THE GAUTENG E-TOLLS MERRY-GO ROUND SAGA CONTINUES

THE E-Tolls saga in Gauteng is seems to be way too far from over. This after the newly appointed Financial Minister, Tito “Shasha” Mboweni made an appeal to motorist in Gauteng to pay for their e-toll bills. Speaking in his mid-term budget speech earlier in the week, Mboweni said for the country’s transport infrastructure to work, people need to pay for that "But if we want a road transport infrastructure that works, we need to pay our tolls. Government remains committed to the user pay principle because it is the most efficient and effective way to ensure that the direct benefits of services are paid for by those who use them,” said the former Reserve Bank governor. Mboweni who recently replaced the beleaguered Nhlanhla Nene to the position said as the country, there is a need to restore a culture of payment to ensure the sustainability of the services and to give confidence to those institutions who invest in their bonds. "Given the land transport intensity of our economy, it is vital that our road network supports growth and development. Over the medium term, funds are reprioritised to enable the strengthening and rehabilitation of the national non-toll road network,

SOLLY MSIMANGA of which about 75 per cent is beyond its design life,” said Mboweni. Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Gauteng premier candidat Solly Msimanga has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa and Premier David Makhura to make good on their promise to scrap e-tolls. The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) is in the process of serving summonses on thousands of

people and organisations who have failed to pay their e-tolls in a bid to recoup its debt which stands at millions of rands. At the Gauteng State of the Province Address earlier this year, Makhura admitted that the e-toll system is not working. Standing next to the N12 Highway close to an e-toll gantry in Kempton Park, Msimanga says e-tolls are crippling the economy and must be scrapped. “This needs to come down, this

needs to be stopped and we are calling on the president to make sure that we really bring this to an end.” Msimanga has also accused Sanral of mismanaging funds and called for an investigation into the roads agency’s finances. Msimanga insists there are other ways to pay for road maintenance instead of the current e-tolling system.

EKURHULENI Mayor, Mzwandile Masina has survived a motion of no confidence. The city council debated the Democratic Alliance (DA)-sponsored motion on Thursday morning with the Inkatha Freedom Party abstaining from the vote and the Economic Freedom Fighters saying it doesn’t support the motion.

Masina has described the motion as frivolous and desperate, saying the DA wants him removed as mayor because the Ekurhuleni council passed a motion to expropriate unused private land where owners cannot be traced. The DA brought the motion which it said was part of the public’s call for clean governance and better service delivery in the metro.

Masina was accused of being behind poor service delivery and not taking steps against corruption. The ANC governs the metro through a coalition, with reports that the African Independent Congress may have been willing to break away from its agreement with the ANC.-www. ewn.co.za

WE welcome you on Transport Month, October and hope you are having a good time. It is so unfortunate that already the province of Limpopo lost 26 lives on a single day after a horrific accident involving a truck, a 22 seater mini bus and another car on the N1 road between Mookgopong and Polokwane. We also welcome the first

good rain which has been experience in some parts of the country, however we encourage parents to always be alert in making sure that their kids don’t play anywhere near open dongas and rivers as they might be either washed away or drowned in this rainy period. We also wish pupils and students, more so matriculates who will started their final year

examinations on October 22… it has been a long year for you, so go out there and do the best of you and of what you have learnt throughout the year. In this edition, we look into the difficulties and the harsh realities faced by people living with albinism and the bad treatment they get from most of us. Lastly we would like to appeal to road users who will be

flocking to FNB Stadium in Johannesburg for the country’s domestic mother of all derbies involving Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to take it easy on the roads on their way to there and coming back on October 27. May the best team win on the day. For now enjoy the juice stories, till next time-Editorial Editor… Nakampe Lekwadu

