LEPELLE-NKUMPI MAYOR FIRED OVER VBS SCANDAL

Deputy Provincial Commissioner Responsible for Human Resources Management, Major General Christine Morakaladi, Kgoshi Kekana 111 and chairman of Polokwane City FC, Johnny Mogaladi who donated the structures for the station.

LEPELLE-Nkumpi Business Forum says the sacking of Mayor Nakedi Sibanda-Kekana over VBS scandal is the best to have happened. Sibanda-Kekana, was fired as the mayor of the troubled Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality together with six other mayors across the province of Limpopo over the much published VBS saga which has since been described as “The Greatest Bank Heist” Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality is said to have invested R152 million into the much talked about VBS. In total, the involved municipalities are said to have invested R1.2 billion in this bank. In an exclusive interview with Lepelle Review, the chairperson of Lepelle-Nkumpi Business Forum, Consolate Baloyi said they applaud Limpopo premier Chippu Mathabatha for doing the right thing by removing those “corrupt” mayors from their positions. In a desperate move to had the Mayor removed from her position, last month Baloyi and a group of concerned residents from Lebowakgomo and the surrounding areas staged a Continue on page 2

IT is that time of the year when families come together to celebrate the festive season. This is the time when most of people spend their hard earned salaries irresponsibly, forgetting that there is life after December. Make yourself a big favour and spend responsibly to avoid January stress. We also encourage you to take

Baloyi’ sentiments were echoed by Lepelle-Nkumpi Development Party’s Phauwe Mphahlele. “We praise premier Mathabatha’s decision to do away

it easy on the roads so that you can arrive alive at your various holiday destinations. For those who will be travelling long distances, make sure you give yourselves time to rest along your way whenever you feel tired on the road because it is better to arrive to your destination late than never.

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate our own Baroka FC for winning the Telkom Knockout title, we are proud of you Bakgaga. Lastly we are glad to announce our winners in the Lepelle Review / Soft n Free competition as follows: Pontsho Precious Thipe, Matiego Maribe, Mogole

with these corrupt mayors, and we also wish that he can remain firm in making sure that those who stole our money can return it or face jail,” said Mphahlele. Few weeks ago the Democratic Alliance accused the municipality to have overspent the money during this year’ State Of the Municipality Address (SOMA). DA then was accusing the municipality to be failing to serve the communities around this

municipality with basic service delivery, yet they overspent more than half a million rand for an event that lasted for less than seven hours in Mafefe outside Lebowakgomo in May this year. The municipality’s chief financial officer and municipal manager did not survive Mathabatha’s wrath as he has recommended that they face disciplinary action. Mathabatha has also recommended that the steps providing for civil

recovery in terms of Section 32 (2) of the MFMA be considered against the municipal managers and the chief financial officer. Other mayors who were fired are Florence Radzilani from Vhembe, Shonisani Sinyoni (Makhado), Joyce Bila (Collins Chabane), Sasavona Mathebula (Giyani), Chorris Phokoane (Fetakgomo-Tubatse) and Bella Kupa (Ephraim Mogale).

Happy Shopping...Mogatladi Nkuna is being helped around by roots butchery Lebowakgomo stuff member.

IT was first time lucky for Kota / Sephatlo seller, Mogotladi Nkuna who hit her luck after winning Roots Butchery Lebowakgomo’s monthly R1000 hamper recently. Mogotladi who hails from Motantanyane village outside Lebowakgomo was excited when Lepelle Review contacted her for an exclusive interview about her lucky winning. “I thought it was just one of those tricky stunt by shop owners to entice their customers when I was told to try my luck in a monthly hamper competition by putting my shopping’s receipts in the competition box. I just did that on several occasions just to satisfy them and for fun as well and was not expecting that things could turn out this way,” explains Mogotladi. The 27 year-old mother of two says just like any other unemployed women around her village, she took an advantage of Roots Butchery’s low prices and establish a spaza shop that only sells kota/sphatlo at Lebowakgomo Zone F’s buzzing Jane Furse Road. “I started the business three months ago, this after I was retrenched from one of the restaurant at Lebowakgomo Shopping Centre. Losing my job was a very bad experience, but

