Their dream of an economically united continent is now taking shape throughAgenda 2063, with the AfCFTA as one of its flagship initiatives. Namibia's own journey began with signing the agreement in July 2018, followed by ratification and the formal submission of its tariff offer The Minister described the launch as a clarion call to action for both policymakers, businesses, entrepreneurs, andyounginnovatorsacross Namibia. “With over 1.4 billion potential customersacrossAfrica, thisisourmoment to diversify exports, add value locally, and build stronger industries,” AshipalaMusavyi said. “The Government has laid thefoundation, nowtheprivatesectormust take ownership ” Namport CEO Mr Andrew Kanime, who also addressed the gathering, echoedthiscallforcollaboration andregionalambition.“Portsaremorethan concrete and cranes, they are gateways to opportunity,” he said “Africa's true potential lies not in trading with the world, butwithitself.” Kanimestressedthatintra-Africatradestill lags far behind that of other regions, accounting for only 16% of total trade compared to 70% within the European Union. He noted that Namibia's ports are
now fully positioned to support this transformation, with upgrades already completed, including the deepening of the Walvis Bay channel to accommodate larger vessels and expanded shipping links across West Africa through MSC's transshipment designation. “The Port of Walvis Bay is Namibia's lifeline,” Kanimesaid.
“It's a strategic continental asset.” The first consignment exported under the AfCFTA framework is salt produced by Walvis Bay Salt Holdings, destined for a fellow African market, a symbolic but powerful start to what is expected to becomeagrowinglistofNamibiangoods moving across borders with fewer tariffs and stronger partnerships. Municipality “Disrespects” Build Together Group

Following an official petition which was handed over to the Swakopmund municipality on 16 June 2025 by disgruntled residents, the municipality allegedly responded on the petition with copy of a handwritten letter without any official stamporsignature.
The petition contains questions and concerns regarding alleged irregularities involvingtheBuildTogetherProgram.
“This rude and demeaning act by the Swakopmund municipality indicates that the municipality is not taking us as concerned residentsseriously, andit'sadirectgesture of disrespect,” said the spokesperson of the group, Mr Teofilus “Chico” Abisai. Namib Times recently reported on residentsfromtheMondesaandDRCsuburbs who aired their discontent regarding alleged corruption and favouritism occurring intheBuildTogetherHousingProgramme procedures at the Swakopmund municipality The petition which was hand- delivered to the office of the Swakopmund municipality's chief executive officer, Mr Alfeus Benjamin, requested for answers on(amongothers)whybeneficiariesofthe Build Together Housing Program were divided into different groups by the Swakopmund municipality It also requested from the municipality to explain why the constructionofsomeBuildTogetherbeneficiaries'housesarenotcompletedyet, asa presumed shortage of funds.“Where did the money go?” the discontent group wantstoknow Oneoftheirmainconcerns
is the fact that some residents whose names are on the master waiting list, are waiting for approval since far back as 2002. Alleged name-shifting and adding of names of people who are appa-rently not even residing in Swakopmund on the waiting list is also a main concern, as per the residents. In response to the pe-tition, a hand-written letter (in Namib Times' possession) in a white Swakop-mund municipality envelope was provi-ded to the group. The response, which shows no official stamp, nor indication on who wrote it however contains more counter questions than answers. Namib Times also saw the petition letter and although the questions and concerns raised in the contentarenotclearlystated, themessage is very clear “It seems like the Swakopmund municipality opted to 'not understand' the questions, prompting their response,” is Abisai's point of view “How can we build a nation and town when the leaders are not communicating respectfully with residents and when there is no transparency,”heasked.
Questions regarding the concerns of the Build Together group were sent via email tothemunicipalityon16June.Untildate, noresponsewasreceived.
