AT THE HELM

HONORARY SECRETARY’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members,

experience each time they visit the Club.

I hope you welcomed the start of a brand new year in good spirits with family and friends. With the Chinese New Year celebrations coming so soon after, the Club continues to be abuzz with special events and seasonal fare in tune with the mood of the various festivities.

At the risk of sounding like a recording re-played many times over, I feel that I must take this opportunity to emphasize that RSYC is a members-owned club and, as such, its survival depends largely on its members’ support. We are justifiably proud that the Club has stood the test of time and celebrated its 190th anniversary last year. To keep it going well into the future, we need to have more members patronizing its F&B outlets, using its accommodation and other facilities and participating in the family-friendly activities organized by the management in collaboration with our various interest groups.

2017 will be a challenging but interesting year for RSYC. Work on the long awaited wave screen is set to commence in the first quarter. Periodic updates will be made available as the work progresses. When the project is completed, boating members can look forward to a “less rocky” experience in the waters of our marina. The Club’s signature event – RSYC Regatta – made a welcome return to the race circuit last July after a two-year hiatus. Planning for this year’s edition of the regatta is already in the works and we look forward to having an impressive line-up of seasoned sailors and various classes of boats in the battle for top honours. It is our hope that such events will inspire the young to try their hand at a sport that is often credited for its lessons in character development, team building and discipline. Our General Manager Mr Kellvin Ong is into his fifth month here at RSYC and has been kept very busy stabilizing the management team and addressing service and work-flow lapses so as to improve overall operational efficiency at the Club. With the expertise Mr Ong brings from over 33 years in the hospitality industry, I am sure we can count on him to give our members a more positive

If you have time to spare and the wish to contribute your expertise to help take the Club further forward, please let us know. On behalf of the RSYC Committee, I take pleasure in wishing you and your loved ones good health, happiness and prosperity in the year ahead. Cheers! GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE

Dear Members, As we usher in the new Year of the Rooster - first of all a big thank you to all Members who have generously contributed to this year’s Staff Hong Bao Fund. It’s encouraging to see that so many Members have participated in this fund dedicated to our employees and on behalf of all our staff – Thank You. 2016 ended with a bang – the New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Wharf and Foreshore saw an overwhelming response with a record turn up and a week before the event, we were fully booked. Unfortunately we had to turn away some Members due to the full capacity and we encourage Members to book early for this year’s celebration to avoid any disappointment. We will be doing a thorough spring cleaning at the Wharf in preparation for the Lunar New Year which will be closed on 3 and 4 January 2017. We have temporarily relocated operations to the Nautica Ballroom on these two days with a limited menu available. Do bear with us as we strive to improve our offerings and a cleaner environment. Do join us for a celebratory feast this Lunar New Year especially for the all important Reunion Dinner at either the Banquet Rooms (8-course set dinner) or at the Wharf (Steamboat Dinner) on 27 January

2017. Our popular festive goodies are also available from 6 to 27 January 2017 and you can place your order by simply completing the order form. As for the “Ren Ri” or “Everyman’s Birthday", we've prepared a specially created buffet spread at The Wharf on 3 February 2017. What is the Lunar New Year without the perennial favourite Lion & Dragon Dance which will be held on 29 January 2017 and 3 February 2017. Details of these are in this magazine. For the romantics, celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Foreshore with your loved ones over a romantic candlelight dinner under the stars on a beautiful evening is a must for the New Year. Do book early to avoid disappointment. We are pleased to announce the

commencement of the construction of the Wavescreen which many of our boaters are looking forward to in the first quarter of 2017, and we hope to have this completed by the end of the year. We are also starting our sailing activities soon and do watch out for news on this as we work towards the annual RSYC Regatta by mid-year. The Events & Sea Sport Department is working tirelessly to invigorate and introduce new activities to Members; such as shopping tours, golfing, workshops and many more. We welcome feedback and suggestion on what Members would like us to organise as we move to make our activities the talk of the Club.

We seek Members support to patronize

the various offerings at the Club especially bookings of the accommodation at Marina Lodge. Should Members have visitors or friends requiring accommodation, seminars or just to relax and take the day off, do check out our specials. I’m pleased to announce that our online booking portal is now "Live" and do make use of this hassle free medium. This leaves me to wish all of you a Happy and Prosperous Year of the Rooster. SOMETHING'S COOKING OVER AT THE BRIDGE BISTRO & BEACON BAR Members who had visited the Club in recent weeks, particularly at Level 2, may have noticed some renovation work being carried out at the Bridge Bistro & Beacon Bar. Indeed, the outlet was undergoing a facelift, and members can look forward to a refreshed look and ambience come February 2017. The bistro will be onboarding its new Chef Reynaldo Arriola as Head Chef and with that, a fresh and exciting menu can be expected by both members and guests. Coming up in February, members can expect a Valentine's Day promotion; and the outlet's management are planning for a "re-opening" in March where there promotions will showcase the unique delicacies from Chef Reynaldo. Everyone all set and ready to go!

