead in Sustainability at the 2017 Singapore Sailing Federation Annual Awards Gala Dinner The 2017 edition of the Singapore Sailing Federation (SSF) Annual Awards Gala Dinner brings the focus on the community as they incorporate a charity element to the celebrations Held at One˚15 Marina Club on the 24 March 2017, the 2017 SSF Annual Awards Gala Dinner celebrates the best of sailing in Singapore. This year, the theme of the event is Our Sailing Family and it will welcome Guest-Of-Honour Richard Seow and over 300 members of the sailing community come together for a good cause – raising funds for the Sailing and Sustainability programme. The Sailing and Sustainability Programme (SSP) is a partnership between SSF and Metazone.org, a sustainability group whose objective is to provide learning opportunities for youth in need to find successful pathways by using sports to learn life skills

and sustainability, and Outward Bound Singapore. SSP, a key element of the high participation sailing calendar, targets secondary school students and exposes them to successful corporate mentors and university students, using sailing as a vehicle to facilitate the teaching of sustainability life skills. Running parallel with character development principles, it targets the cultivation of leadership and teamwork among students aged 14-16 years old. “In sailing, sometimes there are things that we don’t plan for like the lack of wind, for example. We just need to rough it out and persevere. These are the same skills and values that we can use in life as well. This programme has taught me that,” said 14-year-old Ong Boon Teck from Orchid Park Secondary School, a participant of the 2016 programme. Since its inception in 2014, a total

of 420 students have been reached by this programme. The 3-phase programme sees participants at the National Sailing Centre for a 4-day introductory sailing camp over the June Holidays in Phase 1 before bringing the students to Marina Bay in Phase 2 over a couple of weeks to expand their sailing horizon on keelboats and broaden their history of Singapore, particularly on the significance of the Marina Bay and Singapore River. Phase 3 is the highlight of the program, as they are plunged into the deep end to venture on a sailing expedition from Changi Sailing Club across to the Outward Bound Singapore campsite at Pulau Ubin. An afternoon of sailing on Pacers dinghies and keelboats to the popular outdoor education hotspot where students spent the night sums up the programme nicely in a memorable way. Metazone.org founder, Jevan Tan, said, “The SSP allows our children to grow and learn with opportunities that may not be available if they just stayed on land. The water provides a unique environment to teach these skills and every time we do this programme, we are amazed at the potential of our children in neighbourhood schools. For every child here, we hope to see he or she attain the best they can and would love to see more children introduced to this concept of sustainability and sailing.” Looking ahead, the SSP aims to reach out to 200 new students each year. The fully subsidised programme will be using the raised funds to pay for meals, transport and equipment for the students. And at this year’s SSF Annual Awards Gala Dinner 2017 and in line with its theme of Our Sailing Family, the SSF aims to encourage

the sailing community to do their part to get more young people sailing for the right reasons! Proceeds from the sales of tables during the dinner, a series of charity carwashes in the months of February and March as well as a silent auction in the Pre-Event Art Exhibition on the night of the dinner will go to this charitable cause. In the lead-up to the event, volunteers of the beneficiary, affectionately called the Big Brothers and Big Sisters, are giving their time to make specially designed pottery items and art display boat shelves for the silent auction. They will be under the tutorage of the founder of Center Pottery Singapore, Joan Huang, who is also a champion sailor herself. They will be making 10 unique items which will be available for auction at the Pre-Event Art Exhibition at the SSF Annual Awards Gala Dinner.

Shared Dr Ben Tan, President of SSF, “SSF, in full alignment with World Sailing, believes in the importance of sustainable growth and young people inculcated with sustainable behaviour. Sailing presents an excellent platform to teach these skills and we should all play our part in developing the future generations of sailors. This is a huge project for sailing and we hope to get the support of the whole Singapore sailing community.”

"Everyone is gifted with an innate ability to create. Working with clay is a fun yet meditative experience, as you need to concentrate and be present with your evolving creation. And today each piece created by our Big Brother Big Sister participants is crafted meaningfully and joyfully. Every piece of work we have made together holds the spirit of our journey through life, and reflects how we use clay to express our thoughts, hopes, and challenges. I hope that through this partnership, our young sailors will be able to discover a different realm in themselves through art in their formative years," said Joan.

If you or your friends wish to buy tables or tickets to support the event, individual tickets are priced at $100 each while prices for the tables of 10 diners are as follows:

SUPPORTERS’ TABLE – $1000 • PREMIUM TABLE – $2000 • SPONSORS’ TABLE – $3000 and above Please RSVP or make table bookings with Yizhe (yizhe@singaporesailing.org.sg) by 17 March 2017. Please feel free to contact him should you require any more details. All prices above are NETT. Singapore Sailing Federation is a registered Institute of Public Character (IPC) and we will be able to issue a tax deductible receipt on request. Donations would be calculated by subtracting $1,000 from the amount paid for the table. For donations above $8,000, the table will be given free and the whole donated sum will be tax deductible. Halal and vegetarian menu is available on request.

