AT THE HELM

HONORARY SECRETARY’S MESSAGE Dear fellow members,

draw them into the yachting lifestyle.

MILESTONES As Singapore gears up to celebrate its 50th anniversary of independence this year, we, at RSYC, will commemorate our 15th year of operation at the present clubhouse (since its official opening in June 2000).

MISSION RASI Fancy rowing 140 kilometres around Singapore in 24 hours? Well, some very determined people are going to be doing just that. And for a good cause too.

In keeping with the celebratory mood, a series of SG50-themed promotions will be rolled out throughout the year. All members will be able to enjoy these “specials” but if your birth year happens to be 1965, the deals will be particularly sweet for you. Details are being fine-tuned by the management team and will be announced on our e-newsletter and Facebook page in due course. 2015 looks to be an exciting year ahead and we hope to see an increase in members’ participation and patronage. You may already have noticed that the magazine you are now reading seems somewhat different from last year’s. It is. We have tweaked the format and finishing a little to give it a more contemporary look and feel with a distinct nautical theme. (For further information on how our magazine has evolved over the years, please refer to the write-up on pages 8 and 9.) YOUTH MEMBERSHIP Efforts to rejuvenate our ageing membership should gather greater momentum this year with the target to launch the Youth Membership in the second quarter. Our Sea Sports Department is being beefed up to take on the challenge of providing a comprehensive programme of entry-level activities (like sailing, canoeing and kayaking) to tertiary students and young working adults to

RSYC is proud to be one of the seed sponsors supporting the Mission RowAround-Singapore-Island (RASI) project in aid of the Mission to Seafarers – the world’s largest maritime welfare organization. We provide the space for them to store their boats and the base from which they do their weekly training on Saturdays. The event is scheduled for 22 and 23 April 2015. We hope that more sailing enthusiasts will come forward to enjoy an action-packed weekend.

plan to assemble a selection of items of historical significance for an exhibition that marks the Club’s milestones from 1965 to 2015. Look out for this in the month of August. On behalf of the RSYC Committee, I wish you happiness, success and good health in the year ahead. INEZ WEI Honorary Secretary Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

To run this event successfully, we will need a core group of experienced hands to serve as race officials. If you wish to volunteer to help, do drop us a line at info@rsyc.org.sg HERITAGE The labour-intensive job of getting our archival materials organized has been completed. We now have an impressive collection of photos, drawings, letters, meeting minutes and other paraphernalia from years gone by; cleaned, treated and catalogued for easy retrieval. AED MACHINE AT THE CLUB

The Club recently acquired an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine which is located in the Membership office to be used in times of emergency. The AED machine is a life-saving portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses irregular rhythms of the heart and treats the patient through the application of electrical therapy, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

The dates for RSYC’s signature event – the annual RSYC Regatta – which is usually in July, have yet to be fixed. Those who are interested in serving on the organizing committee, please make your interest known by emailing to info@ rsyc.org.sg

EXCELLENT SERVICE CAMPAIGN FROM JANUARY TO MARCH 2015 The Club will be kicking off its Excellent Service Campaign this January, which will run until March 2015. The objective of this campaign is to establish RSYC as a service-oriented organisation as well as to promote quality service to every member, guests and amongst staff.

So, if you happen to be particularly impressed by a staff’s outstanding service at the Club, please take a moment to fill up and submit an “Excellent Service Card” available at the Reception, Membership Office, Jackpot and KTV Rooms, F&B outlets and the Gymnasium.

Prizes will be awarded to the three top “Star Employees” with the most number of cards they have received.

WORK SAFETY CONTESTS FOR STAFF

In a bid to promote safety at RSYC among staff, the Club held a contest to test to raise awareness of the issue. The contest which was ran from 1 to 31 December 2014, required the staff to “Spot The Hazard” on a drawing depicting a scenario in a typical restaurant kitchen. There were a total of 30 entries and the winners – Kumar from Wharf and Margaret from Front Office – were each awarded a certificate of participation and a $50 voucher.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Some rowers from the Mission RASI team (from left): I Seng Hu (Yanto), Will Ellison, Kayla Feld, Dave Wisse, Lewis Hart, Rupert Bray, Mike Hickman, Mark Lewis, Iain Anderson and Ian Teare.

