unconsciously putting the idea in me to become an aircraft mechanic when I’m older,” he says. After high school graduation, Masetloa moved to #Johannesburg to study mechanical engineering at the #UniversityOfJohannesburg, and he discovered a #DenelAviation brochure while at tertiary. In 2015 Masetloa applied for Apprenticeship at Denel technical academy but there was no one to sponsor him. He thereafter got a sponsorship from the #SACAA through Joint Aviation Awareness Programme (JAAP). “I was the only chosen one from the class to study theory for aircraft mechanic which takes 3 - 4 years to complete. Everything was paid off including catering, tuition fees, accommodation and tool box,” he says. Once he completed his apprenticeship, Masetloa started his On-the-Job Training (#OJT) with #SAExpress to fill in his hours in the logbook. “It takes a minimum of 2880 hours of working on an aircraft, to qualify to write a trade test and become an artisan. I started and did only a few hours with the SA Express, and completed the training with #FlySAFair. Immediately after completing my hours, I applied for my trade test,” he adds. Masetloa recalls that his trade test wasn't an easy journey, but he managed to pass it, and after qualifying, he got recruited by FlySafair as a junior aviation mechanic. Masetloa believes his journey in aviation has just begun. “I'm still young and I still want to grow in this industry. One day I want to see myself as a flight inspector at the SACAA, inspecting big airlines like #SAA, #Kulula and many more. I truly believe everything is possible if you believe in yourself. My principal, Mr L.A Mogashoa used to say, ‘without a good attitude, you are going nowhere,’” he concluded.South African Civil Aviation Authority - SACAA

7 SUZUKI LAUNCHES NEW-LOOK BALENO eview

HATCHBACK buyers looking to stretch their legs and their budgets, can now pop in to their nearest Suzuki dealership to test drive the refreshed Suzuki Baleno. The new model is available immediately with a new look, new colours, upgraded trim and upholstery inside and a high specifications level on both the GL and GLX models. The Baleno was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015 and has since become a popular hatchback in over 30 countries for its B-segment price and near-C-segment space. Indeed, the Baleno is 3 995 mm long and offers a 2 520 mm wheelbase, which is 70 mm longer than a Suzuki Swift and on a par with some C-segment contenders. This new model range first landed in South Africa shortly after its Frankfurt debut and introduced Suzuki’s “Liquid Flow” design language to a new generation of vehicles. In the Baleno, this is most evident in the line that starts with the chrome detailing in the grille and flows in wide swathes across the bonnet and over the hip line to meet at the rear boot lid. Interestingly, the Liquid Flow

style has given the Baleno a wind-cheating aerodynamic ratio of 0.299, which makes it the most aerodynamic hatchback-model in the local range. A new look In the new model, the signature Liquid Flow line is more accentuated, thanks to a wide and more three-dimensional chrome strip that frames a new grille and S-emblem. The grill itself is more aggressive, and the chrome strip now passes through the front headlights to end at the fender-line. The headlights feature a new three-dimensional design, and on the GLX specification, the high-impact discharge (HID) lamps are replaced with LEDs. Rounding off the new look is a deeply sculpted lower bumper with a hexagonal centre intake. Sharper creases mirror those on the bonnet and add to the more aggressive profile. The GLX models have integrated fog lamps in this lower section. The Baleno in GLX specification also adds new polished diamond cut alloy wheels and chrome door handles, beltline and on the rear tailgate. There is a spoiler on the rear tailgate and dark privacy glass on the rear doors and tailgate.

Suzuki has launched the upgraded Baleno with six colours to choose from, including the new Magma Grey metallic finish. Inside the Baleno, the twotone colour treatment on the seat upholstery and door trim is brand new. Suzuki’s interior designers have replaced the centre sections on the front and rear seats with deep blue high-grade cloth and mirrored that on the door panels. Also new is brushed aluminium detailing across the dashboard, including on the air conditioning vents, the steering wheel and instrument cluster. Luxury features Like before, the Baleno is a specification leader in this market segment. The GLmodel, which is only available with a five-speed manual gearbox, has air conditioning, power steering, electric windows front and rear, a radio with Bluetooth, MP3 playback, USB socket and CD player and steering-mounted audio controls. Added to this, Suzuki also offers remote keyless access, front and rear 12V accessory sockets, a height-adjustable driver seat and a luggage area light.