RECORD NUMBER OF YACHTS TO DEBUT AT SINGAPORE YACHT SHOW 2017 The seventh instalment of Asia’s premier boat show promises to impress with regional premieres on water, lifestyle events and glamorous parties on water and on-land Photo Credit: SuperYachtTimes.com

SINGAPORE – 25 January 2017 Excitement and anticipation for the seventh edition of the Singapore Yacht Show (SYS) is already building despite being three months away. From 6-9 April 2017, some of the industry’s most important yacht builders and brokers will once again showcase their vessels at ONE˚15 Marina Club in Sentosa Cove. As the Show organisers draw the curtain on last December’s successful Thailand Yacht Show, they now shift their focus to Singapore. The second edition of the Thailand Yacht Show, held in partnership with the Thai government, took place from 15-18 December 2016 in Phuket’s Ao Po Grand Marina. With 60 exhibitors and no less than 55 vessels on display including 18 superyachts, the offering was certainly ’bigger and better’ than any before. In addition to the sparkling displays of yachts and superyachts presented along the pontoons of Ao Po Grand Marina, the Demo Platform by Java Yachting offered live demonstrations of dinghy sailing, SUP, dragon boating and kayaking. Luxury lifestyle brands were also on land at the Exhibition Pavilion, to feature the very finest in Phuket property, fashion, cars and nautical ancillaries. The social scene at TYS was electric, with parties every night both on land and on board. TYS is set to come back with its third

edition, which will take place between 14-17 December 2017. Looking onward to SYS 2017, Andy Treadwell, Managing Director of both shows said, “We are very proud of what we have achieved in just seven years. We’re thrilled that so many of the industry’s most important players have identified SYS as the most effective platform from which to present their products to the Asian market. We are working flat out with a whole raft of important new local partners in all the strategic countries in the region to get the right kind of visitor coming to Singapore next April”. ASIAN PREMIERES & DEBUTS Asia’s leading yacht dealer and one of SYS’ first exhibitors, Simpson Marine, will return to the Show with Asian premiere Beneteau

Oceanis Yacht 62. Committed to partnering with leading brands, Simpson Marine will also exhibit several Singapore debuts including the Lagoon 42 and the Monte Carlo 6. Loyal supporter Boat Lagoon Yachting will be present to the Show again with an impressive line-up, including three iconic models from the world-renowned British brand, Princess Yachts presenting a 30M, S60 and Princess 49, all making their Asia Debut at SYS. While Italian yacht builder Azimut Yachts will introduce the Azimut 95RPH to the region for the first time. Hong Seh Marine will once again display an impressive lineup of yachts, including the Asia premiere of the Cranchi Z35, and the return of the popular Cranchi Eco Trawler 43, which made her premiere at SYS2016. to the market, showcasing the brand new Ferretti 450 and Pershing 5X, while the Ferretti 700 will make her Asian debut as well. CATAMARANS ARE KING Multihulls have long been popular in South East Asia, and have been particularly well received at SYS. Not only do they offer expansive interior and exterior spaces, they also provide great stability while underway and at anchor. SYS 2017 will welcome a new exhibitor, HH Catamarans who builds state-of-the-art, carbon fibre, highperformance catamarans for a discerning clientele seeking an exceptional experience. Exciting partnerships are in the pipeline to introduce a whole host of new food outlets and a beer garden which will provide a lively party atmosphere. VIPs can head to a chic, redesigned VIP Lounge in the West Pavilion, or hop onboard one of the yachts in the marina. Guests will be able to enjoy the Show into the evening hours now open from 3 – 9pm daily. Energetic supercar parades, glamorous fashion shows and the onwater Demonstration Platform will provide lots of entertainment for those on the docks. Photo Credit: BlueiProd

WINE & DINE BRIDGE BISTRO & BEACON BAR

FRENCH-TRAINED CHEF REYNALDO BLENDS CLASSIC EUROPEAN COOKING WITH AN ASIAN TWIST If you search for Chef Reynaldo Arriola on Google (which you'll very likely be presented with an entire list of interviews and accolades on various sites on the internet), you would think that this Filipino-Singaporean chef is a "celebrity-chef-extraordinaire" of the culinary world. However, if you had the chance to meet him personally (which you can if you visit the Bridge Bistro & Beacon Bar), you'll discover a humble, down-to-earth chap who just happens to able to whip up extraordinary delicacies in the kitchen. Chef Reynaldo, whose culinary education included a five-year stint in Michelin-starred restaurants in France, has held various key positions, the latest of which was at L’Angelus French Restaurant, where he was Group Executive Chef, in charge of kitchen operations for outlets such as L’Angelus French Restaurant, Le Carillon and Le Barrio Chino. Here at the Bridge Bistro & Beacon Bar, Chef Reynaldo doubles up as General Manager, supporting a small team of service crew throughout the week. Do drop in for a chat with Chef Reynaldo the next time you're in the Club, and better yet, sample his highlyrecommended creations.

REFRESHED AMBIENCE & DECOR FOR A BETTER DINING EXPERIENCE AT BRIDGE BISTRO & BEACON BAR In recent months, the Bridge Bistro & Beacon Bar at Level 2 of the Clubhouse underwent a "facelift" to refresh the ambience and environment. Members can look forward to new furniture, lighting, and an enhanced overall dining experience. With Chef Reynaldo onboard, members can expect a myriad of specialties - in particular, the famous Chili Crab Pasta... So come on over and sample the latest items on the outlet's menu. You'll not be dissappointed.

SSF CHARITY CAR WASH 25 FEBRUARY 2017

“Charity begins at home...” Thomas Fuller Ever heard of this saying – "Charity begins at home" – a belief that is strongly held by our family here in RSYC! It’s a commitment we take on as a family to help the less fortunate. In collaboration with Singapore Sailing Federation on the Saturday 25 February, we conducted a drivein Charity Car wash that received great positive response and support from our members. The beneficiary, metazone.org – a non-profit community of like-minded individuals who believes everyone can make a difference – provides many programs to help young sailors build and sustain skills useful to them and their future. You can find out more about the beneficiary here at www.metazone.org We’d also like to take this opportunity to once again thank all our members for their contribution and support.
