VICE COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Dear fellow members, It is with a heavy heart at the time of writing this message, to know that we have recently lost our beloved Patron Mr S R Nathan. Mr Nathan, who had been our Patron and ardent supporter of the Club since April 2003, died peacefully on 22 August 2016. He will be sadly missed by all members and staff of RSYC; and will remain forever in our hearts. On behalf of the committee, members, management and staff, I extend the deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Mrs Nathan and his family. Read more about his involvement at the Club in the following pages. RSYC REGATTA 2016 We successfully concluded the Club's signature regatta in July and planning for next year's edition will soon be underway. Participating skippers shared their experiences at the regatta; while a young member Ashley Yong also gave her vivid account of volunteering at the Sailability races. You can read more on pages 6 to 9 and page 25; and see more photos of the regatta on our Facebook page. SPECIAL VISIT BY KING OF TONGA, HIS MAJESTY KING TUPOU VI On Friday 9 September, we will have the honour of hosting HM King Tupou VI and his delegates for a tour of the Club and a cruise around the surrounding waters. While the objective of the visit is to give an overview of RSYC and development of marinas in Singapore, we shall without doubt, showcase our warmest hospitality for our esteemed guests. FOOD & BEVERAGE HIGHLIGHTS In the upcoming months, you can look forward to a range of events and promotions, specially planned out for members to enjoy. Coming up around the corner will be the Mid-Autumn Steamboat Set Dinner &

Lantern Walk on Thursday 15 September. Do make your reservations early to avoid disappointment. Meat-lovers can look forward to a T-Bone Steak promotion in September; and Crispy Pork Knuckle and Sausage Platter special in October. Do check the following pages or call us for more details. EVENTS AROUND THE CORNER By popular demand, the Tombola Night will now be held every first Friday of the month; and members can also look forward to an "Oktoberfest" themed Members' Night on Friday 30 September and a "Spooky Halloween" themed gathering on Friday 28 October. Do pencil in these dates in your calendar. Looking ahead for the month of November, we will be having the RSYC Charity Cruise and Commodore's Day. Please do give us your support to make these events a smashing success! Planning for the New Year's Eve party is also well underway and all I can say is that it promises to be an amazing event! Look out for full details in the next issue of the magazine. ROOFTOP TENNIS COURT Tennis enthusiasts can now have their games at the Club's rooftop tennis court. The court is open from 9am to 10pm daily and members can make their bookings by calling in at 6768 9288 or online at bit.ly/tenniscourtbooking WELCOME ONBOARD I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new General Manager Mr Kellvin Ong into the RSYC family.

RSYC NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT As a members-owned club, its survival depends significantly on the support it receives from the members themselves. And reiterating from past messages from the flag officers of the Club, I greatly encourage all members to give RSYC the unrelenting support it deserves – by patronizing its F&B outlets, making use of its facilities, accommodation, and joining in the events planned and organized by the management. In closing, I extend my personal invitation to all members, to partake in the promotions, events and activities in the coming months; and I sincerely hope that you will make time to come to your Club. See you around the Club! BALAKRISHNAN B Vice Commodore Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

Going forward, Mr Ong – who has over three decades worth of experience under his belt, in a range of capacities within the hospitality industry – will be working very closely with the staff, management and committee in overseeing the various aspects of managing the Club's operational activities and charting COMMODORE Wee Keng Hwee

TRIBUTE TO S R NATHAN

S R NATHAN 1924 – 2016

We are deeply saddened with the recent passing of our beloved Patron and Former President of Singapore Mr S R Nathan on 22 August 2016. We mourn the loss of a great man – our Patron, Friend and Mentor. With deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences from the Committee, Members, Management & Staff of Republic of Singapore Yacht Club.

TRIBUTE TO S R NATHAN

Once refered to as an ”indispensable man for all seasons” by the late founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, Mr S R Nathan, whose civil service career spanned over four decades, was Singapore’s longestserving President. He graciously accepted the invitation to become Patron of the Club on 23 April 2003, and since then, RSYC have had the tremendous privilege of his support at many of the Club’s notable events such as the Club’s Charity Golf Dinner in 2009 which raised S$150,000 for the Parkinson’s Disease Society of Singapore, the official launch of the Club’s heritage book ”Three Burgees” in 2010; and the official opening of RSYC’s Dry Stack Building in 2012. As a ardent supporter of RSYC, Mr Nathan regularly visited the Club for lunch at our restaurants and was always welcoming towards Club members during those visits. He will be sadly missed by all members and staff of RSYC; and will remain forever in our hearts. Our deepest sympathies go out to Mrs Nathan and his family. May his soul rest in peace.

A sincere handwritten note to Commodore Wee Keng Hwee complimenting the RSYC Magazine.

SPECIAL FEATURE

KEEPING SEAS PRISTINE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS 27 & 29 JULY 2016

On 27 and 29 July, members David and Jo Haines hosted students from Deyi Secondary School and Ang Mo Kio Secondary School respectively on board the D/Y Lady Jo as part of an Educational Outreach Programme Initiated by the International SeaKeepers Society.

After a brief but informative lesson on Singapore’s marine biodiversity and the effects of our changing coastline, participants were provided plankton nets to collect samples from the water around the Marina. They collected many interesting organisms, which were then brought back on board, to be identified and further examined under a microscope.

As a US-based non-profit organisation, The International SeaKeepers Society actively promotes education, oceanographic research, and conservation through direct involvement with the yachting community.

At the end of the first “floating classroom” session, the students enjoyed a crash course on navigation by David Haines, which left them interested and curious to find out more about marine protection and navigation.

