ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2023-2024

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2023-2024
Dear Friends,
A few years ago, the worldwide order of Jesuits developed a set of four guiding principles or Universal Apostolic Preferences that are directing and influencing Jesuit ministries across the globe in this current decade. As a Jesuit work, Nativity Prep is especially guided by the Apostolic Preference to “Journey with Youth in the Creation of a Hope-Filled Future.” There are two very real calls to action in that preference statement; as adults, we are asked to accompany young people on their journey and to also foster the conditions which can nurture hope as they create their own futures.
While this sounds simple, there are circumstances in today’s world that too often lead us toward cynicism and perhaps worse, toward indifference. For young people, our hyper-connected world seems to amplify obstacles to hope, while muting hope’s possibilities. With this in mind, I think of St. Paul’s letter to the early Christian community in Rome who faced hardship and persecution for their beliefs.
We celebrate in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also celebrate in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit. -Romans 5:1-5
Hope does not disappoint, in fact hope is the very reason for the existence and success of this school. Families choose Nativity Prep with hope-filled hearts, seeking possibility and opportunity for their sons. The boys themselves may see the long school days, summer programs, and abundant homework as tribulations, but they learn to persevere, grow in character, and become filled with the hope of attending some our incredible partner high schools.
Nativity Prep may be a middle school, but our journey with these young men can last for 12 years or more as we support them through high school, college, and beyond. This long-term accompaniment depends on the entire community of students, parents, teachers, staff, trustees and benefactors - all of whom work tirelessly, and give generously to sustain the hope that transforms lives and improves our society.
As an independent, privately funded school, we rely on individuals who care deeply about the future and see hope in this transformative education. I am filled with gratitude for the support that each of you has shared with this school. Thank you for the gift of education because in these times, Nativity Prep is not just an antidote to the trap of cynicism and indifference, it is a source of deep hope, and hope does not disappoint.
With gratitude,
Brian P. Maher, President

I see Nativity Prep as serving a critical need, not just today but for the foreseeable future. In helping to instill the love and the challenge that the boys need to be able to succeed in a world that is not always set up for them to succeed. Nativity gives its students the tools and the foundation to be able to overcome any obstacles.
While working as an admission officer and dorm parent at Milton Academy, I had a chance to meet the Director of Graduate Support, Gadisa Goso (current Nativity Principal), who was there to learn more about the experience of my advisee, Xavier Etheridge (current Director of Graduate Support). I immediately thought, “What is this middle school that is still supporting the success of their students?”
When an opportunity arose to replace Gadisa as the Director of Graduate Support, I jumped at the chance to contribute to Nativity Prep’s success. Little did I know that it would start a lifelong connection.
Today, I’m honored to return to Nativity as the Chair of the Board of Trustees. Nativity is a special place providing a safe space for boys to develop into confident young men. Throughout my 10 years of involvement in various capacities, I’m still amazed to see the program’s outcomes and grateful to be a small part of it. From the impressive high school and college placements to the graduates who return to give back to the school community, Nativity offers an experience that lasts a lifetime.
Nativity has over 30 years of success. As the Chair of the Board, I’m focused on helping to sustain and grow Nativity’s impact into the future. Long-term sustainability and impact depend on the generous support from donors like you and me. Nativity is still early in its journey. I hope to be a part of this community for as long as possible and look forward to seeing a Nativity education positively impact many more young men.
From the moment students enroll at Nativity Prep in the 5th grade, they embark on a journey that immediately grants them uncompromised access, endless opportunities, and comprehensive support from our Graduate Support Office. Nativity makes a lifelong commitment to ensuring our students thrive throughout their middle school, high school, college, and careers.
The Graduate Support team provides all our alumni mentoring, social-emotional, financial, and career support. Providing resources and programs, Nativity walks alongside our students and graduates as they embark on new journeys. As a result, each student feels supported and empowered to change their narrative.
We are proud that 100% of our graduate’s complete high school. Many of our students enroll in and complete postsecondary education at two-year or four-year institutions or pursue alternative vocational training.
Accompanied by the Graduate Support team, Nativity graduates attend some of the top high schools in Massachusetts and top universities across the country:

