Annual Report 2016-2017

Page 1

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

Over the past 28 years I have been amazed to watch this school grow from the bold idea of a few passionate believers into the thriving and sustained reality that is Nativity Prep. From my former vantage point just a few miles away at Boston College High School, I have witnessed your unwavering commitment to a mission of self-less service, inviting underserved families in Boston to the opportunity of a high-quality, tuition-free Jesuit education. Through these years I have known, and been personally inspired by, many of the teachers, volunteers, benefactors, alumni and families whose love and hard work has nurtured Nativity along the way. I am deeply grateful for this “Community for Others” that continues to grow and expand, ensuring that the success of Nativity continues into the future.

Since my arrival last summer, I have been profoundly moved by your warm welcome into the Nativity family. As a part of this family, each day I am privileged to see young boys full of joy and potential, families filled with hope, professional educators working tirelessly to form young minds and spirits and volunteers who tutor, cook and everything in-between. Beyond the physical building, I have come to know the diverse Nativity family that includes graduates who stop by on a regular basis, partners in our neighborhood and city,

and supporters like you who provide the resources necessary to make all of this work. We are taught by St. Ignatius to “see God in all things”, and in fact the very name of our school, “Nativity”, reminds us that God is present here in the world. It is easy to see in the abundant generosity of this “Community for Others” that God is indeed present, active and encouraging us in our mission.

In the pages of this “Gratitude Report” are a glimpse of the many ways that you manifest goodness, sacrifice and love in our Nativity “Community for Others”.

In gratitude,

Students hanging with Brian Maher, Nativity Preparatory School President

Thank you for living out St. Ignatius’ Prayer for Generosity that guides our community each day.

Lord, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to ight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for reward, save that of knowing that I do your will.

Amen.

St. Ignatius Loyola

At the heart of the call of Jesuit education, and perhaps what most sets it apart, is the mission of forming “men and women for others.” At Nativity Preparatory School, this spirit and transformation is not confined to our students and alumni alone. The Nativity spirit of service, excellence and love is shaped by – and shapes - all who take part in the life of the school.

JOSEPH NGNOMBOUOWO

8th Grade Class of Brebeuf

Joseph has grown as a scholar and a mentor during his time at Nativity. Joseph can often be found chatting with the 4th graders and encouraging them, brotherto-brother, about how to take advantage of the Nativity opportunity.

As I prepare to graduate, I now realize how many more opportunities I have than if I had gone to public school. Going here for free is an amazing blessing thanks to my sponsors. It’s opened doors for me and has given me 74 classmates that I now consider brothers.”

THE NATIVITY PREP DIFFERENCE

Grads at Grad, “Men for Others” for Life

9 Academic

Rigorous coursework in math, science, reading and language arts, and writing are taught by an expert team of Lead Teachers and Teaching Fellows who help prepare our students to persist and excel at the area’s top independent high schools.

9 Athletic

Involvement in athletics and team sports encourages our students to be active and helps them to develop leadership skills and teamwork no matter their role on the team.

9 Co-Curricular

Afternoon co-curricular activities broaden our students’ horizon, lay the groundwork for lifetime passions, expose them to opportunities they may have never had otherwise, and provide forums for social justice discussions that develop strong, thoughtful voices.

9 Service

Each student is expected not just to participate in community service events each year, but to learn about the social issues and injustices facing those they serve and to reflect on their experiences of accompanying those in need.

9 Faith-Formation

Thought-provoking religion and writing classes, class retreats, faith sharing activities and communal liturgies give Nativity Prep boys the framework to seek meaning, purpose and the good of others throughout their lives.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE

ED DAILEY

Lawyer, Religion Teacher, Varsity Soccer Coach, Liturgy Coordinator

When Ed was asked by then president, Father John C. Wronski, SJ to volunteer time to teach one religion class, he thought it was worth trying to help. Nine years later, while still practicing law at Sunstein LLP and now teaching our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade religion programs, Ed’s found that the more he gives to Nativity, the more he gets in return.

“There are a lot of schools that serve inner city kids, but Nativity has something much more comprehensive. Yes, we provide skills for later success, but here, from our Jesuit perspective, we also want our students to graduate with the tools to ind purpose and meaning in their lives.”

IVAN MEJIA

Nativity Class of Kostka (’12), Roxbury Latin (’16), Boston College (’20), Nativity volunteer tutor

When it was time to think about college, Ivan dreamed of following in the footsteps of a few Nativity alumni who he looked up to and went on to attend Boston College. Recognizing how challenging the admissions process is, he turned to Nativity’s Graduate Support Office for guidance, support and encouragement. When Ivan proudly enrolled at Boston College, one of the first things he did was to sign up for BC’s PULSE Program for Service Learning to return to his alma mater as a volunteer tutor.