In this model, Suzuki protects the occupants with ISOFIX mounting points for child seats, two airbags in front and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and emergency brake assistance (BAS).In the GLX owners will receive additional features such as cruise control, fully automatic climate control, keyless entry with a push button start, leather trim on the steering wheel, rear park distance control with camera and a front armrest. The jewel in the GLX crown is perhaps the new infotainment system. This system integrates the image from the reverse camera, voice commands, all infotainment features and smartphone integration through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay into one beautiful 7” full colour touch screen. The GLX specification also means that the safety features have been bumped up to include front side and side curtain airbags for a total of six airbags. There are also rear disc brakes at this specification level. Under the skin – TECT and K14B The Baleno first debuted Suzuki’s new Total Effective

Control Technology (TECT) and it remains the platform on which this model is built. Suzuki’s TECT combines new engineering concepts, highstrength steel and integrated energy dispersion channels to offer a platform that is both safe and solid. It also weighs less than a traditional platform and, in this instance, means that the Baleno weighs just 915 kg. Under the bonnet, is Suzuki’s highly popular K14B petrol engine. Fitted with a tumble flow intake manifold, aluminium head and, in this configuration, variable valve timing, the engine delivers 68 kW at 6 000 rpm and 130 Nm at 4 200 rpm. Both the GL and GLX models are available with a five-speed manual gearbox – with stated fuel consumption of 5.1 litres per 100 km in a combined cycle. GLX buyers can swop the manual for a four-speed automatic gearbox, which is rated to use 5.4 litres per 100 km.All models of the upgraded Baleno will be sold with a four-year / 60 000 km service plan and Suzuki’s promotional warranty of five years / 200 000 km.

BAROKA STARTS THEIR TKO TITLE DEFENCE AWAY TO SUPERSPORT UNITED

MTN’s “Join the Boks in Japan” initiative comes to life FOLLOWING the successful launch of MTN’s ‘WeGotU, Bokke’ campaign and its ambitious “Join the Boks in Japan” competition in June this year, the plane with MTN’s customers and employees is set to depart for Japan from the OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday 16 October 2019.

2018/19 Season’s Telkom Knockout champions Baroka FC will start their title defence away to SuperSport United. The Ga-Mphahlele based side and their fellow Limpopo fellows, Black Leopards and Polokwane City were hardly done by the draw after they were all drawn away. THE 2019/20 Telkom Knockout (TKO) competition was launched in Johannesburg today (October 9) amidst fanfare and promise for more action, more drama and (Z’khipha) More Goals! The draw for the 2019 edition was also conducted in an event attended by all the 16 clubs participating in this tournament. Once again, the supporters will be central to this year’s tournament. Telkom, which has been an official sponsor of the tournament for 13 concecutive years, will be giving away daily cash prizes to the value of R1 million. PSL acting Chief Executive Mato Madlala

said she expects the 2019 edition of the Telkom Knockout to produce more magic and to once again be the point of discussion amongst football fans from October to December. The final of the Telkom Knockout will be played on 14 December 2019 at a venue that is yet to be announced. Gugu Mthembu, Telkom Executive for Brand and Product Segments said: “All hands are on deck and we are ready to see drama unfold on the soccer field. There is a lot on the cards for Telkom customers and we promise an amazing tournament this season.” The full fixtures is as follows: Baroka v SuperSport United, Highlands Park v Black Leopards, Cape Town City v Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns v AmaZulu, Orlando Pirates v Stellenbosch FC, Golden Arrows v Polokwane City and Chippa United v Bloemfontein Celtic.

With over 150 of the country’s rugby fans, MTN’s customers and employees expected to join the Springboks in Japan as winners of the ‘Join the Boks in Japan’ competition, the team will be competing with the knowledge that South Africans are supporting them, pushing them to work harder. MTN is thrilled to see this great campaign coming to fruition. “When we announced this competition in June this year our aim was to ensure that there is a strong presence of South African’s who are also rugby fans cheering the Springboks on in Japan”, says Mapula Bodibe, Consumer Business Unit Executive at MTN SA. “This is also in line with the company’s ‘#WeGotU’ promise to our customers that we understand that the Springboks are important to them and

likewise to the Springboks that we are behind them everywhere they go”. Bodibe reiterated the fact that sport is a powerful instrument that can foster national unity and drive positive change, alluding to the 1995 feat which demonstrated the power of the sport to unite the nation. The culmination of this com-

petition coincides with MTN’s 25th birthday celebration which is all about enabling our customers to get that feeling that just excites them during this celebratory period. “This trip has truly brought our tagline of “Get that Winning Feeling” to life and we believe that it will rub off onto the Springboks who are also aiming to achieve that winning feeling in the land of the rising sun”, Bodibe concludes.