140 KILOMETRES AROUND SINGAPORE IN 24 HOURS

T

he Republic of Singapore Yacht Club is proud to be one of the seed sponsors supporting Mission RowAround-Singapore-Island (RASI) – a fundraising project initiated by veterans and professionals of Singapore’s maritime industry with an aim of raising S$750,000 (£375,000) in aid of the Mission To Seafarers – the world’s largest maritime welfare organisation. Officially launched on 11 September 2014 in London, the initial idea for momentous challenge was conceived between three friends – Mr Iain Anderson, Mr Ian Teare and Mr Lewis Hart – which swiftly garnered the interest of many others within the maritime and insurance community in Singapore and London. Over 70 people are involved in this project on water and on shore; along with an organising team of seven experienced individuals – Mr Iain Anderson (Maritime lawyer and partner at Reynolds Porter Chamberlain, Singapore), Captain Frederick Francis (Senior Lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic and Head of International Maritime Programmes at Singapore Maritime Academy), Mr Lewis Hart (Executive Director at Willis, Singapore), Captain Lee Wai Pong (Executive Director of Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration and Chairman of the Singapore Branch, Mission To Seafarers), Mr Mark McGurran (Regional Manager with Global Maritime), Mr Ian Teare (Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, Singapore) and Mr Tim Lambert (CEO and owner of Centaurs Group).

“I know it sounds a bit of a daft idea but it’ll be great fun. As we started to talk to our friends and colleagues in the market, we got a core group of people together who were keen to take part – both in the boats and in the support flotilla. We now have a training squad of over 40 rowers and 20 support crew. It is a serious challenge. Each rower will have to do six two-hour rowing shifts as the boats make their way around the island. Heading out into the Straits of Singapore – one of the busiest stretches of water on the planet – in the midday tropical heat is going to be tough.” said Mr Iain Anderson.

With no luxuries or comforts of home on board these rowing boats, the rowers will be have to endure two hours of continuous rowing on choppy waters at each shift under the open skies. A flotilla of support vessels will, however, be on standby in case of any emergency. This exciting event – scheduled to take place on 22 and 23 April 2015 – will coincide with Singapore Maritime Week 2015 and also in celebration of Singapore’s 50th anniversary of independence. The event – planned to start and end at the Merlion at Marina Bay – will undoubtedly be one of the most gruelling challenges these rowers may ever face, especially in Singapore’s tropical climate. Since the boats arrived here at RSYC in early November 2014, the Mission RASI team has been training hard every Saturday, from mid-morning till afternoon; and apart from the arduous training, they’ve also been busy holding a range of fundraising activities across the island – all of which will go towards raising funds for the Mission To Seafarers. The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club wishes the team members of Mission RASI great success in its endeavour.

As part of this project, a team of 40 rowers will take on the formidable task of rowing 140 kilometres (approximately 75 nautical miles) clockwise around Singapore within 24 hours on two rowing boats. The team will

ABOUT THE MISSION TO SEAFARERS Founded in 1856, the Mission To Seafarers (MTS) provides help and support to over 1.5 million seafaring men and women who face hardship and danger daily to keep our global economy afloat. Through a global network of chaplains, staff and volunteers, MTS works with over 260 ports in over 70 countries, caring for seafarers of all ranks, nationalities and beliefs; and offering practical, emotional and spiritual support to seafarers through ship visits, drop-in centres where a range of

welfare and emergency support services is available. Funded by voluntary donations, the MTS have established Flying Angel Centres in over 100 ports to provide a ‘home away from home’ for seafarers – some of whom may have been at sea for up to two years. At these centres, they can enjoy some time away from their ship and get in touch with their loved ones through internet and phone facilities.

7

In an emergency, the MTS is often the only help available to seafarers. No matter what problems seafarers may face – injury, abandonment, non-payment of wages or personal difficulties – they can rely on the local mission for help, advice and support where our chaplains and volunteers offer practical and financial support, advocacy services, family liaison or simply a space to talk in a time of crisis. HERITAGE

GETTING NEWS ACROSS TO MEMBERS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS Many would agree that communications is central to any community or organisation, especially so in a members’ club like RSYC. With the advent of smart devices along with an ever-increasing popularity of social networks and various communication channels, the humble printed magazine still remains to be one of the most popular tools for getting messages across to a targeted audience. From this issue of the magazine onwards, we made some visual tweaks to keep it fresh and in line with contemporary trends. The inside pages have been simplified, utilizing icons at the top for easy reference; while the bottom of the page displays the page numbering within a nautical element along with the Club’s website and Facebook addresses. The covers have been given a new treatment known as “Matt Lamination with Spot UV Varnishing”, while the logo on the masthead have been slightly enlarged for prominence. We take a walk down memory lane and see how our magazines (or newsletters, as it was once known) have evolved throughout the years, where you’ll notice the different design elements and visuals that reflect the times and tastes back then.

