Rear Commodore Mr Albert Fong attended National University of Singapore (NUS)’s Team BumbleBee Sponsor Appreciation Event on 14th March 2019. The students and professors were very happy and appreciative of RSYC continuous support of their project to allow them to conduct their robotic trials in our marina. They mentioned about the huge time, logistics and cost saved from our support. More importantly, RSYC’s support has enabled them to focus their full effort on the project. Eventually, they successfully placed Singapore on the world map by the achievement of 1st Place at the biennial Maritime RobotX Challenge, held in Honolulu, Hawaii and 2nd Place at the International Robosub Competition, held in San Diego, California. Maritime RobotX Challenge is a biennial international maritime robotic competition held for 15 leading universities from Asia, Australia and US. Congratulations to Team Bumblebee for the great achievement and RSYC will continue to support them in whatever way we can.

RSYC had the pleasure of hosting John & Neal, members of Waikiki Yacht Club from Hawaii, USA on 21st April 2019. They were given a tour of RSYC premises by Sales & Membership Manager, Mr Jackson Lim who is also the Duty Manager for the day. Mr Jackson Lim exchanged burgees between the two clubs and presented the Three Burgees Heritage book for them. He also invited his members to visit and stay with us whenever they visit Singapore. Waikiki Yacht Club (WYC), situated at the edge of Honolulu’s Ala Moana Beach Park and the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, is one of the premier yacht clubs in the Pacific. It has been the home to sailboat racers and fishing enthusiasts since 1944. The club welcomes sailors to its docks and extends reciprocity to visiting yacht club members from around the world. GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE

GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE Dear Members, Firstly, I would like to thank all members and guests who came and supported the Easter Day Brunch on 21st April 2019. Diners gathered at La Pizzeria at the Bridge & Beacon Bar and tucked into the sumptuous spread of buffet brunch with kids enjoying the fringe activities including Egg Painting, Egg Hunting and Relay planned out for them. We have successfully completed the expansion and redevelopment of the H, I & J rows of pontoon in April and are in the midst of waiting for authority’s approval to host new superyacht of up to 120foot. We look forward to the opportunities ahead and are quietly optimistic that Marina will have a good financial year ahead as the Club fulfils the growing regional demand for berthing facilities. Singapore Yacht Show was held from 11th to 14th April 2019 at One Degree 15 Marina Cove and RSYC was glad to participate as one of the exhibitors again this year. We were there to build on our brand awareness as well as to let more boat owners know about our newly-built pontoons and superyacht berths and also remind them about the completion of our breakwater which made the marine a more conducive berthing environment than before. Added bonus would also be having more members join us as a family! It was a successful marketing event as we managed to gather prospective berth buyer and social members. In early 2019, RSYC have decided to outsource the sailing academy to The Boat Shop Asia (TBSA) in order to tap on their expertise and expand the sailing team. With the helping hands of TBSA, RSYC hope to continue the spirits of Sea Sports to all directions without any broderies nor barriers.

In addition, we will be starting the Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) Sailing project in the upcoming months. BBBS is a group of enthusiastic sailors and volunteers in Singapore striving to cultivate sustainability in the community. They teach secondary school students how to sail on different kinds of sailing boat and to let them discover what it takes to be a mentor. These students also have a chance to meet and sail with corporate leaders. For a start, RSYC plan to have at least 2 sailing courses a month and RSYC members’ children are free to join these programme too. More details will be shared in due course. Besides that, we will also be engaging BBBS volunteers’ help in the upcoming Regatta in July. On 21st April 2017, RSYC and National University of Singapore Sailing Team (NUSST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote sea sports activities, particularly sailing, and environmental consciousness in the West Coast area. Since then, NUSST has been using our marina for sailing sessions before participation in any major regatta and they have achieved the top 3 positions in many local and national regatta. RSYC management will continue working with NUS and other schools and communities in West Coast to promote more sailing and sea sports activities in the Club. This year, Commodore’s Day is back on the 9th June 2019 and we are featuring a Summer Fun Carnival, an all-day play carnival for the family. It aims to encourage laughter, bonding and outdoor fun! Expect delectable delights at pop up food stalls, fun carnival games, great whiskey and beer promotion at pool party till late night, live mermaid performance and fringe activities including slime workshop for the kids! Have a splashing fun time at our marina with Gladiator, Giant Inflatable Climbing Wall and Blob & Tower. We also

