Namibia ready for first Lithium export First export of 30 000 tons of Lithium to China via the port of Walvis Bay takes place within a month

inside Mayor’s Corner

Mining history is in the making for Namibia with the first consignment of 30 000 tons of Lithium due for export to China through the port of Walvis Bay. The first export consignment is due within a month and thereafter Lithium exports will take place every six months, the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) confirmed in a statement yesterday. Page 5

Mr Immanuel !Hanabeb, Namport's Executive: Commercial yesterday said Namport is proud to be associated with this project and the long-term benefits it will bring to the Namibian economy. Adding the export of Lithium is another step closer to the reality of Walvis Bay and the port becoming a logistics hub”. In the statement yesterday Namport said further: “The Namibian Ports

40 000 tons of ce- Days over for quick ment clinker off- and easy profits in loaded in the port the fishing industry of Walvis Bay A total of 40 000 tons of bagged cement clinker is currently offloaded from the bulk cargo ship Magnum Power in the port of Walvis Bay. The clinker is destined for Cheetah Cement at Otjiwarongo, Namport confirmed yesterday in a statement. Cement clinker is the key ingredient in the manufacturing of Portland cement. It is ground to a fine powder and used as the binder agent in many cement products. The clinker was imported from China and it will

require twenty days and seventy truck loads to deliver the last clinker to Cheetah Cement. Said Namport's Executive: Commercial, Mr Immanuel !Hanabeb: “This proves once again the logistical extent Namport can cater to clients with consignments which

require a longer period of offloading and minimal storage at the Port of Walvis Bay. We assist clients to find workable solutions for the benefit of our clients and maintain throughput capacity at our Ports during these economic times.”

Fisheries Minister Bernhardt Esau reconfirmed his intentions yesterday to implement the so-called Scorecard system, by which the performance of fishing right holders will be measured in terms of re-investing profits in the development of Namibia's fishing industry and creating sustainable jobs. The Minister made these remarks at the launch ceremony of Ehanga Fishing's newly refurbished fishing vessel, Ehanga Bay (see pictures on page 3). "Right holders should not expect the automatic allocation of fishing quotas just because they have a right. If you score zero on investment you will not receive fish quotas associated with that

criteria", the Minister warned. Adding the days are long gone whereby fishing quotas are simply sold off to other operators in the fishing industry for a quick profit. Many beneficiaries never re-invested part of these profits and also never took a business risk upon themselves in the fishing industry. The same goes for job creation. The Minister

explained job creation is one of the pillars of the fishing industry. He urged the industry to balance the number of jobs and the quality of jobs against every metric ton of fishing quotas allocated. The Minister is expected to continue on this topic today when he addresses the fishing industry in his Annual Address to the Fishing Industry in Walvis Bay.

Authority will be facilitating the exportation of Lithium concentrate to China within the next month. An estimated amount of 30,000 tonnes of Lithium concentrate will be exported every 6 weeks to Mainland China”. Some 42 % of Lithium concentrate is used in the manufacturing of batteries. The overall market today is 200,000 tons per annum and estimates are the market demand would grow to 800,000 tons per annum by 2025. The growth in battery manufacturing globally is the main driving factor behind the increase in demand for Lithium. The main Lithium producers globally are located in Western Australia and South America and much of this ends up in China for further processing into battery grade Lithium chemicals.”

According to Priscilla Uatoo Kavita, Chairperson of the Erongo House of Safety, the house closed as the establishment did not meet the required standards The premises was designed and constructed in an apartment-style. This increasingly made supervision of the children complicated for the housemother. Kavita confirmed the EDF is in the process of selling the house with the aim of using the proceeds to construct three houses [each with its own housemother] on land already acquired adjacent to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tamariskia. These new premises will be in line with the standards set by the Government for such

an institution as the EHS. According to Mr. Asser Kapere, the Chairman of the Erongo Development Foundation, the process is in motion to find a buyer. He explained at the new premises three houses will be constructed and for each there would be a housemother. Miss Vicky Tjandero, housemother of Erongo House of Safety, and staff were relieved from duty. ·the House of Safety takes into care children referred/sent to them by the courts. It is mostly in the events of domestic violence or where children are orphaned with nowhere to go. The House of Safety takes full responsibility for the children up to the age of eighteen.

"I cannot disclose the number of children we served over the years. What we can proudly say is we have supported many children who later in life became successful adults. At one time we had twenty children in our care", explained Kavita. There were times when the challenges were abnormal, she recalls. "One of the greatest challenges we were faced with was when we received newborn twins. They stayed with us for three days and then the parents came and begged us to have their children back. It was not easy for us. The Erongo House of Safety's premise on Vrede Rede Street in Tamariskia, is now up for sale.

