City of Joburg launches quick-reaction unit to combat crime in the CBD

THE City of Johannesburg has launched a quickreaction, anti-crime unit in the city's CBD, with its officers going undercover in hotspots in a bid to clean up the bustling metropolis. As part of this unit, 80 Johannesburg Police Department (JMPD) officers will be on standby for crimes reported on a daily basis in the inner city. Mayor Herman Mashaba and Public Safety Acting

Head of Department David Tembe welcomed the new integrated Intelligent Operation Centre (IOC) Reaction Unit. The unit will be monitoring the city’s CCTV cameras on a 24hour basis. The cameras have license plate and face recognition technology capabilities. "The IOC Reaction Unit will bolster this crime-combating technology with a team of dedicated quick-attack metro police officers. These officers

will be undercover in both unmarked and marked patrol vehicles and will be deployed to hotspots identified in areas like Braamfontein, Yeoville, Hillbrow, Doornfontein and other parts of the inner city," said Mashaba. He said the unit is expected to respond within three minutes with guidance from the IOC. Mashaba said it was important for a strong relationship to exist between the City, the police and the National Pros-

ecuting Authority (NPA). "Justice will only prevail if criminals are detained and prosecuted. For too long, the streets of Joburg have been held hostage by muggers, hijackers and other criminals," he said. He said the JMPD was making good progress in increasing the number of CCTV feeds to the IOC and were working directly with several stakeholders in the private sector where privately owned CCTV cam-

eras feeds will be monitored directly at the IOC. "We will in the following months also unveil more innovative hi-tech projects which will assist to improve service delivery and ensure our residents are kept safe. This is planned as we simultaneously grow the IOC Reaction Unit to 160 officers," Mashaba said.

dropped on percentages as opposed to those in 2016 with EFF as the biggest winners. Well as for Naka Media, we are in a celebratory mood as we are celebrating our 10th year in business with our Limpopo publication, Lepelle Review also celebrating its

1st Year Anniversary. We are planning a very big party to celebrate this 10th Year anniversary sometimes in August…just watch the space for full details. We congratulate Stellenbosch FC for their promotion to the Absa Premiership and also Limpopo’s two sides, Baroka and Black Leopards for main-

tain their statuses in the elite league and hard luck to relegated side Free State Stars. We also congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns for defending their league champs. Till next time…

South Africa spends a bigger share of its gross domestic product on education than any other country in Africa. The recently done research revealed that the quality of teaching is poor, leading to low performance. The percentage

of learners reaching a ‘partially achieved’ level of performance varied from 30 per cent to 47 per cent, depending on the grade and subject considered. Those attaining the ‘achieved’ level of performance varied from 12 per cent to 31 per

cent. But two young people met up and came up with the software that would make accessing education easier. Intelia Education PTY LTD is a software developing company that not only designs, develops educational software but also markets tutoring services for learners from grade 1 to 12 as well as e-Learning. It assists them with major subjects such as English, Afrikaans, Life Skills, Accounting, Sciences and Mathematics. The company is owned by two young men, Lesley Moloantoa and Ntikelo Shingange who are both university graduates with bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Diploma in Civil Engineering respectively. “Our core business is to provides a programmes and learning objects for learners to use at households as well as learning institutions”, said Lesley Moloantoa. And our software is 100% according to the national curriculum of Caps, he continued. The obvious follow up question was on the accessibility of the softwafre, taking in consideration the number of people that have access to laptops or computer. “We have made our services accessable to the people by making the program web-based, meaning that any device with internet access will be able to get help from us”, he continued. The costs are tailor made for different clients according to their needs. Costs vary from R2 900 to R11 990 with payment plan as an option.