Albinism in our communities By NGWAKO MACHETHE

In the midst of summer and the understandable jovial mood among our people, there is a society among us that we either know very little of or are just ignorant to their struggles, even when they are living with us in our communities. Earlier this year there was a sad story of an 11 year old girl living with albinism, Gabisile Chabane who was kidnapped from her home in Witbank and her lifeless body to be found later. Growing up in a rural parts of Limpopo province, and I believe many others from black communities around the country heard the same stories about the people living with albinism. There are myth and superstitions whenever one speaks of the albinism in the sub Saharan region of Africa. Their persecution is almost entirely based on myth and superstition, especially in the sub Saharan region. Some in southern Africa believe that their body parts possess magical powers. Some think that possessing their limbs can ensure better health, and will bring good luck to the owner. Others claim that they don’t die but disappear… The 2016, a UN report stated that people who live with albinism are treated “more like ghosts than humans”, following years of ostracisation and a general lack of public understanding. Kasi Focus got excited in the month of awareness against the discrimination against the people living with Albinism, Albinism Society of South Africa (ASSA), invited us to Gugu Primary School in Soweto where they will be teaching the young children about Albinism. After a very good lesson to the kids, we sat down for a chat with the chairperson of ASSA, Mama Nomasonto Mazibuko and immediately felt comfortable from her sense of humour approach. “Albinism is hereditary. It doesn’t have to be passed on directly from an albino parent, but the mother or father must

be a carrier of the gene for a child to inherit the condition. When the human body fails to produce enough melanin, it affects the colourisation of the skin and its pigmentation”, she said. Asked why their drive is mostly aimed at young people, she said that is because it is “easy to teach a person when they are still young compared to a fully grown person – you catch them small…they will live better with the people living with our condition”. They get the information straight from the horse’s mouth…we have partnered with Sasol on a book that is designed to educate people about albinism. As an organisation, we also realize that we must educate even the educators about this condition, the health practitioners like midwives and doctors. There is great ignorance. It is a manageable condition…it is for us first as families, neighbours and communities to look after us. Let’s unite against all the scourges of gender based violence, human trafficking… it’s our human right to life. Thabete lashed out at people for calling people with albinism abusive names, such as inkawu (monkey), ikhalandlanzi and isishawa (cursed), saying they caused “the same pain that African people feel when they are called k*****s”. The signs and symptoms of Albinism are: - Eyes sensitivity to the sun, light brown to pale blue in colour, squinting , visual impairment and low vision - Skin is very light and pale in colour with freckling or pigment patches developing on sun-exposed areas and very sensitive to the sun - Hair colour ranges from white, yellow, light brown to reddish - Intelligence, may seem a little slow when still infants because of the visual problems which they later learn to cope with.

DRUGS ABUSE, CARMEN SURVIVE TO TELL HER STORY DRUGS are a huge problem in our villages, townships, schools, towns and suburbs. They destroy families, lives and the dreams. They do not choose age, colour nor status. So to understand more about this drug problem, KASIE FOCUS’ CORRESPONDENT JULEY RAKGOTHO we went to have one on one with Carmen Ackhorst, former drug addict who bounced back at the age of 48. Ackhurst does not look 48 at all, her petite body and halfmoon smile makes you think she is her mid-thirties. She is bit nervous though, however she is looking forward to open up to us. "My upbringing was difficult, I am the youngest at home, and I had to grow up quickly. I took the role of a mother at the age of 9.I look after my mother who was not well then”, said emotional Ackhurst. She had to cook, bathe her mother and give her medicine. At the age of 20 she started working at the printing company. When she was 23 she got attracted to some lady that she was working with. The lady had a toddler then. They got involved but it never lasted long and later they broke up. "My mother and my siblings were fine with me sexual choice". Emphasized Carmen. In 1997 she got married to an alcoholic and emotional abusive man. He later asked for a divorce. Some days he would not come back home. When he was home there was no peace. He will belittle and shout at her. At the age 30 she ended the marriage. "Life happens all the time” sighed Ackhurst. She started taking drugs at the age of 35, trying to understand her brother's lifestyle because he was heavy on drugs. So she started using E to experiment. However she never spent her own money on drugs then. Friends offered to buy her. And she was not prepared to use heavy drugs then. She disclosed to her sister that she is on drugs. Doing drugs bring a temporary wonderful feeling. They take you to cloud nine and helps you to escape all the negativity and the reality of a situations and challenges. At some point she took cat which made her very active and could not sleep for a week. Her sisters’ daughter; niece was on drug too just like Carmen, so they would go out together to have fun on a coke drug. They took drugs together. She knew her niece was escaping from something. In their dealers were Nigerians and they all had one name

