ficult time for the Komape family. SECTION27 welcomes the judgment of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in the case of Komape v Minister of Basic Education and Others. The judgment of the SCA awards damages for emotional shock and grief to each member

of the Komape family to the total value of R1.4 million as well as future medical expenses for each member of the Komape Family. This is a victory for the Komape family as damages for both emotional shock and grief had been dismissed by the Polokwane High Court in

2018. Michael died on 20 January 2014 by drowning in a pit toilet at his school in the Limpopo Province. The civil claim was launched in the Polokwane High Court in 2015. This case has subsequently been ongoing for over five years and proved to be a deeply emotional and dif-

judgment once we have received the judgment and have had an opportunity to study it and consult with the family. SECTION27 wishes to express our gratitude to Legal Aid South Africa for funding our representation of the Komape family and their pursuit for justice.Pictures by www.news365. co.za

VhaVenda seniour traditional leader protest kingship report

THE report declares Princess Masindi Mphephu as the rightful heir to the throne. Some VhaVenda senior traditional leaders in Limpopo have announced their withdrawal from both the National and Provincial House of Traditional Leaders to express their unhappiness with the VhaVenda kingship report. The houses have submitted a report to the Limpopo High Court which declares Toni Mphephu-Ramabulana ineligible as head of the Venda Kingdom. The report declares Princess Masindi Mphephu as the rightful heir to the throne. Chief Mbangiseni Masia says they are distancing themselves from the report because it was compiled without following proper processes. “We are ever disturbed by the work assigned to the houses both national and provincial,

that work was poorly done there was no proof of any investigation that took place. We distance ourselves from such a report, we are not part of that report. All our senior traditional leaders of Venda descent are withdrawing from the house because they cannot continue to be part of an institution that does not protect their custom and tradition.” Spokesperson for the Mphephu-Ramabulana Royal House, Ntsieni Ramabulana, says they will make their own submission to challenge the report. “We as the family we have got nothing to say. All we can say is that we have heard what they say and we respect their decision because they took their decision independently. Obviously we can’t go to the merit of that report but we are definitely going to make a submission regarding that report.”

LIMPOPO PREMIER BROKER PEACE BETWEEN DR THOMAS CHAUKE AND MEC MORAKA

THE premier of Limpopo, Chupu Mathabathata this week meet with both the MEC for Sport, Art and Culture, Dr Thomas Chauke and his Traditional Leaders at Xikundu Traditional Authority office in Malamulele. The meeting, which included, the local traditional leadership was part of the Premier’s efforts to find a long-lasting solution to the impasse created as a result of the alleged maltreatment of the Xitsonga Music legendary Chauke, during the recent annual Mapungubwe Music festival held at Old Peter Mokaba stadium. “I implore on

the people of Limpopo to join us in our continued efforts to build a united and prosperous province for Limpopo is home for all”, emphasized Premier Mathabatha Chauke expressed his disappointment in his treatment during the festival where his performance was stopped allegedly by the stage managers who told him that they were acting on instruction. It’s alleged that MEC Thandi Moraka instructed that Chauke’s performance be stopped as they wanted to use the fireworks and play a cross-over song on Saturday night. Moraka later

dismissed these allegations against her as baseless in an interview with the SABC, saying: “I did not grab the mic from the musician. I am the one who insisted on Chauke to be included on the line up. I don’t deal with artists, I was not even close to that process of managing the flow and movement of artists. I came onto the stage because they said, MEC, it is time for you to come and introduce the surprise artists. This is something that is so unfortunate and we need to apologise to Chauke and his supporters.”

