Near stampede as thousands of angry parents compete for 73 Grade 1 places Piquet Jacobs

Police reservists were dispatched to restore order at the Kuisebmond Community Hall yesterday morning, after chaos erupted and escalated into a near stampede as more than a thousand agitated parents tried to register their children for Grade 1 for 2018 at Tutaleni- and Nara primary school.

The schools can only accommodate 38 and 35 Grade 1's respectively. The registration process was held at the community hall for logistical purposes, but officials misjudged the overwhelming response from parents who are desperate for their children to find place for Grade 1 in 2018. There was also a lack of control over the number of people and when impatience got the better of many, the situation got out of control and assistance of members of the police was called in.

Burundian national caught with four grams of cocaine Erwin Leuschner

The police arrested a Burundian national over the weekend at a popular dance club in Swakopmund after he was allegedly found to be in possession of cocaine. Amini Sezerano (24) appeared in the town's magistrates court yesterday and was granted bail of N$2 000. The arrest of the Burundian national with cocaine follows only days after the arrest of Nigerian national who was detected by customs officials at the port of Walvis Bay International Airport with a stash of undeclared US Dollar bills. "The arrest of foreign nationals with drugs and undeclared stashes of cash is cumbersome and we need vigilance to protect Namibia from becoming a safe harbor or thoroughfare of international syndicates", a senior police official said in Swakopmund yesterday. On an official note: according to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the suspect originates from the Osire refugee camp in Khomas. He was arrested on Saturday morning about 30 minutes past midnight in front of Vintage Dance Club. He was in possession of four grams of cocaine powder with an estimated street value of N$2 000. Sezerano appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrates court yesterday on a charge of being in possession of a dependence producing substance. Magistrate Jorina Jagger postponed the matter to 23 October for laboratory results to confirm whether indeed the substance is cocaine.

Fuel prices to drop by 50 cents per litre Fuel prices will drop by 50 cents a litre in Namibia at oneminute past midnight tomorrow, 5 July 2017. The pump prices at Walvis Bay will then be N$10,50 per litre for petrol and N$10,33 and N$10,38 respectively for 500ppm diesel and 50ppm diesel. The major reason for this favourable drop in the fuel price is the fact that the prices for both crude and refined oil performed less than what was expected when OPEC members

agreed to cut crude oil production in an attempt to spur a demand and thus higher market prices. There were expectations that crude oil prices would have

hovered above US$65 by June, but to the contrary June recorded crude oil prices of between US$57 and US$60 per barrel. "For the past four months, the prices have Continues on Page 2