CHARITY CRUISE 2016 5 NOVEMBER 2016

Light showers on Saturday 5 November 2016 did not dampen the spirits of the 40 participants or the members who came as early as 7am to prepare for the day out. Gracing the event, RSYC's Honorary Member, Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) and MP for West Coast GRC, Mr S Iswaran, was warmly welcomed by the organising committee, RSYC Committee and management. Mr Iswaran was quick to chat up with several participants at The Wharf, before proceeding to officially flag-off the flotilla who were headed to Pulau Hantu. Over at Pulau Hantu, the unreceding drizzle again did not deter those who came to have fun. While plans for the afternoon meal was slightly tweaked, the ever-popular jetski rides continued, as riders took "curious and adventurous" participants for thrilling rides around the island's bay. Before a heavier downpour ensued, everyone headed back to the Club, where warm refreshments and treats awaited them. The Charity Cruise Organising Committee, RSYC Committee and management would like to a big "Thank You" to all members who came forward to contribute to this charitable cause.

RSYC COMMODORE'S DAY FAMILY CARNIVAL 2016 20 NOVEMBER 2016

A crowd of high-spirited members and guests showed up on Sunday 20 November 2016 for Commodore’s Day Family Carnival to take part in a host of “carnival” activities around the Clubhouse.

Everyone's a winner Commodore's Day!

at

Commodore Wee Keng Hwee graced the occasion and gave a short welcome speech right after the traditional flag-raising ceremony of the Commodore’s ensign flag.

As it turned out, “Lady Luck” was kind enough to hold back the rain that afternoon for the carnival-goers to have some good fun at the myriad of games booths, food stalls, flea markets, sea sports try-outs and not to mention, the telematches at the pool, which proved to be popular among the kids. Another highlight of the event was the Pokemon Race and what’s a Pokemon Race without “Pikachu” – who came, posed for pictures, and delighted the diehard fans of the popular game. Lucky draw winners walked away with great prizes including an iPad Mini, a 32-inch LED TV and a classic bicycle! In all, everyone had an absolutely fabulous day at the Club, and a great start to the holidays. See you at next year’s Commodore’s Day!

CHRISTMAS EVE DINNER BUFFET 24 DECEMBER 2016

The evening was buzzing with the familiar classic tunes of yuletide and cheerful chatter from diners who came to celebrate the joyous season with family and friends. Apart from Santa and Santarina who paid a visit that evening, diners too donned "Santa's signature" red hat, as they tucked into seasonal classics such as Roasted Honey Ham, Chocolate Logcakes and more. Adding on to the atmosphere, a group of carollers performed renditions of popular Christmas tunes, entertaining both diners at The Wharf and members who visited the Club that evening. Needless to say, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves that evening and enthusiastically welcomed Christmas the very next day!

Beautiful renditions by the carollers set the Christmas mood for diners.

SEA SPORTS

Each of us may have a different reason for starting our boating life, it could be the sense of freedom you get from being at sea, the excitement you feel when you push the throttle forward, the thrill of trimming the sails just perfectly to make the most of the wind, or just simply a mode of transport to take you fishing – whatever the reason for starting, our love of boating is what brings us together (and probably what brought you to this article). At TheBoatShopAsia, we recognise that there are many phases in our Boating Life, and we aim to provide a service for each of these. If you have never set foot on a boat before, boat every day, have not touched a boat in years or simply can’t find the time to indulge in your boating passion as often as you like, then we can help get you out on the water. For newcomers, or for those unsure if boating is right for them yet, we run regular introductory events such as Island Tours, Beach BBQ’s, Sea Trials or even a quick Taster Session on a Power or Sail boat – really easy ways to try out the lifestyle with no commitment. For those preferring a more private experience, yacht charters start at as little as $280. With a fleet of yachts available in Singapore and across Asia, you can be sure that there’s an option to meet your requirements. Charter yachts can be provided with a Skipper and full crew, or for those with the required qualifications you can even charter bareboat, or self-drive.

Taking a bareboat charter is by far the best way to make the most out of your time at sea, and of course to enjoy this properly you need to be safe and competent on board the boat. To drive your own power boat in Singapore you need a Powered Pleasure Craft Driving License (PPCDL), this is a short course that can be taken at RSYC with discounted rates available to members. For PPCDL holders wanting to take a bareboat charter through TheBoatShopAsia, there’s a simple Competency Course available that runs you through the more practical aspects of boating such as how to plan and prepare for your trip, where to go, what activities are available and how to handle driving different types of power boats – usually a big step up from the PPCDL training boats! For sailors there are basic introductory courses and advanced keelboat courses available on RSYC’s own sail boats, all with discounted RSYC member’s rates available. These courses are all a great way to gain some experience of boating in a fun and safe environment with our expert trainers, setting you on course for the rest of your boating life. For those boaters preferring a more relaxed and “hands-off” experience, all yachts can be hired with Skipper and crew giving you more time to relax and enjoy your experience on board. A crewed charter is a great way to be taken to different destinations, or to try different activities that you may not have been aware of before. The best part of taking charters is that it gives you the opportunity to try many different types of boats if you are

