GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, The month of May signals the start of the school holiday period, and our Events Team have lined up several great events for the families.

groups and subsidise the costs involved. Please register your interest, and make friends with members of similar interests. This will be a great bonding activity.

NEW RECIPROCAL CLUB STAYCATION AT THE MARINA LODGE We have also planned “staycation” packages for families to stay at our Marina Lodge. These packages include breakfast as well as F&B vouchers that you can use at any of our dining outlets. Stay on a weekend, and you can use the voucher at our sizzling BBQ promotion, which will be on every weekend for the month of June. The Club is also providing a “wet” bouncy castle at the pool during the weekends for the June holidays. This had rave reviews during the last Commodore’s Day. We will also have our new children’s playground ready for the month of June.

INTEREST GROUPS We are also actively looking to start interest groups in the Club. There will be a sign up board at the main lobby during the month of May, where you can put your name down for activities such as dance, yoga, seasports, and even golf.

We recently had the pleasure of establishing reciprocity with Hebe Haven Yacht Club in Hong Kong. For those members who are planning a trip to Hong Kong, do pay them a visit.

NEW JACKPOT MACHINES Regulars at the Jackpot Room can look forward to trying their luck at two new machines by early June. These new machines were selected based on a poll of Jackpot Room regulars. We thank you for your inputs and we hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoy having you here with us.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT On behalf of all the staff, I want to thank all members who came and supported the Commodore’s Day 2014. Photos and a brief report of the Commodore’s Day can be found on page 20.

I also want to express my thanks and appreciation to all members for giving the staff some “time off” for the Staff Dinner & Dance on 23 April 2014. See you around the Club! Trevor De Silva General Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

EXCHANGE OF BURGEES WITH WAIKIKI YACHT CLUB The Club exchanged burgees with Waikiki Yacht Club (WYC) when its former director and current member Ned Murphy came for a visit on 4 April 2014. A reciprocal club of ours, WYC is a private yacht club founded in 1944 and is located in Honolulu in the state of Hawaii, USA.

Mr Ned Murphy (left) and GM Mr Trevor De Silva.

NEW SECURITY MEASURES FROM 1 JUNE 2014 To ensure optimum security for our members and staff, the Club will be implementing – from 1 June 2014 – new security measures as follows: • Non-registered guests will now have to wait at a designated “waiting area” at the guardhouse while waiting for members to sign them in at the Main Lobby. • Guests will be allowed to wait at the Main Lobby only if members have informed the Front Desk of their arrival. • Charter Boat guests will also have to wait at the designated “waiting area” at the guardhouse, pending verification of identity documents based on the manifest submitted and proper sign-in by member at the Main Lobby. We seek members’ cooperation in this matter.

GENTLE REMINDER ON PARKING ALONG ROAD OUTSIDE CLUB Please be informed that parking along the road outside the Club is strictly not permitted by the Land Transport Authority. While signed-in guests are allowed to park their vehicles at the Club’s car park, members will be given top priority. In the event of a fully occupied car park at the Club, we kindly request that your guests park their vehicles at the available parking facilities nearby the Club – West Coast Ferry Terminal (adjacent to the Club) and West Coast Park (5 minutes walk from the Club). We seek your understanding in this matter.

New attractions for kids at the Club As part of the ongoing improvements at RSYC, the Club has refurbished the Children’s Room at The Wharf Restaurant and will see the construction of the new playground, to be completed by early June. The youngsters can now look forward to a fun time while parents dine and relax at the Club. CHILDREN’S ROOM The Children’s Room, now relocated near The Wharf Restaurant, has undergone some “transformation” over several weeks in March and April. The new Children’s Room now features a lively wall mural, painted by volunteering member Shane Chia and friend Dylan Liang, along with new and interactive toys to keep the children entertained. CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND To provide endless hours of fun for the young ones, the new 60m2 playground will feature rubberized flooring, a “donkey ride”, a climbing net that trails across to a main playhouse fitted with a “fireman’s pole” and a slide. Look out for it in June.

A cozy backdrop for youngsters at play Airbrush-wielding 34-year-old member Shane Chia, who joined the Club in March 2014, recently volunteered to paint a playful mural together with his friend Dylan Liang, in the newly-refurbished Children's Room. Shane, a boating enthusiast, is expecting the arrival of his 16-meter boat from Phuket in May and intends to embrace the maritime lifestyle and live onboard with his family. The nautical-inspired mural depicting popular animated characters will provide a colorful and cozy backdrop for youngsters’ play sessions at the Children’s Room.

