More fire fighters for Swakopmund Erwin Leuschner

The Swakopmund Town Council has created four additional positions for fire fighters, in order to improve fire safety service delivery, especially to the residents of the DRC and Mondesa. The new appointment will cost Town Council N$ 1.4 million per year. The decision was taken by Town Council at its recent meeting. Swakopmund will soon have a total of ten fire fighters with four more members to join the team once the jobs are advertised and the suited candidates appointed. Town Council recently approved the new positions as members of the public, especially residents of Mondesa and DRC, raised concerns about the frequency of fire incidents. According to the Agenda of the recent meeting, Town Council conducted a series of public meetings aimed at gaining inputs, comments, aspirations and expectations from the residents. “Amongst the concerns raised by the public the subject of fire incidents in Mondesa and DRC featured prominently, particularly, the need for a prompt and adequate response time from the Swakopmund Fire Brigade,” it states. After considering these concerns, Council decided to introduce a three shift system for the DRC and Mondesa where shack fires occur most frequent. According to the Agenda the fire station in DRC has been upgraded recently, being able to accommodate fire fighters on a 24/7

A shack fire in the DRC basis. “The fire station is situated in the centre of the DRC and when staffed with permanent fire fighters the response time of fire incidents will be greatly improved,” it states. The yearly salary for one Fire Fighter is estimated at about N$328 000. “This means that appointing four additional fire fighters will cost Council in the region of N$1.4 million (taking into account possible salary increases),” it states. Council decided to make the necessary budgetary provision for these new positions in the 2016/2017 financial year. The dire situation of the Swakopmund Fire Brigade is further explained in the Agenda. “Fire incidents are a regular occurrence in the DRC and Mondesa, almost at a fortnightly

rate, and create indescribable suffering to the community including victims and their families through loss of properties and even lives. This situation calls for an urgent re-look at our operation and staffing in order to better serve and protect our community,” it states. The situation in DRC and Mondesa is aggravated by the fact that shacks are built from highly combustible materials with the result that such structures get destroyed by the fire much faster compared to normal brick houses. If a fire team is available at the fire station in DRC on a 24/7 basis this arrangement will definitely make the Fire Brigade more effective resulting in a drastic reduction in response time.

Waste management Continued from page 1 residents generate about 70 tons of waste daily. About 80% of that can be recycled. Amongst the many aims of the policy it also has the purpose to improve socio-economic sustainability, public and environmental health by providing equitable and sustainable waste management services at reasonable prices. Furthermore it should promote and encourage effective waste recycling. It also has the objective to develop mechanisms to encourage the private sector to enter into solid waste management operations, and to formally connect the public and private sectors towards improving the effectiveness and efficiency management of waste. “The main objectives are to also promote a sense of responsibility through environmental education and environmental awareness programmes,” it states. The Swakopmund Recycling Sorting Plant officially started operating in October 2015: A total of 77 tons of solid were sorted in the first month, which would otherwise have ended up at the landfill. Up until the month of February this figure has grown to 208 tons. If every household and business in Swakopmund and surrounding areas would strictly enforce the separation of recyclable waste and have it end up at the sorting plant, this figure could stand at more than 50 tons daily.

Children at Christene’s Soup Kitchen gets 400 apples Sharlien Tjambari An anonymous donor donated 400 apples to Christenes Soup Kitchen in DRC, Swakopmund. The donation follows a report in the namib times, after the owner, Christina /Awaras came to the paper looking for assistance with food. The apples were delivered at namib times Swakopmund office last week. Christina was surprised when namib times showed up with boxes of apples at her Soup Kitchen on Friday, 10 June. “I am very thankful to the person who donated this apples” said Christina. The first group of children who usually eats at Christenes Soup Kitchen were so happy to see the apples and could not wait to take the first bite. There were about 30-40 children at the kitchen when namib times got there, but Christina said “they are still coming. The children from Atlantic and the other secondary schools are not here because the schools does not go out early and these ones here are from Hanganeni and they always get here first. A lot of them are still coming,” Christina concluded. The soup kitchen was established in 2011 with the main aim of keeping the children off the crowded and dangerous streets of DRC and to help feed the poor and the needy.

