President’s Report

The end of the year is upon us, and before we look ahead to 2025, I think it’s important to celebrate the wins of 2024.

Members have expressed their need for reliable information to use to train their staff. With NATM being the industry leaders in trailer safety, it only makes sense that we answer the call. NATM Staff have been working all year long to create the NATM Academy.

The NATM Academy is the top tier, on-demand education and safety training for the trailer industry. Led by NATM Education Director Ginger Baker-Sanhueza, the Academy aims to consolidate nearly 40 years of industry knowledge and experience into a robust platform for on-demand education.

The NATM Academy is not just a one-size-fits-all approach. With courses designed in collaboration with NATM’s Education Committee and Technical Committee, the Academy caters to manufacturers, dealers, and suppliers. The courses range from safety training to managerial development, covering a wide spectrum of topics designed to enhance both knowledge and skills.

Our Association places a strong emphasis on member engagement, and the NATM Academy efforts are no different. With the belief that “training doesn't cost, it pays,” the Academy positions knowledge as a key competitive advantage in the industry.

The launch was announced at the 2024 NATM Convention & Trade Show in Las Vegas, marking a pivotal moment in the Association's commitment to advancing the trailer industry.

The 2024 Convention & Trade Show marked several significant wins for the Association. The Academy was introduced to an almost record-breaking crowd in Las Vegas, and the Trade Show Floor hosted 47 brand-new exhibitors, setting a new show record. These achievements highlight the consistent value that NATM Members gain from the Convention each year.

Looking ahead, the 2025 NATM Convention & Trade Show will be here sooner than we think. The Trade Show Floor in Nashville has sold out and expanded, and members are eager for the chance to connect in person. Once again, the Association is bringing new and exciting opportunities to attendees and ensuring they receive exceptional value for their investment.

We hope you’ll join us in Nashville for new features, new

awards, and the chance to make invaluable new business connections. To register, visit www.NATM.com/convention.

Speaking of new, 2025 also will be the year of a brand new NATM Expo. The inaugural NATM Trailer Expo is sure to match the buzz of the Association's previous events.

NATM continues its work to have an inclusive trailer industry, and the Expo works to meet the needs of its Dealer Affiliates as well as manufacturers and suppliers. The target audience to attend and walk through the Trailer Expo includes trailer dealers, as well as fleet and government purchasing agents.

The NATM Trailer Expo will feature trailers under 26,000 lbs. GVWR on the expo floor. Additionally, suppliers and service providers that assist dealerships also will be welcome to exhibit. The workshops and technical sessions of the expo are tailored specifically for dealers and will provide unparalleled learning opportunities.

Attending trade shows and expos is an investment in your company’s future. I hope you’ll check out the 2025 Trailer Expo content, starting on Page 51, and see all the value it will bring to all attendees. We hope you’ll join us for this historical, inaugural event in Oklahoma City, Sept. 16-18, 2025. For more information, visit www.TrailerExpo.com.

NATM is excited to continue bringing the industry together and provide top-notch educational opportunities for the membership. Cheers to all of our 2024 achievements and to all we can accomplish together in 2025! ■

Headquarters REPORT

With the end of the year nearly here, I think it is important to look back on the accomplishments of the Association as we get ready for 2025. 2024 has marked another year of growth for NATM. NATM has increased staff to provide more membership benefits, to hosting Association events, and the continued carrying out of many beloved programs, 2024 was another great year for NATM.

2024 opened incredibly strong for NATM with our Convention & Trade Show in Las Vegas. It was amazing to see how passionate members and exhibitors are for this industry as we had another large year for attendance. May saw members participating in Regulatory Roundup in Washington, D.C. The timing could not have worked better as shortly following Regulatory Roundup, NATM had another fantastic Trailer Safety Week from June 2-8. The fall saw staff hard at work on programming for our newly created 501(c)(3) the National Safe Trailering Council, as well as multiple advancements on NATM Academy courses.

Looking back at the year, it is important to remember NATM’s mission, which is to promote trailer safety and the success of the trailer manufacturing industry through education and advocacy. Looking back at 2024 – NATM has made some incredible strides with relation to the Association’s mission. At the 2024 Convention, NATM brought together a near record of over 1,400 attendees. By bringing the industry together for both the Convention & Trade Show, NATM was able to further educate the industry on best practices via educational sessions and technical forums, while also providing an excellent opportunity for members to walk the trade show floor and meet with potential vendors and network with other members of the light- and medium-duty trailer industry.

As I mentioned above, NATM’s seventh annual Trailer Safety Week was celebrated June 2 through the 8. Boasting more than 540 allies including members, non-members, law enforcement, and state departments of transportation among other interested parties, the awareness campaign continues to grow and work with new groups to promote trailer safety. Trailer safety is important 365 days a year, and it’s not too late to join the movement. To learn more about how your company can get involved, visit www.trailersafetyweek.com/interest.

NATM has continued to focus on building out dealer programming. As part of NATM’s strategic plan to build a more unified industry, NATM will continue to build out programming of value for all member types. The Association has also expanded its educational offerings, with the upcoming

launch of the NATM Academy being a focus of educational programming for members. The Association has also hosted multiple webinars on topics of interest to the industry.

From a government affairs perspective, the Association and its representatives at K&L Gates have been hard at work. In May, NATM Members and Staff came together in Washington, D.C. and had 55 congressional meetings. There they spoke about the Trailer Safety Improvement Act, garnering additional support in the House and requesting Senate companion legislation be created. On Capitol Hill, attendees also provided education about the industry’s commitment to safety, the value of NATM, and industry pain points. NATM is still closely monitoring any movement on the proposed rulemaking relating to side underrides, with specific interest in how this rulemaking would impact the medium-duty trailer industry. While meeting with members of Congress, Roundup participants stressed the importance of using concise language with any potential rulemaking relating to trailers.

As we look ahead to 2025, significant progress has been made in developing NATM Academy, an online, ondemand training platform for the industry. After launch, the Academy will continue to be bolstered with new courses meant to help members build safe trailers.

NATM’s Marketing Staff has continued to find new and unique ways to engage with members and share their stories. Through offerings like NATM’s Woman Crush Wednesday social media campaign, the new Member News Section, and other offerings, NATM’s Marketing Staff want to continue to hear from you, our members. More information can be found at www.NATM.com.

I am proud of all the work accomplished in 2024 and cannot wait to see what 2025 has in store for NATM and the light- and medium-duty trailer industry. I hope you all have amazing holidays surrounded by friends and family. ■

Advisory Committee on Underride Protection Releases Recommendations

The November 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law directed the formation of a statutory committee to provide information, advice, and recommendations to the Secretary of Transportation (Secretary) on safety regulations that would reduce underride crashes and fatalities relating to underride crashes.

The Advisory Committee on Underride Protection (ACUP) was tasked with gathering information as necessary; deliberating on issues relevant to safety regulations related to underride crashes and fatalities from underride crashes; and providing written consensus advice to the Secretary on underride protection to reduce underride crashes and fatalities.

Earlier this year, members of the ACUP released their formal recommendations to the Department of Transportation (DOT). The ACUP report called for dozens of new safety regulations, requested new studies and research on multiple issues, and even alleged impropriety on the part of DOT in developing its cost-benefit analysis.

Below are some notable recommendations from the ACUP report:

Side Underride

› The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should withdraw its previously submitted advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) or reissue a revised ANPRM and cost-benefit analysis that acknowledges and accommodates critiques made by commenters.

› NHTSA should complete a new side impact guard cost-benefit analysis and rulemaking that counts previously omitted underride victim categories, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists.

› NHTSA should require all new semitrailers and single-unit trucks that have crash-incompatible open space(s) along the side(s) to be equipped with side guards capable of preventing injurious passenger compartment intrusion (PCI) when struck by a midsize vehicle at any angle, at any location, and at any closing speed up to and including 40 mph.