provide water tryout on our jetskis. It’s guaranteed to be an enjoyable day for both young and old! And finally, our 2019 Regatta is now underway in July and we are excited to bring this race back again on the 20th, 21st and 27th July after a successful event last year. So, sailors do support the event, gather your team and join our annual event to make it a success. The Regatta Organizing Team is also looking for sponsorship for this event and your participation/ contribution is most welcomed. Do contact our Marcom Department for more details. Lastly, I look forward to your continued support in our events and ongoing promotion. My door is always open to feedback on how services and activities can be improved and I look forward to seeing you and your family around the club more often. Best regards, CLAUDIO SCHETTINO General Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

RSYC MISSION STATEMENT To build upon our rich tradition as Singapore’s premier yacht club, member-owned and affordable, and providing the best sea sports facilities with excellent amenities.

AMMONITE INTERVIEW WITH CAPTAIN RICCARDO RSYC was privileged to have Sail Yacht Ammonite at our humble marina from 25th March 2019 to 20th April 2019. They were here for a stopover for maintenance works before heading back to Italy. We are honoured to speak to the captain of Sail Yacht “Ammonite, Mr Riccardo who shared with us more about the beautiful yacht. RSYC: Do introduce us to SY Ammonite and her owner. Captain Riccardo: AMMONITE is a 24.72m luxury yacht, owned by Australian Marcus Blackmore who has long been a passionate sailor. Marcus wanted a yacht for racing and cruising thus he has customised Ammonite to be both sleek yet competitive. We have a high modulus spar fitted with halyards lock as well as boom reef locks. This makes both a very secure and safe system for ocean crossing as well as a neat racing feature with less load on mast and rigging. Her lifting keel rises her draft from 4.7 to 3.0 metres for best righting moment under

During the first leg, we stopped in Saint Elena island with the designer to create a light, fresh but homey feeling in her Cabo Verde and Gibraltar. After arrival in Sardinia, we raced interior. Her hull is extremely light and stiff thanks to the use of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta. Right after the race, owner carbon fibres and infusion technique. It is a pleasure French Polynesia where owner and guests joined in for cruising to work for such great people. Everywhere we go, they are the first in the beautiful waters of the pacific. Samoa was an obvious to engage with locals and always extend more help in the more stop since Marcus is an honorary chief in one of the villages. We then sailed to Tonga to pay visit to one of Marcus’s best friend, Don McIntyre who under the flag of the Royal Nomuka RSYC: Can you tell us a little about your adventures with SY Ammonite? Yacht Club (GGR 2018) bought us to a scientific expedition and went swimming with whales. It was an incredible experience swimming very close to these beautiful huge gentle giants and their calves. Arriving in Fiji sounded like entering in our back yard. Marcus and Caroline together with their guests often visit Fiji from Australia and have built many connections with the locals in the area. Sailing out of Fiji was sad but we knew we would have come back after a season in New Zealand. We spent the southern summer in Auckland for a small refit and to race the Millennium cup. Once back in the Pacific, we cruised again in the beautiful Fiji before moving to Raja Ampat, West Papua. This area was both remote and beautiful, especially for the divers – imagine beautiful underwater colours, multitude of corals and different species of fish. Raja Ampat was our last stop before Singapore. RSYC: Could you share with us your regatta experience? Captain Riccardo: We have done many regattas with Ammonite. After Superyacht Ammonite’s maiden voyage, we took part at the Loro Piana regatta in Porto Cervo . At the end of the same summer 2016, we competed in the Rolex maxi regatta. In November 2016, we raced across the Atlantic in the ARC arriving just after VOR 70