The parade which started in the early hours of the morning ended up at the Jack Botes were people were

entertained by different cultural activities which include traditional dancers. Apart from the Street Carnival, other activities which formed part of the R10 million worth event as a build up to the main event include Diva and Comedy Night which wowed spectators. The main event on December 14 was out of this world with old school musicians such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the rejuvenated Mahotella Queens and more taking

old music lovers back to the time down the memory lanes. Gospel artists such as Lebo Sekgobela, Ribecca Malope, Winnie Mashaba, Dr Tumi just to mention few set the stage on fire with their melodies. 6 R TIVEKA LODGE IS THE PLACE YOU NEEED FOR PEACE OF MIND DECEMBER 2019 - JANUARY 2020

YOUR RELIABLE LOCAL SOURCE

TIVEKA Game Lodge is one of the best accommodation facilities of its kind in the vicinity Limpopo’s capital, Polokwane. However, with growing competition in the sector, the enterprising Tiveka Stellah Mathumbu has an ace up her sleeve to upgrade her lodge, WRITES NAKAMPE LEKWADU Mathumbu says she's finalising on a plan to add an 18-hole golf course on her property to attract business people and golfers looking for a setting with a difference to pursue new golfing challenges. Her property in pristine wilderness is on a massive 132ha land. “It used to be a game farm specialising in hunting when I bought it back in 2006,” explains Mathumbu. “It was a brave step because I did not have the experience to manage such a massive piece of land for commercial purposes. I trusted my intuition and dedication to succeed.” Mathumbu who was born at Ngove village outside Giyani, a 188km northeast of Tiveka lodge is a former teacher, the career she has been for 25 years. As her name Tiveka suggests – be famous in Tsonga – she was destines for greater things. In 2001 she resigned from teaching and went into business. Her late start in business was no big deal because Mathumbu is from a business family. “My father was a businessman. He had many shops around

Giyani area. As kids we got to help in the shops and that way I also learnt about business. My father wanted us to get education and be independent as professionals but he never said we can't be business people. Besides, I sold stuff during my school days, like ice pops, baked fish and scones.” After she resigned she relocated to Polokwane to start a new life. “I opened a restaurant and added traditional food on the menu and catered to different government departments in the city, as well as private clients in local communities. People loved my food so much and my dream was to acquire a bigger place where I would be able to display my talent. That's how the idea of the lodge was formulated.” Tiveka is situated just 33km southwest of Polokwane, along the R101 road to Gauteng. The lodge occupies a pride of in the Eerstegoud valley and at the foothills of the Swartberg mountains. It has facilities and services to cater for day visitors, sleepover travellers and guests who stay for weekends or longer periods. The lodge offers dining services, conferencing and weddings and other events such as parties and school excursions. “The latter has also inspired me to raise the stakes in as far as accommodation and entertainment of chilkdren and

younger people is concerned. I was youth clubs or schools to trust Tiveka for getaways. That's why plans for suitable facilities are at an advanced stage.” As far as accommodation is concerned, visitors are spoilt for choice. In total there are 64 rooms but in different types of housing, from rondavels to chalets. Other facilities and services to enjoy are game drives, swimming pool, braai areas and a bar. Mathumbu took her love for African traditional cuisine to the lodge, and this has proved to be the magnet for scores of visitors. Even better, the

weather in the Swartberg is fantastic all round including winter. “It took me two years to break even, so there were hard times indeed. In addition, in 2008 the Limpopo government departments were placed under administration, and this had a negative impact on the business as they (departments) were among my main clients. I never gave up, and that also opened my eyes to diversify my marketing strategy. I took my business to social groups, schools, universities and corporate clients. I am someone who doesn’t easily give up.” Mathumbu has indeed come a long way in the 10 years since she bought the property, start-

ing wth six rooms and two employees. Tiveka today has 64 rooms and 22 full time workers. She bought the property in September 2006 and spent most of 2007 with renovation and construction work to add all the facilities the lodge boasts today, from the reception hall to luxury chalets. Apart from her own savings and pension fund, she was also helped by a Department of Trade and Industry grant. Mathumbu has not stopped dreaming, as she is looking to expand beyond the sports and youth camp facilities she is planning.

