Road rage incident - traffic department inside now searching for taxi driver on the run Dona-

tions for fire victims

Floris Steenkamp Walvis Bay's municipal traffic department confirmed yesterday it is trying to locate a taxi driver for questioning, after his alleged aggressive and reckless behaviour on 30 June this year during a suspected incident of criminal road rage. The taxi driver's arrogance and aggression can lead to a series of c r i m i n a l c h a rg e s which may have every road user think twice before embarking on acts of road rage in future. The taxi driver, pictured on the front page, allegedly skipped a stop street on the th intersection of 9 th Road and 6 Street on 30 June this year, almost causing a collision with another vehicle that had right of way. The vehicle that had right of way was occupied by a female driver and she blew the vehicle's horn to warn the taxi driver of the impending collision. Instead the taxi driver allegedly slammed on his vehicle's brakes, almost causing a second collision with the same vehicle on the lane of oncoming cars. When the female driver again honked, as this was now the second near traffic collision in seconds, the taxi driver got out of his vehicle, leaving it on the intersection with approaching vehicles.

An altercation ensued in which the female driver locked her vehicle’s doors as the taxi driver was clearly aggressive and was trying to open one of her car doors. When he could not succeed in doing that, he was searching for an object to break one of the female driver's car windows. He also made threatening gestures and abused the lady verbally. In those moments the female driver sped off, resulting in the taxi driver getting back into his vehicle and follow her in hot pursuit through 6th Street, 12th Road and in Sam Nujoma Avenue. In a desperate attempt to shake off the taxi driver, the woman pulled into the drivethrough area of a chicken fast food outlet, but when this also did not work she drove for the Walvis Bay Police Station. The taxi driver stopped next to her car and then made a gesture with his finger over his throat, gesturing he would kill her. The municipal traffic chief, Superintendent Eben Platt yesterday confirmed the female

driver reported the matter and made a sworn statement. Since traffic officials are on the lookout for the taxi and the driver with the objective of bringing him to the book for a traffic offence (skipping the stop sign), reckless negligent driving after the chase through Walvis Bay's streets and also a criminal charge for assault by threat. “We cannot tolerate such behaviour on our streets and roads. This is dangerous conduct which could lead to serious road accidents,” Platt explained yesterday. Adding it would be advisable for the taxi driver to come forward so the matter can be resolved. Platt warned against aggressive driving behaviour and road rage and called upon the drivers to respect traffic laws and to be tolerant towards other drivers. “There is no place on our streets for arrogance, ignorance and lawlessness”, a second traffic official tasked with searching for the taxi driver said. He too called for the driver to come forward.

The moment has finally arrived. The new terminal building at the Walvis Bay International Airport will be inaugurated on Friday afternoon by Namibia’s Head of State Dr Hage Geingob. The upgrade of the Walvis Bay airport to international status and super jumbo standard has not come on a plate. The project took well over a decade to complete and the completion of the terminal building is the last diamond to complete the crown. Walvis Bay International Airport is Namibia’s second international airport, after Hosea Kutako International Airport at Windhoek. Future projections indicate as many as one million passengers will be handled at the airport annually. The Walvis Bay International Airport is officially now an all weather, all day international air facility with state of the art amenities and services to ensure passengers comfort, speedy service and safety.