Collision – three people injured Three people were injured in a collision between two vehicles around mid-day on Tuesday at the crossing of Hage Geingob Street and 9th Road. It appears the driver of a white Volkswagen sedan, with an Okahandja registration mark, ignored the stop sign and a vehicle coming down 9th Road [incidentally also a Volkswagen) were then involved in a side impact collision with this vehicle. Both the driver and passenger of the white sedan sustained injuries which required hospitalisation whilst the driver of the other vehicle was only slightly injured.

Man sets himself alight next to B2 coastal road – dies of burn injuries A motorist on the B2 coastal road was met with a horrific scene last Friday, when he discovered a man some sixty meters from the road in a gravely injured state from burn wounds all over his body. The man later died of these burn injuries and it is believed he committed suicide by setting himself alight. The deceased was identified this week as Alex Salom (39). He set himself alight at around 19:00 and only hours earlier contacted his wife and said she must take care of their baby. The incident occurred some three kilometres of Walvis Bay's town entrance. The person who discovered Salom explained to the Police he spotted someone on one of the nearby dunes and it appeared this person was waving for help. He stopped his vehicle and walked to the man and then saw Salom lying there and he was burnt all over his body. An ambulance was summonsed who took Salom to hospital. He was transferred to a Windhoek hospital where he died on Saturday of his injuries.

For the first time in 41 years of Rössing Uranium’s operations, a female professional has been appointed as General Manager:

The death occurred on Sunday of Mr. Richard Schumacher (50), perhaps best known for the major role he played over many years at the Sea Rescue Institute of Namibia Walvis Bay

Liezl Davies is holding the position since 1 February. This was announced by Managing Director Werner Duvenhage. Davies took over the position from Martin Tjipita who will be leaving Rössing to take up a senior executive role in the Namibian operations of an international company involved in the resources sector.

Former colleagues of the late Schumacher at the S.R.I.N. yesterday described him as a very dedicated member of the sea rescue fraternity, an easy person to work with and an able and dependable colleague at sea. According to a close relative Mr Schumacher complained on Saturday of not feeling well. On Sunday morning his wife rushed him from their home at Henties Bay to the Medi-Clinic Cottage Hospital in Swakopmund where he was admitted to the intensive care ward. He sadly passed away within twenty minutes after being admitted.

The Chinese New Year is not on the exact Gregorian calendar date every year, as it is determined by the cycles of the moon. It can vary between 16 and 28 February of every

Gregorian calendar year. In modern China it is known as the Spring Festival and it is an important custom for Chinese people in their home country, and also abroad, to

return to their roots and travel to their parental homes during this period. Every Chinese New Year year is represented by zodiac animals as birth symbol. 2018 is the Year of the Dog.

Other zodiac animals symbolising Chinese lunar years are the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat, the donkey, the rooster and the pig.

Minister Esau addresses the fishing industry this morning The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Bernhardt Esau is on a busy schedule at the coast. His visit concludes this morning with his annual address to the fishing industry at Walvis Bay. Minister Esau reportedly also addressed personnel of the Ministry during his visit where he among others urged government officials of his ministry to cut unnecessary expenditure, as the Fisheries ministry like all other Government departments are battling shortage of funding. These savings include cutting overtime and adopting best practises like using email for official commu-

nications, as opposed to producing loads of documentation printed on paper. Telephone cost also came under scrutiny and for government officials working for the Ministry to be more productive and deliver better service to the public. Minister Esau was also the guest of honour yesterday morning at the launching ceremony of Ehanga Fishing's fishing vessel "Ehanga Bay".

Gladiators work on fitness for African Nations Cup qualifiers In their quest to qualify for the 2018 Confederation of African Football (CAF) African Women Cup of Nations, the Brave Gladiators started with their qualifiers training camp in earnest this week with much emphasis on fitness with Zimbabwe to come to town on 31 March. The Brave Gladiators whose only participation at the continental women football showpiece was in 2014 when they hosted it and exited at the group stage, failed to qualify for the 2016 edition in Cameroon and will now embark upon qualification to Ghana, 17 November to 1 December 2018. General Manager of Women Football Jacqui Shipanga released a training squad of 29 players on Tuesday and states that the camp will have intense fitness session to get the ladies in shape.