only to realise later that it was a blessing because now I am making a huge profit as my own boss as opposed to the R1 500 which I used to earn,” pointed out Mogotladi who praises Roots Butchery Lebowakgomo for supporting the growth of small businesses like them. Mogotladi forms the majority of street food vendors at Lebowakgomo Zone F’s busiest intersection of the Jane Furse and Zebediela Roads. The majority of these food vendors entirely depend on Roots Butchery Lebowakgomo for their stock, something which store manager Nelson Caneca has described as a healthy relationship. “We no longer regard the relationship we have with these vendors as customer and service provider but a happy family now. We understand what they want to grow their businesses and we appreciate their support as well,” says the soft-spoken Caneca. The monthly winners of the monthly hampers stand a chance of winning three big prize before the end of this year. The competition will see an overall winner walking away with R30 worth hamper with second and thirds prizes winners will be taking home a R20 000 and R15 000 worth hampers respectively.

3 Review Lesedi 7 punches above its weight

14 - 21 DECEMBER 2018

Lesedi Mapheto prefers to look at his foray into the printing industry as a natural progression from his days as a journalist. The former tabloid photoJournalist established Lesedi 7 nine -years ago while still chasing stories as a reporter. “I love journalism and it provided me with the opportunity to see people who had many a success of their lives and that gave me the motivation,” he says. Born in Limpopo, Mapheto says the business bug bit

while he was still in high school when he turned his R5 pocket money into a killing during a school trip. “We arrived at the Kruger National Park and I met a man who was selling water guns at his stall and convinced him to give me the stock to flog to my classmates. I added a mark-up to his price and made a decent profit. The seed to become an entrepreneur was planted in that moment” he says with a smile. He registered Lesedi 7 as a communications and events

management company and juggled the business with his full-time job. He left journalism and joined state-owned Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) as head of Communications and Marketing. “The corporate world was a revelation and it opened my eyes to the processes required to make a success of a business,” he says. During this time, Lesedi 7 has grown to become the Lesedi 7 Group as his network of clients grew and orders increased.

“At the beginning, I would outsource most of the print orders to other businesses but eventually decided to take the plunge and invest in my own printing machines.” He quit from PRASA as the business grew and made it untenable for him to continue serving two masters. “It was not an easy decision to leave full-time employment for the unknown but business has always been about taking a risk and serving the demand of the market.” In 2015, he also bought premises where the world-class printing machines were installed. “The business has expanded to print 100 000 sheets an hour and we have flatbed machines that can create 3D impressions as well as printing machines for magazines, billboards, litho and large printers.” The Lesedi 7 Group employs more than 33 people while Mapheto remains hands-on if he is not running around meeting new clients. He is proud to have blue-chip petroleum giant, BP as one of his biggest clients alongside UJ, Ford, ABSA, OxFarm, NUMSA to mention but a few. As a former journalist, Mapheto is mindful of meeting the deadlines and he says investing in new printing machines has greatly improved turnaround times to meet the strict deadlines from his clients. “The printing industry is cutthroat and the costs of mistakes are prohibitively expensive.” He has recruited experienced machine operators, managers while training others on the

shop floor to ensure that his pricing remains competitive. Mapheto is also a budding property magnate and has built rental stock and is amassing a slew of residential properties in and around Johannesburg as well as land in his home province. He is always the first one to arrive in the morning and the last to leave in the evening but has made the time to contribute to social responsibility and his philanthropy “Coming from a humble background, I know what it means to be less fortunate and the Lesedi 7 Group is involved in corporate social responsibility campaigns to help the poor.” The company has given out bursaries and donate school shoes, uniforms to hundreds of pupils in Gauteng, Limpopo and farflung areas like QwaQwa in the Free State every year. The Lesedi 7 Group also sponsor the Panties and Bra campaign where under-privileged girls aged between six and 18 were given new underwear to boost their confidence. Last year, the Lesedi 7 Group was also the official sponsor of the Mrs World beauty pageant. “The corporate sector has a big role to play in making a difference in the lives of our communities. Business is about profits and growths but it is also about caring for your fellows and empowering others to ensure a better future for our country’ he adds. lepellereview9@gmail.com