“When I returned to Nativity to tutor students, the boys asked me a lot about my experience in school. Thinking back to the support I got, I tell them, “Remember, Nativity will always be there for you.” It’s crazy for me to think that thanks to Nativity, my kids will be able to say ‘my dad went to college’.”

A LIFETIME OF SUPPORT

A Game-changing Model

Staffed by two full-time professionals, our Graduate Support Office offers targeted resources and programming to ensure that the academic growth, character formation and call to service of our graduating students are supported and encouraged through high school, college and beyond. We don’t sent our graduates out into the world alone, we continue to walk with them throughout their entire educational journey.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE

TIM CAREY

Graduate Support Office and Volunteer School Photographer

“Tim is a “community guy”. It’s what led him to commit 38 years to the prestigious Noble & Greenough School in a range of different roles. Now an active and valued member of the Nativity community, Tim is one of our biggest advocates. He reflects, “How could I not want to be part of it?” His “retirement” now includes working with our 8th graders on their high school applications and interviews at some of the area’s top independent schools.

It’s really satisfying to me to see the boys respond to the application question, ‘What do you like about your school?’, with such efusive praise of their school community. They all mention the supportive faculty and nurturing environment, as well as the ‘brothers’ they gain for life and their shared sense of mission to become ‘men for others’.”

Chair of the Board (Paul), Dinner Program Volunteer, Student Sponsors... Nativity’s biggest cheerleaders

Paul and Pat Daoust have been involved with Nativity since 1998. In the last 20 years, they’ve done everything from serving numerous dinners at Evening Study, to sponsoring many students, to serving on our Board of Trustees with a commitment of time and resources that humbles us greatly. Deeply connected to the school’s Jesuit mission, they’ve helped the school continually seek the magis in all we do.

It’s a robust education, forming men for others and educating the whole person. Nativity is not just about the ‘what’ you’re learning, but also about the ‘who’ you are.”

Philanthropic Supporters

Thank you to all of the following individuals, foundations and corporations for their generous support of our students and alumni from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. We remain deeply grateful to our valued benefactors who support allows the school to meet its annual operating needs and provide a high-quality, tuition-free education to its students each year.

While he sees Nativity’s Jesuit identity as thriving, Br. Joe also sees the Capuchin charism alive and well in how the school empowers the marginalized and operates with a spirit of “everyone pitching in”.

“ BR. JOE ANDERSON, OFMCAP

I’m amazed by how students, faculty, volunteers and donors all show a communal care for one another driven by personal relationships. Seeing these boys want to share their prayers and express themselves at Morning Assembly is a small, but powerful, way of giving a voice to the voiceless.”

Our time with the students doesn’t end ater 8th grade graduation. There’s no ‘bye, see you later’ around here. There are an incredible number of students who come back for guidance, to visit teachers and mentors, to volunteer, and it shows the Nativity diference. Something clicked with them for life.”

STUDENT SPONSOR PROFILE

PETER AND MEREDITH MURPHY

Student Sponsors

After seeing the positive effects of a private education for their three sons – the rigorous academics, strong teacher-student relationships and the “brotherhood” culture - the Murphys found sponsoring a student at Nativity a perfect way to share that gift with boys who otherwise might never get that opportunity.

Our friends got us interested in Nativity’s model, but it was visiting and seeing the amount of time and efort the boys put into their education and what’s expected of them that inspired us to get involved.

PATRICK NOLAN, SJ

Jesuit studying at Boston College, Campus Ministry Volunteer, Assistant Lacrosse Coach

While his vocation as a young Jesuit has sent him as far as Micronesia, newly ordained deacon, Pat Nolan, SJ always knew that he wanted to serve at a Nativity school. Pat says Nativity is a constant source of inspiration for him, achieved not only by working with students during campus ministry retreats and reflections, but also interacting with the faculty, and the time he spends with both by coaching lacrosse.

I love seeing the students make connections on a retreat between an aspect of a saint’s life and something going on in their own lives. It’s powerful.”

Every gift given in support of Nativity Prep is greatly appreciated and every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this listing. If you notice any mistakes, please accept our apologies and report the errors or omissions to Joanne Coluccio, Director of Advancement, at 857-728-0031 or jcoluccio@ nativityboston.org.

THANK YOU, FR. WRONSKI! The entire Nativity Prep family thanks Rev. John C. Wronski, S.J. for ten years of dedication, labor and love for this “Community for Others” and Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.

AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM

THE MISSION

Nativity Preparatory School of Boston is an accredited, tuition-free, Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston. Staffed by experience teachers and dedicated volunteers who work closely with families, the school prepares students for success in high school and college. Nativity’s academically challenging and highly structured environment helps students grow in a love for learning and an abiding sense of responsibility to their community. In the Ignatian tradition, the school promotes the intellectual, spiritual, social and physical growth that inspires boys from Boston to become men for others.

