AT THE HELM
HONORARY SECRETARY’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members of RSYC, I hope you celebrated the start of a brand new year in good spirits with your friends and loved ones. On behalf of the Club, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation for your continuing support and commitment. 2018 will be a challenging but exciting year for RSYC. The marina is set to achieve full occupation after the completion of the long awaited wave screen at the end of 2017. The extension of H/I berth and conversion of J berth to accommodate larger yachts will add to the vibrancy of the marina while the management is preparing to attain accreditation in Gold Anchor International Rating scheme for Marinas. As part of its effort to promote sailing, the Club has been accredited by the Singapore Sailing Federation in conducting Dinghy Level 1 Proficiency and Keelboat Level 1 Competent Crew courses. The Club is working with schools and communities in West Coast to encourage more sailing activities in the Club. The annual RSYC Regatta provides an opportunity for sailing enthusiasts in various classes of boats to try their hand at competitive sailing. Planning for this year’s edition of the Regatta is already in full swing, and we look forward to a new record number of sailors signing up for the race. In conjunction with the launch of sea sports young membership, the Club is collaborating with Boat Shop Asia to bring in more sea sport activities for our younger members. Through this, we hope to attract more young adults, mainly students or fresh graduates from tertiary institutions, who will help to keep the club lively, vibrant and dynamic. A gymnasium is an indispensable part of a sport and recreation club like RSYC. The

upgrading and extension of the existing gym in the Club is underway to provide members with better and more modern gym facilities to manage their bodies’ fitness and health. Our search for a General Manager has concluded and a new GM from overseas will be joining the club to lead and work with the team to address service and work-flow issues so as to improve overall operational efficiency at the Club. With his extensive experience in the marina and hospitality industry, I am sure that the new GM will be able to provide our members with the experience of high-quality customer service each time they visit the Club. Even though it has been said many times and many ways by many flag officers, I feel I must repeat this familiar mantra: “RSYC is a members-owned club and, as such, its survival depends largely on its members’ support.” The unfailing support of members has been the main driving force for the Club to progress forward. To keep it going well into the future, we rely on our members' support in patronizing its F&B outlets, using its accommodation and other facilities and participating in the events and activities organized by the Club.
On behalf of the RSYC Committee, I take pleasure in wishing you and your family good health, happiness and prosperity in the year ahead. Cheers! Best Wishes, WEE KENG HWEE Honorary Secretary Republic of Singapore Yacht Club
As you are aware, members of the RSYC Committee and the various sub-committees are all volunteers from diverse backgrounds. They come forward to serve because they share the common goal of making RSYC a better club for all. We are always looking for more members to come forward to contribute their expertise to help take the Club further forward. If you wish join us in helping the club to continue to prosper and grow, please reach out and let us know. (Send your email to secretary@rsyc.org.sg)

Committee Members of Republic of Singapore Yacht Club presenting a cheque of S$313,000 to St Luke's Hospital
Chan Family Foundation presenting a cheque of S$250,000 to St Luke's Hospital
The RSYC Charity Golf 2017 held on 1 December 2017 was a resounding success with over $609,700 raised despite a 7-year lapse! The beneficiary of the charity drive is St Luke’s Hospital, and the money raised will go towards its programmes, treatment and services that will support the work towards caring for the needy patients and their families at the Hospital. The day’s activity began with a luncheon for almost 80 golfers at the Warren Golf & Country Club. It was a privilege to have Guest of Honour, Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry), Mr S. Iswaran, who is also the MP for West Coast GRC to join in the friendly competition alongside other golfers and graced the dinner gala in the evening. Immediately after the game, golfers adjourned to RSYC’s Nautical Ballroom for refreshing cocktails and a special curated eight-course Chinese fusion dinner by Chef Benny with live music performance by Skyjam.
Commodore Balakrishnan, in his welcome speech, thanked Minister S. Iswaran for gracing the event and briefly spoke about how RSYC as a member-owned club wishes to contribute to the society by organising more activities and charity events to engage the community. He also thanked all sponsors, donors and supporters for their generous contributions and making the event a great success. Special thanks were extended to Chan Family Foundation who has generously offered to donate on a “dollar-for-dollar” matching of funds raised capped at $250,000 and Hole-in-One Sponsor, Daimler South East Asia Pte Ltd. During the gala dinner, the top 8 golf scores and winners of the novelty games were announced. They each went home with prizes to commemorate their wins! Congratulations to Mr Bruce Wong for his hole-in-one achievement at Hole No 14.

