BE IN THE LOOK OUT FOR THE FAKE LIMPOPO PREMIER..P3

Mogoeng Mogoeng delivered Es’kia Mphahlele Memorial Lecture in Limpopo Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng recently delivered the annual Es’kia Mphahlele Memorial Lecture at Unisa in Polokwane. This was the 9th lecture in honour of Mphahlele’s legacy, one of South Africa’s iconic authors and world-renowned literary experts and educationist who is regarded amongst the university’s notable alumni. Mogoeng in his address said values no longer play a bigger role in transforming education. “As professor Mphahlele greatly observed, the transformation that Africa needs is one that shapes our politics, arts, social welfare and education systems in ways that are consistent with African values. It is all encompassing, every aspect of our lives especially our education must be strongly guided by these values,” said Mogoeng. Mogoeng also says the number of incidents where teachers and parents are attacked by some children is concerning. “There is a manifest breakdown of discipline at all levels of our society, what used to be unthinkable now happens with frightening regularity and has been allowed to be a new normal. Students beat up

teachers, children defy parental authority and even beat their parents,” added Mogoeng. This annual memorial lecture was launched by the University of South Africa back in 2009 to honour an esteemed academic, educationist and alumnus of Unisa who rose against all odds to achieve great success in the literary world, to advance Unisa’s academic and community engagement mandate. Mphahlele was born Born in 1919 December 17, and clawed his way out of ghetto conditions to become known as the “father of African humanism”. He died in 2008, having written two autobiographies, 30 short stories, two verse plays and a number of poems, and received numerous literary awards. He moved his family to Paris in 1961 when he was appointed director of the African Programme of the Congress for Cultural Freedom and he also became a visiting lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mphahlele helped establish Mbari Publications and the Mbari Writers and Artists Club in Ibadan and Enugu in Nigeria and Nairobi, Kenya. In 1962, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda hosted the

first African Writers Conference. Two further conferences in Dakar and Freetown were organised in 1963 to open up debate about the place of African literature in university curriculums and engender support for the inclusion of African literature as a substantive area

of study at universities. In 1966 the Mphahleles moved to Colorado in the US, where Mphalele joined the University of Denver. In 1974 the family moved to Philadelphia, where he lectured at the University of Pennsylvania. Mphahlele first stepped back

on South African soil in 1976 to present a paper at the Black Studies Institute in Johannesburg at its inaugural conference. The Mphahlele family officially returned to South Africa in 1977 and in the same year, Mphahlele changed his first name to Es’kia.

GROWING together in the rural Mphahlele area as kids whose parents were family friends, little did they knew that one day they would be a great music band. This is the story of cousins and friends who goes by the names of Proud Leshilo, Steen Leshilo, Thatego Mphahlele and Tshegofatso Mphahlele who in 2016 teamed up together at the fast-moving packed streets of Tembisa, a township in the Ekurhuleni region, East of Johannesburg, where dreams come into realities, through the sweat and hard-work of entrepreneurs and hustlers when they formed a four piece-band called the Giant Rats. This is where the dream of a young, vibrant, upcoming

and fresh band with soothing afro-house sound was born. Their name was inspired by their surroundings, being the colossal rats of Tembisa. “We came to realize that these little undesired creatures possessed a never-dying attitude, with the strength that carries them through their daily hustles in the fight for survival. Their presence, however, is one that everyone feels, experiences and definitely takes notice of. Much like this creatures, Giant Rats improvises, pointed out Aslaam Akuxa, their vocalist and songwriter, is an energetic performer. Added Proud-Lesh, a former choir colleague of Aslaam, a vocalist and a songwriter: “We came out of a township which was uninspiring to our dreams yet empathetic to our talents, combined with a vision

of a better tomorrow. Like any aspiring young people, we were inspired by other bands and groups such as Uhuru, Mi-Casa, Black Motion and Beatenberg, in order to pursue our dreams and cherish our talents.” Giant Rats released their Ep titled “Hidden Treasure” in April 2017, with a well-attended gig in their hometown of GaMphahlele. Their Ep included hits like I’m sorry, Don’t leave me, I’ll find you, Give me love, Don’t go there, All you need is love and Uyi Ntombi Yam. These soothing afro-house sounds possess harmonious quality coupled with well nurtured voices of their vocalists. They went on to promote their brand through stage performances across Pretoria, Tembisa, Bronkhorstspruit (all in Gauteng) and across the Limpopo Province. “Our biggest accomplishment by far, was recently when we had our big moment via the Giant Rats Music Festival (GRMF) in Limpopo. The attendance was overwhelming as we had over 2000 fans,” added Sten-lee, a producer and an instrumentalist The band is currently involved in a number of projects which involve studio sessions, promotional tours for their new music and campaigns to get airplay on local and national radio stations. It is perhaps the perfect moment to introduce to you the