RMS Saint Helena bids UK farewell

The world's last remaining mail ship, the RMS Saint Helena, departs London in the United Kingdom for her last time today, returning to the South Atlantic to work her remaining months between Cape Town and the mid-Atlantic island of Saint Helena. RMS Saint Helena called at Walvis Bay over several years on scheduled voyages between Cape Town and the Island. Some six years ago RMS Saint Helena cut Walvis Bay out for a direct schedule to Saint Helena. In recent months though, an international airport was completed at Saint Helena with weekly flights to Johannesburg. The mail ship service is now becoming redundant – RMS Saint Helena will be sailing three more scheduled voyages between Cape Town and the Island and will dock one final time at Cape Town on 27 September. On the picture – knowing this is the last time RMS St Helena will visit the United Kingdom she is seen here crossing under Londen's Tower Bridge upon her arrival there on 7 June this year. Last minute efforts are now made by the contractor to submit the building plans for approval.

Namibian roads claim 24 lives in less than 3 days The MVA Fund Board, Executive Leadership Team and entire staff wish to convey heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, friends, colleagues and community members of the 12 persons who lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes over the past 3 days. May the departed souls rest in eternal peace. A mass casualty involving 15 persons occurred on Saturday, 11 June about 13km from Outapi towards Oshikuku when two pick-up vehicles collided head-on. Six persons lost their lives; 5 on scene and 1 in hospital. Eight (8) of the nine (9) persons who sustained varying degrees of injury were transferred to Oshakati State Hospital with one (1) admitted to Outapi State Hospital. The condition of the injured persons is moderate but stable. On the same day, a fatal road crash occurred near the Okapuka Tannery close to Okahandja, when a vehicle carrying two (2) occupants rolled-over, claiming the life of one (1) person. On Friday, 10 June about 20 km from Okahandja towards Windhoek, a Quantum kombi carrying 12 occupants overturned while overtaking another vehicle, and in the process of overturning, collided with a pick-up vehicle which was stationery next to the road at a construction site. This year Mpact launched a recycling competition in collaboration with the 'Recycling Namibia Forum' (RFN). The proceedings of this competition was to aid the Save the Rhino Trust Namibia which works tirelessly to protect the desert-adapted black rhino of the Kunene and Erongo regions.

Four little spellers from Walvis Bay proudly walked away with prizes and trophies this weekend. The learners from gr 1 to 4, consisting of different primary schools learners in Walvis Bay, gathered at the Kuisebmond community hall where they battled with words against each other. Learners were given a list of words to study during the past holidays, and were well prepared for the competition. The children performed exceptionally well, especially the grade 3 group, which had to be given extra difficult words in order to have a winner. Fifty-two learners participated in the spelling Bee, that was organized by the FAITH EDUCATION CENTER in Kuisebmond. Speaking at the event, the councillor for the Walvis Bay urban constituency, Hafeni Ndemula, urged parents to enrol children in afternoon classes, where they will get the necessary support to learn how to read. Ndemula also stressed that parents should spend time supporting their children in learning new

words, as it will improve their learning abilities. The senior education inspector Joseph Mavuku also addressed the gathering, noting that reading is the most beneficial activity for any human being, most especially when it starts with a young mind. It serves as a stress reliever, as well as opening up a way of reaching out to the world. The Senior Education officer of the Erongo Region, Josef Marthin said parents should make it a priority to introduce books and words at an early stage, so that their children's vocabulary can be expanded. He noted that it is a proven fact that children who read, are articulated and achieves the best in life. According to