Continued on Page 12

Continued from Page 11

› NHTSA should require semitrailers, and single-unit trucks manufactured after 1998 that have crash-incompatible open space(s) along the side(s) to be equipped with side guards capable of preventing injurious PCI when struck by a midsize vehicle at any angle, at any location, and at any closing speed up to and including 40 mph.

› NHTSA should require side guards to also prevent a vulnerable road user from passing underneath the guarded vehicle in an interaction with the side of the vehicle.

Rear Underride

› The 2022 Rear Impact Guard Rule should be amended to require that all new trailers meet the IIHS TOUGHGUARD test protocol or equivalent, which includes the ability to withstand a 30% rear overlap crash at 35 mph.

› NHTSA should review and update FMVSS 223/224 standards in response to advancements in technology.

› All trailers manufactured between 1998 to the current time that do not have IIHS TOUGHGUARD awarded rear impact guards should be retrofitted with crash-proven reinforcement device(s).

› NHTSA should regulate single-unit trucks with the same rear impact guard standards that currently only apply to semitrailers.

› FMCSA & NHTSA must expeditiously complete Heavy Vehicle Automatic Emergency Brake Rulemaking for all classes of Commercial Motor Vehicles.

› FMCSA should issue stronger conspicuity tape requirements, at a minimum, a requirement to maintain and replace conspicuity tape every 5 years.

› FMCSA should require single-unit trucks to adhere to conspicuity tape requirements.

Front Underride

› NHTSA should issue an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Front Impact Guards.

› NHTSA may harmonize with global front override regulations, including UNECE-93 and any revisions to it, in order to provide improved motor vehicle safety, as indicated in Section 24211 of the IIJA.

The ACUP’s policy recommendations would have immense implications for how trailers are regulated and how trailers would need to be manufactured in the future, but it is important to note that these are only recommendations from an advisory body, and the business of advancing actual rulemakings will be carried out at the discretion of the Secretary and NHTSA.

As the rulemaking process moves forward, it will be absolutely critical to monitor the potential implications of these recommendations, should they be adopted. ■

Empower the Industry: Become a Convention Sponsor Today

Revenue generated from the Convention is directly funneled back into benefits for members including government affairs representation and advocacy, the Compliance Verification Program, the creation of reputable safety resources and education, the establishment of the NATM Academy training program, and nationwide Trailer Safety Week efforts. The money generated from the annual Convention is used to improve trailer safety across the nation, and it is thanks to the support of sponsors that NATM is able to offset costs for the Association, attendees, and ultimately the industry at large.

Not only does sponsoring provide exceptional brand exposure and visibility within the light- and mediumduty trailer manufacturing realm, it also exemplifies your commitment to the industry. For those looking to reach industry decision-makers, this is the event to create a buzz!

Sponsorships are still available for the annual NATM Convention & Trade Show. The success of the NATM Convention is directly tied to the support of its generous sponsors. National Association of Trailer Manufacturers Named an Ally in Action by USDOT

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has officially named the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) as an Ally in Action to join its National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS) Campaign. Launched in 2022, the NRSS is a comprehensive approach to address the crisis of deaths on our roadways.

"We appreciate USDOT acknowledging the crucial role trailers and trailer safety have in enhancing overall roadway safety," stated Savana Morrison, NATM Marketing Director. "For almost four decades, NATM has been dedicated to safety through various programs and initiatives. It is rewarding to see both the Compliance Verification Program and Trailer Safety Week being recognized for their significant impact on promoting roadway safety culture."

The NATM Compliance Verification Program (CVP) is a mandatory program for all NATM Trailer Manufacturer Members. This program involves multiple components, all of which are geared toward creating safer trailers and in turn, safer roadways.

While the CVP concentrates on establishing processes and best practices for trailer manufacturers to create safe trailers, NATM acknowledges that even a compliant trailer can be operated in unsafe manners. This is where Trailer Safety Week steps in — an annual safety initiative that boosts road safety by raising awareness about trailer safety among end-users, dealers, and manufacturers through educational campaigns.

"NATM is well aware of the significance of safety and education," noted Alex Stowe, NATM Executive Director. "For almost 40 years, these core principles have steered our Association, and we are excited about advancing our dedication to safer roads for everyone. We commend USDOT for their commitment to reaching zero fatalities on our nation’s roadways and are excited to be part of this important initiative.”

NATM is dedicated to leveraging its extensive safety knowledge and experience, existing partnerships with key stakeholders nationwide, and our network of dedicated members to increase the impact of the NRSS campaign. ■

Correlating VIN Numbers with NATM Decal Numbers

The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) office fields calls on a regular basis from law enforcement trying to determine if a trailer has been stolen, and/or trying to locate the rightful owner of a trailer. Usually, law enforcement will be able to provide the manufacturer of the trailer, but often the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) number has been removed or is undecipherable. Surprisingly, many thieves will remove all identification marks on a stolen trailer but overlook the NATM Decal and leave it on the trailer with its own specific serial number.

This NATM Decal serial number would help law

enforcement determine who the trailer belongs to, but most trailer manufacturers do not keep records correlating the NATM Decal serial number with the VIN number of the trailer that specific decal was placed on. For this reason, NATM suggests trailer manufacturers keep records that correlate which NATM Decal serial number gets placed on each trailer’s particular VIN number. This way if the only information law enforcement has is the trailer manufacturer and an NATM Decal serial number, that information coupled with the manufacturer’s record keeping would be sufficient to determine the VIN number of the trailer and provide contact information for the first retail customer of that trailer.

Another often overlooked loss mitigation strategy is to stay one step ahead of the thieves by hiding an extra VIN plate or VIN stamp in a secret location on all of the trailers manufactured. This could be located inside a frame rail where no one would know to look. Of course, thieves cannot grind a VIN number off a trailer if they do not know where it is located. Even if a trailer is stolen and the left front roadside VIN placard is removed, this secondary “hidden” location VIN number could be the additional factor that returns the trailer to its rightful owner.

A second option would be that VIN label producing software from NATM Member companies, like Vin-Eze and the FedCert Suite offered by Dec-0-Art, produce extra VIN tags with each label to make it convenient to affix those in multiple, inconspicuous areas. Those would be the best utilized on the inside of an enclosed trailer, for example.

With all sorts of property crimes on the rise in today’s world, and trailers are not immune, it is surprising that only one

state currently, Tennessee, requires the VIN numbers on trailers to be stamped into the trailer. There is no federal requirement to do this, so in 2004, Tennessee passed its own VIN law, TN Code Ann. § 55-5-106(f), requiring every new trailer sold in Tennessee on or after Jan. 1, 2005, to be assigned its own unique identification number and to have that number stamped on the trailer, either on the tongue or the frame. The definition of “stamped” does not include being embossed on a traditional metal VIN plate riveted to the frame. The best combination may be to utilize both the traditional riveted or stick on-type VIN placards, and the stamped-into-the-frame method.

Similarly, NATM reminds members to keep theft prevention and security a high priority. What can trailer manufacturers do to prevent inventory theft, or to aid in stolen trailer recovery?

A variety of hitch locks, wheel locks, tracking devices, and alarms are available from many NATM Associate Members. Search the Supplier Directory on the NATM Website for locks and other theft deterrent accessories. ■

Unveiling Tire Technologies: Recap of NATM’s Webinar Series — Part One

The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) Fall 2024 webinar series kicked off with an engaging and informative session on the latest advancements in tire and wheel assemblies and combinations.