electrifying band members. Giant Rats is fast becoming a household name in their contiguous areas, both in Gauteng and Limpopo. They are in need of airplay in order to promote their music, as well as accumulate a fan base that will adequately help them to improve on their music. They have ambitions of performing alongside great artists on big stages and events. They aim to perform in music loving regions such as Ethiopia, where drums are mostly used to create great music. They have visions of a community united by a sound which speaks to their life conditions and a youth inspired to pursue their dreams, against all odds. As their slogan says: “We heal through music, we can sure say that their music speaks to the heart through the heart.” The band is available on social media and platforms where they share their music and band news, upcoming gigs, releases and branded merchandise. TT MEDIA LIKELY TO BE IN TROUBLE FOR CANCELLED IT’S A MERRY-GO-ROUND AS SCRIPT WRITERS WORKSHOP IN LEBOWAKGOMO… ACCUSATIONS AND COURT MORE THAN R180 000 STILL TO BE ACOUNTED FOR THREATS TAKE CENTRE LIMPOPO Arts and Culture boyfriend,” said Setumo. Youth Forum from the local municipality of Lepelle-Nkumpi thought that their troubles they are facing as writers were over, but little did they know that they were being taken for a ride by the scheming TT Media. Our Editorial Editor, NAKAMPE LEKWADU take a closer look at what really transpired. IT all started when these writers answered an invitation from Lerato Mokgarudi of TT Media, the company based in Senwabarwana (formerly Bochum) which was tasked and given R300 000 by the national department of Arts and Culture to facilitate the Arts Media Alive Young Script Writers Festival which was scheduled for Lebowakgomo Arts and Cultural Centre on October 9 and 10. For the record, the event has never seen the light of the day as it was cancelled less than 24 hours before it could happen. Dimakatso Setumo Joseph who blew the whistle about this saga told Lepelle Review this week that he was a very disappointed by TTM Media who seemed to have pocketed the money for this workshop meant for their area which is totaling at R90 216. The money is part of the R300 000 from the department which was given to TT Media to facilitate four workshops as per financial proposal in four local municipalities across the province of Limpopo. The venues were Mankweng (Turfloop), Lebowakgomo, Bochum of

which Setumo said Lerato has reduced them to three so that she can loot the remaining R90 216 for her personal profit. With the event in Lebowakgomo having collapsed, it means TTM remains with R180 432 for the event meant for this area and also the fourth event which Setumo said it has been canned remain a “Ghost” event as it was never mentioned in any of the planned events despite the fact that it has been budgeted for on the R300 000 from the department. “This is disappointing, more so because most of script writers in from across Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality were looking forward to benefit out of this event, but unfortunately it will never happen because someone out there decided to pocket the money for her own selfish benefit,” pointed out Setumo, owner of Sdumo Entertainment According to Setumo, TT Media were referred to him by the president of South African Arts and Culture Youth Forum, Romeo Ramauda as the relevant person to co-ordinate and facilitate the event in the Lepelle-Nkumpi area. “TT Media contacted me and we started the process, however things turned ugly when I saw the sky-rocketing costs for event in Lerato’s possession which was R90 216. Since I was the one organizing everything and my total costs from service providers for the event was only R15 000 and when I asked her what was going on, she started accusing me of talking too much as if I was her

BE IN THE LOOK OUT FOR THE FAKE LIMPOPO PREMIER THE public is hereby warned of a person or persons impersonating Limpopo Premier, Chupu Mathabatha through several calls or messages on social media. Two weeks ago the office of the Premier issued a statement warning people not to pay any money to anyone claiming to be the Premier Mathabatha and soliciting funds or monies for a daughters friend who needs to go to university urgently. The unfortunate part is that

the impersonator has been extremely good in imitating Mathabatha's voice to an extent of convincing some of his close comrades that it was him. One or two top ANC leaders fell for the trick and deposited instant cash for this person. It's now rumored the impersonators have gone further to impersonate conversations with voices purported to be those of the Premier and other people. “We wish to reject these voices outright with the contempt they deserve. We have also reported