The cheque presentation followed shortly after the prize giving. Commodore Balakrishnan and Mr Charlie Chan from Chan Family Foundation each presented a cheque to both Mr Jeyaraj Indra Raj, Honorary Secretary, Board of Director to St Luke’s Hospital and Associate Professor Tan Boon Yeow, CEO of St Luke’s Hospital as everyone applauded and cheered along. This was followed by a short thank you and inspiring speech by Professor Tan Boon Yeow. The day ended off with the presentation of appreciation plaques to platinum donors and Guest-of-Honour followed by a lucky draw session for golfers and diners. It was definitely a day and night to remember as everyone had a wonderful time for a good cause! We hope to see everyone again at our next charity drive! Kudos to the working committee spearheaded by Commodore Balakrishnan for organising this highly successful charity drive. It is undeniable that its hard work and dedication have led to a remarkable feat to raise over $609,700.00!

CHARITY CRUISE 9 DECEMBER 2017
Beneficiaries getting ready for the fun & adventure
After much preparation and hard work, we have finally come to the day of the RSYC Charity Cruise 2017! On that morning, we were blessed with clear skies and the nice cool weather for the entire day. 40 enthusiastic skippers and crews from 15 participating boats gathered as early as 7am to prepare for the day out at sea. At 9.30am, Chairman of West Coast Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC), Mr Andrew Chua (BBM), was warmly welcomed by the Organizing Committee to flag off the event. Excited children with their families from the West Coast community got on to their assigned boats with our members and looking forward to an exciting and fun filled day. Upon arrival at Pulau Hantu Kechil, participants were gathered and briefed about the activities lined up for them and the safety guidelines on the island. The ever-popular jet ski rides attracted many enthusiastic participants who queued up for their turn. They were also eager to hop on the towable “donut” float around the island’s bay.
Everyone enjoying themselves at Pulau Hantu
The great weather provided opportunities for the many first-timers at the island to go onboard the jet skis and family members stood along the beach to capture these happy moments on their cameras. Many of the children who were initially afraid to get wet and get sand in their feet, were quickly getting into the water and wanting to get on to the jet ski for a second and even a third ride! You can definitely see the fun and excitement written all over their faces! When it was time to return to RSYC, everyone washed up, packed their belongings and boarded their respective boats for the return trip.
The Charity Cruise 2017 Organizing Committee, RSYC Committee and The Management would like to say a big THANK YOU to all our members who came forward to contribute to this charitable event and we look forward to yet another fun filled and meaningful Charity Cruise next year!
Warm refreshments and treats awaited the children and families when they arrived back in RSYC. Thanks to Mr Jimmy Khoo and Mr Tan Kay Hum and many other generous members of RSYC, goodie bags were given to all beneficiaries, volunteers and staff as they were enjoying their refreshments. Skippers from all participating boat were given a momento dry bag from this Charity Cruise 2017 event to thank them for their kind contribution of their time and effort towards this successful event. We were also very glad to have other non boating members joining us for this event and hope more members can join us in the future too.

SISTERS' ISLAND MARINE PARK With effect from 20 Nov 2017, the waters around Sisters’ Islands, and along the western reefs of both St John’s Island and Pulau Tekukor, also known as Sisters’ Islands Marine Park, are demarcated for the conservation of marine organisms and designated as a marine park .
Boaters are also reminded to ensure continued compliance with the provisions of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (Port) Regulations, when transiting within the waters of the Sisters’ Islands Marine Park. Further information on the marine park may be accessed at the National Parks Board’s website (www.nparks.gov.sg/ gardens-parks-and-nature/parks-and-nature-reserves/ sisters-islands-marine-park).
The Big Sister's Island (Pulau Subar Laut) is open to the public from 7am to 7pm on a daily basis. All other areas within the Sisters' Islands Marine Park (Small Sister's Island and the reefs along the western coast of St John's Island and Pulau Tekukor) will be zoned strictly for conservation and research, and will not be open to the public.
REMINDER: BRING YOUR PPCDL CARD WHEN OUT AT SEA Recently, we have encountered cases where Members did not carry their PPCDL card when spot-checked by Police Coast Guard on duty. Please be reminded to bring along your valid PPCDL licensewhen you are out at sea. A photocopy of your license is also acceptable if you are afraid of losing your physical card. Your kind cooperation is much appreciated.
NO WAKE ZONE It has been reported recently of a spike in boats speeding in/out of our marina, potentially causing damage to the pontoon structure, members' boats as well as discomfort to fellow boaters. In a worst case scenario, this could also cause a “Man-Over-Board” situation to unsuspecting boaters or other users of the marina. In order to prevent this, we wish to remind all boaters entering/exiting our marina to adhere to the policy of “No Wake Zone”.