Introduction and Objectives

The webinar began with opening remarks by NATM’s Education Director Ginger Baker Sanhueza who set the stage by outlining the objectives of the series: to equip trailer manufacturers, dealers, and suppliers with cutting-edge knowledge to enhance safety, performance, and customer satisfaction. She was joined by NATM Technical Director Scott Crimmins and Murat Gocay, the chief technology officer at Taskmaster Components.

Taskmaster Components: A Legacy of Innovation

Gocay provided a brief overview of Taskmaster Components, a company with roots dating back to 1985 when it was known as Tom's Tire, a small retail shop in rural East Texas. Today, Taskmaster has grown into a leading supplier of trailer tire and wheel assemblies, but it remains a familyowned business under the leadership of CEO Amanda Walker. The company continues to prioritize quality and innovation, staying true to founder Tom Walker’s principle of “Doing things right and doing the right things.”

Gocay highlighted Taskmaster’s commitment to innovation, particularly in addressing the common issue of tire outof-roundness, which can lead to vibrations and premature wear. Taskmaster has partnered with top-tier automotive tire and wheel mounting machine providers to develop a process that match-mounts and balances trailer tires at scale, reducing vibrations and enhancing ride quality.

Deep Dive into Tire and Wheel Assemblies

The session’s main focus was on tire and wheel assemblies, where Gocay shared his expertise on several key aspects:

› Axle Sizes and Tire Performance: The relationship between axle sizes and tire performance was explored, with an emphasis on the importance of selecting the right combinations to optimize performance.

› Stud and Wheel Combinations: Gocay outlined best practices for matching bolt holes, studs, and lug nuts, providing a detailed chart of correct combinations for light and medium-duty trailer axles. He also highlighted common mistakes, such as using incorrect lug nuts, which can lead to significant safety issues.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

In this segment, Gocay addressed some of the most frequent issues encountered by trailer manufacturers:

› Mismatched Components: Gocay emphasized that a 16” wheel is designed for a 9/16” stud and lug nut, yet many manufacturers fail to adhere to this, resulting in a high volume of complaints. Diagrams and case studies illustrated the consequences of such mistakes, reinforcing the importance of correct component matching.

› Load Capacity Confusion: He also cautioned against the confusion that can arise when trailers are equipped with tires that have a higher load capacity than the axle’s carrying capacity. This mismatch can lead to users overloading their trailers, thinking they are safe based on the tire’s sidewall information.

Q&A Highlights

The session concluded with a Q&A portion, where Gocay fielded questions from participants. He hinted at upcoming innovations from Taskmaster, including a new wheel design set to be unveiled by Nov. 1, promising increased load capacity, reduced vibrations, and enhanced damage protection. Additionally, he discussed the impact of high-speed tires on trailer safety, stressing the need for manufacturers to design trailers that can safely accommodate these faster tires.

The webinar provided valuable insights for attendees, equipping them with practical knowledge and a glimpse into the future of tire and wheel technology. Join NATM for part two of the series, on Oct. 17, where Kenda Americana will focus on tire wear, maintenance, and aging — critical aspects for prolonging tire life and maximizing performance. Members can access the webinar recordings at www. NATM.com/natm-educational-webinars. MODULAR BUCKING BARS

NATM Connect Has Arrived

An important part of any association is the opportunity to connect with those who best understand your interests and challenges. One of the new benefits included in the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers' (NATM) Dealer Affiliate Program provides exactly those opportunities.

NATM Connect is an online community forum where Dealer Affiliates can engage in discussion and receive feedback and resources from other professional peers around the trailer industry. The community forum is private and provides a space for authentic discussion that doesn’t include pushy sales pitches or outsiders with unclear motives.

NATM Dealer Affiliates are encouraged to share successes and challenges, bring questions, give constructive feedback, and provide perspective in all manners related to operating and working at a trailer dealership.

The community forum is structured like any other discussion board. Users can post topics and pose questions under industry specific and relevant categories. This includes categories that align with other dealer program benefits, such as sales, parts, and service department operations, leadership development, financial management, office management, and talent and HR management. In addition, users can create categories to really make the forum their own.

“I enjoy the opportunity to connect with fellow dealership owners across the country to have group discussions on various topics,” said Ronnie Enns, an NATM Connect user. “It’s also helpful to be able to look up conversations that other dealers have had about specific topics. And I can send private messages to individuals to have one on one conversations.”

Why should you and your dealership staff use NATM Connect?

Support and Collaboration

If you operate with a small team, NATM Connect allows staff to gain support and opportunities to collaborate that potentially they are unable to do with just their coworkers, which could aid in improving their job functions and help them succeed. This is a great chance to talk to others because they may have had similar experiences and be able to assist in providing different solutions and points of views.

Access to Knowledge and Expertise

NATM Dealer Affiliates represent the core knowledge base

of the industry and decades of crucial experience. NATM Connect allows you to instantly tap into that expertise. Whether you keep running into supply shortages or just want to try a new product or company for your business, you can get expert advice from your fellow dealers.

Opportunities for Networking

NATM Connect allows you and your staff the opportunity to build your network, forming bonds and relationships for both professional and personal growth and development. NATM understands that the trailer industry is a tight knit community, and it can be hard to connect with all dealers. This is a great chance to expand your network and resources.

Increased Staff Motivation, Engagement

Sharing experience and commonality of interest can lead to greater staff motivation and engagement as it helps your staff learn and grow in their jobs. This means your staff gets the chance to connect with others in similar situations and can be inspired by others to try new and innovative practices. When you and your team have a consistent support system to look to when in need, you are guaranteed to look at problems in a different light as well as find solutions with more ease.

NATM is excited to share that it has received positive feedback about NATM Connect and the beneficial impact it is making.

“Being able to connect instantaneously with other, more experienced dealers that are willing to help share best practices and answer questions I otherwise wouldn’t be able to answer on my own,” said Shane Ehrsam, an NATM Connect user.

NATM is looking forward to the community and networking this newly released benefit will offer! Dealer Affiliates now have access to NATM Connect and should have received an email on how to access the forum and get started. NATM can't wait to see all the exciting conversations you start!

Give Your Service Department the Kudos They Deserve with NATM’s Call to Service

As the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) continues to discuss benefits and needs for Dealer Affiliates, the necessity to place more focus on the service aspect within trailer dealerships has arisen. While NATM is developing resources that assist in addressing this need, it also is looking into ways to highlight this essential department. The Association wants to help dealerships show off their service department teams and celebrate the invaluable work they do. NATM is launching a series of spotlight features where NATM shares stories and achievements of individual service team members or the entire team.

Through the implementation of this marketing campaign, NATM aims to highlight and acknowledge the service department for its vital contribution to the success of trailer dealerships. Here’s how it works:

1. Have An Awesome Team In Your Service Department

It’s hard to just choose one person if you’ve got a killer team that all adds major value to your business. So, whether it’s a one-person show or an entire team behind your service department, NATM wants to hear about it!

2. Be Ready To Brag All About Their Accomplishments

It’s your time to brag! Share what makes your nominee/s the greatest and how they add value to your business.

Have you been hearing praise from your customers? What about other staff members who have noticed the hard work going on in the back of the house where all the service department magic happens? Tell NATM all about it!

3.

Group Photos To Put Faces To Names

Taking photos can be tough, especially when everyone is hard at work on ensuring happy customers. However, NATM wants to put some faces to all that hard work going on! Gather your service department and say “Cheese,” or even better, say “Best Service Department,” to show them the love and appreciation they deserve.

4. Fill Out Our Call To Service Form

It’s a quick form that the person nominating the Service Department will fill out. It just asks some questions so that NATM can ensure that all the amazing things about your team get the right attention and focus. Plus, it will also be a great asset to NATM Staff if your selected team gets a feature blog post!