LIFE AND TIMES OF SEFAKO MAKGATHO (PART 2)

Young and energetic...Nthabi Mokatse who is the proud owner of Bokamoso Designs, In the opposite picture is one of her designer dress and her handbag.

SHE is young, got brains and has high hopes for the brighter future ahead. This is Nthabi Mokatse who is refusing her family’s poor background to hold her back from achieving her dream to become one of the country’s best fashion designer. At the age of 18, Nthabi who hails from Ga-Maja village, Koppermyn outside Lebowakgomo is already making waves in the fashion world through her own label, Bokamoso Designs. “Although it is not yet a formally registered company, Bokamoso Design means everything for me and it feels like my own first born child. Young as I am, my priority is to grow together with this company and make it big in the country,” said Nthabi who is a Grade 11 student at Thogoa High School at the neighbouring village, Thogoaneng. Nthabi who together with her other five siblings, two brothers and three sisters are being raised by a single parent, her mother Maria Mokatse who is a domestic worker in one of

the suburbs of Polokwane tells Lepelle Review that her passion for design started at a very tender age. “As a child it pains me to wake up every day to witness all the trouble my mother goes through in making sure that we have a decent life. I even wanted to drop out of school in order to push my design business just to help with the family’s needs and that’s the reason I decided to establish Bokamoso in 2013 when I was just 13 years,” said Nthabi who is the last born in the family of six. Since Bokamoso was established, Nthabi whose designs are hand*made has managed to design clothes for some few people in her village. “For now I can’t really say my designs are very much in demand, but there are few people who normally ask me to design some dresses for them whenever they have birthday parties and special occasions. The little money I get at least make the difference in my family and my mother appreciate it,” added

Nthabi who says she draws source of inspiration from her mother who always tells her that nothing comes easy. “It is through this kind of inspirational words from my mother which keeps me going and encouraged that one day my company will grow big as the name, Bokamoso which means the future suggest,” she said. Nthabi says she wish that one day she can have a sewing machine so as to grow her company, however her main priority is to get a laptop so that she can save her designs. “We are staying in a rural area, and whenever we need anything good we have to travel to either Lebowakgomo or Polokwane, and I want to change that in the department of fashion design while creating jobs for others. My dream though could be only achieved if I can get a Good Samaritan to help me get sewing machines in order to grow my business,” concludes Nthabi who dress herself with her own designs.

Two men sentenced to 24 years in jail for dealing in explosives Two men have been sentenced for illegally dealing in explosives in Burgersfort. Trevor Vhonani Mathava (35) and William Kwebityala Majwede (40) were sentenced for dealing in explosives, which were used in blasting ATMs and cash -in transit heist in Limpopo The pair appeared in the Burgersfort regional court on Monday where they were sentenced to 24 years each. They were arrested in 2014

after the Hawks discovered the explosives were being sold with the aim of bombing ATMs and cash-in-transit vehicles. The Hawks’s Matimba Maluleke said: “They were arrested on 27 February 2014 following a sting operation by the Hawks. Several explosives were seized during the operation.” Maluleke added that the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit received information about people who were selling explosives, in the platinum rich

Burgersfort area. He said several explosive components including shock tube assemblies, detonators and explosive gels were seized during the operation. The accused were out on bail of R5000 bail each during their trial. The Hawks management has welcomed the conviction and it is hoped that the sentences will send a strong message to those who are involved in the illegal supply of explosives.

