Dear Friends,
On a recent fall afternoon, several of our Nativity graduates gathered at the front door ready to visit after a long day of high school classes. As I welcomed them back to Nativity, each one returned to the familiar handshake and warm greeting that they shared throughout their middle school years. There is a delight and even surprise as the young boys I remember have returned as men of incredible presence and confidence. It is a privilege to witness this reunion each time it happens, and it is a blessing to see how often it takes place. Graduates return to Nativity for help in academic classes, advice about courses, and support for the challenge of high school and college transitions. Most of all, they return to Nativity Prep because it feels like home.
During the critical years of adolescent development, Nativity Prep provides a comfortable, safe environment that is lively and energetic but free of the chaos that can surround us. In this school they call home, students are challenged academically as they mature to form bonds of brotherhood with each other and grow in commitment to their families and communities. The years at Nativity are built on a foundation of comprehensive support that extends into high school, college, and beyond, yielding opportunities that were previously unimaginable.
The impact of a Nativity Prep middle school education can be transformative, providing uncompromised access that can alter the trajectory of a young man’s life. As a Jesuit school, we also know that each of us is called to serve others and that our graduates will leave our “home” to go on to have a lasting positive impact that extends far beyond themselves and this school. All of this positive potential is made possible by Nativity supporters like you. I wish to extend my deep gratitude for your generosity and caring over this past year. Through your gifts you have empowered our students to use their education in creation of a better world.
With gratitude,
Brian P. Maher, President

Tim Carey has been one of the most crucial components to the success of our 8th-grade boys and our Graduate Support Office here at Nativity Prep. His selflessness and dedication to our students have helped us all bridge gaps and open doors that may have remained inaccessible without him. We are truly grateful and lucky to have had all his years of volunteering and being a member of the Nativity community.
Xavier Etheridge, Assistant Director of Graduate Support and Admissions
I have worked with Tim in the 7th and 8th grade RLA classes. He is an incredibly encouraging member of our community who champions new teachers. Even after an illustrious career, he approaches every interaction and situation with humility. We are so grateful for his commitment to Nativity.
Sarah Swanson, 2nd Year Teaching Fellow
Tim Carey has been a Nativity volunteer since 2014, after he retired from teaching English at Noble & Greenough School. Tim plays a pivotal role at Nativity by dedicating his time to helping our 8th graders understand the importance of their unique story for their high school application essays. In addition to supporting our students, he also mentors our teaching fellows and assists with our English classes.
“I feel inspired by the people with whom I work. I get to the end of a day at the Nativity, and I feel so fortunate to have been in the company of bright, energetic, brave, and generous individuals, doing what I can to make other people’s lives just a little bit better,” said Tim. “I know that in giving a little, I have received so much more in return. I consider myself to be an extraordinarily fortunate man.”
Tim was named one of the 2023 Myra Kraft Community MVP Award winners, and chose Nativity to be the recipient of the $10,000 gift. With his dedication to us and other Boston organizations, he deserves this recognition, and we are fortunate to have him in our community.