NATM is excited to see all your submissions and can’t wait to highlight all the amazing things your Service Department is doing. Have a specific question that didn’t get answered here? Please reach out to NATM Marketing Specialist Izabella Chesney at Izabella.Chesney@natm.com for assistance. ■

Meet the NATM Dealer Committee Members: A Conversation with Ronnie Enns

In July 2024, National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) staff members Andrea Boetticher and Izabella Chesney began a new series of interviews to learn more about the members of the 2024-2025 NATM Dealer Committee. NATM is excited to be continuing this exciting series of giving you an inside view of who represents NATM Dealer Affiliates. The following is a conversation with Ronnie Enns, Chief Executive Officer of Happy Trailers.

What brought you to the trailer industry?

I grew up in Paris, Texas, where within about a 60-mile radius, I’d say, probably half of the black iron trailers in the country are manufactured. Because of that, I was always around trailers. A lot of my friends and their parents either worked at a trailer company or owned a trailer company. I was kind of an outsider in that my dad did construction and we had a used car lot that we would work on weekends.

When I graduated high school, I went to go work with my dad in his contracting business and hated it. So instead, he knew a guy that owned a trailer manufacturing company and helped me get a job there as the owner’s assistant. In that job, I learned everything about trailers, talking to dealers, invoicing and inventory, pretty much anything that you would have to do in a small trailer manufacturing company.

When I was 19 working at the trailer manufacturing company, I learned that the owner of one of the dealerships we worked with was planning to retire and wanted to sell his business. I always had an interest in dealerships from my experience with our car dealership, so my dad and I decided to combine the two, and we bought this trailer dealership – Martin Trailer Sales. My dad wanted to continue his contracting, so he put me in charge of the dealership, and we officially renamed it Happy Trailer Sales.

Very quickly, we realized we wanted to grow and after 9 months, Johnny Loewen, my brother-in-law and business partner, opened our second location. And almost every year after that we opened another location. We will be opening our tenth location in a few months from now.

Tell us a little more about your company.

We have five partner owners and 56 employees at Happy Trailer Sales. Earlier this year, we acquired another trailer business to open our first location outside of Texas and one of the owners joined our team at Happy Trailers as an owner. We operate pretty lean, with about 4-5 employees at each store. We also have a back-office team that supports the stores, some who work at one of the store locations, and others that work remotely.

Our core purpose as a company is to create a dealership experience that doesn’t suck. It is a simple phrase that is very blunt, and it can mean a lot of different things. When people hear the word “dealership,” there’s a certain angst that overcomes them and they start to feel stressed. When they hear the word salesman, they think, “Oh this person is going to try to get me.”

We’re focused on trying to make the process straightforward and transparent. We are striving to make the buying process easy. We were one of the first trailer dealerships to advertise our trailers with pricing online. I started by creating a WordPress website and just posted pictures of every trailer we had. People were going to know exactly what we had in stock and what the price was. At the time in 2013, it seemed somewhat revolutionary because it was rare to see that from any trailer dealership.

More recently though, we have been focusing on ecommerce, working with a company to allow customers to buy a trailer from their couch. People can go through the whole process from start to finish, or they can use it to speed up the process with e-signatures, deposit collection and the

financing process. It really saves customers time, allowing them to not have to spend so much time at our dealership.

What do you find most rewarding about what you do?

Empowering others and building teams. It has been hugely rewarding for me to find people’s skills that surpass my own or to be able to train people to do things better and then watch as they take it further than I ever did. Building a skilled team makes owning a business more enjoyable because when you’re doing everything alone it is exhausting. I didn’t take a vacation for I think four or five years and I missed so much at home. An important family function would be coming up and then some disaster would happen at the business and, being spread so thin, I had to deal with it.

For the first several years, leadership was just not that important when I had to focus on running the business.

A huge turning point for me as a business leader happened

about halfway through my journey. John Maxwell, leadership guru, held a conference in Waxahachie, Texas, of all places. Before attending that conference, most of my knowledge and expertise came through experience, but he inspired me to pick up a book, to learn to get better as a leader, and to help other people grow as well. That inspired me to start listening to podcasts and audiobooks, just trying to learn more and more.

And as I continued to learn and grow, building a good team and focusing on leadership has become really important and I think that’s probably the most rewarding part. I realized that if I want to keep doing this, I want to get the right people around me and invest in the people I work with.

What changes are you excited to see in the future in terms of benefits for the NATM Dealer Affiliate Program and what the committee is working on? What are you most excited about for the future?

I’m excited for the networking opportunities with other dealers. I’m excited for hopefully increased information sharing between manufacturers and dealers and collaboration together to build a healthier industry.

What are you excited about for the inaugural NATM Trailer Expo in 2025?

I am excited to see what the approach for the new show will be. Of course, I’ll be excited to see what trailers are there. I’m a trailer nerd, so I will want to see what people are building, how they’re building it. I think my favorite part of any trade show is getting to connect with everyone, so getting to do some networking with other dealers and other industry members. And, you know if John Maxwell shows up, that’d be exciting.

NATM is excited to see all the great things Ronnie Enns will be doing on the committee! The Association looks forward to sharing more insights with Members and Dealer Affiliates on who is representing the Dealer Affiliates and assisting in growing the Dealer Affiliate Benefit Program. Keep an eye out for the next conversation with the Dealer Committee Members! ■

Claims Handling is Key!

As we covered in the last edition of Tracks, extended warranties and protection products are a large and rapidly growing business. Consumers spent more than $51 billion on warranty and protection products last year and that number is expected to grow to $85 billion by 2032. This growth is largely fueled by consumers who are looking for peace of mind when making purchases and nimble retailers who are quickly adapting to meet this demand by offering consumers easy access to protection products at the point of sale.

Peace of mind is more than the key factor in the decision to purchase extended warranties, it is critical in maintaining customer satisfaction and solidifying retail and brand loyalty. The single-most detrimental event effecting customer satisfaction and threatening brand loyalty is product failure. Consumers are quick to abandon those products and brands that fail to perform. A recent study for Fortune showed that 81% of consumers lose trust in a company when they have a bad product experience. Unfortunately for the trailer manufacturer and dealer, these customers are likely lost for life unless that trust can be restored.

The good news is that warranty products provide both the manufacturer and dealer a second chance to reestablish the trust that was lost by product failure. The 2024 Retail Protection Report conducted by Cover Genius surveyed more than 11,000 consumers and showed that 87% of consumers would recommend a brand or retailer to others if their warranty claim is handled well. Amazingly, a positive warranty claim experience virtually eliminates the negative associated with product failure. Think about those numbers for a minute and what they mean for dealers and manufacturers who work hard to build their brand and establish customer loyalty. Warranties and an effective claims process can actually increase customer satisfaction, loyalty, and lead to referrals.

The opportunity for warranty and protection products to create repeat customers and expand your customer base only works if the claim process is handled correctly. That is why the decision was made to partner with Portfolio to provide their expertise and claims administration capabilities for the NATM warranty program. According to Joseph Gillum, Director of Product Development at Portfolio, “I cannot stress enough how important it is for the consumer to have a positive claim experience. Consumers buy protection products for peace of mind and if the claim process adds to their peace of mind, then the dealer and manufacturer regain the loyalty of that customer for future trailer purchases.”

Portfolio has been handling warranty claims for more than 30 years and is widely regarded as the “Best-of-the-Best” in

warranty claims resolution. To date, Portfolio’s claims team has handled over one million claims, almost all of which involved a personal conversation with a member of their experienced claim team. “When a customer calls our warranty department they are doing so because they need help and the last thing they want to do is attempt to find answers through an automated service system. They want to talk with someone who can understand their situation and offer help. Our claims handlers are experienced, many are ASE Certified Mechanics or Master Technicians, they understand trailers and are able to engage with the consumer to resolve claims quickly and fairly,” says Gillum.