When World War I broke out in 1914, Makgatho was leader of the Transvaal Congress. From his remarks it is clear that he supported the decision to suspend attacks on the British government. He revealed to a gathering organised by the local native commissioner in Marabastad, Pretoria, that Union Prime Minister Louis Botha had told the British government he would not be sending men to war as he expected to deal with a major “native” uprising. In 1917, at the tail end of World War I, Makgatho became SANNC president. In this time, the movement was also experiencing a clash of ideas and political philosphy by its leaders. Some members criticised the SANNC for suspending criticisms of the Union government for the duration of the hostilities. Others, like Albert Nzula, maintained that the SANNC’s loyalty “to empire during World War I was the "first act of betrayal" by the "chiefs and petit bourgeois native good boys, which weakened the liberation struggles of the native people”. In December 1918, following the end of the war, Makgatho called an SANNC meeting in Johannesburg with the city’s mayor, and delivered the opening address. At the conclusion of the meeting a petition was drawn up to be presented to King George of England. Numerous demands were made in the petition, including concern about the fate of British Protectorates considered for incorporation into South Africa, and a

demand that such a decision not be taken without consultation with the inhabitants of these protectorates. Bechuanaland (now Botswana) was one of the British Protectorates earmarked for incorporation into South Africa. As President of the SANNC, Makgatho worked hard to ensure that the movement remained a key factor in the struggle against segregation. It is also rarely acknowledged that during Makgatho’s presidency, the Transvaal SANNNC played a significant role in labour disputes affecting African workers. Between 1918 and 1920 a number of strikes broke out in Johannesburg - including the "Bucket Strike" by municipal workers in sanitation. In 1919, two years into Makgatho’s SANNC presidency, the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) was established. But despite Makgatho's efforts, the ICU and SANNC failed to work in cooperation. Driving this was the elitist class in SANNC ranks, which saw the African working class as being below them. Makgatho persevered and managed to steer the movement away from its traditional support base of chiefs and African petit bourgeoisie by responding to the concerns of the underclasses, albeit for only a short period in the 1920s. This was particularly evident in the Transvaal, while Makgatho was still President of the Province’s SANNC. Check the next edition of Lepelle Review for the continuation of the story.

TOYOTA has revealed a nextgeneration Corolla sedan that transforms the model’s style, driver engagement, comfort and refinement while bolstering its renowned value and reliability. The sleek new four-door version of the world’s best-selling car has made its global debut at Auto Guangzhou in China more than a year ahead of its expected arrival in showrooms. Corolla sedan will share many of the features and technology of the much-anticipated Corolla hatch (due for release early 2019 locally), including an all-new 2.0-litre petrol engine that produces 21-per-cent more power than its predecessor yet delivers better fuel efficiency. Engineers have focused on heightened driving pleasure for the new sedan by delivering a nimble and agile chassis that offers exemplary handling agility and ride comfort along with a distinctive driving personality. A highly rigid TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform improves torsional rigidity by 60 per cent, including increased use of ultrahigh-strength steels and new structural adhesive technology for enhanced body rigidity and occupant safety. The super-rigid structure is complemented by a lower centre of gravity, new multi-link rear suspension and totally revised front suspension to produce a sportier, more engaging drive. Sophisticated and dynamic exterior styling with overall height reduced by 20mm results in a confidence-inspiring stance that is more athletic while maintaining ample interior space for occupants and their cargo. Wider tracks combine with the unchanged 2700mm wheelbase to improve the Corolla sedan’s on-road stance and stability

while the 35mm lower bonnet affords excellent forward visibility. The new sedan matches its hatch sibling with an upscale interior that is both sporty and elegant while delivering characteristic Corolla comfort and durability. Quality touches in the selection of materials and the precise layout of controls and gauges accentuate the premium look and feel. A neat instrument panel lends an open, harmonious feeling thanks to its slimmer upper surface and character lines that interlock with the door trim. The driver’s hip point has been lowered and moved rearward for improved comfort and control while helping to lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity and improve front-rear weight distribution. These changes, along with the reconfigured lower beltline, slimmer instrument panel, slimmer A-pillars and repositioned side mirrors, contribute to greater visibility and an open, airy feeling. Corolla sedan’s 2.0-litre Dynamic Force in-line four-cylinder engine incorporates Toyota’s latest D-4S system with more efficient and complete combustion, lifting maximum power to 125kW and peak torque to approximately