He quickly started his career at Nativity as a teacher and later became the Director of Graduate Support. Xavier Etheridge ‘12
Xavier graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. After completing his degree, Xavier returned to Nativity as Assistant Director of Admissions and Graduate Support. Xavier plays a vital role in ensuring our students are well prepared and capable of navigating any terrain from middle school to high school to college and beyond.
The school has a 30-year history which shows that the model is working. There are some real heavy hitters in the city of Boston who are graduates of Nativity Prep. It is an honor for me to be involved in a school that has made this much of an effective change in the city.
I learned about Nativity through my father, who was involved with Nativity since its inception. When he initially became involved with Nativity he was so excited about it and he made it a part of the next 20 years of his life. However, when he got sick Nativity still wanted a representative from our family to serve on the board and I was honored to have been invited. It was the first time that I had been a part of a board and since then I have learned what it really means to be a part of something significant. Currently, I am a part of the Governance Committee and we find new ways to bring on new trustees that can dedicate their time and talents to promote the school. Nativity is not just about academic success, it’s about developing the whole student; the morality, leadership potential, their physical, and spiritual, characteristics of a person. I think the school takes that approach which is unique from other schools. At the end of 8th grade Nativity doesn’t say goodbye, instead, they continue to help their students open doors to some of the finest high schools in the world that they are regularly getting accepted into; Phillips Exeter, Milton Academy, Boston College High School. Those are the life-changing opportunities that are happening. Nativity stays connected with their students through their high school journey and gives them guidance as they figure out where they will attend college or what their post-high school life is going to look like. These are the life-changing opportunities that are presented when students join the Nativity family.
As a trustee, I think the school is making a difference in the areas of society that I want to see differences made. It’s been challenging watching things on the news and thinking about how we can make an actual change that’s really going to make an impact and I think this school does it in many ways with their approach towards educating their students. They’re making changes to their students lives but it really has an impact on their entire family; the nuclear family and the extended family. The school has a 30-year history which shows that the model is working. There are some real heavy hitters in the city of Boston who are graduates of Nativity Prep. It is an honor for me to be involved in a school that has made this much of an effective change in the city.

From the moment students enroll at Nativity Prep in the 5th grade, they embark on a journey that immediately grants them uncompromised access, endless opportunities, and comprehensive support from our Graduate Support Office. Our Graduate Support Office makes a life-long commitment to ensuring that our students thrive not only in middle school but also in high school, college, and their careers.
The Graduate Support team provides all our alumni mentoring, social-emotional, financial, and career support. Providing resources and programs, the Director and Assistant Director walk alongside our students and graduates as they embark on new journeys. As a result, each student feels supported and empowered to change their narrative.
We are proud that 100% of our graduates complete high school. Many of our students enroll in and complete postsecondary education, either at two-year or four-year institutions or pursue alternative vocational training.
Accompanied by the Graduate Support team, Nativity graduates attend some of the top high schools in Massachusetts and top universities across the country:

Nativity Prep’s Student Sponsorship Program offers a chance for supporters to witness the meaningful impact that Nativity Prep has on the lives of its students. The program allows sponsors to engage with individual students and observe their growth over a four-year period. Student Sponsors have a unique opportunity to witness the transformation that a student undergoes from the time they enter until they graduate. Many of our Student Sponsors have been with Nativity since its inception.
If you are interested in learning more about the Student Sponsorship Program, please contact Laurie Nahigian (lnahigian@nativityboston.org or 857-273-0244).

Our Dinner Program is an essential part of our extended day program. It is made possible entirely by generous benefactors. Whether the meal is provided by a local restaurant or home-cooked, the students thank you for making this life-changing program possible.

Make a one-time or recurring gift that will provide funds that advance our academics, extracurricular activities, and our Graduate Support Program.
Make an impact by funding the education for a student or class. This partnering offers the opportunity to build a rewarding relationship that lasts well after Nativity students graduate.
Nativity is grateful for in-kind gifts in any form. Providing tangible goods, sporting contests, services, or technological equipment not only contributes to our operating expenses but also opens up new opportunities for our students.
HONORARY AND MEMORIAL GIFTS
Gifts to Nativity go beyond supporting the school. A memorial or honorary gift commemorates a loved one who has passed away as well as honors an individual who has had an impact on the donor’s life.
We invite you to attend one of our many events throughout the year or come in for a school visit.
Individuals who commit to Nativity Prep’s future through planned giving bequests are invited to join the 1990 Legacy Society. Gifts through a will, qualified retirement plan, life insurance policy, trust, or pooled life insurance income can help achieve your personal goals while securing a promising future for Nativity Prep students.
If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact:
Laurie Nahigian Director of Advancement at lnahigian@nativityboston.org

Nativity Preparatory School is an accredited, tuition-free, Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston. Staffed by experienced teachers and dedicated volunteers who work closely with families, the school prepares students for success in high school and college. Nativity’s academically challenging and highly structured environment helps students grow in a love for learning and an abiding sense of responsibility to their community. In the Jesuit tradition, the school promotes the intellectual, spiritual, social, and physical growth that inspires boys from Boston to become men for others.