30

considering buying one for yourself in the future. Do you prefer an open-deck day boat, need the creature comforts of a cabin cruiser or Flybridge, or absolutely must have live bait wells and tanks on board for your fishing trips? Why not try them all out and see what works for you. With no COE or even import duty applicable when buying a boat, it’s certainly an attractive (and not as expensive as you may think) option – the team at TheBoatShopAsia can source new or used boats locally or from overseas based on your requirements and budget. For boat owners, your berthing fees can be offset by chartering your boat out to other people when you’re not using it yourself, in many cases covering your running costs and more. You can provide your own crew, or use our pool of qualified, experienced Skippers. To make it even easier for you, TheBoatShopAsia can manage the whole process from marketing and advertising, through to booking and payment, to operating the charter and even cleaning the boat afterwards. So if you are new to boating, have been at sea all your life or anywhere in between, take a look at the different courses, events, charters and services we have to offer and see how we can help get you out on the water today! BUMBLEBEE SWIMS & SAILS AUTONOMOUSLY TO 4TH PLACE WIN AT MARITIME ROBOTX CHALLENGE Proving that they can overcome all challenges in and on the waters, the Bumblebee team emerged victorious at the recently concluded 2016 Maritime RobotX Challenge in Hawaii. Placed 4th, the team was the only finalist who had less than 4 months to work on their Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV) and also the only one featuring a fully undergraduate team. Leveraging on previous experiences in the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) competitions they have succeeded in, the team sent over 2 crates of spares and flew in one week early to prepare. The readiness enabled the team to cope with many of the issues faced on site. The team started fighting against the odds from Day 1. Winds and currents in Hawaii were almost double of what the thrusters could provide to steer the vehicle. The unknown rocky conditions destroyed 4 of the team's thrusters and propellers. Out of desperation the students consolidate all units available to debug, including a damaged customer returned unit from a local Hawaiian supplier. It was a relief that they were successful in their "surgeries" transplanting various components, and salvaged two sets to last the team through to the finals. The breakdown of one manipulator one day before the semi finals then caused an overcurrent into the main system, resulting in the main electrical hull having to be swapped out for a full set of spares overnight. The antennas and kill switches were also damaged but swapped out for new units.

concluding our long journey in preparation of ROBOTX. Steven Harta Prawira, 2016 RobotX Team Captain highlighted, "The results make it easy to forget all the challenges we have overcome to reach where we are today, but the team and all of our supporting crew and organisations back home has worked tirelessly and made countless sacrifices to deliver this. I'm immensely humbled by this achievement by our team under such tough circumstances, and am sure we will seek to do better than before in 2018." The team will be seeking new funding to continue engineering autonomous systems, and the goal is to complete a upgrade to the AUV, a complete redesign of the ASV based on lessons learnt, and deliver the integration of a fully automated Launch and Recovery system for the AUV from the ASV by RobotX 2018. Last but not least, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to our university, sponsors, families and friends for their unwavering support that made this journey possible. ABOUT THE TEAM The Bumblebee team has been flying the NUS flag high at autonomous underwater vehicle competitions since 2013, namely Robosub and Singapore AUV Challenge.

Overcoming hardware problems was just the beginning. Having insufficient time to tune and test our controls and movements of the USV back in Singapore meant intense pressure for the software team to deliver on-site, in a matter of days. This is to be done despite the sensors such as the LIDAR and GPS giving inaccurate data. The students all had very little sleep, with less than 4 hours every night. The challenge course was extremely difficult, and no teams completed the full course. The Bumblebee team relied heavily on their stronghold of acoustic localisation to complete some tasks,

NTU ANTI-FOULING PROJECT AT RSYC

The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club is proud to announce a newly forged partnership with a Nanyang Technological University (NTU). RSYC is glad to be able to contribute toward education and the environment by supporting the tertiary institute in conducting a research project on our premises. The research team headed by Professor David Fan from the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering in NTU, specialises in Ultrasonic NonDestructive Testing. Their current project in collaboration with RSYC involves testing and evaluating a new technique that utilizes active ultrasound to prevent marine biofouling on the hulls of vessels. Active ultrasonic anti-fouling is an environmentally favourable solution over antifouling paints which are toxic to marine life, but still widely used by the marine industry today. Although ultrasonic anti-fouling systems for small vessels are already commercially available, Professor Fan’s project seeks to re-define the technology and push boundaries by providing active ultrasonic anti-fouling at fraction of the energy and cost required by existing systems. The technology has already displayed promising results in laboratory tests, and the team is eager to test it in actual marine environment. Seeing this project to fruition could yield an effective and cost efficient system for a large range of vessels, from private yachts to commercial freighters alike. The project was successfully launched on 2 December 2016, and will last for a year, during which NTU will bear all associated costs. The experimental setup comes neatly packaged in a junction box and is inconspicuously located at the edge of the quay near the ramp. “We are very thankful for RSYC's eagerness to support our research experiment, and for granting us this opportunity to test our system in real marine conditions under the security of its premises,” says Professor Fan.