John. Whether you a drug dealer in East Rand, West Rand or Midland your name is John. If you do not pay John, he will be on your case. Otherwise you give him your phone and bring the money later to release your phone. Carmen is an empath, so she always feels sorry for people. She reckons that selling drugs is a lucrative business .The drug dealers are forced by poverty and life challenges to run this kind of business. She has also experimented acid. Acid slows you down you cannot even drive. However it did not have any effect on her. E tablet also did not do much to her it makes you sensual. Disco biscuit is combination of acid and cocaine, is a tablet. That worked good on her. It made her feel on top of the world. One night her niece and her boyfriend came to visit her. They brought crushed disco biscuit with. There is a way of sniffing it. That night she took disco biscuit and sniffed another one. She went to bed with electric blanked. A minute in bed she saw the room going in circles. Heat activates drugs and it makes you very high. She lost it then. Her niece put her urgently in cold bath to calm her down. It worked so well she started playing music and dancing. She stopped using drugs and became focused. She gave her all at work and her work was shown on one of magazine shows. Her best friend was her dog Titus.

Fast forward to 2010 she fell crazily in love with "Norah “who introduce her to drugs. Norah had an eleven year old son who was still in school and they did drugs together. Ackhorst moved to Durban with her girlfriend. They met another John drug dealer. They went wild with drugs and alcohol.

The relationship went sour and ended. Carmen moved in with her family in England in August 2017. During her stay managed to stop taking drugs at just six months. She is back now in South Africa and has been clean for a year. This gave her an opportunity to go back to

doing what she loves, printing at another printing company and she looks very happy and grounded. Carmen can now dream big, dance, sing and laugh from the stomach. Her dream is to build a house and be a foster parent to dogs and cats.

MAMA BETTY CHILOANE (79) RECEIVES HER TITLE DEED THE Title Deeds Friday programme continues to bring much relieve to the residents who live in houses they do not have title deeds for. It is more relieving to the elders who are anxious to leave their grandchildren with a secured roof over their heads when they ultimately pass away. Ms Betty Chiloane (79) of Chief Albert Luthuli Extension 5 was one of the recipients of tittle deeds at Marivate Hall in Daveyton during the Siyaqhuba Title Deeds Friday last week. Chiloane was one of 150 residents of Chief Albert Luthuli whose title deeds were ready to be collected. On the day, 35 residents received their title deeds. Those that did not collect will do so at the Daveyton Customer Care Centre at their convenient time. Ms Chiloane was grateful to the City and the Mayor for the initiate to give them secured ownership of their houses by ensuring that they do have title deeds to them. She likened the situation of

Ms Betty Chiloane (79) flanked by MMC for Finance and Economic Development Cllr Doctor Xhakaza and MMC for Corporate and Shared Services Cllr Khosi Mabaso after receiving her title deed. living in a house without having a title deed to being a tenant in her own house. MMC for Finance and Economic Development Cllr Doctor Xhakaza, who officiated over the handing over of the title deeds, urged the recipients to keep them save. "This document gives you a security of tenure. It says you are the owner of the house and the land it is built on. It is the legacy that you may leave for your descen-

dants," he said. He said that since the Executive Mayor, Cllr Mzwandile Masina, introduced the Title Deeds Friday, the City is pushing back the backlog of uncollected title deeds. He said the City has patterned with the provincial and national government to strengthen the administration process of giving houses and title deeds to their right owners.

NOVEMBER 2018 4 A MEGA FOOTPRINT ON SOUTH AFRICA’S RAIL INDUSTRIALISATION increased speed.

GIBELA, the Alstom-led BEE train manufacturing joint venture this week hosted the President of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa for the official opening of its flagship train manufacturing plant in Ekurhuleni, the first of its kind on the continent. This is the site where 580 modern commuter trains will be built – by South Africans for South Africa. The official opening of the factory falls within Transport Month. Themed 'Transforming and Modernising Public Transport in Gauteng', Transport Month seeks to create awareness about transport as an

enabler for economic growth. Gibela’s 53 000m2 green field plant, spread over a 78ha site, was built at a cost of R1 billion within the scheduled 22-month construction period. Its manufacturing workshops, covering 33 000m2 square metres, are designed in a modular format to facilitate a lean manufacturing process. At peak production, two cars a day, one and a half trains a week and 62 trains a year will be produced. The Gibela manufacturing team is gearing up to achieve maximum manufacturing capacity – never before achieved – by the end of 2020. Gibela CEO Thierry Darthout