Setumo added that: “Lerato became even more vocal and told him that it is not my business that I have used the money which was meant for the event for her personal gain. She also told me that for my own information, she has erected a tomb-stone for her grandmother while the other money went to her house’s extension project back home in Senwabarwana,” he said. Setumo has since threatened to report the matter to the department of Arts and Culture both at provincial and national level. When Lepelle Review contacted Lerato for comment, she quickly handed her phone to someone upon hearing that we were from media. The person, a man, introduced himself as Jose Mathatho who claim to be the manager for TT Media. Jose admitted to have cancelled the event because Setumo was threatening Lelato. “Setumo wanted to dictate how we must run our workshop and there was no way we were going to give him a platform to be our facilitator as he is not an accredited facilitator and we did not even recognize him as we had no contract with him,” said Jose. Ironically, despite having told Lepelle Review that TTM Media did not recognize Setumo as their facilitator in the Lepelle-Nkumpi, Jose told us that they had given him R1 800 which was meant for marketing the event.

these to law enforcement agencies who will investigate their origin and make necessary restrains within the laws of the country.” read the statement from the office of the Premier. One of the number that is popularly used for these nefarious acts is 0791704331. The numbers are often interchanged and this may not be the only contact number. Should anyone be called by this person, please contact the nearest law enforcement agencies.

STAGE ON THE VBS SAGA

Fingered...ANC's Danny Msiza. THE VBS Mutual Bank saga is getting nasty with the country’s governing political party, African National Congress (ANC)’s Integrity Commission expected to wield a merciless axe in dealing with their members implicated in the looting of this bank in Limpopo. ANC members including senior Limpopo officials are implicated in the looting of the collapsed bank. Topping the list is the province’s ANC treasurer, Danny Msiza who is said to be the king pin. In its statement last week, the ANC said its national officials were to meet with Limpopo officials to discuss the province’s response to the serious allegations raised in the report. “The Integrity Commission will meet next week to consider the report and the cases of leaders and members implicated and/or accused of wrongdoing in the report,” the ANC said in a statement. Bank customers at VBS Mutual bank remain the worst effected as many have lost their life savings after almost R2-billion was looted from the now collapsed bank. In a twist of event however, Msiza has challenged Advocate Terry Motau' VBS Bank report, demanding a retraction of allegations that he took part in the R2 billion looting. Msiza has set a deadline of Monday (October 15) afternoon for the retraction and is also demanding an apology. He was reported on www.ewn. co.za saying it was unreasonable of Motau to release a report without giving those implicated an opportunity to refute the claims. Also challenging the report is Economic Freedom Fighters Deputy President Floyd Shivambu’s brother Brian who is also taking the report on legal review at the High Court. Brian's lawyer Victor Nkwashu was also quoted on www.ewn. co.za as saying his client was

not given the opportunity to explain his relationship with VBS Mutual Bank before the release of the bank ‘heist’ report. Brian is implicated in the report released by the South African Reserve Bank on Wednesday, containing details of how R2 billion was looted from the embattled bank by 50 individuals and organisations. Now, the Hawks and NPA are working together to investigate VBS bank fraud. According to the Hawks spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi, at least six dockets linked to the VBS Bank saga are under investigation. Last month the DA leader Mmusi Maimane in his visit to Limpopo, alleged that the money invested in the troubled VBS mutual bank by various Limpopo municipalities was used to sponsor certain political parties. VBS came under the spotlight last year when it granted former president Jacob Zuma a R7.8 million loan to pay off his Nkandla debt. The Mutual bank has since been placed under curatorship due to financial irregularities. Maimane said the political parties must ‘pay back the money’. “Money was invested and has sponsored political parties. I believe banking licenses must be brought there, the must be more banks but the fact of the matter is you cannot use banks to channel money to political parties. What we want is a strong financial sector. I want a strong VBS but corruption must be investigated and we have called for it. We opened charges against people who looted it and the Reserve Bank governor is with us when we’re calling for a thorough investigation so that those people who benefited from VBS, those political parties must account or pay back the money for the people of this country,” said Maimane.

NYDA WISHES MATRIC CLASS OF 2018 BEST OF LUCK

Cont. from page 1

In 1979, he joined the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) as a senior research fellow. He founded the Council for Black Education and Research and the department of African literature at Wits University — the latter a significant event in the evolution of literature teaching in South Africa. He became the institution’s first black professor. After retiring from Wits, Mphahlele continued visiting other universities teaching mostly African literature and spent two months at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education teaching a module on secondary-school education in South Africa. Mphahlele persevered against all odds to become one of the most renowned authors and

literary critics in the country. During his literary career, which spanned a period of 60 years, he received numerous awards and completed three degrees through Unisa. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 88.-additional information by www.unisa. ac.za Please don’t miss life and time of Sefako Makgatho in the next edition of Lepelle Review on November 7.