Without doubt, the two most important elements of a successful warranty claims process are personal communications and timely feedback and resolution of claims. Again, consumers are reaching out to claims because they have a problem, a situation that threatens their peace of mind and loyalty to brand and dealer. This is the precise moment that consumers need to be heard, they need to speak with someone who can empathize with their situation and offer clear direction and resolution of their claim. The very last thing they need is to be passed around from one claim representative to the next or, even worse, forced to manage their situation by navigating through an automated phone system.

There was a great deal of thought and due diligence performed to find the best claims management partner to support the warranty program for NATM Dealer Affiliates. Portfolio’s claims team is truly unmatched in the industry and their knowledge and ability to quickly manage claims will provide dealers and manufacturers with the best opportunity to solidify and strengthen their customer base.

The warranty program for NATM Dealer Affiliates continues to grow as dealers learn more about the opportunity and the team assembled to support them. In the next addition of Tracks, we will shed more light on the consultants who help support the program by working directly with dealers to install, train and support a dealer warranty program.

Marsh McLennan Agency will continue to highlight the NATM warranty program in future Tracks publications.

NATM’s warranty program is overseen by John Kerr of Marsh McLennan Agency. For more information, please reach out to him at John.Kerr@MarshMMA.com. ■

NATM Trailer Expo Launching 2025

NATM Announces Inaugural Trailer Expo for 2025

As the not-for-profit 501(c)(6) trade organization that brought you Trailer Safety Week, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is expanding its educational efforts and support to trailer dealers through the launch of the NATM Trailer Expo: The ultimate light- and medium-duty trailering event of the year. The first NATM Trailer Expo will take place in Oklahoma City, Sept. 16-18, 2025.

This event will bring together all key stakeholders of the light- and medium-duty trailer industry, including trailer dealers, trailer manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, and automotive tow vehicle OEMs. The target audience to attend and walk through the Trailer Expo includes trailer dealers, as well as fleet and government purchasing agents.

The NATM Trailer Expo will, of course, feature an exposition of trailers under 26,000 lbs GVWR on the trade show floor. Additionally, suppliers and service providers that assist dealerships will also be welcome to exhibit.

Booth sales for the 2025 Trailer Expo opened this

summer. Information about the booth sales process and dates can be found on Page 61, but make sure to sign up for communications regarding the show at www.NATM.com.

Trailers with a Purpose: NATM Reinvesting Trailer Expo Profits for a Better Industry

As the leader in national towing safety efforts, dealers have looked to NATM for resources for their customers and their businesses. Over the last decade, NATM has fielded frequent requests to close the gap that exists in the trailer dealer realm regarding reputable education, business resources, and selfgovernance. As requested, NATM is exponentially expanding its dealer support efforts, for more information turn to Page 61. To foot the bill for these new efforts, the NATM Trailer Expo was created.

Continued on Page 53

Continued from Page 51

Similar to NATM’s annual Convention & Trade Show held in February, which funds Association programming dedicated to trailer manufacturers, the NATM Trailer Expo will utilize the revenue generated from the event to fund dealer-specific programming and benefits. As a not-for-profit association, the profits generated from the Trailer Expo will be reinvested into Dealer Affiliate benefits and industry-wide programming such as Trailer Safety Week, the launch of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit National Trailer Safety Council, the NATM Academy, Dealer Connect network, and more. No other organization in the light- and medium-duty trailer industry utilizes booth sales, sponsorship dollars, and registration revenue to further nationwide trailer safety efforts and launch costly programming to assist trailer dealers.

The primary focus of NATM is directed toward generating benefits for its members and affiliates to further its mission to improve trailer safety. As a not-for-profit, NATM prioritizes the member and affiliate interests over its financial gains as it serves the entire light- and mediumduty trailer industry. The Association operates with a commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial environment for its members and affiliates rather than seeking profits for itself. This approach underscores NATM's dedication to supporting and advancing the interests of the trailering community, reinforcing a collaborative and safetydriven mindset for all key stakeholders at every level.

OKC offers an exceptional dining and drinking scene for offsite, after-hours networking with customers

Back to Our Roots: Returning to the Beginning

NATM was founded in Chickasha, Oklahoma, in 1987 when five livestock trailer manufacturers unified for better benefits. Nearly 40 years since its inception, NATM is returning to its roots with its first Oklahoma-based event geared specifically for trailer dealers. This event will celebrate the success, growth, and expansion the Association has had over the last four decades leading the industry. Returning “Back to Our Roots” in Oklahoma marks a fresh restart, a full circle, in programming in which NATM launches a new chapter for the trailer industry – this time incorporating trailer dealerships. The launch of The NATM Trailer Expo demonstrates NATM’s understanding of the importance of unifying for the greater good of the trailer industry – just like the five original founding member companies understood back in 1987.

Embracing a collective vision for advancing end-user towing knowledge, NATM is starting a new chapter of collaboration. The trailer industry is stronger together, and this unification is a major step forward in improving towing traffic safety at all levels, as well as supporting the profitability of its members and affiliates.

OKC: Where the Heartland Meets Cutting-Edge Technology

Oklahoma City's tagline is, “Where the heartland meets cutting-edge technology,” which also is a fitting description of the trailer industry's rural roots and its future incorporating technology to improve the industry at the manufacturing, sales, and end-user levels. Not only is OKC conveniently located in the heart of the nation, it sits amid the trailer manufacturing industry and lies within a three hours drive of Fort Worth, Texas, which has proven an ideal location for NATM's programming and contributed to record-breaking success for its annual February Convention & Trade Show.

OKC offers an exceptional dining and drinking scene for offsite, after-hours networking with customers. Fine dining and steakhouses, craft breweries, trendy bars, and sophisticated cocktail lounges are scattered throughout the city, offering a vibrant nightlife for attendees to unwind and socialize

after a long day at the NATM Trailer Expo. Trailer dealers, manufacturers, and suppliers alike will have plenty of options to wine and dine their customers during the week of the show.

State-Of-The-Art Convention Center and Omni Host Hotel

The inaugural 2025 NATM Trailer Expo will be held at the Oklahoma City Convention Center, which was completed in 2020. This convention center is a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility that stands as a testament to modernity and innovation. With its top-notch amenities, spacious meeting rooms, and expansive trade show floor, the OKC Convention Center will not only meet needs but exceed the highest of standards.

The Omni Oklahoma City Hotel is the host hotel for the event and is conveniently located directly across from the OKC Convention Center, which will host the event.

Completed in 2021, the 17-story hotel offers luxurious guest rooms and dramatic views of the nearby Scissortail Park and the OKC skyline. Additionally, there is a rooftop hotel pool with downtown city views and excellent onsite dining and bar options. Take time for R&R after a week of working the show floor at Omni’s onsite Mokara Spa.

The Omni Oklahoma City Hotel stands out as a pinnacle of beauty and modernity among the venues at which NATM has previously hosted. Renowned for its luxurious accommodations, and sophisticated design, the Omni offers a truly exceptional experience for attendees. The convenience of the neighboring hotel and exhibit hall locations cannot be beaten. NATM has negotiated a hotel room block rate of only $230 per night, and the hotel reservation link will be live this winter. Please note, NATM will not authorize any group hotel room services to call you or to solicit your business! These third parties also use the NATM logo in their communications, so please ensure to book with those with emails ending in @natm.com.

Elevating Dealer Success Takes Center Stage in Programming

The NATM Trailer Expo will focus on elevating dealer success in the Educational Sessions. With a nearly four-decade track record, NATM has consistently demonstrated its unwavering commitment to its members by providing exemplary support, valuable resources, and dynamic programming and will continue to offer such at the NATM Trailer Expo.