explains: “The plant provides South Africa with its own capacity to manufacture modern trains. This will have a massive, positive impact not only on South Africa’s commuting public, but also on the country’s economy”. The world-class plant features the latest innovations, making for an advanced manufacturing process involving 250 linked industrial activities and the assembly of at least 10 000 parts. Some 19 new process innovations are in place: • A standout example is the drawbench, a machine used to shape 5mm stainless

steel metal. The most modern of its kind currently available in the global rail market, it can pull 22m long side sill profiles – a length unique to the rail manufacturing industry – and fabricate roof corrugations and various stiffeners for the train. As the parts it produces are safety-critical, 100% accuracy – all of the time – is essential. • Seven-axis robots have been installed to work in otherwise hard-to-reach welding places, improving efficiency. • Mechanical and electrical rotating fixtures are in place for improved ergonomics and

• A scissor lift table replaces overhead cranes, eliminating safety risks during installation while increasing efficiency and accuracy. The plant has a bespoke, 4 700m2 training centre, critical for the transfer of new rail-related skills to Gibela’s employees, the employees of first- and second-tier suppliers and eventually the whole of the railway sector. A 1.2km test track for the dynamic testing of the new trains and an office complex finish off this impressive, modern train production hub. From the start of construction, the plant has delivered benefits in terms of providing employment and new skills for people from nearby communities. The total construction spend was with South African companies, 30% of them black womenowned. Of the plant’s official opening, Thierry said: “It was an honour to have President Cyril Ramaphosa officiate. We are immensely proud of what we have achieved, and we commit to delivering trains to PRASA that will both improve the lives of South Africans and provide a valuable platform for South Africa’s industrial rebirth”. The first proudly South African train, built by a South African workforce for South African commuters, will roll off the test track at the new Dunnottar plant by the end of 2018.

Creating Solutions to the medical unplanned crises By NGWAKO MACHETHE SOUTH Africa is the world’s most unequal country in the world and the medical industry is the perfect example of this. The government is in the processes of implementing the National Health Insurance (NHI) to combat the challenges of health issues. The plan has

been criticized by others while certain segment of the society seems to agree. One company that is already here and is giving solutions is Pretoria based MedClear. The CEO Mr Dannie Jordan speaks with passion when talking about the company that

started in 2016 with the aim of penetrating every corner of the country providing “peace of mind to our clients after we realize that an average person is exposed to an immense statistical risk of gaining an injury, weather at home or workplace”. I then became even more curious of how it works, especially when he mentions that they are targeting from the lowest LSM to the highest, as everybody must get good medical care regardless of their economic situation. “The reality of the matter is that medical aids are expensive and the majority of South Africans can’t afford it and this

is where MedClear comes in, so when an emergency happens – a lot of people are left stranded and in some cases results are loss of life”. How we operate is that for a little fee, should anything happen to your family member at home, work, and gym or on holiday in South Africa…one press to our 24 hour emergency number(087 980 HELP) then that person will be picked immediately by the emergency services closest to you. Questions like who is going to pay? But I have no medical aid? Who is going to pay the ambulance services? What are the restrictions comes to mind, MedClear takes care of

all of that… That button will give us your location anywhere in the country and we will be able to take you to the nearest medical facility. You will have peace of mind knowing that when your child gets injured playing his/ her favourite sport anywhere in the country…MedClear will make sure that they get the best medical care. For as little as R9 for children and R29 for adults…MedClear will definitely. We wish that the department of health can give us an opportunity to present to them this model as the country is grasping with health issues, said Mr Dannie Jordan

RIP Jabulani “HHP” Music gives a marginalized language voice Tsambo By NGWAKO MACHETHE

By NGWAKO MACHETHE "It is sad. It is the most heartbreaking thing. Everyone is there ... I just don't know how to paint a picture of everything. For me, it is just sadness those were the words of HHP's close friend and musician Khuli Chana after the announcement of HHP’s untimely death. The shocking news hit the fans and friends alike. Everyone was devastated by HHP's death, said Chana who had visited HHP's home to pay his respects. Well-known publicist and HHP's wife Lerato Sengadi had confirmed his death to us from the scene. It is believed that he committed suicide after having openly disclosed his battles with depression. "Yes, yes, it's true. I am with the family at the moment," said a traumatised Sengadi. Two years ago, he had admitted to attempting suicide three times in 2015 and that he had visited an online suicide website in an attempt to help him get information on how to end his life. Those close to the