and the old Whitbread glory Fisher and Paykel. In March 2017, we raced again in the Loro Piana Superyacht regatta this time in the beautiful islands of BVI Caribbean Sea. We arrived in New Zealand in November 2017 after the pacific crossing. We raced in the Millennium cup 2018 and won first. Our next regatta will be the Loro Piana in Porto Cervo in June after completion of a full circumnavigation through the two canals (Panama and Suez). During this event we will fight for the Southern Wind Trophy against other Southern Wind boats. RSYC: What is a memory that never fails to make you smile during your adventures? Captain Riccardo: Arriving in beautiful places after having crossed an ocean is like overlooking from the height of a mountain after a long hike. It is rewarding and somehow enriching. Seeing a group of kids during welcome party kicking you a soccer ball or a throwing you a rugby ball and watching their smiles and curious laughter are disarming and heart-warming moments. Every place is a memory and every memory is a smile. It can be as simple as a shy look of that lady from behind her home door while weaving a carpet or carving a bowl. Some of the villages we have visited are so remote that they have supplier vessels 6 times per year. We are very fortunate because Marcus and Caroline engage a lot with the local community and we became part of it. More often than not, they leave behind big donation to those less fortunate villages.

8

RSYC.ORG.SG

We always carry giveaways to these villagers. Reading glasses are seen as gift from God and for God. Many old ladies was given the reading glasses once they have been assessed by our expert crew member Lionel for eyesight. They are extremely thankful because they are once again able to find the comfort of the bible or their preferred sacred book. RSYC: Could you share with us more about the charitable acts SY Ammonite has done? Captain Riccardo: Beside leaving fishing gears, school supplies and toys for kids; leaving basic tools and reading glasses for elderlies, we together with another New Zealand cruiser, delivered an emergency diesel generator for the school in Vulaga in the southern part of Lao group, Fiji. The owner also decided to financially support the building of a community hall which act as tsunami refuge. This is not the only time Marcus and Caroline silently make donation to villages, at least three schools villages in Fiji benefit from their generosity. The Royal Nomuka Yacht Club in Tonga receive funds from Marcus for a youth sailing program as well as some scientific research and corals preservation. These are just a few things I am aware of but I am sure that they do more not expecting to be publicised. RSYC: Is Singapore a good place to start their adventure? It is very expensive but you can get most of the services and spare parts in Singapore (once you find the shop that likes racing, the Raja Muda, King’s cup and Langkawi sailing week gives plenty of fun in a three months loop. For those who like cruising, Koh Samui as well as the Anambas and Bali are beautiful cruising spots at a short hop from the big City.sell it). Starting an adventure from Singapore is great as any direction offers something good to do.

Captain Riccardo: I would sincerely thanks RSYC and its staff starting with whom I personally met for a great welcoming and genuine hospitality. I booked a place in a Marina and I found a club with profound history and great sports and moral values that have been transmitted by every member, guest or staff. Being part of such a great Club has filled my heart with a sense of belong and pride.

RSYC: What would you say to someone who is inspired by this adventure? Captain Riccardo: Just go, leave your fears behind, bring nothing but what you really care for, live light and leave full of renewed energy. Set your sail and open your heart, you will never look back. As you can see, Sailing for me is a state of mind, a metaphysic example of a simple but rich life. Although I am a professional sailor and the sea is my office, I am never sick when I leave a harbour. The sadness of saying goodby to old friends is never as bad as the excitement to go discover other places and meet new friends in the next harbour. RSYC: Any ending words for our members?