Understanding the evolving needs of its Dealer Affiliates, NATM conducted a comprehensive survey across the country to gain insights into the specific requirements of dealers. The findings underscore a shared goal among dealers to enhance profitability and elevate the end-user experience and knowledge. These crucial insights gleaned from discussions with dealers will serve as the foundation for the NATM Trailer Expo programming with a focus on elevating dealer success.

Participate in the Trailer Expo

Location and Workshop Survey.

In her vast discussions and meetings with dealers, NATM Dealer Programming Specialist Andrea Boetticher has found that these dealerships are small businesses, often family-owned and their main focus is profitability. As a result, the in-person educational lineup will be geared towards increasing the profitability of dealerships. Profitability is not just determined by the sales process, but by overall business practices which NATM plans to assist with. Boetticher also has found that dealers want to meet with their peers, and NATM intends to create business engagement groups and connect dealers with non-competitors to discuss challenges, solutions, and more.

NATM is soliciting feedback from Dealer Affiliates on what topics they want addressed with the in-person workshop lineup. Texas, known for its booming trailer manufacturing industry, has proven to be an ideal location for NATM's programming, contributing to record-breaking success. Its central location makes it convenient for NATM Trailer Manufacturer Members to drive in and exhibit their latest models. Act Now, Shape Tomorrow: 2025 NATM Trailer Expo Booth Sales Fund Industry Advancement as

Not-For-Profit

In a remarkable stride towards driving change and uniting the industry for progress, the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) opened booth sales on August 21, 2024 for the inaugural NATM Trailer Expo. The NATM Trailer Expo will take place in Oklahoma City, Sept. 1618, 2025 at the brand new Oklahoma City Convention Center and Omni Hotel. This pivotal event marks a new chapter for the light- and medium-duty trailer industry, underscoring NATM's unwavering commitment to enhancing roadway safety and fostering industry growth for nearly 40 years.

As the only not-for-profit trade organization dedicated to the light- and medium-duty trailer industry, NATM will be reinvesting revenue generated from the NATM Trailer Expo booth sales back into programs that benefit dealers, trailer manufacturers, end-users and ultimately the industry and roadways at-large. This reinvestment is a cornerstone of NATM's dedication to its Members and the broader community. The revenue from the booth sales

will fund critical initiatives aimed at improving trailer safety nationwide through its dealer network, expanding educational resources, and advocating for the industry.

The significance of this effort cannot be overstated. By channeling the proceeds from the Trailer Expo into these vital programs, NATM ensures that its mission and efforts to promote trailer safety and the success of the trailer industry can expand exponentially. This approach mirrors the successful model of NATM's Convention & Trade Show that takes place in February, where the generated revenue supports year-round programming. This allows NATM to keep membership dues affordable for yet another year, despite the pressures of inflation and rising costs.

The opening of booth sales for the NATM Trailer Expo is more than an opportunity for trailer manufacturers, suppliers and service providers to showcase their products and services. It represents a collective effort to drive progress and unite for the betterment of the industry.

As NATM embarks on this new chapter, it invites all members of the light- and medium-duty trailer community to join in this transformative journey, ensuring a safer and more prosperous future for all as we open booth sales on Aug. 21. For the inaugural event, the booth sales selection timeline will be based on membership longevity beginning with its founding members from 1987.

Support the Industry Through NATM Trailer Expo Sponsorships

The National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is headed to Oklahoma City for the inaugural 2025 Trailer Expo taking place Sept. 16-18, 2025, and the Association has several sponsorship opportunities available. Sponsoring the NATM Trailer Expo helps the Association’s effort to improve safety and the goal of unifying the industry.

As the only not-for-profit trade organization in the lightand medium-duty trailer industry, the revenue generated from the NATM Trailer Expo will directly fund the NATM Dealer Affiliate and membership programming and benefits. Additionally, NATM is bringing in dealers to help lead programming with representation on the NATM Board of Directors and Dealer Committee.

Not only does sponsoring provide excellent brand exposure and visibility within the light- and medium-duty trailer manufacturing realm, but it also demonstrates your commitment to the industry. If you are looking to reach the decision-makers in the industry, this is the event to make an impression! What better way to market to dealer attendees than to show your support of NATM by sponsoring an item or event at the Trailer Expo?

The NATM Trailer Expo offers an array of sponsorship opportunities to elevate your brand, including the following sponsorships, which are available:

Branded materials also may be set out by the sponsor.

Virtual Swag Bag Advertisement- $1,000

Full Prospect Reach$1,500 | 4 Available

› Reach potential customers before the show even starts by sponsoring a full-prospect email. Being featured in an official email will have attendees talking about your company long before they even step foot on the show floor. Emails include registration announcements and Trade Show announcements.

Attendee Badge - $6,000

› Reach every single conference attendee by placing your company’s logo on all pre-registered attendee badges. This badge grants access to events and is given to all pre-registered attendees when they arrive at the expo.

Sponsorships play a crucial role in strengthening your marketing strategy. They enable you to connect with a specific and engaged audience, contributing essential financial support to facilitate top-notch education, networking opportunities, and trailer exhibitions. This benefits trailer dealers, manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers specializing in units under 26,000 lbs GVWR. These events showcase a collaborative platform, uniting trailer dealers with trailer manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers offering components and services tailored to enhance the success of dealerships and service departments.

Member Companies Invest in Future Generations with Intern Programs

Everyone is finally getting back into the swing of the new school year, but National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) Member companies had a hand in keeping students busy over the summer months.

Having interns looks different from company to company. Piedmont Plastics’ internship program is hyper-focused and all its interns are students interested in sales.

“It's really a sales support specialist intern program,” said Amy Woodard, marketing and communications manager with Piedmont Plastics. “We have 57 branch locations across North America. So, what our talent team really does is they work with different universities throughout North America and partner with them go to career fairs, things like that, and find really sales-focused students. Sometimes their sales, sometimes they come from operations or supply chain side. They’re interns who are either going to school or their hometown is in close proximity

to one of our branch locations. Those interns will work at that branch location that they're closest to for a nine-week program over the summer.”

A hot topic for the manufacturing industry as a whole in recent years has been the hiring shortage. Piedmont Plastics uses internship programs to fill that gap.

“Our goal is to help create a pipeline of talent for both our organization and really the performance plastics industry as a whole, by giving people exposure to the industry and the business and the distribution side,” Woodard said. “But at the end of the day for us, and the reason we invest in it and have it is really to promote our own talent pipeline. So, hoping that these students will come back and work for us at our branches.”

students. Talent Sourcing Specialist Taylor Whitescarver oversees all of Piedmont's campus recruiting nationwide.

“Good old-fashioned campus recruiting – You're either going to see my posting online somewhere or I'm going to be on your campus, then I'm going to meet you through a career fair,” Whitescarver said.

Other members take a more laid-back approach, like Taskmaster Components. Taskmaster had two interns over the summer. Bianca has interned in the company’s IT department for the past two years and came to the company through her mom, who is the director of strategic accounts. Clayton worked for a trailer manufacturer last summer and is a family friend of the company president studying civil engineering at Texas A&M.

“Bianca helped with SharePoint and other IT issues that we were working on,” Taskmaster HR Manager Ken Stansbury

said. “Clayton, we just put him in every department and had him rotate through and just try and learn the business in general.”

While Bianca stayed in and focused on the IT department, Taskmaster moved Clayton to as many departments as possible says Taskmaster’s Director of Administration Brittani Lewis.

“We had him out in the warehouse for the week for a week, and then he helped us on the marketing side, for a photo shoot. We did a fundraiser that he helped us put together. We have an eBay store online that he helped with one week. He helped Ken in the HR Department,” she said.

“He and I repaired a leaking water faucet,” Stansbury added.