Cathy
O’Neil
For over twenty-five years, the O’Neil family has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Nativity Prep and its mission, grounded in the values of Jesuit education. Their dedication has been evident through years of service, consistently supporting and uplifting the Nativity Prep community in countless impactful ways.
Cathy O’Neil has served on the Board of Trustees for sixteen years, bringing dedication and leadership to her role. She has chaired major events such as the Spirit Dinner and the Promise Dinner, contributed to/served on the Advancement Committee, and devoted many hours to classroom volunteering, helping younger students improve their reading skills.
Following their dedication to service, their children, Kelly and Peter, shared this commitment, having served as Teaching Fellows at Nativity Prep.
Cathy and her husband, Sean, are longstanding participants in Nativity’s dinner program, have been generous and engaging Student Sponsors, and have hosted memorable outings for the boys in Nativity’s summer program.
This past summer, Cathy, Sean, their children, and grandchildren hosted a special event at their home on Cape Cod. The gathering celebrated Nativity Prep’s continued success, served as an opportunity to reconnect with long-time supporters, and welcomed new friends to the community.
The Nativity community is deeply grateful for the O’Neil family’s lasting impact on the school and their unwavering support in shaping its legacy.
Thank you for your support during the 2023-2024 school year. Your dedication to Nativity Preparatory School has greatly enriched and strengthened the student experience in unimaginable ways. By embracing a culture of philanthropy, you have truly made an impact.

TO THE ANNUAL FUND
Donating to our Annual Fund helps to strengthen the school’s academic, extracurricular, and graduate support programs.
We invite you to join us for our annual Promise Dinner or the Nativity Golf Classic, or come by for a visit. Whichever way you decide to connect with us, we cannot wait for you to experience all the amazing things that make Nativity Prep truly special.
We remain tuition-free due to the generosity of our donors. Being part of the Student Scholarship program by sponsoring a class or individual student allows you to personalize your contribution and directly impact students’ education.
The dinner program is a staple of our extended-day programming. Volunteers provide and serve a well-balanced meal and spend time with the boys and our faculty.
Providing tangible goods and services to the Nativity Community creates wonderful new opportunities for our students and supports operating expenses.
Nativity Prep gratefully accepts grants from Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs), which support our mission. A DAF offers a straightforward, flexible, and tax-advantaged method for charitable donations. DAFs allow donors to make contributions, receive an immediate tax deduction, and recommend grants from the fund over time. Simply contact your fund manager to transfer funds to Nativity Prep.
Opportunities for planned giving include bequests, retirement assets or life insurance gifts, charitable gift annuities, remainder trusts, and leader trusts.
Make a special gift to honor a person(s) who embodies the Nativity mission. You can also remember a loved one with a single memorial gift or by creating a fund in their name. The honoree or the loved one’s family will be notified of your kindness.
Does your company offer gift matching? Ask your HR department—your gift might be doubled or even tripled depending on the program.
Our Dinner Program is an essential part of our extended day program. It is made possible entirely by generous benefactors. Whether the meal is provided by a local restaurant or home cooked, the students thank you for making this life-changing program possible.

