JOYRIDE EARLY DAYS FOR BAROKA FC BAROKA FC who survived relegation through the skin of their teeth got off their 2020/21 DSTV Premiership to a good start after winning their first two matches. Up the Bakgagas as the GaMphahlele, Limpopo based side is commonly registered a back to back victories, beating Maritzburg United 2-1 at their Peter Mokaba home in Polokwane in the opening league match on October 24 before they could turn the heat on cross-town neighbours, Black Leopards whom they lambasted 3-1 away at the Thohoyandou Stadium on October 27 Baroka’s early good start also saw their star player, Richard Mbulu quickly make an impact on the process as he has scored three of the five goals scored, a brace against Leopards and another goal in the

match against United. The two goals came from Evans Makgopa, pictured, (against Leopards) and Bandile Shandu (against United). By the time of going to the press ahead of their third match at home to Golden Arrows on November 4, Baroka were still on top of the log with six points, followed by league defending champions on the second position with four points from one victory and one draw. Meanwhile Black Leopards who also survived the chop last season by a whisker started their season on a very low note, losing all their first two matches (2-0 to SuperSport United and the same Baroka). Lidoda Duvha are at the basement of the log with 0 points and their last men of

defense have since conceded five goals on the process. Their other fellow Limpopo outfit, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) who found their passage to the elite league via the purchasing of BidVest Wits status are 11th on the log with two points after back to back draws against Golden Arrows (1-1) and goalless against Sundowns. In recent season, Limpopo clubs always find themselves fighting off relegation at the end of each season and it remain to be seen as to how they will perform this season. Polokwane City have since kissed goodbye their top flight league status and their poor performance last season and will have to settle life in the Glad Africa Championships.

KHOZA HONOURS MATTHEWS, Mosimane and NAICKER THE Premier Soccer League Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza recently honoured three individuals for their contribution in football with a Chairman’s Award at the PSL Awards event. SuperSport United Chief Executive, Stan Matthews, former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane and long-serving broadcaster Alvin Naicker were the three recipients of the 2019/20 Chairman’s Award. On Alvin Nicker, Dr Khoza said: “This gentleman has not only been there since inception, it is on his broad shoulders that the quality and innovation in the television coverage of the PSL product rest. The PSL product compete in real time with the EPL, the most followed and successful league in the world. “The PSL product holds its own thanks to the studiousness, tenacity and grim persistence of Mr Alvin Naicker. Enablers like Mr Naicker are never recognised as we enjoy the fruits of their toil without ever seeing or hearing from them.” On Stan Matthews, Dr Khoza said: “If ever there was an award for the most successful CEO, then this hard working enabler

would be a multiple winner. He takes the punches in order for his people to succeed with minimum interference. He, himself pack a massive punch. Among his successes is the creating of space and support for the rise of the most successful coach in South Africa. Ladies and Gentlemen please join me in recognising and applauding this enabler – Mr Stanley Matthews.” On Pitso Mosimane, Dr Khoza said: “In 2013 I made a prediction. It was at the PSL Awards at Gold Reef City. I used a salutation ya Sepedi, Mr Phumlani Msibi – the PSL encyclopaedia will help you recall, “shate!, shate!, o a sa reng shate wa duma”. I made a prediction then that this recipient would bring to South Africa the next CAF Champions League star. “In 2016 he fulfilled my prediction. I said then that the singularity of his attention to detail was such that he would cement his position as the most successful club coach in South Africa – which he has just done. Today as I recognise his achievements with a Chairman’s Award, congratulations Mr Pitso Mosimane.”