RECIPROCAL CLUB

RECIPROCAL CLUB FEATURE: ROYAL HONG KONG YACHT CLUB Founded in 1890, The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) is one of the oldest and largest sports clubs in Hong Kong, with a rich, colourful history that spans 170 years of community and competitive sailing and rowing. It was the only Hong Kong club that kept the “Royal” in its title post-handover, although its Chinese name is simply the Hong Kong Yacht Club. The RHKYC provides training programmes for practitioners of all abilities and ages -- both members and non-members -- to nurture their development, produce elite athletes capable of competing at the highest levels, and contribute to the growth and popularity of these great pastimes. The Club also organises a full calendar of high-profile local and international race events, helping place Hong Kong firmly on the global sporting map. Unsurprisingly, their membership is contingent on an interst in rowing or sailing The main buildings of the club are located by Victoria Harbour on the former Kellett Island, now part of Causeway Bay following land reclamation, and forming the western boundary of the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter. In addition to Kellett Island, the club has two other clubhouses: on Middle Island and in Shelter Cove, Sai Kung. The Marine also looks after a total of 350 moorings split between Kellett Island, Shelter Cove, Shelter Cove Marina, Aberdeen, Middle Island and Jade Bay.

The club has the following facilities:

• Swimming Pool • Gymnasium • Children’s Playroom • Youth Club Room • Snooker • Sports Bar • Bowling Alley • Private Function Venues • Restaurant • Squash Courts

SINGAPORE YACHT SHOW 11 - 14 APRIL 2019

Singapore Yacht Show was held from 11th to 14th April 2019 at ONE 15 Marina Club and RSYC was glad to participate as one of the exhibitors again this year. We were there to build on our brand awareness as well as to let more boat owners know about our newly-built pontoons and superyacht berths and also remind them about the completion of our breakwater which made the marine a more conducive berthing environment than before. Added bonus would also be having more members join us as a family! It was a successful marketing event as we managed to network with other exhibitors, gather prospective berth buyer and meet potential social members.

NUS SAILING TEAM Background of NUS Sailing Varsity Team

Merely a stone’s throw away from the National University of Singapore, RSYC has been home to the NUS Sailing Varsity Team since its establishment in 2017. As at 2019, the team comprises approximately 40 undergraduates from diverse faculties, including Arts & Social Science, Business, Computing, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Yale-NUS. These include first-time sailors to even world champions. Bonded by a common passion for sailing, the team pursues sailing as an avenue for achieving sporting excellence, character building, and community engagement.

Their Journey

The privileged partnership with RSYC has enabled the NUS team to lay a solid foundation for its pursuits. It has equipped the team with valuable logistical support to conduct weekly sailing activities, introductory sailing courses, and to represent RSYC-NUS in competitions. With such support, the team—led by a group of passionate sailors—has built a worthy reputation in the local sailing scene. Over the past 2 years, at the team’s initiative, more than a hundred NUS students have experienced sailing at RSYC. Further, the team has nurtured 60 new sailors to obtain their Level 1 Dinghy Proficiency certification, of which 40 were obtained at RSYC in 2018. Many have since taken on sailing as a new recreation, pursuing it at RSYC almost every weekend.

RSYC.ORG.SG

SEASPORTS RSYC’s J24—RSYC Dua—has served the team well on many levels and is an icon of the RSYC-NUS partnership. Typically, the team would take the J24 out for training, practising their sailing skills, teamwork, and gaining experience through each weekend. On several memorable occasions, the team even cruised on the J24 to Lazarus Island for a day adventure. Beyond recreational sailing, the team has also brought glory to RSYC, by sailing RSYC Dua to victory at the RSYC Regatta, Raffles Marina-Western Circuit Regatta, and Changi Sailing Club J24 National Championship. Notable representations (on other classes) include winning Gold at the National Tertiary Match Race Championship, participating at the SB20 Asian Grand Slam at One Degree 15, and the World University Sailing Championships 2018 in France. Through this close working partnership with RSYC, the team has also gained a deep appreciation for and hands-on experience in equipment maintenance. Thus, the sea sports facilities at RSYC have served as an excellent platform for the team to learn and grow, a testament to the high standards maintained at RSYC and the value the RSYC-NUS partnership brings.