star, including AKA, DJ Cleo, Cassper Nyovest and Rouge flooded Twitter with messages of condolences. THE festivities season is once again upon us and Balobedu invaded Tembisa, Moriting Park. Some will say it has been a long time coming considering the number of Balobedu people that have made Tembisa, the township in the east side of Johannesburg their home away from home. And the rise of the Bolobedu music in recent years has seen some exciting talent reaching the national levels with their talent. With their language marginalized, the music has given them the voice and loud they have become. Maadima Group’s event manager Pollet Nakana is no stranger to organizing events, she tells us that they have been organizing the annual Balobedu Get Together (BGT) which happens mostly at the Kgapane stadium for over 10 years now. ”After locating to Tembisa two years back after 13 years staying in Edenvale, I noticed that almost every Venture (local taxis) plays Bolobedu music and its big, but mostly even the drivers don’t know the musician…so why not bring them here so that they can show case their talent to a different environment”. This also comes from the fact that she loves her culture and wants to promote it the only way she knows best, events. It couldn’t have come at a better time for Bolobedu musicians as their recent domination at the awards ceremonies in Limpopo put the genre at number one in the province. At the Limpopo Music Awards (LIMA), King Monada scooped three gongs in the categories of Best collaboration for Chiwana (with Mashabela), Best video for and Song of the year for Taba txaka ke txaka. And he added two more at the inaugural Sepedi Music awards two weeks later, making him the undisputed

Maadima Group Event Manager Pollet Nakana

King of Limpopo music. And Master KG’s Skeleton Move is definitely in the running for the biggest song of 2018, he has also taken the best dance song at the LIMAs to Tzaneen (Tshaaneng). The line-up consisted of the cream of the Bolobedu music artists, from Double Trouble, DJ Rakzen, Lekkersweet and King of Shangaan disco, Benny Mayengani who also won two awards at the LIMAs, the best Xitsonga artist and Best Male artist. And the line-up also got Tembisa’s finest and internationally

renowned DJ Shimza headlining the event. The turnout was over overwhelming, besides the few mishaps like when people without tickets decided they will force themselves in when the crowd favourite, Poshy Gal and Sunco Vision got on stage. The ugly scenes ensued between the law enforce and the crowd but got sorted and the beat went on and on. “It was an experience for both us as the organizers and our fans, we are certain that next year it will be bigger and better”, concluded Pollet.

which is said to have caused the crash. The carnage was caused by a front tyre burst from a truck that was travelling northbound which lost control and hit four other cars, including a 22-seater minibus, a bakkie and Ford Everest SUV which were travelling southwards. 25 people died from the mini-bus that was coming from Senwabarwana (formerly Bochum) to Johannesburg taxi and another one from a Ford Everest SUV while four others sustaining seri-

ous bodily injuries”. “What happened today is nothing short of a disaster. This is indeed a sad day for our province as we have lost 26 people just in one day. We are worried that this accident happened on an area clearly demarcated as a high accident zone. Given the fact that this is a third accident to happen within a short space of time on the N1 road, we think it is now time for SANRAL and the national government to declare a disaster on this road - as we cannot continue to lose lives in this manner,” said Makhurupetje shortly after the accident.

N1 ROAD UNDER SANRAL SCRUTINY

THE South African Road Agency (Sanral) this week started with their investigations on the N1 road between Pretoria and Polokwane to determine if road engineering might not be a contributory factor to the many carnages this road. This after Limpopo transport MEC Makoma Makhurupetje asked minister, Blade Nzimande’s intervention following last week Friday’s horrific accident between Kranskop and Polokwane that claimed 26 lives.

Makhurupetje called for the South African National Road Agency (Sanral) to prioritise the road as it has claimed a number of lives within a space of two months. Last month‚ on the same stretch of road‚ 21 people died in two separate accidents involving buses. “What happened is a disaster and the accident happened in an area clearly demarcated as a high accident zone. Given the fact that this is a third accident to happen within a short space of time on the N1 road‚ we think

it is now time for Sanral and the national government to declare a disaster on this road - as we cannot continue to lose lives in this manner‚” she said. Transport Minister Blade Nzimande on Saturday directed the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) accident construction team‚ working together with their provincial counterparts and the South African Police Service (SAPS)‚ to swiftly conduct a full investigation ‚ including determining the roadworthy status of the truck