LIMPOPO’S ABSA PREMIERSHIP CLUBS SCATTING ON A THIN LINE

LIMPOPO representatives in the country’s elite league goes to the festive holidays on a sour note after all the three clubs failed to bag points in their last Absa Premiership matches on the 2019 calendar. Although Black Leopards were the biggest losers after they were nailed 3-1 by Orlando Pirates away, it is Polokwane City who have suffered a

major setback after Rise and Shine narrowly lost 1-0 to second positioned Mamelodi Sundowns. The defeat in the hands of the Brazilians pushed the once fearful Polokwane side to the basement of the log, the position they will occupy until January 2020 or even further than that should they not collect point come next year. City who have become the

shadow of former self are lying on the 16th position with 13 points from 4 wins, 1 draw and 10 losses after 15 matches and they will have to up their socks if they don’t want to see themselves either relegated or participate in the Play-Offs. Their rivals, Baroka FC are equally scatting on a thin line and their 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch FC at home has made

the situation difficult for them. Bakgaga are lying on the 14th position with 13 points from 3 wins, 5 draws and 7 loses after 14 matches while Leopards are hanging on to dear life through a shoe string on the 11th position from 16 points. This after Lidoda Duvha have managed to bag home 16 points from 4 wins, 4 draws and 6 loses from 14

matches. The three clubs starts the 2020 calendar with some early matches which will see Polokwane City facing Chippa United at home on January 4 while Baroka and Leopards will be away to Cape Town FC and Highlands Park on January 5 respectively.

CHIEFS TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS WITH FANS ON JANUARY 8 AT FNB

KAIZER Chiefs will celebrate the first game as a 50-year-old club with its supporters at FNB Stadium on 8 January 2020 by giving away free match tickets. The game against Highlands Park will be played a day after South Africa’s most popular

club celebrates half a century in existence. As a special gift to the loyal supporters who have travelled the long journey with the club, which was founded on 7 January 1970, we will give supporters a gift of a maximum two (2) tickets per person to attend the game with friends and family members. Tickets

for the match are available for free collection at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers outlets. All that is required is an ID or driver’s licence to receive this great reward. “The fixture against Highlands Park is an historical and significant match and our plan for the club’s 50th anniversary celebration is to reminisce with our older fans and educate our younger fans about the history of this institution; how we came to be where we are today. We encourage them to take advantage of the Christmas gift the club is offering and get their tickets,” says Jessica Motaung, Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director. In this light, Highlands Park will be the fitting opposition on the day. Back in 1978, South Africa saw the formation of its first multiracial football league. The previous year, Highlands Park were the last team to win the all-white league and were a force to reckon with in

local football. Similarly, Chiefs were the last team to win the all-black league. The rivalry began 41 years ago on 1 April 1978 when the two teams met on equal term for the first time. Chiefs, under the captaincy of Ryder Mofokeng, won the game 3-1 with former Chiefs player Jerry Sadike, scoring the first goal for Highlands Park who had Martin Cohen, Gordon Igesund, Hennie and Jimmy Joubert in their team. Amakhosi came back strongly in the second half with goals from Teenage Dladla, Computer Lamola and Malombo Lechaba. The Chiefs team was packed with legends such as Bull Lehoko, Sugar Muguyo, Banks Setlhodi and City Kole. Jimmy Joubert would later on join Amakhosi. In 1979, Chiefs beat Highlands Park 2-0 in the Mainstay Cup final to win the first trophy in the multiracial league. There will be some exciting pre-match and half-time activities for all

in attendance. There will be performances by some of our finest local artists. The game will also see a multitude of former Chiefs players gathered to celebrate the significant milestone in the history of the club. “It is important that no one is left out in our celebrations in our 50th year and we urge supporters to get to Computicket as early as possible to avoid disappointments,” adds Motaung. “We will roll out our more mind-blowing plans as we progress.” Tickets are limited and will be distributed out on a firstcome-first-served basis. Parking will also be free for all supporters. The club will work with Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA) and law enforcement agencies to ensure supporters are safe by providing adequate security.