"The ladies haven't played competitive football for about five months now since playing in Cosafa Cup in Zimbabwe and our fitness levels will be key during this camp ahead of the Zimbabwean ladies visit end of next month", Shipanga says. Therefore, Namibia Football Association (NFA) Fitness coach Charl Botha, who has worked wonders with the Brave Warriors in their qualification and participation at the 2018 African Nations Championship(CHAN) finals in Morocco, will be in charge from Wednesday

with head coach Brian Isaacs overall in charge. The team includes USA-based Annouscka Kordom who plays for Corban Warriors and Zenatha Coleman of Real Zaragoza in Spanish Women Football League as well as Veuet-jiua Kotjipati who plies her trade for German side Herforder Sport-verein, while the rest of the team consist of localbased players. The 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers' first round first leg match between the Gladiators and Zimbabwe will take place on Saturday 31 March, 16h00 at the Sam Nujoma stadium with the second leg to be played on 07 April in Zimbabwe. and the eventual winner books their tickets for the finals. SFC and SKW win opening tournament

Yoke-skey National teams off to South Africa Several Namibian Yoke-skey (Jukskei) national teams will be traveling to South Africa to participate in the 2018 South African Senior Yoke-skey Championships, from 31st March to 5th April in Kroonstad. The players that will be traveling are:

SFC's Conrad Johannes seen in action at the Bank Windhoek Fistball League's opening tournament in Swakopmund.

Media Release The Bank Windhoek Fistball League season opening tournament took place over the weekend at the Swakopmund Fussball Club (SFC) in Swakopmund. Sport Klub Windhoek's first team (SKW1) secured the Category A title while the host team, (SFC), walked away with the Category B trophy. Eight teams participated in the tournament and competed against each other in two rounds with duration of 15 minutes per match. In Group A, SKW 1 was the first team to triumph. SKW 2 defeated their opponents Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) 4 and SFC and secured the second spot. A youthful team of CFC 4 tried its best during the group stages but unfortunately remained without a victory at the end of the day. SFC secured the third place. In Group B, defending champions CFC 1 dominated and had no problems defeating CFC 2, CFC 3 and DTS. The encounter between CFC 2 and CFC 3 was close but CFC 2 was able to leave the field with a wafer-thin 1point lead. In the Category A semi-finals, SKW 1 battled it out with CFC 2. Although SKW 1 had the game under control, it was a close calltowards the end. Nevertheless, the Green and Whites advanced into the final with a three-point victory. CFC 1 and SKW 2 faced each other in the second semi-final. SKW 2 looked prepared, started off better and made their opponents pay for their mistakes during the game. In the second half CFC 1 reduced their mistakes and scored continuously. CFC 1's hard work paid off as they eventually won the encounter with six points.

The final saw the two opponents SKW 1 and CFC 1 dual it out. Cohen 1 had difficulties from the serve against the strong defence of SKW 1. In the second half,CFC 1 found gaps to score but SKW 1 never allowed their rivals to gain the lead and finally won with three points. The teams that were placed third and fourth after the preliminary round played a semi-final for the Category B Cup. DTS, who played against SFC, had a good chance but eventually lost to the fistballers from the coast. CFC 3 advanced to the final after an average game which they only won by two points in the semi-final against CFC 4. The final was highly contested before SFC's Knolle Kolb came on as substitute and created more pressure in the attack. With this change, SFC deservingly won the trophy. In the match for third place, CFC 4 won against DTS. Eleven-year-old Mika Pilzer from CFC 4 was the tournament's Player of the Day. Next on the fistball calendar is the First League Round of the Bank Windhoek Fistball League scheduled to take place on Saturday, 17 March 2018 at SKW Sport Club in Windhoek."We look forward to this year's league and want to thank our sponsor, Bank Windhoek," said Michael Baas, Chairman of the Namibia Fistball Association.

Swakopmund hosts AUSC Marathon Rudi Bowe

Namibia will be the host of the African Union Sport Council (AUSC) Region Five Marathon for the next four years. The Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, the Namibia Sports Commission and the Namibia National Olympic Committee will be partnering up for this purpose. The first marathon takes place on 23 June in Swakopmund. Ms Jo-Ann Manuel, chairperson of the local organising committee said "last year the marathon route of 42.2 kilometres was certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)." Ms Manuel added this year's event will be the same format as last year. The AUSC Region Five is made up of Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The first marathon was hosted in Malawi in 2015, followed by Mozambique in 2016. Namibia was the host in 2017, with only Botswana and Malawi that pitched up for the event. A strong letter was sent to AUSC, requesting the participation of all member countries. The event is a good initiative, as it can be used by

athletes from all AUSC Region Five countries to participate and qualify for international championships. Separately from the marathon and five kilometres fun walk, the organising committee would like to add other codes. Manuel mentioned that the marathon and fun walk is open to everybody. Prize money will be up for grabs for the top five participants. Registration for both events are now open. The deadline for entries is yet to be announced. Manuel urged the Namibia business community and individuals to assist Government with sponsorships in the course of the next four years.