KATLEGO WANT TO MAKE IT BIG IN THE ARTS WORLD

BY LERATO PHOSISI SHE is young, vibrant and the future looks even brighter for her in the art world. That’s Katleho Khanye, the 20 year old multitalented girl from Evaton West in the Vaal who is an actress, professional dancer,

vocalist and model. “My love for art started way back as early as my days at the lower primary school where I used to entertain my fellow pupils through singing and dancing. Their appreciation

THE SKY HAS NO LIMIT FOR NEO

AFTER her success in the Miss Eagle South Africa (MESA), Neo Thamia Mhlanga is now fixing her eyes on the 5th Annual Face of Emalahleni. The 19 year-old Nelspruit born model who is a Human Resource Management N6 at Nkangala FET Colle IN Middelburg tells Sports Focus that she has learnt a lot from the MESA. The soft-spoken young model was crowned Mpumalanga Royal Princess for the MESA in 2017 and went on to represent the province of Mpumalanga in the competition at national level which was held at the Barnyard Suncoast Casino and Theatre, Durban on December 17 last year. “I had to work my way up as a contestant until the semifinals whereby I had to compete for the Express South Africa title. Unfortunately I did not make it as the Empress South Africa winner, but took Mpumalanga Royal Princess representing both Mbombela and Middelburg,” remises Thamia. With the Annual Face of Emalahleni competition as her next step, Thamia believes that she will use her experience gained from MESA to empower herself to do well in the forthcoming competition. For the record, the Annual Face of Emalahleni 2019 will be held on October 12 at the Ridge. “From the MESA, I have learnt that the sky is not the limit and as a woman, you should never give up but continuously follow your dreams in order to have the ability to inspire other young women and the community as a whole to progress. My participation in the MESA has made me realise that I have the ability to take care of

my community and giving back to the needy people,” pointed out Thamia. She added that: “As people, we do not come from the same background and God does not give everyone the privilege but does give the resources and brains to young people to be able to help the underprivileged people around you.” Thamia says her believe is that those who have a helping hand and blessed beyond abundantly and as a reigning Mpumalanga Royal Princess, she wish to wish to continuously help the adapted homes in her community “People who are interested in donating unwanted clothes or sponsoring

and praises made me want to become a star in this industry and I started admiring the likes of Bonang Mateba as my role model, more so because she was then still young, talented, work ethics and independent,” Katlego told Kasie Focus during an exclusive interview in our office. Like a rough diamond which needed to be nurtured and polished, Katlego did allow the fear for unknown stop her dreams to achieve her dream of making it in the industry, and as a results she pushed herself hard and in no time she was a member of

the biggest show in the country called Mama Africa. “That was my biggest moment as the show was more about what I like most, African dance which is close to my heart as it connect me to my real roots as an African,” she added. Katlego’s other highlight in her world of art include featuring on one of the country’s biggest soapie on e-TV, Scandal as an extra. “It is my dream that one day I can feature more often, and ultimately land a permanent role on one of the country’ soapies,” said the bubbly and talkative Katlego

King Korn Limpopo Music Awards shine spotlight on homegrown stars

WITH MASHIA MPHAHLELE

MASH’ED CORNER Now What? Political organizations ran they’re campaigns, we went through numerous manifestos, engaged with party lists of the people they intend to send to parliament should we choose then and on the 8th of May 2018 made our choice. 57.50% of South Africans chose the African National Congress to lead the country for the next five years. A risky move after the turmoil’s the country has been through under the leadership of the ANC. The current State Capture Commission is evident to this. We can only hope that the dawn of the era won’t bring with it new allegations of State Capture by a different family. The Democratic Alliance has also maintained its position as the main opposition party

MZANSI’S 2019 ELECTIONS…THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN

GENERAL elections which were held in the country on May 8, the sixth since the end of apartheid in 1994 has come and gone. Incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa led the ruling African National Congress, with the party attempting to retain its majority status and secure Ramaphosa a full term in office as president; his predecessor, Jacob Zuma, resigned from office on 14 February 2018 and was already ineligible for a third term in office as the South African Constitution limits a president to serve a maximum of two five-year terms. The National Assembly election

was won by the ruling African National Congress (ANC), but with a reduced majority of 57.50%, down from 62.15% in the 2014 election. This was also the ANC's lowest vote share since the election after the end of apartheid in 1994. The Official Opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) declined from 22.23% to 20.77%, while the anti-capitalist Economic Freedom Fighters significantly grew, going from 6.35% to 10.79%. The Freedom Front Plus also grew from 0.9% to 2.38%, which was its highest vote share since its founding.