The 1990 Legacy Society honors the founding year of Nativity Preparatory School and gathers dedicated supporters committed to securing the future of Nativity students through planned giving. By including Nativity Prep in your estate plans, you can become part of this meaningful society, leaving a lasting mark on the future Nativity boys’ lives while gaining tax and financial benefits for your family.
We invite you to explore how joining the 1990 Legacy Society can assist in achieving your philanthropic objectives, fulfill your family’s needs, and shape your vision for Nativity Prep’s future. Our team is prepared to work with you, your family, and your advisors to create a plan tailored to your goals.
To start a conversation about how to build your legacy at Nativity Prep, please contact me or the Advancement Office. Together, we can ensure that your commitment to Nativity Prep endures for generations.
Your future gift, no matter the size, helps ensure that we will be able to serve not only our current students and alumni but also the young men who will follow in their footsteps.
A bequest – or leaving a specific percentage or amount of an estate in a will – is one of the most popular options for making a planned gift to Nativity Preparatory School. Support of this kind can be made in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or other personal property.
Life insurance policies that are no longer needed can be gifted to our students by adding Nativity Preparatory School as a beneficiary to the policy. This type of gift can be tax-deductible if Nativity Prep is made the owner of the policy.
Naming Nativity Prep as a beneficiary of a 401(k) or 403(b) retirement plan or IRA is a wonderful way to support the students and alumni of Nativity Prep. Gifts made from a retirement plan are not subject to estate, federal, or state income taxes, allowing the full value of the gift to be recognized.
A Charitable Lead Trust would provide Nativity Preparatory School with an annual income (percentage or fixed amount) determined by the donor for a term of years. At the end of the term, the remainder of the trust is paid to the beneficiary of the donor’s choice, including all unrealized appreciation and free of transfer taxes.
A Charitable Remainder Trust provides a donor with an annual income (percentage or fixed amount) during their lifetime. At the death of the last income beneficiary, the corpus of the trust would be transferred to Nativity Preparatory School in support of our students and alumni.
Charitable gift annuities, which can be made with gifts of cash or appreciated securities, guarantee the donor a fixed annual income and provide numerous tax benefits.
Jack Coleman, a U.S. Navy Veteran and a Boston College graduate, first connected with Nativity Prep in the early 1990s. He was deeply impressed by the school's mission and became a devoted supporter, contributing modestly on an annual basis until his passing on February 21, 2023. As a longtime resident of Belmont, MA, he was well known for his love of drawing, which included many published sports cartoons, personality portraits, and illustrations. In 2008, during his retirement, he devoted several months to volunteering as an art teacher at Nativity Prep. Nativity is incredibly honored to be a part of Jack Coleman’s legacy. His generous gift will have a profound impact, ensuring that our students have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. Jack’s belief in education as a force for good is a legacy that will continue to shape lives.
His estate gift will be allocated to Nativity’s Endowment and College Promise Scholarship Fund, ensuring the continuation of the school’s commitment to academic excellence, enriching extracurricular opportunities, and life-long support through Graduate Support. His legacy will empower students to carry forward his spirit of creativity and compassion as they shape their futures. Today, Jack’s gift of $599,382 is the largest individual legacy donation in Nativity’s history.

We have embraced a culture that encourages students to prepare for each day with a mindset of readiness. When students start their day at Nativity Preparatory School, they confidently declare “READY,” a reflection of their commitment to our core values, which are embodied in the acronym READY:
We treat ourselves and others with kindness and respect.
We appreciate and celebrate differences in the community and ensure everyone feels included and valued.
We consider the impact of our words and actions on others and always try to be positive contributors to our community.
We assume the best in others.
E A D Y
We strive for high-quality work that we take pride in.
We are fully present, engaged, and prepared for our academics, athletics, and activities.
We show our work, use precise language, and keep belongings organized.
We are reliable and dependable, following through on our commitments.
We stand up for what is just and fair, even when it’s challenging, and even when no one is observing.
We demonstrate honesty and moral courage in all our actions.
We recognize that while everyone makes mistakes, we are accountable for our choices and take responsibility for our actions.
We act in ways that show our commitment to the Jesuit mission of faith and service, making the school and world a better place.
We persist through difficult tasks and continue to try our best.
We set ambitious goals and work diligently to achieve them, both in and out of school.
We lean on our community for support and encouragement during challenges.
We embrace challenges and mistakes as opportunities for growth and learn from setbacks.
We cultivate a mindset of “Yes!”: Openness and enthusiasm towards new opportunities and experiences. We step outside our comfort zones, try new things, and embrace the unknown.
We explore potential interests, discover passions, and develop talents.
We say “yes” to challenges, risks, feedback and possibilities that can lead to personal and academic growth.
Nativity Preparatory School is an accredited, tuition-free, Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston. Staffed by experienced teachers and dedicated volunteers who work closely with families, the school prepares students for success in high school and college. Nativity’s academically challenging and highly structured environment helps students grow in a love for learning and an abiding sense of responsibility to their community. In the Jesuit tradition, the school promotes the intellectual, spiritual, social, and physical growth that inspires boys from Boston to become men for others.