ACCOUNTANT-TURN BUSINESSMAN PHARA BALOYI BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER PHARA Baloyi, who hails from Limpopo’s popular orange farm Zebediela saw a business opportunity and came up with an idea of a central place where people can gather, enjoy delicious food and drinks over great conversations. One of our sister publication Kasie Focus editor, Ngwako Machete managed to get hold of one of the owners of 1 Central Place shisanyama was located opposite Mary Fitzgerald square in Newtown. Due to non-compliance of the building that the establishment was occupying, it had to be temporarily closed to either get the premises to comply or move to an alternative venue. More details will soon follow on the reopening. Given Kola, who is now one of the owners bought into Phara’s idea and they both roped in the experience of Stevel Marc (born in Jamaica, currently residing in South Africa) to establish what has been one of the most buzzing eating place. “Even though Marc has since left the business, 1 Central Place has become an important entity at the iconic Newtown precinct as we are known for our unique fish as our delicacy. We also specialize in cocktails”- explained Baloyi. Baloyi is an accountant by profession; it is hard to believe that he juggles his business interests with 8am-5pm office job. He talks highly of Mr. King Madisha, who is his business

mentor and role model. “King Madisha is the man I regard highly as he is the one who taught me most of what I know about business today. He is a firm believer in giving back to the community, something which he has rubbed off me in a big way”- explained Baloyi. He added that: “Having learnt a lot about giving back, we use the 1 Central Place business to empower our people and that include giving our business space for young talent to come and showcase their art, from raw fashion designers to musicians and fine artists. We also give upcoming Djs and artists a platform to perform with big names like Lulo Café, Dj Christos and Vinny DaVinci to name a few. Most of those upcoming Dj’s names are children of our own soil, Lepelle Nkumpi Municipality which stretches accross Mafefe, Mphahlele, Lebowakgomo and Zebediela.

“Among annual events which 1 Central Place takes part in is the ZBEE Colour Run hosted by DMT Events, which we came on board as one of the sponsors of the initiative. The event takes place every year on the 26 December, it is a 5km fun walk/run to raise awareness about current challenges we are dealing with as a community and a country”explained Baloyi. “Last year as 1 Central Place we initiated a sporting event called The Annual King’s Cup whereby we had a soccer tournament running for five days across Zebediela villages. The whole idea of Kings’ Cup is to honour King Madisha for the contribution he had in the development of our community as this has been his lifetime goal to bring back the glory days of Soccer in Zebediela. The main sponsor of the tournament is Mr King himself. This year we will be

adding a netball tournament to the initiative. We also initiated an event called 1 Central Limpopo Edition, where we bring the whole restaurant to Limpopo, Zebediela. The event is hosted every September with a purpose of sharing with people at

home what they are missing out in the city”- Said Baloyi. Baloyi and Madisha are working on a charity initiative establishment that is aiming at helping the community in terms of drug awareness programs, career guidance and so forth.

TOYOTA DONATES HILUX TO ASSIST SANPARKS’ IN ANTI-POACHING ACTIVITIES Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has donated a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.4GD-6 SRX double-cab 4x4 to the South African National Parks (SANParks) in an effort to curb rhino poaching in South Africa. The vehicle was accepted by SANParks CFO Dumisane Dlamini on Friday 19 October 2018 at the organisation’s head office in Pretoria. The vehicle will assist SANParks with the transportation of the Meerkat, a wide-area surveillance system, than can comb the bush for potential poachers. The system comprises a suite of radar and electrooptic sensors that are capable

of detecting human movement, which is an important feature when it comes to anti-poaching measures in the Kruger National Park. Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Dlamini said the vehicle donated by TSAM will enable SANParks to provide real-time intelligence information to field reaction forces: “Toyota’s involvement through this donation signifies a constructive approach in the fight against wildlife crime and is much appreciated. “We also appreciate the increased cooperation from ordinary members of the public and from corporate South Af-

rica, and this vehicle is another important tool to be used to support existing anti-poaching efforts,” says Dlamini. It is not the first time that Toyota has donated a vehicle to SANParks. In December, Toyota donated four Toyota Avanza models that the Kruger National Park is currently using for law enforcement and promoting staff visibility in the park. Toyota provides financial support to a number of environmental NGOs including the World Wildlife Fund SA, Bird Life SA and Conservation SA – the latter is mandated to assist communal farmers in the Eastern Cape to practise sustain-

able farming, something which is very dear to Toyota. It’s also worth mentioning that Toyota donated two Hilux double cabs last year to two of the aforementioned NGOs - one to Birdlife South Africa and the other to Conservation SA. Senior Vice President of TSAM Calvyn Hamman says: “Toyota South Africa is committed to contributing towards social upliftment and environmental initiatives. Protecting our wildlife heritage is close to our heart and the plight of rhino, as well as other endangered species, is a matter that requires our attention – hence our commitment to supporting SANParks.”

