Link+ is finally here! When our new online catalog launched in March, our resource sharing with other libraries wasn’t as robust as you, or we, were used to. Link+ connects us to 50 Bay Area and Nevada libraries to help you find all the millions of subjects you want to learn more about. Remodel in Napa! We’ve just begun a 9+ month project renovating our Friends workspace, Circulation and our Children’s room – complete with a bump of the building to make sure there’s plenty of room for our youngest visitors. When this project is completed in the spring of 2017, all 4 of our locations will either be completely new or completely remodeled in the last 7 years. Quite an accomplishment and a testament to how well supported our libraries are. Don’t worry – those programs you love won’t be going away during the remodel. We’re bringing them out of the rooms and into the building. You may just find a few new gems to read while listening or watching a speaker or performer. NVUSD Middle & High Schoolers all get library cards. This year all middle school and high school students automatically get library cards- their student ID is their card number. A partnership with the Napa Valley Unified School District helped make this happen. We’re really excited about this and believe it ensures that the many thousands of students have instant access to all our online and in person resources for research or leisure. Parents could opt out of this service when filling out their new school year packet. Pope Valley gets a Library Station. While they’re 45 minutes away from one of our other locations, Pope Valley residents can now get library cards and check out materials at their elementary school. They can also place holds and have them delivered to this more convenient location. Napa location now has a media box to make DVDs and video games available to our users 24/7. Think of it as a RedBox™, but you use your library card instead of your credit card to get access to the newest DVDs and our video game collection. You can check out and return directly in the box anytime, day or night.

North Napa Rotary Supports Third Week Book Reading Initiative

Local Rotary organization provides grant support for early literacy project at the Napa County Library

A

s many of you know, 2016 was a year of celebrations and new beginnings for the Napa County Library. The start of new life is the perfect time to nurture a child’s love of reading. Developing early literacy skills positively impacts a child’s reading achievement and success in school. We believe that it’s never too early to help with your child’s development of pre-reading skills. According to Ann Davis, Children’s Librarian at the Napa Main Library, “We wanted to start teaching parents about the importance and ease of sharing books earlier you start reading to your child, the better. ” The importance of early literacy is undeniable - Reading aloud and talking

with your infant increases brain development and encourages speaking skills. It’s also a wonderful time for new parents to bond with babies. With this in mind, the North Napa Rotary has purchased Third Week board books for the Napa County Library to give to new parents. These books are being distributed at every baby’s one month Napa and through Napa County’s Public Health Services. Third Week Books are available in both English and Spanish (with rhymes on one side of the page and reading tips on the other) and focus on the importance of reading to babies. “North Napa Rotary has partnered with the Napa County Library through Rotary District 5130 Grants to promote literacy.

Our shared goal with the library is to strengthen the capacity of our community to support basic education and literacy, and to increase literacy from newborns to adults,” explains proactive Rotary member, Al Verstuyft. This program, along with the North Napa Rotary’s previous donations, contributes to the Library’s Every Child Ready To Read effort. Every Child Ready to Read is a parent education initiative that stresses the idea that early literacy begins with the primary adults in a child’s life.