200Nm. The engine features highpressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection with VVT-iE intelligent variable valve-timing on the intake side and VVT-i on the exhaust. VVT-iE uses an electric motor instead of oil pressure to control the variable valve timing. These technologies, together with a longer stroke, higher compression ratio and reduced internal friction, yield maximum thermal efficiency of 40 per cent – among the highest in the world for a passenger-car engine. A new six-speed intelligent manual gearbox offers downshift rev-matching control for smooth gear changes. Buyers will also be able to specify a new Dynamic-Shift CVT with 10 sequential shift steps and a sport mode. An innovative physical launch gear results in powerful yet smooth off-theline acceleration. Advanced safety technologies standard in every Corolla include Toyota’s latest precollision system, active cruise control, lane trace assist, road-sign assist, automatic high beam, seven airbags and a reversing camera.

FIVE CLUBS TO REPRESENT LIMPOPO IN THE NEDBANK CUP

THE province of Limpopo will be well represented in the Nedbank Cup, Writes NAKAMPE LEKWADU. This after two clubs from different division had successfully qualified for the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup which is scheduled for next year. The clubs are National First Division (NFD) side, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) and the ABC Motsepe League side, Boyne Tigers who will be making their debut in this competition. Both TTM and Tigers will add to Limpopo’s three other clubs, Baroka FC, Black Leopards and

Polokwane City which automatically qualified for the last 32 of this competition dubbed Ke Yona Cup by the virtue of their participation in the country’s Premier League. Nedbank Cup is regarded as the country’s FA version as it accommodates clubs from the elite league and the lower divisions. In today is played by 32 clubs in the first phase, 16 from the Absa Premiership, eight from the NFD and eight more from the South African Football Association (SAFA) structural league such as the ABC Motsepe League (2nd Division) and the SAB League (3rd Division). Over the years, the Nedbank Cup has not only exposed a number of clubs which has caused some major upsets to the bigger clubs, but the competition has also exposed a number of profiled players who went on to make it big in the country’s football circles. Among players who came through the ranks of this competition over the years include the likes of Andile Jali, Lerato Shabangu. Jali went on to make his professional debut in the colours of Orlando Pirates who signed him from Pretoria University that overcome big guns such as Chiefs before they could go all way into the final match of the competition were they narrowly lost to Moroka Swallows

in 2009. In 2011 Baroka, still campaigning in the then 2nd Division’s Vodacom League (now ABC Motsepe League) caused some major uproar when they ejected Moroka Swallows (then in the elite league) and Kaizer Chiefs out of the competition. Baroka went on to lose to cross-town neighbours, Black Leopards in the semi-final match. So far seven of the eight clubs from the SAFA amateur structures that will participate in the 2018/19 Nedbank Cup round of 32 have been confirmed. The full list of clubs from the SAFA amateur structures: Tornado FC (ABC Motsepe, Eastern Cape), Super Eagles (ABC Motsepe, Free State), Tshwane University of Technology (SAB League, Gauteng), (ABC Motsepe, KwaZulu Natal) Boyne Tigers (ABC Motsepe, Limpopo), Umvoti FC, Tjakastad Junior Shepard (ABC Motsepe, Mpumalanga), NC Professionals (SAB League, Northern Cape) and The Magic FC (ABC Motsepe, Western Cape). The NFD Clubs are: Cape Umoya, Jomo Cosmos, Maccabi FC Mbombela United, Richards Bay, Tshakhuma FC, TS Galaxy and Witbank Spurs. The draw for the last 32 stage was conducted on December 13 and will be broadcasted Live on SuperSport from 7.30pm