While Clayton’s internship was relevant to his field of study, Bianca plans to go into pre-med genetics. Lewis says the goal for their program is not to necessarily prep students to work

at their company but to prepare them for the workforce in general so they can be successful no matter where they end up.

Logan Mesenbrink, who’s in charge of sales at LANE Trailer Mfg. Co., says their program started out similarly. The Boone Community School District reached out to LANE in 2020 to partner as a way for the students to try out different careers. Now, nearly 50% of their workforce started out as interns (13 or 14 of their 30 employees, Mesenbrink says).

“We've filled welders. We filled painters. We filled assemblers. We have filled service tech roles, and we have filled rafters,” Mesenbrink said. “It's funny, because I was the youngest guy, for, like my whole life. Now, I'm in the upper part of the group, and I'm not even 30. There was no one my age group in welding. Now, a lot of these young kids are getting into it. There's not a lot in the middle and then you've got the older guys who are retiring so it's been great getting the younger generation into it.”

LANE Trailer interns participated in the 2024 Iowa State Fair and took home the purple ribbon. They built a trailer from the ground up. Photo submitted by LANE.

Piedmont also likes hiring their interns. Whitescarver explains that the interns learn the ins and outs of the business and its products before they start teaching sales strategy. The nine-week program builds a solid foundation for the interns to then become employees and hit the ground running.

"We can't teach them something to sell that they don't know, so nine weeks prepping that knowledge and then it's time to level up and make you a professional salesperson,” Whitescarver said.

“It's really about just helping to get the next generation in to the performance plastics industry and get them familiar with our business. So then they are starting in those inside sales roles and working their way up,” Woodard said.

Mesenbrink says LANE takes pride in investing in future generations and at the same time they’re supporting their community. LANE has four recent new hires from the internship program. Bram Carpenter is a service tech. Owen Wildt, Colby Miller, and Braxton Hanson are welders.

All three say they had little to no welding experience before starting the internship. Besides learning to weld, they also learned a lot about the industry.

“When you hear of going into trades, you hear people are less willing to help you try to learn stuff, but everything I've learned I've had lots of help with,” Colby said. “Everyone's always been nice about it.”

“I thought that when I first started a welding job you’d only have two weeks to train, and that was all you got, but I'm still learning new stuff today,” Owen added.

Employing students can help your current employees. Research shows that training new employees and sharing their knowledge helps current workers take pride in their jobs and feel valued.

Whether you’re looking to hire or just want to give students in your community a place to learn what being in the workforce is like, implementing an internship program is a rewarding place to start. ■

Reimagining Cold Storage: Introducing Mobile Refrigeration Solutions to North America

Refrigerated trailers have long been established globally, particularly in Europe where they seamlessly integrate into daily operations and serve as practical alternatives to conventional reefers, box trucks, and upfitted vans. However, the adoption of this technology in the U.S. has been gradual and measured. This can be attributed in part to differing lifestyles — Europeans frequent grocery stores more often, whereas Americans tend to buy in bulk. Spatial disparities also contribute; Europeans are accustomed to more confined living and workspaces, necessitating more compact refrigerated solutions. Nevertheless, access to this advanced technology shouldn't remain limited to one continent. In response, the creators of industry’s leading walkin cold storage solution, Polar King, introduced Polar King Mobile (PKM) in 2020, striving to bridge this divide and make refrigerated trailer solutions more accessible domestically.

Polar King Mobile today stands as a pioneering force in North America, bringing cost-effective mobile refrigerated solutions to the market. The company's exclusive dedication revolves around crafting refrigerated trailers

designed to address a broad spectrum of established and evolving requirements. Given that this technology is still in its infancy within the U.S., the true potential of its applications is unfolding as accessibility expands.

Polar King Mobile customers often share a common sentiment: "I never truly grasped the value of a refrigerated trailer until I made the investment. Now, my business would struggle to operate without it." Let's delve into the intricacies to better understand the underlying factors.

What is a Polar King Mobile Trailer?

Just like the ground-resting walk-in units produced by Polar King and Polar Leasing Company, the freezer and cooler trailers from Polar King Mobile boast a seamless

Continued on Page 78

Continued from Page 77

fiberglass construction. These trailers are offered in three standard dimensions: 6’x8’, 6’x12’, and 6’x16’ and provide a temperature range spanning from 0°F to 50°F. Most notably, all PKM trailers come with validated credentials, offering customers an extra layer of reassurance.

Easily connecting to the standard 110V and 15 amps outlets prevalent in North America, these compact units operate on an all-electric system. Each trailer, which is NSF listed, showcases a set of impressive features, including a sturdy 54-inch reinforced door, robust fourinch walls, a pallet-duty floor, and an interior coated with antimicrobial gel coating for greater hygiene.

The crucial cooling function is attributed to the GOVI arktik 2000US series refrigeration unit, known for its ability to maintain temperatures within the range of 0°F to 50°F to support optimal storage conditions.

All Polar King Mobile trailers are manufactured and built in accordance with the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) compliance standards, which reiterates the trailers are designed with safety and performance in mind. They are also ISO certified for the highest quality, health and environmental standards.

PKM Features and Benefits

PKM is redefining mobility in the realm of refrigeration and freezer storage. With an all-electric design, these units can be effortlessly towed by virtually any vehicle equipped with a hitch. The units really put the “Mobile” in Polar King Mobile, as they’re designed to be pulled behind a standard pickup truck, and all are rated at or under 10,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight (GVW) – so no CDL necessary. Stellar Makes Investments in Future Workforce

Practical work experience plays a vital role in adequately preparing young talent and the future workforce for fulfilling careers. That’s the driving force behind Stellar's investment in developing the next generation to join the workforce. The next generation will bring a new level of innovation and fresh ideas that will improve processes, enhance efficiency and contribute to overall industry growth.

Exclusive Experience

Stellar strives to provide internship opportunities for a variety of professions but is especially dedicated to helping develop future engineers. The Stellar Engineering Experience Program offers an invaluable opportunity to explore a career within the engineering field with a top employer in Iowa. Through Stellar’s Engineering Experience Program, students working toward a degree in engineering, industrial technology, or related fields are responsible for completing projects and daily tasks associated with their field of interest. The experience allows students to put classroom learning into action.

“Stellar has given me such a great opportunity to grow my

skills and learn more about engineering from professionals in the field. I am excited to see how my projects turn out and hope they help production function more efficiently and safely,” said Jordan Clabaugh, aerospace engineering student and program participant.

By engaging future engineers in applicable activities like computer-aided design (CAD) modeling, CAD drawings, electrical diagrams and additive manufacturing, they gain hands-on experience within the working environment of an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) company.

Gaining real-world, hands-on experience can help program participants choose an area of focus within the engineering field. Four tracks are tailored to different engineering distinctions: Design, Manufacturing, Electrical and Quality.

› Design Engineering track: Focuses on improving products through CAD modeling, research and development.

› Manufacturing Engineering track: Provides hands-on knowledge in shop floor documentation, tooling and parts flow.

› Electrical Engineering track: Supports new product development through hardware and software design.

› Quality Engineering track: Ensures the highest standard of safety and quality are met in parts production.

The program lasts 12 weeks, typically during the summer months. To emulate a career experience, program participants earn competitive compensation and are eligible for attractive benefits that may include relocation assistance, mentorship, training, social activities and volunteer opportunities.

Programs like Stellar’s Engineering Experience Program, and internships in general, don’t just bolster the future workforce. They also help build company morale, allowing current employees to mentor future colleagues and model the company culture.

“I enjoy interning for Stellar because it doesn’t feel like a job, it feels like a community,” says Matt Steffenmeier, program participant with a double major in engineering and physics.

