COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear fellow members,

IN REVIEW

The Club faced a few challenges in 2014. The Committee made a very difficult decision to close the Bridge restaurant in February due to declining patronage and manpower constraints. Jones Lang LaSalle was engaged to be our intermediary in searching for a suitable tenant with fresh dining options for members. We hope a new operator will come onbaord soon. Breakdown of our forklifts at the marina caused inconvenience to some boaters between March and June. Both Marina Bulls have since been repaired and in operation from end June. Maintenance regime of the forklifts was reviewed, training of forklift drivers in servicing the forklift was carried out and a more reliable company for maintenance of the machines was appointed. All these are put in place to prevent similar occurrence in future. One major accomplishment this year is the opening of our Marina Lodge Extension Wing, which went into full operation in January 2014. Do give your support by patronizing the Marina Lodge, where you and your guests can enjoy exceptionally special rates for the stay. Other areas of improvements include the new children’s playground which was installed in June 2014. Replacement of three pontoons in the wet berth and major repairs of pontoons at the Lay-by were completed in August 2014. In March the Committee passed a resolution to loan the original Lipton Cup to Singapore Sports Museum for a minimum display period of three and a maximum of five years. The Singapore Sports Museum (SSM) was opened on 9th October and the original Lipton Cup is being placed in a prominent location in Gallery 2 – ‘Chasing the Dream’ where it showcase the early sports clubs with strong heritage in Singapore. The committee was happy to see the industry’s “old hands” joining our key management team – General Manager Trevor De Silva, Marina Manager Chan Nai Eng and Executive Chef Chua Kim Hai. Their experience and professionalism are necessary in bringing the Club up to next higher level.

We are pleased to announce and welcome Mr S Iswaran – Minister, Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for Trade and Industry – who has graciously accepted our invitation to become our fifth Honorary Member. We look forward to more collaborations with the West Coast Grassroots organisation, where Mr Iswaran is MP of the West Coast GRC.

LOOKING AHEAD

Year 2015 marks the Club’s 15-year anniversary at our present clubhouse and the management and committee are working to create more social and recreational activities for members; which ultimately bring members back to the Club. Further development of the Club include construction of breakwater along our main pontoon along the West Coast Pier and a wet berth at H and I for larger yachts – details of which are being worked out by the committee. More information will be made available to members in due time.

Dear Members, We are coming to the end of a very eventful 2014. The Oktoberfest was a great success, with a record number of tickets sold and the open air atmosphere of the Foreshore Deck helped enhance the fun mood for our annual beer fest. See pages 16 to 18. We want to carry on this party mood till the New Year’s Eve Countdown event on 31 December 2014.

FOOD & BEVERAGE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS The Events Team is planning weekends of fun for your kids at RSYC. We will set up the bouncy castle at the pool on Saturdays and Sundays in the daytime, and screen wholesome family movies during the evenings, just after dinner time. This will be a perfect way to spend your weekends at the Club. The team is also planning a 3-day workshop for the children that will add something meaningful to their leisure time. The programme details can be found on page 6.

MARINA LODGE Don’t forget to use your 30% discount at the Marina Lodge during the school holidays. Why not stay at your RSYC home, and avail yourselves of the activities being planned for your family. Bring your friends along, because the discount applies to all room categories, including our suite apartments. This discount applies to two rooms per day for each principal member.

NEW YEAR’S EVE COUNTDOWN The Events Team is also planning an evening extravaganza on 31 December. They are planning a Pirates’ Party around the pool and Foreshore area,

The Chef is planning a special Sunday Brunch on 30 November, to celebrate the Western tradition of Thanksgiving. There will be a Roast Carvery station, with stuffed turkey and ham to celebrate this day, which celebrates the harvest festival tradition in North America. Pre-order your sparkling wines early to make this a truly festive occasion. The Chef has planned for several delectable Christmas items that you can pre-order from RSYC. These readyto-eat treats can be served directly for your home or office parties, without having to be recooked. Please refer Christmas Goodies Order Form in this magazine to place your orders. The Christmas Eve Buffet Dinner on Wednesday 24 December is a party for the family. Chef is planning a menu that will appeal to kids and grown-ups alike, but more importantly, we are arranging for Santa Claus to arrive by speedboat and deliver presents to the kids. If you have a present that you want Santa to give personally to your child, please register via email to events@rsyc.org. sg with your name, your child’s name and a short description of the gift; and deliver the gift to us by Wednesday 17

December, so we will have time to wrap and tag it. In this way, your child will feel extra special by receiving his or her own personal gift from Santa.

