The Directorate of Social Welfare Services (DSWS) under the Mini-stry of Health and Social Services (MOHSS) will be carrying out a National study on the prevalence of and interventions in relation to suicides in Namibia. The study is to be conducted this month still. The health ministry explained to namib times the main objectives of this study is to collect data on the prevalence, causes and precipitating factors towards suicide and to use such data to inform policies and programmes to prevent and mitigate the health, psycho-social and socio-economic impact of suicide. Suicide is a national tragedy that has a devastating impact on individuals, families and communities. People from all walks of life are being affected by attempted, as well as the completed suicide of family members and friends. While the causes and precipitating factors for every individual suicide are likely to be different, there may well be some commonalities and triggers that need to be identified in order to design interventions to reduce and prevent suicide. The survey will be conducted in all fourteen regions of Namibia. Field work started on 15 June and will end on 5 July this year. A final report with recommendations will be compiled for nationwide implementation. The Ministry of Health and Social Services hereby urge the entire nation to support this very important study and request everyone to collaborate with the research teams. The survey team members will be wearing yellow t-shirts with the Ministry of Health and Social Service logos and yellow caps. The team will also have identification cards to identify themselves. The Schedule for the survey: 15 – 21 June Swakopmund suburbs, from 22- 27 June Walvis Bay suburbs, 28-29 June Arandis, 1 July Omaruru and on 2 – 5 July Daures Constituency. Survey personnel will have proper identification.