GET INVOLVED

The Top 10 Ways Our Supporters Are a “Community for Others”

There are many meaningful ways to help our boys succeed. We invite you to consider becoming more involved with the Nativity Prep community in a new way this year. To learn more, please contact Joanne Coluccio, Director of Advancement, at 857-728-0031 ext. 14 or jcoluccio@ nativityboston.org.

1. Be a Tutor

Volunteer tutors work alongside Nativity faculty to supervise the students and serve as one-on-one tutors with the boys as they complete their daily homework assignments. No prior experience is necessary, but your skills, insight and expertise will be put to good use by helping our students learn and grow academically.

2. Dinner Cooks for Evening Study

Before our Evening Study tutoring sessions, volunteer Dinner Cooks provide students a well-balanced, nutritious meal and enable students and tutors to interact, socialize and get to know each other. Dinner cooks are invited to sign up for any number of available evenings during the school year and no long-term commitment is required.

3. Be a Big Brother

In partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, Nativity Prep is proud to participate in their School/Site Based Mentoring Program. Volunteers are matched one-to-one with our current students and meet together regularly at the school –typically once a week during lunch or every other Friday during lunch.

4. Mentor a Graduate

As part of our long-term commitment to our students, we provide support even after they’ve graduated from Nativity Prep. Our Graduate Support Office has many opportunities for volunteers to engage with, mentor and support our alumni. Some programs are ongoing, while other unique opportunities arise during the year, like providing internship opportunities at your place of employment, hosting a graduate interested in learning more about your career field, and participating in our Career Days.

5. Sponsor a Student or Class

As a member of Nativity’s Student Sponsorship Program, supporters have the opportunity to witness firsthand the meaningful impact that Nativity Prep has on a student’s life. All students attend Nativity Prep on a full scholarship as a result of the partnership and generosity of Nativity’s benefactors. As a Student Sponsor, you will observe the transformation that a student makes from the time he enters Nativity Prep, until he graduates.

6. Become/Recommend a Community Partner

We look to outside groups and organizations in the community to help us increase our impact through strategic collaborations. Our community partners include businesses, faith-based institutions, colleges, community groups, civic organizations, and other networks that want to make a collective difference. Involvement takes many forms and can be customized to meet the needs of your organization.

SPONSORING STUDENT SUCCESS

A Personal, Direct and Life-Changing Gift

Nativity Prep Student Sponsors don’t just contribute to the mission and daily work of the school, but gain a personal connection and window into the transformative power of a Nativity education. Paired with Nativity boys, Student Sponsors walk with and support their students throughout their educational journey, often witnessing their success, hard work and joy firsthand at events like the Student Sponsorship Lunch, Spirit Dinner and graduation. It’s the feeling of always having someone cheering them on and personally believing in them that many Nativity boys and alumni cite as the reason they appreciate their Student Sponsors so deeply.

NUGENT

“While the Nugents are proud to support several Boston non-profits and contribute as alumni to their alma maters, they’ve found that Nativity’s Student Sponsorship program offers a real personal connection, where they can see the direct impact of their support.

The best argument we can make for supporting Nativity is to visit, to see the work and impact and spend time with the students. The boys are highly respectful and bright. You can really tell that these are formative years for them and can see the results.”

Perhaps nowhere is the “community for others” spirit more visible than at the Nativity Spirit Dinner held each spring. Made possible by a committed planning committee, a host of volunteers and the generosity of hundreds of supporters, the Nativity Spirit Dinner is an annual celebration of the mission, successes and daily joy of Nativity Prep. It gathers together old and new friends – students, faculty, alumni, families, volunteers, donors, community partners and beyond – to honor those who have exemplified the Nativity spirit by bestowing the Rev. Raymond Callahan, SJ Service Award to deserving community members and to joyfully looking ahead at all we will do for future generations.

THE MISSION

Nativity Preparatory School is an accredited, tuition-free, Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston. Staffed by experienced teachers and dedicated volunteers who work closely with families, the school prepares students for success in high school and college. Nativity’s academically challenging and highly structured environment helps students grow in a love for learning and an abiding sense of responsibility to their community. In the Jesuit tradition, the school promotes the intellectual, spiritual, social and physical growth that inspires boys from Boston to become men for others.

Today our prime educational objective must be to form men-and-women-for-others; men and women who will live not for themselves but for God and his Christ… men and women who cannot even conceive of love of God which does not include love for the least of their neighbors; men and women completely convinced that love of God which does not issue in justice for others is a farce.

Your generosity and support continue to drive our results. The only tuition-free school for boys in the city of Boston, Nativity Prep offers a rigorous, Jesuit education to middle school students from low-income families aspiring to send their sons to college. Thank you for making their dreams a reality and the work of our school an enduring mission.