Following a safety briefing by Marina Manager Mr Tasrin, the students climbed on board the D/Y Lady Jo where scientists Dr Toh Tai Chong and Dr Ng Ngan Kee and their team from the National University of Singapore facilitated a learning encounter for the students which they would not have been able to experience in their own classrooms.

Goodie bags were distributed and the students were grateful for the snacks and refreshments they had received on both afternoons. A big thank you to all members and guests who took time off that Friday evening to join us for the dinner.

MORE ABOUT SEAKEEPERS SOCIETY The International SeaKeepers Society is a USA-based non-profit organization focusing on the health of the world’s oceans and climate. Founded in 1998 by a small group of yacht owners who were alarmed by the deterioration of our natural environment, the organisation‘s initial focus was the development and use of instrumentation on yachts to monitor marine conditions throughout the world’s oceans. Today, the primary focus of SeaKeepers’ efforts is the DISCOVERY YACHT (D/Y) Programme. DISCOVERY YACHT (D/Y) are privately owned vessels which facilitate programming by providing access to the ocean for research, scientific discovery, community outreach

and artistic inspiration. From hosting learning excursions for youth groups to facilitating scientific research, these yachts are the platform to enable SeaKeepers’ accomplishments. The International SeaKeepers Society Programming team works to bring together interested yacht owners, educators, scientists and various parties in order to achieve the objectives. The motto of SeaKeepers – Research, Educate, Protect and Restore In April 2016, the International SeaKeepers Society established the International SeaKeepers Society, Asia in Singapore. This expansion with a new chapter in Asia will be under the

10

leadership of Julian Chang. As a Board member, Julian Chang being an active member of the yachting and shipping industry in Singapore and China has been tasked with expanding the success of SeaKeepers’ programmes to our region. The DISCOVERY Yacht Fleet membership is only available for those who have devoted their yacht to science through a SeaKeepers expedition, drifter deployment or outreach programme. If you are interested to be a Discovery Yacht member, please contact julian@seakeepers.org or gail.tay@seakeepers.org. For more information on SeaKeepers please visit: www.seakeepers.org and the SeaKeepers Asia Webpage.

SEA SPORTS Making new friends.

t the Learning abou oat. Hansa 2.3 sailb

I am 10. Our average age is 41. Guess how old is Uncle Anthony?

During the recent RSYC Regatta, a young member jumped on the opportunity to volunteer at the Sailability event at the regatta. Being a sailor herself, 10-year-old Ashley Yong, recounts her experience as she helps out the sailors throughout the event.

A HUMBLING EXPERIENCE Hi everyone, I am Ashley. Have any one of you heard of the term ‘Sailability’? Well, it was a first for me when I went to volunteer for a Sailability event at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club’s Regatta 2016. The word ‘Sailability’ means disabled sailing. Interesting isn’t it? When I heard this word, I never would have guessed that it meant “disabled sailing”! Fascinated by this fact, I looked forward to volunteering in this Sailability event. Being a kid, nervousness would kick in when talking to someone you have never met, worrying about if you said the wrong thing to him or her. Walking towards the meeting venue for rigging, a huge lump formed in my throat. “How do these boats operate? Will I be able to help them with the rigging of a boat I have never seen?” – I thought to myself as I walked towards an elderly man on a wheelchair. This elderly man was Uncle Anthony; and when I went to ask if he needed any help, he immediately let me learn more about the type of boat Sailability sailors use – Hansa 2.3. The Hansa is a very cute boat – in my opinion – and the object that controls the rudder is fixed directly at the side of the daggerboard

holder, ensuring the sailors not needing to sit on the rim of the boat. The rudder is just a rectangular board and there is a metal holder for the rudder at the back of the boat. When launching, sailors simply slip the board in. The heaviest object apart from the boat is the daggerboard – and like they say – never judge a book by its cover. The daggerboard is in fact, is a lot heavier than it seems. Wanting to help a female sailor, I went to get her rudder and daggerboard, thinking like an optimist sailor, I went to carry both the daggerboard and rudder at the same time. Upon lifting the daggerboard, I was surprised by the weight of the daggerboard and nearly dropped it! Lucky for me, a male volunteer helped me with the daggerboard. Having no idea that he was mute, I thanked him, but he didn’t respond to me. Not understanding until another volunteer, Amy, explained to me that he was both deaf and mute. I was happy that someone who is also disabled was helping other disabled people as a volunteer too. When they were launching, I ran towards a sailor, who was in need of someone’s attention, and helped him launch. Seeing the Sailability sailors heading out to win some races was really memorable, as it was seeing them with perseverance and happiness written all over their faces, as they went off to a fun day of racing. At the end of the day whether you win a prize or not, you had a good time, good experience, and had a good time racing. Thanks for reading! Ashley Yong 10-year-old Aspiring Sailor

Oahu, Hawaii in December 2016 – this group of students envisioned building autonomous systems of the future – building and designing a vehicle that is capable of navigating underwater and performing a series of tasks without any remote control assistance. RSYC SUPPORTS NUS’ BUMBLEBEE A.U.V PROJECT In the coming months’, RSYC will play host to a group of inventive students from the National University of Singapore for a very interesting project – an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle – or in other words, an underwater robot that can navigate its way around obstacles without any human assistance.

BACKGROUND Around mid-2012, a team of students was formed Bumblebee AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) to participate in the inaugural Singapore Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Challenge (SAUVC) in March 2013. Gunning for world-class standards from the start, the team attracted the attention of various organisations, who have supported the team since their first Singapore competition. The vehicle has rapidly evolved and now regularly participate in a world-level competition held annually in San Diego, USA.