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) has wished the Matric Class of 2018 the best of luck during the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination which started on Monday, October 15. As per the Department of Basic Education (DBE), learners sat down for the first practical examinations in Computer Examinations Technology (CAT) on October 15, then the following day (October 16) where they wrote a practical examination for Information Technology. We are confident that learners are well prepared for the 2018 NSC examination as it gets off to a full start on Monday, 22 October 2018. This based on the number of learners that visited our offices across the country to apply for the National Student Finical Aid Scheme (NSFAS). The two-year-old partnership with NSFAS seeks to ensure that academically deserving and qualifying students get the opportunity to further their studies. The Executive Chairperson of

the NYDA, Mr Sifiso Mtsweni says, “Creating best conditions for learners to study is everyone’s business. Thus communities must play a meaningful role during this examination season by ensuring that voicing their demands does not affect the future of our learners”. “This period present learners with a challenging yet exciting few weeks. Learners across all provinces must enter with a right frame

of mind and clear-cut strategy, which will mark a difference between average and an exceptional performance. Opening doors to achieve their dreams”. Nearly 800 000 candidates will fly the country’s flag high during the examination period and take advantage of the opportunity to reap the benefits of the twelve years journey of hard work and sacrifice. We take this opportunity to urge students to take advantage of this period of their lives.

Fish as our most loved plate but also specializes in cocktails, ” pointed out Baloyi with a huge smile on his face. An accountant by profession, it is hard to believe that Baloyi juggles his business interests with an 8am – 5pm office job. He talks highly of one Mr King Madisha, who is his business mentor and role model. “King Madisha is the man I regard him highly as he is the one who has taught me most of what I know about business today. He is a firm believer in giving back to the community, something which he has rubbed off me in a big way,” explained Baloyi He added that: “Having learnt a lot about giving back, we use Central Chesa nyama to empower our people and that include giving our business space for young talent to come and showcase their art, from raw fashion designers to organizing events and giving the upcoming musician platform to perform with some of the big names in the industry...among other include the likes of DJ Christos, Da Vince, Lulu Café among. Most of those people are from our home, Lepelle Nkumpi municipality which covers stretching from Mafefe/Mathabatha, Mphahlele, Lebowakgomo and Zebediela.”

Among annual events hosted by 1 Central Chesanyama in Limpopo include the annual Colour Run in Zebediela which happens on December 25 and a 5km run for awareness against the drug abuse in our communities. “Last year we also added another sporting event, an annual Kings Cup which runs for five days in five different villages in the Zebediela area. The whole idea of King’s Cup is a way of honouring him when he is still alive.” added Baloyi who has since appealed to their customers at 1 Central Chesanyama to be patient as restaurant will soon be back on track.. Apart from all these events, continued Baloyi: “Every year in September, one weekend we also take the whole 1 Chesa Nyama experience to Limpopo to thank everybody that supports us from back home and give those that are based home our experience. Now, we are in a process of opening up a charity organization under 1 Central that will run many charity cases at home. It will focus mostly on drug awareness as well as career guidance for the young people in villages. For now, let everybody go and enjoy their meals and cocktails at 1 Central Chesa Nyama.”

1 Central Chesa Nyama – The business of giving back AFTER the unfortunate government building in which there was loses of three lives in the Central Business District of Johannesburg, many businesses had to close down temporarily for the inspection of their premises, and one such popular 1 Central Chesa Nyama in Newtown situated opposite the buzzing Mary Fitzgerald Square. Ours Gauteng’ sister publication, Kasie Focus Editor NGWAKO MACHETHE tracked down one partner of the business Phara Baloyi at his offices near Carlton Centre. As somebody who likes hosting friends, Baloyi who hails from Limpopo’s popular Orange farming citrus, Zebediela saw a business opportunity and came up with the idea of a central place where people can gather and have great food, drinks and even better conversations. Given Kola bought into this great idea and together they roped in the experience of Steven Mark (born in Jamaica but has been in South Africa for a long time now) to establish what has been one of the most buzzing eating palace. “Even though Mark has since left the business, 1 Central Chesa Nyama has become an important entity at the iconic Newtown precinct as we are known for our unique food, with