owner of Faith Education Centre, Taati Niilenge, the competition was held as an opportunity to enhance the education of Walvis Bay children. “This is our attempt to enable the children to read and spell better by spending some time on words during holidays. We aim at snatching them away from the claws of technology, and towards the direction of books. Many children fail language subjects because they cannot read or write. Children at High schools even have a hard time writing essays because they can't spell the words. The foundation needs to start effectively in Primary school. Using this fun way of learning to spell will encourage

learners to continue learning new words to win the next competition. Niilenge noted that the Faith Education Centre plans to have similar competitions every year. Children will be more motivated to learn more words because they want to win the next BEE. Children at the centre are doing exceptionally well, but others outside are really struggling. Although we cannot accommodate the entire Walvis Bay's children, we have decided to involve them in the learning process by creating such a competition, which will in the end benefit most of the children in Walvis Bay. The competition might also add a category for older children soon.

MEDIA RELEASE

Closure of KFC Botswana has no effect on Namibia WINDHOEK, 13 JUN (NAMPA) – The closure of international fast-food outlet, KFC franchise in Botswana will not have an effect on its crispy Namibian counterpart. According to recent media reports, Venture Partners-Botswana (VPB) Propco has announced the closure of KFC Botswana and its 12 branches across the country after 20 years of operating there.

Esmond Fraser, Branding Material Consultant at Bank Windhoek and some of the pupils from Suiderhof Primary School, in Windhoek

VPB Propco, a subsidiary of VPB, owns KFC Botswana and their core activity is to manage KFC in Botswana and are responsible for marketing the products and brands. Approached for comment, KFC Africa Managing Director, Doug Smart told Nampa on Friday the KFC franchisee in Botswana owned by VPB Propco, was put under provisional liquidation as a result of their ongoing inability to meet contractual obligations. “This provisional liquidation is due to the ongoing inability of the franchisee to meet contractual obligations. An independent provisional liquidator has been assigned to manage the process,” he said. Not disclosing what contractual obligations the Botswana outlets are failing to meet, Smart said the liquidation is completely unrelated to the performance of the KFC business in other markets. “This is isolated only to Botswana,” he stressed. He noted that KFC has a long history in Namibia with 18 outlets in the country and the business has been doing well. Smart said this performance in Namibia is an indication of future growth and they are planning to expand and open new restaurants in the near future. The franchise has about 500 employees in Namibia. The closure of KFC Botswana has left over 400 employees jobless. (NAMPA)

Young Entrepreneurs can win big through the seventh Annual Bank Windhoek Bizzkids competition Bank Windhoek launched the seventh annual Bank Windhoek BizzKids Competition, an entrepreneurial competition designed to help scholars realise their business ideas, on Monday 13 June 2016, at Suiderhof Primary School, in Windhoek. The competition is a platform created for scholars across Namibia, between the ages of 8 and 16, to sell and promote their own products and services. The scholars are encouraged to enter the competition and win the opportunity to put their business savvy to the test, during the Bank Windhoek BizzKids Market, scheduled to take place on 28 and 29 October 2016, at Maerua Mall Shopping Centre, in Windhoek. The Bank Windhoek BizzKids Competition's main objective is to educate the Namibian youth about entrepreneurship and give the young entrepreneurs an opportunity to enter a competition whereby they can win one of 10 exhibition stands at the Bank Windhoek BizzKids Market. Last year, Danie van der Merwe (15), who traded as “Nou Gaan Ons Braai” from Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool (WAP), walked away with prize money of N$5 000 for himself and N$5 000 for his school. Danie, who impressed the judges with his business acumen and sales techniques, despite his young age, sold handmade braai packs.