OTHER MATTERS Our neighbours at the Marine SCDF have informed us that they will be renovating their station from November 2014 till March 2015. As such, they have alerted us to the possibility of construction noise and dust during operational hours. They said they will try their best to keep any inconvenience to a minimum for our members and guests. In conclusion, I hope to see you around the Club during this festive and holiday period, and on behalf of the staff of RSYC, may I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. RENOVATIONS BY NEIGHBOURING SCDF TILL MARCH 2015

The neighbouring Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) Fire Station located next to the clubhouse will be undergoing renovations, which will last until March 2015. Patrons at the Wharf will likely be affected during this period. The Club is working closely with SCDF to minimize any disruption or inconvenience during this period. We seek members’ understanding and cooperation in this matter.

VISIT BY BUSAN CITY OFFICIALS Several city officials from Busan City, Korea, visited RSYC on Tuesday 30 September, and were brought for a tour of the clubhouse by GM Trevor De Silva. The guests were here to visit Singapore marinas and clubs in preparation for building a marina in Busan City.

This year, RSYC is once again organising the Annual Charity Cruise, but with a slight difference. It will benefit some 60 persons from West Coast ComCare who probably won’t ever get a chance to go on a boat trip to Pulau Hantu for a day’s picnic or experience the thrill of a jet-ski ride! Gracing the event on Saturday 22 November is MP for West Coast GRC and Minister in the PM’s Office, Mr S Iswaran, who will flag off the boats from RSYC Marina. This will be a great time for bonding and giving back to our community! So if you have a boat, and/or a jet-ski and some spare time, do join in the fun! Donations in cash or kind are also welcome. Learn To Waltz Conducted by experienced instructor Ben Teo, Waltz is a moderately fast dance where dancers move in perpetual spins and taking a step to each beat of the music. oktoberfest 2014 On Friday 19 September 2014, over 150 members and their guests at the Oktoberfest 2014 had a fun-filled evening with games, a delicious spread of German delicacies and of course... beer and more beer! The event was held outdoors at the Foreshore Deck where members and guests were treated to authentic entertainment from the Swiss Alpine Lions – with games and quizzes providing extra entertainment for the attendees, many of whom sportingly took up the “challenges”! Many thanks to all members and guests who came and supported the event. Special thanks to Club member and emcee for the evening Mr Nigel Ho for livening up the event! BYLAWS ON BOAT OWNERSHIP AT RSYC The management would like to highlight the bylaws on boat ownership as detailed under clause 6.13. For your reference, the clause is reproduced below. 6.13

BOAT OWNERSHIP

6.13.1

Only Members may be Owners and co-Owners of boats registered at the RSYC.

6.13.2

When Ownership of a boat is transferred to a non-RSYC Member, the following procedures shall prevail:

6.13.2.1

The new Owner is given 30 days from the date of change of Ownership to apply for Membership at the RSYC and to submit the required Entrance fee. Altenatively, he may remove the boat from the RSYC Premises after settling any outstanding charges to the RSYC in respect of the boat.

6.13.2.2

He shall be required to pay immediately the visitor fees for use of the RSYC facilities, i.e. the monthly dues as well as the mooring fees and other charges as may be necessary, during the 30-day period.

6.13.2.3

Should the new boat-Owner’s application for Membership not be accepted, he shall be required to remove the boat immediately from the RSYC Premises.

Since early this year, we have been implementing this new Launch & Recovery of boats by SMS programme. Members with boats on the Dry Stack need not worry that the phone lines are busy or no one is attending to it. For launching or recovery of boats, please provide the following information and send it via SMS to 9 855 3841: • Name of boat owner • Membership number • Boat name / MPA Registration Number • Expected time of usage.