1&2– The monthly RSYC Newsletter from March 1984 is a 2-colour newsletter measuring 21.3cm by 18.3cm and was printed on woodfree paper. RSYC’S INAUGURAL ANNUAL DINNER

F

riday 21 November 2014 marked a celebratory occasion at the Club as over 150 members and guests came together to celebrate RSYC’s achievements over the years and reminisce the bittersweet memories of the days when RSYC had to irrefutably move from its former clubhouse in Jalan Buroh to its current location here at 52 West Coast Ferry Road. Members and guests who arrived early, mingled over small bites and cocktails; and some even took the rare opportunity to visit the rooftop of the Marina Lodge for a spectacular view of the evening skies over the marina. Commodore Wee Keng Hwee commenced the evening with a rousing welcome speech, highlighting RSYC’s facilities and encouraging members to utilize the Club as a venue for their social activities and entertainment. Commodore Wee aptly ended his speech, lauding the “old hands” of the Club – Honorary Member Dr Tan Cheng Bok, RSYC’s first Singaporean Commodore Mr Francis Lee, Life Member Dr Harry Ho, Life Member Mr Frank Schulz, Life Member Mr Gordon Maxted and Life Member Mr Edward Wong – each of whom played an instrumental role towards RSYC’s development and progress. For dinner, members and guests had a chance to sample specially prepared creations by Chef Seak Wai; while vocalists Joanna Dong and Rob Williams delivered exceptional entertainment accompanied by a 4-piece jazz ensemble. More fun was provided by MC Colin Seet, who got members and guests on their feet with light-hearted games and quizzes.

Members and guests also had the pleasure of having Rear Commodore Tan Kay Toh, Former Commodore Francis Lee and Honorary Member Dr Tan Cheng Bok on stage; all of whom shared humorous anecdotes from the past and reminded us to keep our spirits up as we face inevitable challenges ahead of us. All in all, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening and left with good memories plus a special souvenir to take home. The RSYC Committee and management wishes to thank all who came and supported the event; and we look forward to organising the event again in 2015.

Phytoplankton - Diatom

Zooplankton - Barnacle Nauplius

SMALL BUT IMPORTANT

PLANKTON OF RSYC Plankton are marine organisms that cannot swim well enough to resist water currents, instead, they can only drift (the word is based on the Greek “planktos”, meaning “wanderer”). They are usually microscopic, but there are larger types too, including jellyfish and some floating seaweed. Plankton that spend their entire life drifting are called holoplankton, while those that spend part of their lifecycle as plankton are called meroplankton and are often the larvae of familiar sea creatures such as crabs and barnacles. Plankton can also be divided into phytoplankton and zooplankton. Phytoplankton are equivalent to plants on land as they photosynthesise and produce food for animals. Zooplankton, on the other hand, either feed on phytoplankton or on each other. They are the main nutrient source for other marine organisms and link the photosynthesisers to the “higher” level marine organisms. Plankton are critical to the healthy functioning of marine ecosystems, hence studying them is important. Some phytoplankton are responsible for the occasional algal blooms that Singapore experiences. The blooms occur due to nutrient input and can reduce oxygen levels in the water, which causes problems for all sorts of marine animals. More generally, there is much we do not know regarding the diversity and abundance of both phytoplankton and zooplankton in Singapore. Hence, sampling plankton in local waters is useful for learning about what species we have here as well as giving us a better understanding of the health of Singapore’s coastal environment. The study of plankton is a science (that would broadly come under “marine ecology”) and scientists need to be trained! This is why every year the National University of Singapore (NUS) brings students like us to RSYC to learn plankton sampling techniques. The students are usually from the Life Sciences programme, specialising in Environmental Biology. The field trip to RSYC is part of our 3rd year class called “Ecology of Aquatic Environments” where

we learn about both marine and freshwater ecology. We use a simple plankton net, that looks a bit like a wind sock, and slowly pull it though the water with a length of string and short pole. One sample usually involves pulling it for 50 or 100 m, after which we retrieve it and empty the contents into bottle. We also collect water quality data such as temperature, salinity, light penetration, and dissolved oxygen. After all the students have had a chance to participate, the samples are taken back to the laboratory at NUS and examined through microscopes. The plankton will still be alive and it is really quite exciting to see them whizzing and wriggling around in the water. We try to identify as many species as possible, which can be very difficult, and we count them too. In September and October 2014, we also conducted a small plankton project at RSYC as part of another class called “Aquatic Ecology Research”, a key module for the Minor in Aquatic Ecology at NUS, which we are both enrolled in. We wanted to see whether there was a difference in plankton diversity between two depths (0.5 m and 2 m). Various conditions can change with depth, especially the level of light available. Again, we pulled a plankton net for 50m to collect each sample, but this time we had to construct a special holder with a long pole so we could keep the net at 2m depth. Although we found some different species at the two depths, overall there was not much change. This is probably due to the water, and therefore the plankton, being mixed by the boats coming and going from the ferry jetty just south of RSYC. We really appreciate that RSYC welcomes NUS students to come and practice these essential field skills. It is great to get out of the lecture theatre and be involved in some hands on learning. The experience has helped us to better understand the plankton that lives in the sea around Singapore and makes all the book learning worthwhile! Goh Qian Yi and Fong Jia Min (Year 3 NUS students)