The Late aspiring young model laid to rest

THIS past two week has been the heaviest one in the Dinala family and Young Movement Modelling Agency (YMM) after death robbed them off an aspiring and promising model, Bathabile Dinala. Bathabile who has been battling with a Breast Cancer for quite some time finally succumbed to this killer pandemic on September 30. She was full of life and energy coupled with self-confidence,” said Shemy. Added Hlatse: “Bathabile announced her arrival in the modelling industry when she became the 1st Princess during Miss Magoleng in her first entrant which was held on March 30 this year. Unfortunately soon after that, her condition started to deteriorate and she

was taken by her mother to Moletji in Polokwane until she came back in July.” “As we were excited by her return, Bathabile didn’t take long before she became ill again in July and unfortunately this time she never got any better until she succumbed to this sickness,” added the Hlatse with a bleeding hearts. BAFANA BAFANA CONDENMS THE HARPLESS SEYCHELLES WITH A 6-0 DRUBBING

Picture by Abbey Sebetha / BakonePix

BAFANA Bafana thrashed a hopeless Seychelles team 6-0 at the FNB Stadium on Saturday to record their biggest win in a competitive game, gaining a valuable three points in their quest for African Cup of Nations qualification. Stuart Baxter's side had a cagey build-up to the match, with plenty of doubts as to whether they could beat a minnow nation, taking into account their poor record against so-called smaller nations. But South Africa didn't look like a side that has struggled to put away teams at home as they were completely dominant in the opening half hour, scoring three goals inside four minutes to take a comfortable lead in the match. The first goal was rather fortuitous as Seychelles defender Nigel Nigel

headed into the back of his own net to give the home side the lead after a sustained period of relentless pressure. There was nothing fortuitous in Bafana's second goal when captain, Thulani Hlatshwayo rose high in the box and headed past the keeper from a corner kick. The floodgates were seemingly open after those two goals and Strasbourg striker Lebo Mothiba, who was playing his first major match in a Bafana jersey, scored with a lovely strike from just outside the box for a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime. Bafana did not take their foot off the gas and continued to pile on the pressure on Seychelles but what stood in between them and an avalanche of goals was a brilliant performance from their goalkeeper, Romeo Barra, who staved off plenty of one-on-one oppor-

tunities from the Bafana strike force. Bafana did, however, break the deadlock in the second-half through a Percy Tau goal in the 79th minute, a well-deserved goal after threatening for the entire match. China-based striker Dino Ndlovu, who has been in fine form for his club side Hangzhou Greentown, made it 5-0 just minutes after taking the field before Teboho Mokoena rounded off the scoring on the stroke of full time. The win is South Africa's biggest in a competitive game and they next travel to the island nation for the return leg on Tuesday.-www.ewn.co.za

BAROKA’S HEAD COACH IS SKATING ON A THIN LINE

By NAKAMPE LEKWADU IT’s not raining but pouring for Baroka FC who are finding themselves in the football doldrums of the country’s domestic league. The Ga-Mphahlele-based outfit have been blowing hot and cold, and they have gone eight matches without any win, and there is no doubt that the club’s former coach Kgoloke “This football will kill you” Kgoloke is having the last laugh wherever he is. The situation at is bad and it is a naked truth that head coach Wedson Nyirenda is a very worried man as there is no doubt he is skating on the thin line in terms of his job as it could be ended long before he knew as

long as things remain like this. The last time Baroka won a league match was on August 8, an infamous 2-1 over the visiting Cape Town City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium while the other matches ended in five loses and four draws. The club has already lost two Limpopo Derbies against cross-town neighbours, Black Leopards (1-0 away) and Polokwane City who beat them 2-1 on August 18 and 0ctober 2 respectively. Ironically the club this time last season were at their best and they even held the top position on the log for almost two month as opposed to their current position (15th with 7 points), and

thanks to FIFA’s harsh decision to dock six points from AmaZulu who dropped to the bottom of the log with three points. With the Absa Premiership have taken a break due to CAF’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, Baroka have more chance to sort out their blues and come back strongly when they will be facing the troubled Bloemfontein Celtic away on October 28. On the same day another battle between a Limpopo and a Free State side will be taking place at the Thohoyandou Stadium when Black Leopards welcome Free State Stars while Polokwane City will also be at home (Peter Mokaba Stadium) where

Baroka coach Wedson Nyirenda. they will entertain Maritzburg United on October 27. The biggest match however will be at the FNB Stadium on October 27 when Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will be at each other’s throats.

The rest of the remaining October fixtures are: Chippa United v Mamelodi Sundowns (Sisa Dukashe), Cape Town City v AmaZulu (Cape Town Stadium) and SuperSport United v Golden Arrows (Lucas Moripe).
