NCCI Walvis Bay in hot water over selective membership Floris Steenkamp A group of businessmen of Walvis Bay claim the local chapter of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI Walvis Bay) refuses to accept them as members. The matter is now under investigation by the National Executive of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) which reportedly postponed the NCCI Walvis Bay's Annual General Meeting (scheduled for March 2016) until the matter has been resolved. Documents handed to namib times show copies of receipts dating back as early as September 2014 where some of these businessmen paid for their membership, but to date they had no response from the NCCI Walvis Bay. The businessmen are mistrusting the intentions of the Walvis Bay NCCI, stating certain businessmen from the NCCI are running the NCCI Walvis Bay as an exclusive club. Also that they are being discriminated
upon, based on colour and the fact that many of their businesses are from the informal sector and not elite corporates or larger businesses of which the owners are financially strong and established. The disgruntled businessmen organised themselves into the Walvis Bay Business People Forum and demand to become members of the NCCI Walvis Bay. Some indicated the time has come for the NCCI Walvis Bay to become more representative of the business community of Walvis Bay and want leaders elected which can bring the branch to its full potential. More documents in the possession of namib time confirm the Walvis Bay Business Forum requested an audience with the NCCI Walvis Bay in May 2015. The letter was signed by forum leaders Patrick Barthlomeus and Aloysius Kangulu. The letter explains business owners' frustrations with NCCI Walvis Bay not signing up their businesses as members. It resulted in
businesses registering in mass, yet with no response forthcoming. Businessmen then indicated in this letter they will engage the NCCI at national level on the matter. The letter also expressed satisfaction with the NCCI branches at Swakopmund and Oshakati where businesses are not discriminated upon on size or nature, and that even kapana sellers are members or are encouraged to take up membership. In the same letter disgruntled businessmen accuse the NCCI Walvis Bay of not conducting activities such as training or disseminating important information such as trade missions etc. Businesspeople straightforwardly accuses the NCCI Walvis Bay of discriminatory practises, based on the fact most of the businesses the NCCI Walvis Bay refuses to register are owned by people residing in Kuisebmond and Narraville who are of black and coloured ethnic origin. The NCCI Walvis Bay reportedly never reacted