Future Aspirations

As a team in its early stages, beyond sustaining its growth as a team, team members hope to expand their contributions to both RSYC and NUS. On top of assisting with organising the RSYC regatta, they hope to extend their sailing activities to the RSYC community, including offering introductory sailing courses on keelboats or dinghies. Similarly, they hope to share sailing with the larger community in NUS, as well as the underprivileged communities. With such high targets set, the team recognises that there will be challenges, especially given the costly nature of sailing. Whilst this partnership has significantly reduced barriers to sailing, the team still faces the challenge of accommodating a growing interest in sailing in the NUS community against a limited number of boats accessible. Nonetheless, maintaining a positive outlook, team members have focused on maximising productivity with the resources at hand, such as conducting multiple training sessions per day to accommodate more members. At the same time, the team is earnestly working towards gaining access to more boats and to maximise the partnership’s potential. Do keep a lookout for team RSYC-NUS on water, as they next aim for the CSC J24 National Championships and National Match Racing Championships happening end May. The team sincerely welcomes RSYC members to write to nussailing@gmail.com for collaborations and feedback, and to follow their activities through Facebook @nussailingteam and Instagram @nussailing.

SAILING AND SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMME About Metazone

Metazone is a non-profit organisation which prides itself for bringing values, life skills and sustainability to our heartland schools. We see ourselves as the bridge between schools and industry, helping young people transit into building successful lives and careers for themselves; and continuing to add value and give back unto society. We believe that right values bring about right decisions, and choosing to consistently do the right things will bring about beneficial and sustainable outcomes.

Their Programme

Already into our sixth year, the Sailing and Sustainability Programme (SSP), under Metazone, provides learning opportunities for youths to find successful pathways. We teach our students a set of values and life skills, and use Sailing as a medium to help them internalise and see these values come ‘alive’ in an experiential way. Undeniably, Sailing is an expensive sport. As such, through communal efforts, Metazone provides the platform where the community can come together to provide these highlysubsidised programmes. The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club and its members are some of our key supporters. We have been very blessed to have them provide us with safe waters and shelter so that our students can run our sailing, leadership, mentoring and facilitation programmes at RSYC.

40

RSYC.ORG.SG

SEASPORTS Join Metazone ! Phase I

Our programmes start during the June holidays every year, with a four-day non-residential camp. Our students from 1215 secondary schools come together to socialise and learn these key values, under the guidance of our Facilitators from the various universities and tertiary educational institutions. During this camp, we promote peer-to-peer mentoring. The land and sea activities during SSP Phase I are designed to help students experience, reflect and internalise these values. This year’s SSP Phase I program will be held on 6-8 June 2019

Phase II

Phase 2 of the programme happens every year between July – September. During this segment of the program, we bring our SSP participants to various local and multi-national companies (MNCs) for them to be exposed to different careers and industries. The learning experience of the participants is further enhanced by C-suite and management level executives whom we invite to speak with these students. They help us further reinforce the same values that were taught during the Phase I of the programme. The C-suite leaders and their managers share with our group of curious Secondary Two students; their individual journeys and how they overcame their own challenges to be where they are today. Values revolving around generosity, team work and looking after their community are always part of their recipes towards success. This greatly empowers the teachers and students when they see that the same values that we teach, are also important and relevant in a professional environment.

Phase III

Phase 3 of the programme is conducted, through the partnering with Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) where our students would sail over to Pulau Ubin for an overnight camp. This camp is for students to rekindle their friendships, and to share and reflect with their peers how these values have helped them.

“Sailing is a sport that requires many character qualities that can be applicable in life. I have seen my students grow from strength to strength in this programme. We are glad to have partnered SSF for this initative and hope to see more school come aboard for this initiative” - Ms Chung Pei Shi, Teacher at Hillgrove Secondary School

“The SSP allows our children to grow and learn with opportunities that may not be available if they just stayed on land. The water provides a unique environment to teach these skills and every time we do this programm, we are amazed at the potential of our children in neighbourhood schools. For every child here, we hope to see him or her attain the best they can and would love to see more children introduced to this concept of sustainability and sailing ” - Mr Jevan Tan, Metazone Founder

Once again, we would like to express our gratitude to RSYC and their members for hosting us. We welcome members and their children to join us!