Nissan’s all-new Micra is ready to revitalise the hatchback segment

THE fifth generation of Nissan’s iconic Micra represents a significant progression in design and will revitalise the small car segment in South Africa. Nissan put customers at the heart of the development of the all-new Micra with extensive focus groups and clinics to create a no-compromise package that answers the needs of small car buyers. Nissan’s contender in the Lower B hatchback segment, the Micra Active, will continue to be sold alongside the allnew Micra, which will make its mark in the Upper B hatchback segment. In South Africa, the Upper B hatchback segment represents approximately 15% of the passenger vehicle market, making it one of the most popular segments in the country. Expressive design The new Nissan Micra has dynamic hatchback proportions, and with an overall length of 3,999 mm, it’s placed right at the core of the B-hatchback segment. Featuring a sculpted body with strong and sharp character lines visible from every angle, the car delivers an athletic feeling that’s hard to ignore. From the front, the shortened bonnet design and reduced A-pillar angle create a poised silhouette. The narrow headlamps stretch through the front wings and include signature LED daytime running lights on every trim level. Halogen headlamps are standard on

all grades. The lights frame Nissan’s familiar “V-motion” grille, reinterpreted to complete the new Micra’s bold front-end design. Below the car’s sloping roof line is the expressive character which runs the entire length of the new Micra’s body, dipping dramatically as it passes over the front door and sweeping upwards towards the rear. The black B and C-pillars create a floating roof effect, while the C-pillar is home to the discrete door handles which provide access for rear passengers. At the rear are the striking new boomerang-shaped light clusters. Below them is the sculpted bumper which features a carbon-look finish as standard and hides the car’s exhaust pipe. Above is the sports-style rear roof spoiler, also standard to enhance aerodynamic performance. Together, these features create a recognisable motif for the back of the car. The cabin is based around a T-shaped “gliding wing” dashboard, with simple structures that create excellent space for the driver and front passenger. The instruments and controls have been grouped together for comfort, convenience and safety. Outstanding ergonomics was another development target on the new Micra – a target which was achieved. The

car sets new standards in the B-hatchback segment thanks to its smart packaging. A rake/ reach-adjustable steering wheel is standard, while the lowered seating position for driver and front passenger mean there’s exceptional headroom for taller occupants. Coupled with fore/aft driver’s seat adjustment, it means a driver who is 2.03 metres tall can fit comfortably behind the steering wheel. Customers’ desires to express their own personalities and design tastes through the new Micra will be another part of its appeal. The car will be available with a wide range of personalisation options, modifying the exterior and interior with premium components in a variety of stylish and contemporary colours. Connectivity The new Nissan Micra is equipped with a wide range of technologies designed to enhance the car’s comfort, convenience and safety performance. Many of them are standard across the range, while others are available from specific grades. There are three specification levels available – the Visia, the Acenta and the Acenta Plus. The Visia comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, daytime

running lights, front power windows, a manual aircon, a Bluetooth and MP3 compatible audio system, cruise control, automatic headlights, six airbags and much more. The Acenta adds 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights among other features while the Acenta Plus has 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and an Energy Orange interior. The 7-inch touch-screen colour display on the Acenta and Acenta Plus allows the driver to access features such as music, messages and maps through Apple CarPlay in addition to the MP3, USB and Bluetooth in the Visia model. Every new Micra comes with six airbags as standard, plus seat belt warnings and seat belt height adjustment for the

