WINTER 2016 December January February
Literacy Center Hosts Open House
recurring CHILDRENS PROGRams
Literacy Center Open House is December 12 - 17 and starts at 10 a.m. Join us for cider and other goodies and learn about the literacy program.
Winter Session September 13 December 8
Adult literacy can change everything. Health. Gender equality. Poverty. Every important social issue is impacted by low literacy. When individuals learn how to read, write, do basic math, and use computers, they have the power to lift themselves out of poverty, lower health care costs, find and keep sustainable employment, and ultimately change their lives.
72 43
Children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves. These children are more likely to get poor grades, display behavioral problems, have high absentee rates, repeat school years, or drop out.
Of adults with the lowest literacy levels, 43 percent live in poverty, and 70% of adult welfare recipients have low literacy levels. There is a clear correlation between more education and higher earnings, and between higher educational scores and higher earnings.
Wild Napa: Lamprey
Every year, one in six young adults—more than 1.2 million—drop out of high school. Recent data show that nearly 30 percent of adults with household incomes at or below the federal poverty line do not have a high school credential. The key to financial success is a viable career path and adequate education to seek meaningful, family-supporting wages.

Wednesday, December 14 at 7 p.m. at the Napa Main Library
Every Wednesday from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Napa Main and Calistoga Libraries
Get to know the oldest and most misunderstood fish in North America – lampreys. Dr. Stewart Reid will explore the biology, diversity, and conservation of these fascinating fish. We’ll learn how lampreys start out as eyelash-sized larva, serve as earthworms in our streams to then journey out to sea where they ride fish and whales along the coast, until they find a river to spawn and die in. Learn how they are doing, what their challenges are, and what can we do to help them survive.
Practice English or Spanish and help other learners in a friendly atmosphere. Participants speak half the time in English and half in Spanish. Beginners welcome.