Eight of the nine provincial legislatures were won by the ANC. The EFF retained its position as Official Opposition in Limpopo and the North West, while simultaneously beating the Democratic Alliance to second place in Mpumalanga. The DA obtained a second place in five provinces won by the ANC. In KwaZulu-Natal, the Inkatha Freedom Party beat the DA to second place for the first time since 2014 and grew to 3.38% on a national level. In the Western Cape, the only province not won by the ANC, the DA declined from 59.38% to 55.45%-www.wikipedia.org

in South Africa. Then again, we cannot ignore the impact that the Economic Freedom Fighters have made in the past 5 years. Will being third on the list slow down? No!! An increase of numbers in parliament will result in a more powerful force. Now with this in mind, can we really say that the DA is the opposition? When we consider numbers, yes, they are. When we consider impact, unfortunately they are not. I’m not saying this because of the numerous walks outs the EFF has staged in parliament. This is based on the influence their words and actions have in parliament and out in the streets. While anticipating the next five years, we should also be aware of the smaller parties in parliament. It might seem like

they do not have a voice with their 10 or 2 representatives in parliament, but they do. Now we listen. We understand. And we engage. It’s time to take the country to even better heights. Graduates are waiting and ready for employment. Students are waiting and ready for affordable or free higher education. Workers are waiting and ready for fairness and safety in the work environment. They are waiting and ready for an income that reflects their daily efforts. South Africans are waiting and ready for lower tax tariffs resulting in affordable living. We are ready for the new dawn that promises growth and better conditions. But will we get it?

FOCUSING ON MAKAPAN VALLEY THE Makapan Valley in Limpopo is the only cultural heritage site of its kind. It has a history of the Ndebele people and resistance wars dating back 151 years. People in this area will be conscientised of the universal value of the site as they celebrate the history and prepare for the preservation challenges as communities. Visitors to Mokopane Valley, Waterberg should not miss the opportunity to visit Makapan's Caves where extensive cultural and palaeontological deposits have played a crucial role in furthering our understanding of later human evolution and the appearance of modern man. The Cave of Hearths is one of only two Stone Age sites in the world that contain an unbroken sequence of artefacts from the Earlier Stone Age to the Later Stone Age. Mid-17th century makapan's valley started their friendship with human being.

The Cave of Gwasa one of historic caves in Limpopo was a site of repeated refuge from conflicts, is the caves that has being known later In 1854, as Makapan's Cave, named after the great chief Makapan and several thousand members of the Kekana chiefdom by the

CARLING BLACK LABEL IS BACK KAIZER Chiefs and Orlando Pirates fans have a reason to smile as they will watch the Soweto Derby long before even the 2019/20 Absa Premiership could start. This after the confirmation that the off-season one day cup, the Carling Black Label will be returning. Last year the competition did not take place, reasons among being that was to allow the new stablemate in the AB InBev portfolio, Budweiser the King of Beers, to activate their global sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup, over the June and July period. The competition has over the years being staged at the iconic FNB Stadium since its inception in 2013 with Chiefs winning the inaugural 1-0, then Pirates winning it

back to back via 6-5 and 4-3 on penalties in 2014 and 2015 but only to be dethroned by the

Naturena Boys in 2016 with a 2-0 victory before they could brace themselves in 2017 with

a hard fought 1-0 victory.. The 2019 edition will be officially launched publicly at the Park

Station in Johannesburg on May 28, starting from 12 midday.