front and rear. Isofix child seats are standard in the new Micra, including in the front passenger seat. Electronic safety systems include Vehicle Dynamic Control, Anti-locking Braking System, Electronic Brake force Distribution and Hill Start Assist. Pricing As with all other Nissan vehicles, the Nissan Micra is covered by Nissan Assured and comes with a 6-year/150,000km warranty; a 3-year/90,000km service plan; and 24/7 roadside assistance. KAIZER Chiefs will be looking forward for their first league victory against traditional arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in four years. The last time the mighty Amakhosi beat the Sea Robbers was in December 2014, and it remain to be seen as to whether coach Giovnni Solinas and his troops will earn their first victory against the 2nd placed Pirates. “I am not reading too much into the matches which happened long time ago because this is a different ball game all together. Football changes every time and so is the approach,” said Solanis ahead of this sold-out Soweto Derby scheduled for October 27 at the iconic FNB Stadium. Kick-Off is at 3.30pm. Chiefs (3rd on the log) are looks disjointed ahead of this match as they are likely

to play minus three key players in Khama Billiat, Leonard Castro and Lebogang Manyama, owing this to injuries “We are awaiting for the medical report to know if they will make it in the starting line-up, but we have other players to do the job on the day,” said Solanis in a self-consolation Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune who last weekend watched the match from the bench as his close-rival for the club’s number one spot, Virgil Vries helped the team beat Black Leopards 4-2 (via penalties) in the last 16 Telkom Knock-out match said they will miss the three players should they not make it for this match. “The presence of Billiat, Castro and Manyama in a temperamental match like this is very important, but that should not be an excuse as we have other players who are hungry to do

the job,” said Khune Pirates’ coach on the other hand, Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic said they have a lot of respect for Chiefs but that will not be extended to the field of play. “We are second on the log and they (Chiefs) are third, so we have to win this match at all cost so that we can narrow the gap between us. I am also not buying the story of statistics about what happened in the previous matches because we are approaching each and every match differently,” pointed out the Serbian coach. Captain Happy “Ma-Gents” Jele said Micho has brought back self-confidence among the players and they can’t wait to beat Chiefs so that they can keep on their hopes of lifting the league title.

SAFA Appeals verdict on Kaizer Chiefs FC:

THE South African Football Association (SAFA) Appeal Committee has dismissed the appeal by Kaizer Chiefs FC to have the sanction by the PSL Disciplinary Committee in respect of the Moses Mabhida incident on 2018 April 21 reduced. The Premier Soccer League Disciplinary Committee found Kaizer Chiefs guilty and ordered that they must play three

matches behind closed doors in KZN with the implementation of one (of the three matches) match suspended for a period of 24 months provided Kaizer Chiefs is not found guilty of a similar offence. Kaizer Chiefs has already played one of the two matches behind closed doors in the Moses Mabhida Stadium against Polokwane City on October 6 which they lost.

Having considered submissions by both the Member Club as well as the PSL, the Appeal Committee noted that the unacceptable behaviour by Kaizer Chief’s supporters on the day was indeed extreme and warranted the sanction imposed by the PSL Disciplinary Committee. Kaizer Chiefs FC were ordered to pay the costs of the appeal.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has hosted two domestic Cup finals: both in 2015 – but this is for the first time the Telkom Knockout Final is contested at the venue. PSL acting Chief Executive Officer Mato Madlala said: “In a year when the country celebrates the centenary of Madiba’s life and honours his legacy, it is only fitting that football draws the curtain down at a venue named after the world icon. We have no doubt that

this will be a successful Cup final. In our previous two visits to the stadium, we enjoyed great support from the people of the province and surrounding areas. Good luck to all the member Clubs left in the competition.” Telkom Head of Sponsorships Braam Wessels said: “When we announced the fixtures a couple of weeks ago, fans were already guessing and anticipating on where the venue of the cup final would be. I believe there’s no better place than Nelson Mandela Bay, in the friendly city itself. We’re excited and looking forward to filling up the stadium with our proud soccer fans and enjoying the friendly game with TKO2018 Cup Final. Meanwhile SuperSport United will take on Kaizer Chiefs in the quarter-finals of the Telkom Knockout with defenders, BidVest Wits going to the lion’s den away to KwaZulu-Natal where they will face unpredictable Maritzburg United. Still in KwaZulu-Natal, AmaZulu who beat Cape Town City last night to earn their passage through to these quarter-finals will be at home to Orlando Pirates with Baroka who beat Golden Arrows to book their place in this stage entertaining the silver-ware stranded Mamelodi Sundowns in Polokwane.