The braai pack consisted of 2 kg charcoal, a packet of matches and one packet of Danie's favourite mixed spices. This braai pack is perfect if you want to braai in just 15 minutes. “The Bank Windhoek Solo BizzKids experience was one of the best highlights of my life and taking part in the Bank Windhoek BizzKids Competition was a great learning experience. It taught me that creating a business takes a lot of work, effort and planning, but in the end all the hard work paid off,” said Danie. All children with great business ideas are encouraged to enter the competition and stand a chance to be crowned the 2016 BizzKids Winner. It is fun and the experience is really valuable and remarkable. “The BizzKids Competition is part of Bank Windhoek's contribution to the development and growth of Namibia's economy by creating youth that are willing to take risks and think beyond traditional ways of doing business. It is imperative for Namibia to encourage entrepreneurship amongst the youth and by doing so decrease unemployment in the country,” said Riaan van Rooyen, Head of Corporate Communication and Social Investment. The closing date for entries is 9 September 2016 and the finalists will be announced on 23 September 2016. We are not just confined to land issues: Amupanda The planned demonstration against the proposed new parliament will start at the Katutura Multi-purpose Youth Centre at 09h00 on Thursday, the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement says. The demonstrators will then proceed to Snyman Circle in the central business district, AR leader Job Amupanda said at a media briefing on Sunday. Amupanda said various consultations with the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) on Friday necessitated the change of plan. “We are not just confined to land but on issues that reflect economic freedom as well and by the way, this will be last time that they tell us where to go and where not to go when we have our demonstrations,” he said. Amupanda noted that they were given two options by the police. “We either had to choose Snyman Circle or some dirty and dusty place at Wernhill Park, so we opted for Snyman Circle, but if [Peter] Katjavivi does not attend to us, we will proceed and go to Parliament and no one will stop us,” said AR member Bernadine Johannes. Speaker of the National Assembly, Peter Katjavivi is expected to receive the AR petition. Amupanda also noted that their demonstrations are not necessarily based on the exorbitant amount of money to be spent on the construction of the proposed building valued at N.dollars 2.4 billion, but on “economic freedom”. Meanwhile, AR leader Dimbulukeni Nauyoma revealed that they plan on having a public dialogue on the proposed new building and other social issues and an annual commemoration of the Soweto uprising in co-relation with the demonstrations, on 16 June. The Soweto uprising was a series of protests led by high school students in South Africa that began on the morning of 16 June 1976. “We will never go back to the Soweto uprising, it will never happen again but we have to make it meaningful for us. In fact, we have to commemorate that day and what that day means to us. We have to make it meaningful in our lives as young people,” said Nauyoma. Nauyoma also added that they will have a live screening of popular South African movie ‘Sarafina’ for inspiration ahead of Thursday’s demonstration. (NAMPA)

Warriors preparatons going well; Mannetti Brave Warriors head coach Ricardo Mannetti says his players' preparation for the game against Botswana on Saturday in the 2016 Cosafa Cup are going well.Namibia and Botswana both enter the competition in the quarter-final stage. The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup commenced on Saturday and ends on 25 June. Namibia is the defending champion. Mannetti told Nampa on Monday everything is going according to plan, and he is looking forward to naming his 20man squad either on Tuesday or Wednesday. There are no injury concerns within the team. His remarks come after the Brave Warriors’ preparatory match that was scheduled against Zambia last Saturday was cancelled, raising concerns that the team will be short of match practice. The match was called off because the Namibian players were required to be at the tournament's opening ceremony on the same day. The coach revealed that Namibia faces a tough task in trying to defend the title won in South Africa last year after beating Mozambique by two goals to nil. He noted that most teams in Southern Africa have improved, hence the need to be fully prepared for a tournament

of this magnitude. “All teams now see us as a big player in the region; they no longer see us the whipping boys, so that means we must be on top of our game all the time. Our aim is to give a good showing, and defend our trophy.” Quizzed about Virgil Vries and Chris Katjiukua who recently went absent without leave, Mannetti revealed that the two had apologised to the Namibia Football Association and their teammates for their antics. “There are no hard feelings from us (technical team) and the rest of the team, we have accepted their apology and we have moved on. “I am not sure though if they will be in the final 20. We still have to sit as the technical team and evaluate the situation,” Mannetti said. The match kicks off at 17:30. (NAMPA)