Funding Future Innovation

Another way Stellar invests in the future workforce is through partnerships with local educational programs that are dedicated to helping students gain in-demand technology and skilled trades learning. Because students need access to technology and tools to learn how to perform tasks, Stellar recently donated a UR10 collaborative robot, also known as a cobot, to the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Industrial Automation and Robotics Technology (IART) program.

Technology like this donation makes it possible for students in robotics classes to keep up with the evolving landscape in automation and robotics coding. With the addition of the UR10 cobot, expanded course selections and educational opportunities are available to more students.

Stellar also donated a state-of-the-art hooklift, service body and container to the NIACC John V. Hanson Career Center that exposes high school students to various career paths within skilled trades. By prioritizing education through technology, Stellar is ensuring the next generation has the proper preparation for successful, rewarding careers in the manufacturing world.

New Ideas Lead to Innovation

Involvement with advisory boards including NIACC ‘s IART and The Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS) at Iowa State University provides not only enhanced educational opportunities for students but also a channel for Iowa companies, like Stellar, to hire highly qualified graduates for careers in engineering, skilled trades and more.

Partnering with programs like CIRAS can offer companies a fresh perspective on day-to-day operations as well as products, projects, policies and even meeting practices. Companies may also benefit from the latest strategies, techniques and skill sets that are currently emerging in fields of study and can be applied within the organization. A well-known example of this was the adoption of social media as a marketing tool, a strategy introduced as the tech-savvy millennial generation began entering the workplace and is now commonplace.

Introduction to Opportunities

Early introduction can help gain early interest and involvement in the manufacturing industry from young people. Stellar hosts grade school students and educates high school students on the various opportunities that exist as they begin to explore postsecondary education and future career options. By providing tours of its facility, Stellar ensures that young people learn about the many different and wonderful careers available in manufacturing.

Once young people have seen manufacturing through facility

tours, continuing the conversation is also essential. Through community activities, job fairs and training events, Stellar continues to boost its visibility through hands-on equipment interaction, and establishing itself as an employer of choice. By the time these young people are ready to make a career choice, they are familiar with their local options and what they can offer.

Investing in the Future

When it comes to ensuring the next generation of the workforce is prepared and interested in a career in manufacturing, early introduction and regular community involvement are key. Stellar views investments in the community and in young people as a valuable partnership that will allow the company to thrive well into the future.

“Preparing the next generation for a career in manufacturing leads to the fulfillment of in-demand careers with experienced, highly trained individuals,” says Dave Zrostlik, President of Stellar Industries. “Stellar is committed to making those opportunities possible by investing in the development of the future workforce.”

For more information on the investments Stellar has made and ways for young professionals to get involved, visit www.stellarindustries.com.

Stellar was founded in 1990 in Garner, Iowa, and has since expanded operations to multiple U.S. locations. Stellar is a 100% employee-owned and -operated manufacturer of high-quality work trucks and trailers, in addition to service truck and van accessories. Through the innovative, growing product line and an expanding distribution network, the company has gained an international presence and become the No. 1 productivity choice in many markets. ■

Featherlite Builds Custom CNA Mobile Lab for Technical College

As many National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) Members know, servicing rural communities requires unique solutions. This proved true when Northcentral Technical College (NTC) needed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certified classroom.

NTC services a 10-county area which includes several rural high schools in and around Wausau, Wisconsin. The school applied for and was awarded a grant to build a mobile classroom. NTC Associate Vice President of Facilities Management Robert Elliott says they decided a trailer would fit the bill for what they needed.

“We wrote in the grant that we were going to do a mobile lab so that we can go to different communities, because to set up a CNA lab in each community is costly. You have to have a place to do it. It has to be approved and certified to do CNA training, and we just didn't have those facilities in the rural communities,” Elliott said. “The goal was to develop a trailer that would be able to bring CNA training in a certified lab to each one of those rural communities and be able to provide that training to high school students.”

The Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Core Industry Grant allowed NTC to equip the trailer with body simulation manikins, patient care models, hospital beds, and other instructional supplies. The trailer holds two hospital beds with the capacity for eight students and an instructor.

To be able to operate as a mobile lab, the trailer had to

have water, electricity, heating and air conditioning. Featherlite Trailer Manufacturing was awarded the bid to make the trailer, and they were up for the challenge.

Featherlite Specialty Sales Manager Mark Ackley says this isn’t the company’s first trailer like this but there are always unique features with each one. NTC is located just under 200 miles due east of Minneapolis, Minnesota, so the weather was something that has to be heeded.

“That was one of my concerns, when and what times of the year is this thing going to be operated,” Ackley said. “Well, it turns out it's going to be operated year-round. Well, yearround in Wisconsin poses some challenges for plumbing, both inside and outside of the trailer. We had some heat and air conditioning problems that we had to resolve, but through heaters underneath the tanks, and inside, like heated mats on those tanks, we overcame that as well.”

Ackley has been with Featherlite for 28 years now, with 11 of them spent on the shop floor. He says understanding the manufacturing process has been helpful when building custom specialty trailers like the classroom for NTC.

“There are trailers that don't need the heating because they're

running around the South in the wintertime, so there are locations that just never require heat. Most of them will require some form of cooling, but that requirement changes greatly depending upon the environment that it's going to be operating in. But it’s not something we haven't done or can’t do,” Ackley said. “Again, back to where is it going to be operated? How many people are in there? What kind of equipment's in there? You really need to take all of that stuff into account, because you're still in a trailer. You don't have a wall with all the insulation in it. It's much different.”

Another special challenge in building a trailer that operates as an extension of a school is complying with all the school requirements too.

“Part of our college standards is that all of our spaces are ADA accessible,” said Mason Heldt, the learning manager for the School of Health and Community Services. “It has a ramp in the back with double doors, so that all of our students can access the lab no matter what accommodations they may need.”

This classroom is accessible and equipped to be fully operational without any hookups. While they try to hook up to water, power, and internet at each location as much as possible, the trailer is equipped with a water tank, generator, and its own internet.

“We're trying to set our sites up, so that when we go there, we can plug in and hook up with the permanent water and electricity at each one of those sites,” Ackley said. “We just ran our last class where we were able to get water

but not power. We ran off the generator and used their water to host that site. Each one is a little bit different.”

Building a custom trailer from the ground up can be a lengthy process with bumps in the road. Experienced specialty manufacturers like Featherlite know how to adapt and deliver.

"In general it's not a lengthy process and with Featherlite’s experience having done such a wide variety of products over the years, it certainly takes us less time, I believe, than most people, just because we have that broad experience," Ackley said. “When we manufacture, we manufacture that trailer from the axles up. We have the most flexibility of anybody. We don't just build semis. We don't just build bumper pull trailers, and we don't just build goose neck trailers. We do it all. I think that's that helps us shorten that design time because we have that experience and make it easy to share previous projects with folks to help guide them.”

“I just say, my compliments to Featherlite, because in the process of doing this, they realized that we need to upsize the trailer and then there's a couple of other things in there that really were added at no cost to the college,” Elliot said. “So, when they took on a different model trailer that did not cost the college any money to do that. Kudos to the good working relationship we had with Featherlite through that process.”

The mobile classroom has been making its rounds since April with dozens of rural Wisconsin high school students becoming CNA certified in the back of a Featherlite trailer.

Stellar’s modified A-frame stabilizer design combines the stability of traditional A-frame stabilizers with the flexibility of out-and-down style outriggers. Dual cylinders and modified geometry provide enhanced stability at various widths, ensuring optimal performance on uneven terrain.

The TM16160/28000 features a highly versatile tire manipulator with +80° to -24° of articulation and 315° rotation. Continuous rotating pads and a clamping width of 158" allow it to handle tire and rim combinations up to 16,500 lbs, while its unique parallelogram design accommodates tires as small as 40".