A carnival atmosphere filled the Club on Saturday 22 March 2014, as members and guests joined in the festivity at this year's Commodore's Day. After the recent successful completion of the extension wing of the Marina Lodge, the "open house" theme had members re-acquainted with the various facilities around the Club. Members and guests were treated to fun games, quizzes and activities including sailing, kayaking, power-boating and even soothing massages. Roaming magicians, a balloon sculptor

and two bouncy castles added fun for the younger ones, while cash registers at the stalls rang steadily as specialty beers, gourmet cupcakes and even soft toys flew off the shelves. An on-stage magic show and Tae Kwon Do demonstration entertained the afternoon crowd; and the event ended on a high note with prizes given out to lucky winners. A big thank you to all members and guests for turning up and giving us your overwhelming support.

leaks. Never discharge bilge water that appears oily or has a sheen into the water.

Every boater loves being on the water and a clean marine environment is a crucial aspect of enjoying the boating experience. With over 238 boats registered at RSYC today, the cumulative actions of boaters and crews can have a significant impact on the well being of the marine ecosystem. You can help to keep our Club and waterways clean and green by following these simple tips: CLEAN SAFELY & GENTLY Look for environment-friendly and non-toxic cleaning products for boats that can help protect the environment and are safer for you and your family. While cleaning your boat, use biodegradable cleaning agents and avoid from getting them into the water. Many companies today are producing marine cleaning products that are committed to maintaining cleaner waters; and have developed non-toxic and biodegradable boat soaps, which have minimal negative impact on the aquatic environment. IF IT’S RECYCLABLE, RECYCLE IT Upkeep of boats generally produces a variety of recyclable wastes such as solvent from paints, antifreeze, oil, gasoline, batteries, mercury from bilge pump switches, and expired flares. Other recyclable wastes such as foam containers, plastic bags, bottles, cans, nets and monofilament fishing lines can harm or kill marine life and birds by trapping or suffocating them. Apart from harming the environment and its natural inhabitants, these waste can also do damage to your boat or fishing equipment, if they are improperly disposed. Dispose these wastes at a waste collection facility where these can be recycled or disposed of safely. Check with the Marine Dept on available services or locations where you can dispose these wastes.

PREVENT FUEL OR CHEMICAL SPILLS Install a device to prevent overboard discharges from your tank, which will give a warning and prevent spills when your tank is reaching its fuel capacity. Fill your tank cautiously and slowly; leaving 10% empty to prevent it from overflowing and allowing the fuel to naturally expand as it warms. Fuel naturally expands as the temperature rises and leaving a bit of space at the top of your fuel tank will help to prevent fuel from overflowing when it's warmer outside. Small drips and spills of gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products add up and can be detrimental to the marine environment. If a spill occurs, please notify the Marina Dept immediately. MAINTAIN PROPER EQUIPMENT Make sure your boat’s engine and propeller blades are in good condition to avoid wasting fuel and minimizing the chances of any oil, gasoline or other hazardous materials entering the water. CHART YOUR COURSE Study your navigation charts and waterways to prevent boat propellers from damaging sensitive sea floor habitats or injuring marine life. Avoid consuming excess fuel supply and plan your trip in advance to avoid confusion and misdirection. Also, be careful when you drop your anchor, a powerful windlass can do a lot of damage to a coral reef. AND FINALLY… Please be mindful of the surroundings at the Club for the benefit and enjoyment of other members and boaters. Be it on the water or on land, let’s all take the responsibility to keep the waterways and boat-washing areas at the Club clean and rubbish-free. If you have any suggestions or recommendations that will help us save and preserve the environment, please do not hesitate to drop us a note at info@rsyc.org.sg Happy boating!

STASH YOUR TRASH Never throw cigarette butts, fishing line, or any other garbage into the sea. Keep your trash onboard in a sturdy container and dispose them when you’re back on land. Use the recycling stations available at the Club to recycle plastic, glass, metal and paper. MAINTAIN A CLEAN BILGE Unmaintained bilges pose a potential threat to the environment since they are prone to collect engine oil, fuel, antifreeze, and transmission fluid. While a bilge pump can be used to pump these fluids overboard, another alternative is by using absorbent bilge pads or pillows to absorb oily wastes, but not water. These pads and pillows can then be disposed of properly when it’s saturated. To minimize oils in the bilge, keep the engine well tuned with no leaking seals, gaskets, or hoses. When changing oil filters, slip a plastic bag over the filter before removal to catch drips and secure fuel hoses to prevent chafing and
